usually the original post is alright and its the comments that are weird, but not this time. bc i could say the exact same thing ab mcdonalds, that they would be disappointed crying pissing screaming etc when they see s5. i personally think more ronaldmcdonaldasses should be ok with a byler endgame, but if i said this they would all cry piss scream shit

yeah, he did say he's scared of losing her. but as the saying goes that you've prob seen from alot of other stuff, "if you love something you're not afraid to let it go". so idk ab u but mike saying that just confirms that the relationship is toxic and if it continues it might even turn into an emotionally abusive one, IMO (its a pattern- ur anxious the partner will leave, u start being more cautious around them; even turn into a whole another version of urself u think the partner will like more (mikes lenora drip), etc etc. very stressful for u (mike) and also ur partner (el)).

"he's clearly inlove with eleven" idk it wasnt really clear to me when she offensively side-eyed him at the cabin and then he rolled his eyes or wtvr that was, which was literally the last time they interacted. not really madly in love healthy relationship of them tbh. and its EL not goddamn eleven that alone speaks volumes ab how much they care ab her well-being or character arc or wtvr their other excuses are (they say mike leaving her would crush her, but so would if u called her eleven in her face)

"it would go against everything we've seen in the show" i agree with this one. except, byler not being canon would go against everything blablabla 🤓 like, we've seen this happen before with steve and robin, this would just be even more bombastic.

then, the show dunks on homophobes all the time so Macabre canon would go against that too; and yes, it would be homophobic to use a gay character's CONFESSION and FEELINGS THAT ARE ALREADY CAUSING HIM PAIN to uplift the straight couple, making them happy married with 17 kids while the gay character is in even more pain and like dies or smth

1) the duffers wouldnt "suddenly scrap it", ppl have been finding subtext and set design clues since the beginning, since ep1. no its not delusions, its stuff for which there isnt any other actual explanation. it all makes sense, every subtext reference, every set design prop, every decoration on clothes- theres even an official st video on yt where the set design says she put triangles on robins clothes bc shes gay asf. Guess who else has triangles on his shirt (which he wears for majority of the show, might i add)? MIKE -but that just means he likes girls!! just like robin, to shut down any theories the fans made ab him liking guys!!! hes a lesbian😭😭😭

2) im assuming these are hard core fans, since theyre still in the subreddit and all that, and i dont doubt theyve seen the stranger things twitter account say they don't believe in love at first sight. so the writers=write the show. don't believe in love at first sight, it's just cheesy (infatuated) 12yr old shit. so, why would they include smth they think isn't real, unrealistic even? except if they're saying mike and els love isn't real-

it’s really sad that now that all of season 4 is out, and there was little to no pay off with mike and wills dynamic, people are saying things like ‘what did you expect???? it’s the 80’s!!!!! there was an aids epidemic!!!!!! mike could’ve been homophobic to will!!!’

bro mike is wills best friend. robin came out to steve after just barely knowing him and he was so chill about it (and he called jonathan a gay slur in season one👀). i understand that mikes family seemed to have more conservative beliefs (the reagan sign on their front lawn in season 2), but i’ve always been under the impression that mike does not have the same views as his parents, he barely has anything to do with them. (with the exception of his mom sometimes) mike and will have been through so much together, there’s no way mike would hurt will like that if he came out to him. (also the duffers would never make one of their main characters homophobic lol)

if will came out to mike in the show, it could’ve been a really powerful moment in the show, instead of ‘up to interpretation’ subtlety that a lot of writers and directors end up settling for. (like they still won’t use the word lesbian with robin, all they say is ‘you like boobies!!!🤪’. it would just mean a lot to so many people if they actually said the words ‘gay and lesbian’ which are words that existed in the 80’s as well, but they have no problem using slurs lol)

anyways, that aside, i see so many people also saying ‘it’s not queer baiting just because ur fav ship didn’t work out!!!!!!’ and that’s a fair statement to say, but the way that byler was teased was so bizarre to me. because it wasn’t just byler fans over analyzing scenes and getting their hopes up, it was stranger things and netflix social media accounts commenting and liking byler related content, noah schnapp telling people to ‘definitely ship’ byler because they are in the process of ‘building that up’. all of that just for noting to happen. why build that up for absolutely nothing to happen? (also no hate to noah at all lol i know he has nothing to do with what ends up happening in the show it was just weird to lowkey hype it up knowing nothing really comes of it)

maybe i’m being a little bit picky, but i don’t think there’s anything wrong with thinking that when it comes to wanting good representation in a show as successful as stranger things. anyways, don’t let people make u feel bad for thinking something was going to happen lol we were all lowkey tricked that’s all rant over

Omg so I know season four was released a while ago but I recently found my reaction notes to the first six episodes. And they’re really funny so I want to share them with you guys lmao.

My notes on Stranger Things

Before I begin:

Idk if anyone has asked this before but how do you think that they would fit byler into the season with everything going on? I’m really trying not to lose hope for Byler and ur page honestly gives me hope.

do not fear, hope-inducer is here!

based on the trailer alone, there is so much evil-related plot to look at and analyze. it all may seem very overwhelming to you and many others, and the minimal amount of byler we got in this trailer was, i’ll be honest, kind of a let down. but there is no need to worry! here’s why.

i’d like to start off by saying that the duffers have NEVER cut off a key part of the plot or left a story unfinished, despite whether the main audience likes it or not. every detail, no matter how big or small, is carried onto further seasons until it is resolved. most tv shows would not have continued to show characters like joyce, hopper and max grieving into further seasons, for example. of course they wouldn’t abandon this huge fight between two main characters (which was very romantic coded). they write things into the show with a purpose. why would they write all this byler in if they weren’t going to follow through with that story?

another point that some of my fellow theorists made was that there’s no way they’d spoil a giant plot twist like mike actually liking will to the audience this early. not only would that probably cause backlash from the homophobes, but it would make the slowburn and anticipation much less interesting.

keep in mind that generally, there weren’t any scenes centered on romance in particular in this trailer, when it comes to any of the ships or couples. it’s not just byler that wasn’t included— mileven hardly got any scenes, as did lumax and jancy. there is this one exception.

and this is such an obvious love triangle. if they weren’t going to continue on with byler, they wouldn’t have added will in the middle here, focused on the couple in front of him and looking upset. every single glance and song and scene that’s included in this show is intentionally added. if they were going to drop byler, will would be off somewhere else in this scene, but no— he’s in the scene, and clearly bothered. with clips like these, it’s highly obvious the route they’re going to be taking when it comes to romance.

you may be thinking, “what if they just make will a third wheel, and go for the unrequited gay crush trope?” they won’t. i mean, from the looks of it season 4 will start out with will still third wheeling and being sick of it and mike having so much internalized homophobia that he’s still doing this bullshit. but then for the majority of the rest of the series, el is gone and getting her powers back, leaving mike and will alone with unresolved romantic tension (that the stranger things socials have called out! see this post.) to hash out. there is twice the regular amount of showtime to execute these scenes too, so time shouldn’t even be a concern!

as a final note, i’m going to reiterate the fact that there were not any romantic scenes in the trailer. yes, el and mike had scenes where they looked at each other, and steve and nancy had scenes where they talked, but it doesn’t mean in any way that these will be endgame couples. of course people will assume that because mike and el are holding hands that they’re going to be back and happier than ever this season. but as other theorists have pointed out, trailers are meant to mislead us! for right now they’re pleasing the main audience, but they didn’t make a point to add in a ton of romantic scenes regarding the main couples of s4— probably because they’re going to be VERY different this season.

so again, no need to worry! the duffers know exactly what they’re doing here. they always have. <3

i was just thinking, if byler does become canon, do you really think it’ll happen this upcoming season?? i just feel like the whole mileven vs byler thing is too divided, so any resolution wont happen until the last season so as not to alienate either portion of the audience… thoughts?

i don’t like to be a downer on here since i know a lot of my followers really believe there’s a good shot at byler becoming canon but i pretty firmly believe that it’s not going to happen. i’ve read the theories and everything but i truthfully think m*leven is too popular with the general public and they’re not gonna risk their fanbase over it. so in all honesty i don’t think it’ll become canon, period. which i hate to say!! it sucks!! but i really just don’t think the duffers have the balls to do it tbh

here’s what i think is most likely: the writers are aware of byler’s popularity and are going to address it at some point. will’s sexuality has been heavily hinted at since the beginning and that’s definitely not been an accident, so i do genuinely believe there’s going to be payoff on that front at the very least. but i have a feeling the outcome is going to be more along the lines of will having an unrequited crush on mike as opposed to byler becoming canon. i think there’s a good chance of that happening this season, especially since it looks like the two of them will be together for most of s4. at the very least, i think we’ll be getting confirmation of will’s sexuality this season

but i also think you’re right about there being too much going on between both ships for byler to become canon this season, if it’s ever going to happen. IF they were going to do it, i kinda feel like it’d be a last episode of the series thing, which might just end up pissing both sides off? idk if they’d be able to pull it off. more likely and possibly more satisfying would be them ending with neither ship confirmed/both ships being a possibility, similar to the sort of limbo we’re in right now between seasons. i honestly might be happiest with this. as long as they don’t outright kill byler’s chances (i.e. homophobic mike hate criming will/him saying absolutely no fucking way would i ever like a boy etc etc) then fuck it!! the fics we get are gonna be better than anything the duffers give us anyway

but there’s also the very real possibility m*leven will be back together by the end of the season/series. at the end of the day that’s their main ship and much of the general fanbase supports it so there’s a very good chance that’s what they’re planning on ending with. also the horrifying chance that they’re gonna have will make eye contact with an unnamed boy in the last episode and they’re gonna smile at each other and it’s gonna be lauded as the apex of gay rights

anyway this got long i’m sorry!! to answer ur question: no i don’t think byler will be canon this season. i’m more than happy to be wrong though

i really wanna have hope that byler will happen, and i agree with all of the subtext you've pointed out, i just have a really bad feeling that they're not gonna pull through :( i haven't watched the movies on the s4 list, so maybe that's why i feel less certain, but i'm just generally unsure that it will actually happen, despite really wanting it to? how can you be so sure that it will? love ur blog by the way! :D

Aww, thank you so much! Well, I used to have doubts too, so I get what you mean. But remember a few different things:

1. Mike is clearly written as gay, seeing as he is very much comp het in S3 (bisexual boys can imagine themselves in love with females, it isn’t some foreign concept and ‘something old people do’). Many straight guys found Mike’s behaviour with El strange. For a reason: he was trying to be straight and took it too far. He was especially mimicking Lucas. Seeing Mike as gay also recontextualizes a lot of his behaviour in S1 and S2. I just don’t understand why they would make Mike gay and give him so much coding for it if they were planning to have him with a girl. Makes more sense to have him bisexual or straight then. I’m not exagerrating when I say that Mike’s main story arc is about him realizing he is gay and coming to terms with that and accepting his love for Will.

2. When originally writing the S1 script, El was supposed to die. They changed it, my guess, because she helped them with a few plot points (mainly as a beard for Mike). I’m not sure why they’d have wanted her dead initially if Mileven was planned as endgame. That on top of Mike being gay is another strike against Mileven.

3. El is way behind Mike intellectually. Mike is very smart, and El doesn’t even know what a State is. It just doesn’t work and Mike is way older than her intellectually. It is creepy and will just get worse and worse. Not sure why they would do that if Mileven was meant to be endgame.

4. The Duffers parallelled Mileven with ET and Elliott multiple times in S1, and told Finn that Mike saw El as an alien or a puppy. Not at all romantic. Mileven was paralleled to Dustin and Dart in S2. In S3 it was mentioned that Mike saw El as a pet. Mike doesn’t trust El. He couldn’t answer when she told him to trust her, and changed the subject when Max said he doesn’t trust her. Mike was also justifiably upset about El spying on him (which El never felt bad about). Mike lies to El and El stalks/spies on him. Most of S2 Mileven was El stalking and spying on Mike and they used ominous music (so clearly it is not meant to be romantic). Mike had no idea she was watching him, and we saw in S3 how he would have felt if he found out about her doing that. They danced to a song about a stalking ex. Multiple movies hint that El stalks Mike in S4 (which is supported by her in S2 and S3). Those S2 Mileven scenes weren’t meant to be romantic, they are meant to be creepy. Not that I blame El. She is confused and doesn’t understand. She doesn’t know any better. The Duffers hate Mileven. They have dissed it many times (which kaypeace has shown examples of).

5. Mike and El do not share interests or even seem to like each other. El thinks Mike’s interests are dumb and that he talks too much. They don’t trust each other, and trust is essential to love. Period. Neither even sees the other as a person. She has been a tool/weapon to him. And an alien/puppy. It’s a part of his using her as a beard. He doesn’t feel bad about it because he doesn’t see her as a person. He did feel some guilt over her death, but most of him wanting her back in S2 was wanting her to fix him. His attitude problem and issues with Max in S2 were about his growing feelings for Will, NOT about El. Mike was angry at Hopper at the end of S2 because he blamed Hopper for keeping his beard away from him. He thougnt if El was there, he would not have these feelings for Will. Mike blamed Hopper for everything. Why he was so angry with him in S3. And El doesn’t see Mike as a person either. To her, he is a sense of comfort and normalcy, like her teddy bears and Hopper’s shirt. She also projected a soap opera character she liked onto him. El only found Mike attractive when she thought he was a bad boy. She didn’t know if she liked kissing him after months of making out. She referred to him as her first boyfriend, implying she was thinking of dating others in the future. There is a reason why she came to Mike three months after the main events of the season. Comfort. She lost her dad and was moving away from her new home. She was seeking normalcy. Mike is that to her.

6. They made the ending with Mileven ambiguous as far as if they are dating or not. Which idk why they would do that if Mileven was the main ship. Why make it ambiguous? I think it was intentionally done that way. El was acting romantic while Mike was more platonic in nature. I think that is to hint towards them not being on the same page. As I mentioned, numerous movies and show canon hints to El stalking Mike and spying on him. Multiple movies have Mike frustrated and not interested. And we already saw how he felt about El spying on him. I think El believes they are dating and doesn’t get it when Mike and others tell her that they are not. She doesn’t understand.

7. They made numerous Mileven and Byler parallels in S3, of S2 Byler moments redone for Mileven, and things happening between both ships in the same season. Byler always won by a landslide. They completely destroyed Mileven instead of building it up, which makes no sense if it’s endgame. Mileven had poor development from the start, and if they wanted to pull it off, makes more sense to work hard to build them up instead. Also driving away the fandom so it’s not popular anymore... why do that? It makes no sense. Queer baits don’t do that. Seems more like a straight bait to me.

8. In S1, homophobic Troy was: shoved by Mike (who is gay), forced to piss his pants in front of the school who laughed at him, had his arm broken, and was made to look like a fool. This shows what they think about homophobes. They also have posted LGBT+ positivity on Twitter. They are not homophobic and do not support homophobia. They are not going to work to please a bunch of homophobic Milevens.

9. According to multiple movies and show hints, Byler is essential and key to fixing everything. The Never Ending Story was repeatedly in S3 for a reason. It’s a hint. Not just at Will being the chosen one instead of El, but also... ‘and there upon a rainbow is the answer to a never ending story’. It’s outright telling us that Byler is the answer. Not only because rainbows are a gay symbol in itself, but Mike is also connected to rainbows as a part of his coding.

10. Multiple movies hint that Stranger Things is a book written by Mike for Will, sharing his story and their love story. Mike is the character who wants to be a writer, and the episodes are called CHAPTERS. That supports Stranger Things being a book. And the book is always written by the Mike character for the Will character. They let it be known that Mike wants to be a writer. It was mentioned as his career goal in his yearbook page, and he writes most of the D&D campaigns (besides the one that Will wrote).

11. Byler is the biggest and main relationship of the show. It’s the relationship that gets the most development, the one that gets the most romantic scenes, the one that gets the most coding by far. And every single pairing (minus Jopper and Ted/Karen as far as I can tell) parallels Byler while it is healthy and happy. The moment that stops being the case, they start paralleling Mileven. Not a good sign for Mileven. And Mileven only parallels Byler a lot because Mike has been using El as a substitute for Will (something that is mentioned by the Mike character in a number of movies, using the El character of the movie as a substitute to the Will character).
