THE GUSTO OF A PURCHASE | It all started on a Saturday afternoon in Chicago and a Craigslist post. Not really knowing anything about the history or mechanics of this beautiful vehicle, I trusted my gut instinct and rushed to see the car. After staring at it for a couple of minutes, I put a deposit to hold the vehicle immediately. It was a convertible that was elegantly squared in all the right areas of the car's body. Two weeks later and an inspection visit from my Mopar fanatic co-worker/lunch buddy, I purchased this exact 1964 Dodge Custom 880 convertible, Golden Anniversary edition, from an old Dodge dealership in the Norwood Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL. I went with the Gusto in hopes of commemorating my 30th birthday by entering the hobby of classic car restoration.

So it begins....05/21/2022. Today is the day that I begin my prep for a new career path, exploring the Feminine luxury of vintage cars and everything that goes with it. The sexy upholstery, the smooth silhouette of the quarter panels, the color, the fire of the engine, the robustness of ride, the smoothness of the highway glide, the fashion of the don diva driver, and, of course, the music of the driving experience. Monday’s DUSTY GROVES |The “Cool Gent” HERB KENT | 

On a beautiful Saturday morning during the summer of 2011, I finally got to pick up my new ride! Equipped with a 5.9L 361 V8 and a wonderful push button transmission, I had the slightest idea on how to drive this car lol.  I was clueless! It was my first time driving a push button vehicle and definitely my first time driving a car with drum brakes “all around” with one brake line.  The car salesman laughed at me and then graciously took me around the block to help me learn how to drive this 1964 beauty.  So, I’m off to drive into the Logan Square community of Chicago to show my boyfriend my new ride! So, I am a lover of music and most of my stories begin with understanding the music of my moment/story.  Surprisingly, I didn’t have any music planned for my first drive but I knew that I didn’t need that on a Saturday morning in Chicago.   Instead, I quickly turned my radio to V103 to listen to the classic tunes played by the great Herb Kent “the Cool Gent”.  From Curtis Mayfield to Minne Ripperton with a hint of TAMLA and Chess records and everything in between; Herb Kent was my source for perfect classic car tunes.  The late great Herb was in the business for over 70 years and was known as the world’s longest serving radio DJ.  The Herb Kent show was an event.  It had its own theme song, performed by Earl Washington called “The Cool Gent.” Herb had a style of patter and banter that made him a listener favorite. Herb may also have saved much of the South Side of Chicago from burning to the ground as well: on the night of April 4, 1968, as riots flared following the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Herb took to the airwaves and pleaded for calm.  From that day on, listening to “The Cool Gent” on a early Chicago morning or taking a evening cruise on Lake Shore Drive became a tradition. I could rest assure that every Classic Soul and R&B hit would play at the perfect moment while cruising in my “64 if Herb Kent, the King of Dusties was in charge of my radio.  He is truly missed. @v103chicago

Waunderlust Wednesdays| Who's going?

The Great Race is an antique, vintage, and collector car competitive controlled-speed endurance road rally on public highways. It is not a test of top speed. It is a test of a driver/navigator team's ability to follow precise course instructions and the car's (and team's) ability to endure on a cross-country trip. The course instructions require the competing teams to drive at or below the posted speed limits at all times.

Technical Tuesdays | Fuel System |  My '64 is going to the repair shop to get a new fuel system. I will be replacing the fuel tank, fuel sending unit, lines, fuel pump,  and fuel filter.  My car was  originally stocked with a Stromberg Bendix WW 2 barrel carburetor.  To stay original, I sent my carburetor to Daytona Parts Co. in Florida to get it rebuilt. It came back looking better than new. Their staff is amazing and have an unmatched knowledge base when it comes to vintage Stromberg carbs. I've included before and after pics.  Yes, I could have switched to a 4 barrel carb but I'm trying to keep everything as the factory designed it to work for customers in 1964.
