Chapter 5.1

“You’ve found him, I assume.” A pause as he listened to the response. “Good. Send me the address.”

Twenty minutes later, Archer stared at the text again then looked up at the sign that hung above the entrance. With a sigh, he slid from the car. “Don’t go far. I don’t plan on being here for long.” The driver gave a nod before pulling away from the curb. 

Turning on his heel, he faced the old building with disgust. He detested this part of town, with it’s shady dealings, tasteless people & dirty nightclubs such as the one that he found himself heading toward now. The rancid smell hit him but as much as he hated it, his stomach growled. Humans, the vile creatures, all packed into a small space & sweating all over each other in this shit hole of an establishment.

Most of the street lamps were out on the nearly dark street. The city didn’t bother with repairs in an area like this. Crime ran rampant with police sirens & screeching tires as a constant soundtrack playing in the background. The scent of vomit & piss lingered in the air, making him loathe his surroundings even more as he made his way across the cracked pavement to the door of the nightclub that looked as if it would crumble if the wind blew hard enough in the next storm. 

Archer didn’t pause or take notice of the people presenting their IDs, simply winking at the door man who let him enter without question. He didn’t have time to bother with the usual attempts at fitting in. He was here on a mission & he didn’t intend to be held up or interrupted by this revolting species. 

Groaning at the sight of the people grinding or groping one another in rhythm to the overly loud bumping of stereotypical club music that made not a bit of sense to him, he felt very thankful that he didn’t need to wait for his eyes to adjust to the pulsing lights breaking through the darkness. Not that he needed his sight at the moment. He could sense him from across the room & didn’t hesitate as he made his way to where he sat, one arm draped around a large man’s neck as he perched in his lap with a drink in his other hand. All other sounds faded away as Archer focused in on what seemed so obvious to him was a fake laugh.

Their eyes met & Harry searched Draco’s for an answer.

“Don’t you see?” The blond asked softly. “We aren’t the same kids who had to settle for whatever we could find, a quiet place to hide away from the world. We’ve grown & changed. We have careers now. We’ve built a life, one we aren’t ashamed of. I’m sick of hiding out & accepting less. We can do better. You deserve better.

“Don’t you see?” Draco repeated, watching as understanding flashed in those beautiful green eyes.

Harry nodded, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “A fresh start.”

Chapter 3.3

Vince dropped down heavily into a nearby leather chair, swinging his legs up & resting his feet on the desk. He watched his fiance as he walked over to the cabinet in the far corner.

"Let me make you a drink," Archer offered softly, not waiting for a response as he went to work.

"I don't need a fucking drink. I need out of this stupid fucking arrangement," Vince scoffed. "If you haven't gotten the hint, I don't want to fucking marry you."

"Hint observed," Archer confirmed, his tone flat as he continued on with his task. "My apologies but I'm unable to do much about your..." He paused, trying to find a word. Rejection came to mind but it felt too harsh to his own ego to even verbalize. "Complaints. It was our parents who made the arrangement. I merely approved the man I found the most suitable. Everything else was out of my control."

Archer finished making the drinks, bringing Vince's over & setting it in front of him on the desk before taking a sip from his own glass.

Vince sat up straight, his feet on the ground now as he took his own with a grin. Archer was successful & incredibly fucking attractive. He'd have been blind or stupid not to notice that. He may have hated the situation but he couldn't deny what he saw.

"Approved me, huh? So you had a choice of what, a handful of eligible bachelors, & you chose me? Am I supposed to swoon now?" Vince snorted, taking a sip from the glass.

"Nearly one hundred men," Archer corrected him, showing no emotion as he again sat across from him. His serious eyes observed the man closely. "I was presented nearly one hundred files & I selected you."

Vince quirked a brow. "Because?"

"Because you're what I want in a mate," the blond answered honestly & without hesitation. "You are educated, talented & we hold many of the same values. We are close in age, unlike my previous spouse, so we are on level playing field as far as life experience. Not to mention," he smirked, watching as Vince hung on his every word. "You are breathtakingly beautiful & I would've been a fool to pass on you."

Vince grinned, swishing his glass as he sat back in the brown leather seat. "You would've said that to any of the boys vying for your time."

"Not true," Archer retorted matter-of-factly. "You are by far the most beautiful specimen of a man that I have ever seen."

Vince couldn't help the overwhelming sense of approval & desire that hit him now. He looked confidently over at the man as he sipped his cocktail, their eyes locked. He took some time before replying again.

"For breeding purposes?"

"For my own selfish pleasure," Archer snorted.

A sly & triumphant smile pulled at Vince's full lips as he re-evaluated the power that he had in this situation. "Have you thought about me naked yet?"

Without missing a beat or even breaking eye contact, Archer answered. "Every fucking night since we met."

Chapter 5.5

Though their eyes remained locked, the anger & fight that both had held just moments earlier had dissipated. In Archer’s, there was sincerity. In Vince’s, there was still a bit of uncertainty mixed with a hint of regret. Something inside of him urged him to trust the blond but he was so frightened to wind up looking like yet another naive fool. If what he’d said was true though, it was Vince who felt like the bad guy now. 

“Well now I feel like an asshole. I didn’t mean to…” He couldn’t find the words & if he could, he still didn’t want to say them aloud. “I have needs…”

“And now you have me,” Archer whispered, leaning in & very slowly dragging his tongue across Vince’s bottom lip. The move was confident & yet the contact was so light that it felt like a tiny taste that immediately made the other man crave more. 

Vince’s lips parted slightly, his hands moving up to Archer’s sides to invite him closer. The man quickly accepted his fiance’s silent request, crushing his body against the grimy brick wall with his own as he claimed his mouth. Both hands possessively cupped Vince’s face as their tongues danced together desperately with every bit of fire that had been building in them both from the moment that they first laid eyes on each other. 

A soft moan caught in Vince’s throat & it took every ounce of willpower that Archer possessed not to devour him completely right there in the street. Every sound & every touch was so utterly delicious that he wasn’t sure how he’d be able to contain himself. 

Pulling away without warning, Archer licked his lips & tasted Vince’s blood. The man watched him as he did, his lids heavy & his gray eyes glinting with lust. His fangs had dropped, as had Archer’s own, making his desires even more obvious. 

“Get in the car,” Archer commanded in a whisper, grabbing his hand & leading him down the block to where the black vehicle had been waiting for them. 

Vince followed willingly, needing what was sure to come next more than he needed anything else in the world. His feeding could wait. Hell, maybe he’d even give in & let Archer feed him if he offered again. In this moment, he’d give in to Archer in every way that he wanted as long as he could fully explore the passion that was now undeniable between them.

Chapter 2.2

Archer offered his hand. When Vince hesitantly obliged, giving the man his own, Archer pulled it to his lips & lightly kissed his knuckles. He knew he needed to turn up the charm & he wanted to waste no time in doing it. "None of my research prepared me for how handsome you are in the flesh."

Vince rolled his eyes & pulled his hand away, shoving it into his pocket. Determined to maintain his disinterested facade, he quickly looked away. Yeah.. Thanks.." he mumbled.

As their parents made small talk at the doorway, he finally allowed himself to take in his surroundings. The ceiling was high & in the center was a large crystal chandelier. The tall walls were covered with shelf after shelf of books, many looking to be very old but well cared for. There were also a few rows of additional, though somewhat shorter shelves as well. Scattered throughout were plush, deep burgundy upholstered chairs. He could see why this was the meeting place when he noticed the large table in the middle of it all, lined with what seemed to be more plain & less comfortable looking seats. It reminded him of something from stuffy conference rooms he'd seen in movies about professionals.

He shuddered at the reminder that this was a business transaction & that the handsome man that he was well aware was watching him close by was bound to him by contact rather than a personal connection. The memory of their earlier interaction, almost flirty, now seemed a bit tainted & it made him frown.

Archer must have noticed as he quickly swooped in to reassure him. "If you don't like it, you don't have to worry. Our house isn't quite as old fashioned. It's much more cozy."

"Our house?" Vince asked, hardly above a whisper.

Chapter 3.2

Vince rolled his eyes as he breezed past the man, keeping the distance as best as he could in that small space. "So this is it, this is our home?" He frowned, recalling how Archer had referred to it as that upon their official meeting.

Though he frowned & looked unimpressed, it really was a sight to behold. As promised, it was more updated & certainly a lot cozier than the house of his future in-laws. The foyer in which they stood know was huge, larger than Vince's whole apartment where he currently lived. Everything seemed to shine, so clean & perfect. Either his fiance had good taste or he had hired the best interior designer that money could be. Not that the latter would come as a surprise. From what he had heard, the Hawke family had wealth far beyond what they would be able to use, even in an eternity on earth.

"I'm willing to make any changes necessary to make you comfortable here," Archer said softly as he closed the door & stepped closer to him. "You look quite stunning today," he added with a charming smile.

"Mhm," Vince hummed as he looked around. Though he felt something deep down inside with the words, he outwardly ignored the compliment. "So do I at least get a tour?"

"Of course," Archer nodded, offering his arm to the man.

Vince frowned, not moving towards him.

Archer held back a laugh, simply nodding as he moved away & towards the stairs. "Follow me." He was undeterred by the man's amusement, or better yet, the lack thereof. He was determined to win Vince over, even if it took years to do it.

After a tour of the inside of the house ended, they found themselves in Archer's large office. It wasn't nearly as comfortably & curated as the rest of the house by far. It was much stuffier & more serious than any other room they'd just seen. The most surprising element to Vince was how disorganized the ebony wood desk in the middle appeared. Open ledgers & loose pages were strewn about it haphazardly. For someone so sure of themselves, someone who seemed to have it all together at any given moment, it was certainly unexpected.

"So this is where you work?" He quirked a brow, moving around the room to inspect every book on a shelf & every piece of art on the wall.

"It is," Archer nodded, watching him closely.

"And what is it that you do?" Vince asked before quickly adding. "Besides counting the money handed to you as a birthright?"

Archer chuckled softly before answering. "Real estate."

Vince turned & observed him for a moment without a word, his eyes narrowing as he did. "Are you some sort of slum lord or somerthing?"

"You really don't think very highly of me, do you?" Archer replied casually, not seeming fazed by the question. "Investments, mostly commercial properties. I purchase them then work with developers & architects to turn them into something that is missing in that area, whether it be a daycare, an eatery or an office building."

"It doesn't seem to bother you whether I think highly of you or not," Vince snorted, turning back to a very old painting on the wall.

"It does not," the blond confirmed.

"Shouldn't it?"

"You haven't had a chance to get to know the real me yet."

Chapter 8.5

"Archer, just as every journey takes a different route, every love story is unique," Owen shrugged, attempting to bestow wisdom yet still be encouraging. He could tell that his son was struggling & he desperately wanted to help. Archer & Vince would have to figure this out for themselves though & he knew he could only be here as an ear when his son needed one.

"Well that sounds like a load of bullshit," Archer snorted, standing & walking over to the fireplace. Watching the flames dance gave him a sense of calm. "What if he doesn't want to marry me?"

"Give him time."

He knew that his father was right. He'd been trying to remind himself that with time, Vince would get to know him & he would see that he had a lot more to offer him than just security & a title. Archer still believe, deep within himself, that they could find a love that would last for all of eternity. He so desperately wanted that & something about his fiance gave him hope that it was there.

"Was father resistant at first?" Archer asked. He'd heard the stories a thousand times but it never got old. Their love was what made him believe that it was possible for him to find as well.

"No," Owen laughed, standing & joining the blond by the fire. A dreamy look filled his eyes as he recalled the day that he met his husband. "We were both knocked to the ground when we first laid eyes on one another. Though he had been unsure initially about the idea of arranged marriage, meeting for the first time quickly convinced him. My parents weren't please when we demanded moving the wedding up. It was only after the wedding & honeymoon, when he really saw what living with me was like, that he started to second guess his decision," he chortled, knowing how he'd always been a handful in many ways. "The connection was there immediately. Your father & I were both very sensitive to it. It sounds like you are as well, in your connection with Vincent. Not everyone is like that. Love is beautiful but it isn't always easy. It can be quite scary, especially to those who have never felt that kind of enigmatic power. You have an eternity together. These are still very early days. Don't give up."

"Don't worry," Archer assured him. "I won't."

Chapter 8.4

"Well?" Archer had practically shouted when the men came through the doors. He hadn't meant to raise his voice but the anxiety of it had been suffocating. After two days without word from his husband, the father of his children, a man who he knew would never willingly stay away from them, he couldn't wait another second longer to know what was happening.

"Sir," the head of the team nodded respectfully. "We.. we found him."

"And?" Archer pushed, growing impatient.

"Sir, I'm sorry..." Quickly the man looked away, pained at having to be the one to deliver this news to his boss. "Your husband & his associates, they're... I'm sorry but they were found by hunters."

It felt as if the whole world was crumbling beneath his feet. Every word that was said after that was just a blurry, mumbled mess of sound but no sense. This had to be some sort of nightmare.

"Leave me," he whispered, waving the men away.

"Sir, we..."

"Leave me. Now!"

Chapter 8.3

"Shit," the blond hissed, his eyes narrowing as he replayed the game in his head. He'd been too distracted to play logically so it really was no wonder that he lost.

"Another game?" Owen grinned, reassembling the board with each piece in its proper place.

"No, I think I've had enough losses for the night, father."

The elder vampire lifted his eyes & watched his son for a moment before nodding. It was as if he could sense everything happening inside of him without needing it to be said. "You care about him already, don't you?"

"It shouldn't be this hard, should it?" Archer asked seriously, answering his father's question with one of his own. He sat up straight & waited intently for an answer, as if it would help him solve the puzzle that was his relationship with Vince.

This was not at all how it had been before. Tobias Presley was eager & ready to marry him almost immediately. Sure, he'd been initially drawn to the powerful family & the handsome heir to the coven's proverbial throne but he'd also been open from the start for more to develop. He'd showered Archer with attention & affection, never hiding his feelings or pushing the man away.

He knew that he shouldn't compare the two. The relationship he'd had with his late husband had been far from perfect & had always lacked certain things that he'd longed for. Still it was difficult to know what it was to be wanted & desired only to now feel so rejected.
