notes on the owl house, season 1

was gonna do a sequence of liveblogs but then??? i got really into it??? so i guess the most important tl;dr is that yes lesbians you were right this time

S01E01

*watches first scene, where a single brown mother gives her kid a brochure for Conformity Camp with a cartoonish image of a child being crowded into a box, when her kid has already been established as being comically and cartoonishly imaginative, while a flock of doves fly into the air spelling out the words THIS IS A JOKE PLEASE DO NOT MAKE A DISCOURSE ABOUT THIS*

oh i've seen this Steven Universe episode.

seriously tho i get having one person in the friend group that everyone inexplicably dislikes is a comedy standard or whatever but. it feels out of place for a show that otherwise bellows "it's great to be weird!!!" from the rooftops

Hooty never did nothing to nobody!!! except be all powerful and occasionally asking to be included in shenanigans

on the other hand given King's design they had to work REALLY hard for me to dislike him, but wow! it's definitely paid off, he's the worst

this is the third episode in a row where King's plot is that he has to learn a lesson about not being Disney-brand-selfish and i know this didn't happen but i'm suddenly imagining the world where he eventually takes over as the main character and The Owl House became Disney's answer to Teen Titans Go

can i just say that. naming a powerful-but-overlooked witch--who is the BFF to the main character, who thrives on both a) The Hubris and b) The Resentment--Willow is. well no harm in wearing your influence on your sleeve i guess

S01E17

the recurring potshots at JoRane's intellectual property this season sure are.

this was produced and came out during the years she went public about losing her fucking mind, so like. everyone had to deal with it in the way they felt was appropriate. i'm not really out to judge the exact timbre of one's response so long as said response does not align with her bigotry, and i sympathize with the petty joy of belittling something owned by somone hateful, especially if that something once meant a lot to you...

i guess i'm just not super comfortable with it because a) you're still picking at a wound even if you end up making funny shapes out of the scabs, b) these hot takes are about general magic-school tropes but often are so specifically about her it feels like we're giving her credit for creating them, and c) owning her like this feels like an opiate when the real issue isn't that her fictional society is founded on 11 year olds taking one uquiz, or that the fake sport she made up is hideously unbalanced, it's that she's...the leader of hate group

all of which are misgivings i have about the Disney Corporation as well and i get that people don't watch this show to be REMINDED that we live in a society, so like. whatever i'm gonna stop talking about this

that Amity sure is gay amirite! she went from "mostly bormal about her obvious crush" to "Jodie Foster at the Golden Globes" in the span of one episode

because i do want to take this show seriously, and nothing demonstrates "i'm gonna take responsibility for my own actions now" better than using your literal body to bear some of the harm you inflicted on others. it's a very nice way to bring their relationship full circle, and it resonates with other instances when characters are forced to stop defining themselves by outside standards and embrace what they're already good at.

(and what Lilith is good at is soothing the pain of others via self-harm! which i think is the point the Helen's-Type-Generator starts emitting confetti and oily black smoke)

is this the first instance of magic having a cost or rebound in this world? beyond "whew i did a lot of magic today, i'm tired?" hm

Dana Terrace really went "i'm gonna give the whump enthusiasts everything they want" with this trope huh

Going Forward

yes i liked it yes i know the second season is more heavily serialized yes i will watch that soon

this did make me think about how all seriality in TV these days seem to be about building up to one series-wide showdown as opposed to different seasons having their own mytharcs, but that has less to do with this show specific and more with the death of television as a medium and we ain't got time for that

given how much my exposure to this show beforehand was Lumity (to the point where i wasn't sure there were other characters besides Eda) i'm...kinda surprised at how sparse Amity's presence was in this season. i liked what we did see of her, but i went in expecting a lot more antagonism for a lot longer in that dynamic

but i guess that's tied in with this season not having much in the way of antagonism until the very end, and not-Hordak seems to be the only one actually invested in his whole world order. we don't have any sympathetic true believers, which I assumed would be Lilith and/or Amity? i guess neither Shadow Weaver nor Catra really gave a shit about the Horde's ideology either, but Shadow Weaver remained an unrepentant ball of spite until the end and it didn't really matter that Catra didn't give a shit about the Horde because the Horde was the only thing she knew. in contrast Amity and Lilith's ties to the existing system feel very shallow--in the latter case so much so it kind of boggles my willing suspension of disbelief?

i suppose the next season can change that, i know new characters get introduced so--

oh wait is that what's gonna happen to the bad sad twink

i've only seen his armor but given how many AO3 fics seem to be about him i'm just gonna assume that he's a bad sad twink

I'm getting that feeling of being slowly pulled into a research rabbit hole again...

How do you separate medieval architecture from Roman and Christian influences? With great difficulty, it turns out.

Basically throw pre-Romanised Celtic architecture, pre-Christianised Germanic architecture, and a smattering of Norse Viking era architecture into a blender, and forget everything you know about church or castle architecture...

So far (and this is simplifying things down to a criminal degree here) I've got roughly that Brittonic, Irish and Scottish Celts ere towards round houses and anti right angle constructions, Anglo Saxon's ere towards more rectangular and square dwellings, but can be partial to a circle or two at times, and the Norse like long things with spiky roofs.

Most of these are non-stone constructions too, so archaeological sources are somewhat sparse... Must Farm being a glorious and local exception, but one cannot build an architectural style from one marshland settlement alone.

Oh well, I do love a challenge.

Boscha?? Do I love her?? Do I hate her?? I don't know?!

Yes, she was horrible and petty to not only Willow, but almost everyone. But she was.. less terrible in FTF? At least she showed her vulnerability, how she's lost her true friends, her team. Amity left her, Skara left her, almost everyone has turned against her. And to top it off, the other two (idk their names?) got freaking PUPPETIFIED (new word unlocked).

So obviously she turned to "Mikki" and "Roka" when they offered to help. Remember that credit scene, where Boscha's in the corner, looking lost and downright miserable, watching everyone else. She was at an awful moment, truly alone. Kiki offered to be her friend or helper I guess? And Boscha, not knowing that this wet sock of a person was only using her vulnerability to manipulate her for power, thought that this was the closest thing she could get to a team now.

Fast forward several months, Amity finally shows up. And Boscha seized her chance to win back one of the best teammates she's had. (I think she likes to use the term "teammates" instead of "friends".) She begs her. She's desperate, with the strained "I won't let you leave again!" and the terrified "She didn't leave, did she?!".

She can't take being alone. She's terrified of being abandoned. But what she really needs to realize is that in order to keep friends, she has to become a better person. And I'm really hoping she gets a character development, implied or not.

TL;DR: If Boscha wants to keep friends, she's gotta stop being such a beach.

Princess and the Frog but Goldric storyline because I love Princess and the Frog and I love Goldric so let’s go!

Hunter -> Tiana(I see a lot of similarities between the two.)

Edric -> Prince Naveen(Do I even need to explain why I choose Ed to be him?)

Skara -> Charlotte(I like to think that Hunter and Skara would have a similar type of relationship like Charlotte and Tiana.)

Belos -> Dr. Facilier

Kikimora -> Lawrence

Raine -> Mama Odie

Hunter and Skara would be ten years old when they meet for the first time and they as well as Edric would all be in their early to mid-twenties when they first meet.

Hunter was taken in and adopted by Lilith and Eda at a young age but in order to take care of Hunter as well as Eda’s other adopted child, King, they had to make a lot of sacrifices. One of those sacrifices was that they had to give up on their joint dream of buying a spot of land so that they could open their own potions store to which Hunter had found out about when he was 10 and made a promise to himself that as soon as he’s old enough to work, he’d earn enough money to buy that land so that they could finally open their own potions store as a way to thank them both for taking him in. But while Hunter and King were still young, Eda and Lilith had to take some different jobs, Eda would sell any human stuff that she found while Lilith took a job as a seamstress to which she’d sometimes bring Hunter along with her. One of Lilith’s clients had a daughter named Skara, that Lilith would make dress for very often, who became very close to Hunter as the two became older.

Edric, on the other hand, is the twin prince of an island away from the Boiling Isles that traveled there with his sisters by his mother’s orders because she wanted him to be wedded to the daughter of her rich friend, Skara, as a way to make Edric finally settle down and stop getting into trouble which Edric wasn’t very thrilled about and let his mother know very blatantly so she told him that unless he was in a long term relationship with someone else, he would have no choice but to take the hand of her friend’s daughter in marriage and to make sure that Ed doesn’t just bribe someone into pretending to be in a relationship with him, his mother cuts him off from using their family riches which left Ed with no choice but to force himself into getting married to Skara despite not being interested in women.

After Edric and Hunter get cursed by Belos(a similar curse to Eda and Lilith) and being forced to work together to find a cure for it, Hunter makes it very clear to Ed that he does not like him at all due to Ed letting it slip that he didn’t have any money despite being a prince due to being cut off by his mother which Hunter took out of context that Edric was only marrying Skara for her money and that idea made him think of Ed as just a spoiled rich prince who doesn’t understand hard work but after a while of searching around the Boiling Isles for a cure, Hunter and Ed start to bond and open up to each other where Hunter tells him about how he’s been working hard since he was a teen to help his adopted guardians open their potions store while Edric tells him the real reason on why he was cut off and getting married to Skara after which Hunter apologizes to him for accusing him of just marrying for money which Ed accepts, stating that Hunter’s need to protect and care for the ones he loves is admirable which makes Hunter blush. Afterwards they find a witch named Raine who can help them with their “being cursed” problem but not before asking them if they truly believe that what they want is what they need which really confuses both Edric and Hunter as they both believe that they want as well as need the curse to be lifted.

After Hunter and Ed nod still a little confused by what Raine meant, Raine tells the two that in order to make the curse’s unpleasantness go away, they will need the aid of Skara just before midnight in order to do it. That made Hunter and Edric believe that meant that Skara would have to kiss Ed before midnight to get rid of the curse which Edric wasn’t the only one who was not pleased about the idea since Hunter had a slight bitter feeling in his chest at the thought of Skara kissing Edric even though Skara had been his most trusted friend throughout the years but tried to not think about it as to not ruin their only chance of getting back to their normal lives.

But before they can go back, Hunter secretly gets kidnapped by Belos who tries to manipulate him into betraying Edric stating that Ed being a prince meant that he as well as the rest of his family have never had to struggle or make any kind of sacrifices for anyone like his adopted guardians had to do for him and if he continued to help Ed, then he’d have to give up on his goal of getting Eda and Lilith their store to which Hunter states if that was the case, then it was a sacrifice that he was willing to make for Edric because sometimes you have to make those kind of sacrifices for the once that you love and that he knows that Ed, even if he didn’t feel the same way as Hunter does, would also be willing to make those kinds of sacrifices for the people that he cares about despite being a prince.

After Hunter defends Belos, he finds Edric with Skara as he is explaining to her about them needing to kiss before midnight in order to get rid of the curse to which Hunter overhears Ed telling Skara that once they get married, she has to promise that she’ll help him make Hunter’s goal and dream of getting Eda and Lilith’s store a reality to which Skara agrees to but before they can kiss, Hunter interrupts them to tell Edric that he had fallen in love with him to which Ed tells Hunter that he feels the same way about him. Afterwards Hunter starts trying to apologize to Skara since he knows that getting married to a prince has been something that she always wants since they were kids which Skara stops Hunter, telling him that she’s always seen him sacrificing his wants and happiness for the ones he loved growing up so if being with Edric is something that he wants and makes him happy, then she was completely willing to let go of her dream of marrying a prince for him. But as Edric and Skara go to kiss (with no forced marriage required this time), a nearby clock rings letting them know that it was midnight. Skara, feeling upset with herself that she wasn’t able to help, apologies to the two which Hunter lets her know that she doesn’t need to apologies and that, despite both of them still having the curse, they’ll be alright.

After they both accept the curse as a part of them and gaining a super cool-looking form, Hunter is able to buy the store and with Ed’s help, they run it together with Eda and Lilith. After two years of dating, Edric and Hunter get married with Skara being Hunter’s Maid of Honor(because I said so).

So someone asked me a question about my characterisation of Viney (I swear I exist just to answer this question). Unfortunately, the answer was WAY too freaking long, so to avoid completely clogging up the comments section I'm putting it here instead

(Someone in the comments of Grasping for Safety Chapter 15 asked where the inspiration for Viney being so angry came from when that doesn't seem to be particularly canon. Also, why is she so attached to Hunter when in canon she seemed more distrustful/meh on him? And why does she seem like she disliked Amity even before the fic started?)

Yessss let me ramble about Viney >:3 I have so many thoughts about her it's not even funny-

TL;DR: she isn't normally Like This, there are some particular aspects of this situation that are bringing a lot of anger out for her. I relent that I wasn't able to really establish how my version of Viney NORMALLY acts before Chapter 2 happened, but oh well

(Some parts of the answer are spoilers for the rest of the fic so this is nonexhaustive)

As for Viney headcanons--(obligatory disclaimer that all of this is just kind of taking some stuff from canon and fully running with it in my own direction)--I think she doesn't trust people generally (based on how hostile she was to Luz at first in The First Day) but once she decides she likes someone she goes All In and would trust them with her life (based on how quickly she decided to adopt Luz into their friend group and tell her all their secrets). We know she dislikes the rules about tracks and magic use, and when she gets in trouble for disobeying them she just turns around and does it in secret, so I think she has a lot of anger and distrust about the education and Coven systems, and just authority figures generally. But also, whenever she's faced directly with an authority's displeasure (including the Labyrinth Runners scene where Hunter looks to her and Skara for back up!) we see her back down in favour of staying quiet and just taking whatever is thrown at her/her friends. That combined with how surprisingly quickly she warmed up to Luz after Luz defended her from the detention teacher's scolding in First Day makes me think she's got a lot of issues with authority but doesn't really feel like she can do anything about it. But she wants to, and she hates her and her friends being treated unfairly, so anyone who steps in on their behalf is immediately her bestie. Also, given how she refuses to stop mixing magic in the detention track and worships Lord Calamity (the Ultimate Troublemaker™), BUT won't talk back to any teachers or Bump, I think she wishes she could stand up to those systems/the people enforcing them but feels like she can't. So, anyone who does tell them off immediately earns her respect (and on the flip side, anyone who kisses up to them is her enemy).

Relatedly, I headcanon she decided to join Willow's Flyer Derby team because Willow mentioned the abomination teacher had it out for her and Viney was immediately like "yes, I will help you stick it to an unfair teacher!" especially since getting her club approved is more of an indirect way to go against them than telling them off to their face. Like, I think she was interested in the team already but that sealed the deal. And then, Viney sees the Flyer Derby team as all on the same side, working against this power-tripping teacher, so all her teammates got adopted as her friends in her mind.

Basically, she's kind of got this very black-and-white, us-versus-them way of thinking, which is great if you're on "her side" because she will do anything for you (except stand up to an authority figure haha) but if she decides you're on the "other side" then she just kind of hates you, even if you didn't actually do anything wrong. (And I think her first impression of Amity was more in-passing back when Amity was the Queen Bee of the school, top student, teacher's pet, etc.; so yeah, Viney definitely disliked her before this fic started, and isn't aware/doesn't care that Amity's had any character development since then. And when Amity didn't actively stand up for Hunter in the healing homeroom, Viney just decided she was unequivocally on Bump's side and had it out for Hunter, because she sees the worst in people she dislikes.)

Also related to the us-versus-them thing, I think it's really interesting how she turns on Luz and Jerbo so fast; she seems pretty loyal to her friends but then immediately goes off on them based on so little. In First Day she literally spills all the trio's secrets to Luz, then hears an out-of-context remark from Gus and immediately goes "you think you're too good for us??? GET OUT" Viney doesn't even give her a chance to explain, just kicks her out. And in Any Sport, Jerbo is literally just on the teacher's team, with seemingly no context to the match and just trying to have fun, and she is immediately pissed with him, actively targetting him in the game and being passive aggressive afterward. And he didn't seem surprised, he's preemptively just like "Oh no..." so I think her getting mad over stuff like that is just a normal thing for her. (And it never really came up but she's still a little bit upset over that in this fic, and LOT bit mad with both him and Barcus for not immediately jumping on the helping Hunter train, even though she didn't even invite them to.) Point is, she seems to have got this very strong "you're either with me or you're against me" mentality that she refuses to be swayed on, and she has difficulty hearing or seeing things from other people's perspectives because she just feels like everything is a personal attack, especially in the heat of the moment.

That said, this level of anger issues (and how she's standing up to authority figures) aren't really my Viney's normal. She's usually just standoffish with strangers and chill with her friends, with a healthy dash of anti-authority sentiments baked in, but this situation is... unique and has pressed a lot of buttons for her. Said situation pushed her to go directly against Bump's orders in Chapter 2 in favour of going after Hunter, giving her a taste of disrespecting authority figures (and getting away with it), and now she's hooked. The fact that she went from standing up to Bump for the first time ever and then a few chapters later went right for attacking a Coven Head is so iconic, she's really speedrunning her way from Quiet Delinquent to Full On Criminal and I love that for her. Eda would be so proud <3

And THEN there's her opinion on Hunter~ I think they're SUPER interesting and I have so many thoughts and I'm SOOOO normal about them (lying), and THERE WILL BE MORE VINEY AND HUNTER CONTENT IN THE FUTURE :D But some of it has been hinted at, especially in Chapter 5 and I wanna ramble some more so I will >:3

So like, Hunter was on the Flyer Derby team standing up to a teacher, so he was on "Viney's side" which made her immediately like him. They played one game together and now they're besties, working against the system, sorry I don't make the rules. And then he literally kidnaps her, gives her over to the Emperor's Coven, which is basically the teacher's pet of Covens, completely against her will. And if you haven't noticed, a lot of her issues have to do with not having control of her own life and her own choices. Like, that's a pretty traumatising thing to happen in general but it really pushed that specific pressure point for her.

So yeah, as she so eloquently put it in Chapter 5, "she might have wanted to bash his face in just a little bit at the time." But THEN he literally threw himself in between her and a Coven Head to protect her. So, once she calmed down a bit from that whole Event and could see things more rationally, she looked back and recontextualised all their interactions with this new information (including the fact that the highest ranking EC member is literally school-aged), and ended up coming to the conclusion that he seemed more naïve than malicious, and is probably just indoctrinated. So she kind of feels like they're kindred spirits in the whole victim-of-the-system department, he just doesn't know it yet. He's not her friend or anything, but she does feel for him and would like to help him embrace his inner rebel, but has absolutely no idea how to do that so they just end up not really talking.

Then the Emperor's Coven attacks Hexside, and all those issues with the Coven system and not having control over her life and magic and the trauma of being kidnapped that one time are dragged back up, yayyyy~! And THEN she sees Hunter and Gus are being dragged around, Hunter unconscious, by some Coven scouts and Graye himself- and she just snaps and drags Skara into recklessly trying to save both of them. Because she is NOT about to let the EC abuse their aurthority and treat people she happens to care about like that. Then Willow and Bump show up, the scouts get away with Gus, and Willow convinces Bump to let them bring Hunter back to the homeroom.

This is where we veer away from canon but a lot of it still applies to my canon thoughts about her. So, again, Viney really wants to help him (she heals him and tries to be comforting through the whole scene) but still doesn't feel capable of standing up to Bump and the illusion teacher, and honestly feels like she's a bad friend for it. Especially since not only does she kind of feel like she owes him for standing up to a literal Coven Head, but also he was literally just getting kidnapped by the EC and she knows how THAT feels. She does believe everything he says though; she had assumed he left the Coven and then they kidnapped him to get him back, and him working with Gus makes sense to her since they were both being dragged around. She still has some mixed feelings about him but she doesn't think he's lying; she tends to give her friends the benefit of every doubt and assume the worst of everyone else, so.

Of course, Bump and the illusion teacher are immediately hostile to him, and she can tell it's really freaking him out. While most everyone else interprets that as him being nervous because he's lying, she gives him the benefit of the doubt and assumes it's because he's just traumatised and is now being bullied by random teachers threatening to send him back (what a revolutionary thought /s). And it's infuriating to watch someone get interrogated before they can even fully stand about how they must be evil and lying and dangerous, and she thinks they're just being unfair because they decided they're not going to trust him. Which is what authority figures do to her, because she's been labelled a "troublemaker."

SO, she goes full-on projection, throws those mixed feelings right out the window, and gets REALLY invested in helping him, because she doesn't want him to feel like he's completely alone with everyone out to get him. That mixed with her black-and-white, us-versus-them thinking makes her very defensive of him because anyone saying anything slightly critical of him must mean they also want to bully him just like the teachers! There is no other explanation! (He's her bestie now and that means she'd die for him, sorry not sorry.)

That's also part of why comfort is always her first go-to; she reassures him, she tries to talk him down, she heals him before getting him out of the airship, etc. because her first priority is that he feels like he has someone there for him and he's not alone. She's pretty loyal to her friends anyway but seeing so many authority figures push him around when he's clearly already in a vulnerable place gets her blood boiling and she is beyond ready to make that everyone else's problem. (In canon she wasn't pushed to the point of standing up to Bump nor did she end up projecting onto Hunter quite so much, but I think after canon Labyrinth Runners she spent a lot of time checking in on him, loudly defending him to any wary students, and just being very friendly. I don't think he knew how to take that haha)

IN CONCLUSION I think about Viney too much tysm for asking <33

things i scripted into my toh dr that either weren't in the show or didn't get touched on because for some reason i'm PUMPED rn:

*note- if you see last names in here that you don't recognize, in all likelihood the character didn't have a last name and i made one up

*also please don't crucify me in the replies if you see these people differently than i do this is specific to my interpretation of them and therefore specific to my DR

houses at hexside! i wanted it to be a bit like hogwarts and exist adjacently, but i didn't want the houses to be exactly the same so i made my own!! the houses are sphinx, chimera, griffin, dragon, pegasus, and kelpie

sphinx house- people in sphinx house tend to be optimistic, kind-hearted, charismatic, and quite outspoken. they work best on teams and tend to study better in groups! this house is most likely to spawn flyer derby players and beastkeepers (examples of people in sphinx house: skara flutter)

chimera house- ambiverted people who are able to blend in and get along very well with others. a consequence of this is that sometimes they can be easily influenced by others and what they think. this house is likely to spawn illusionists and constructionists. they work well on teams and are good at improvising. they tend to be on the shyer side and are usually very polite people (examples of people in chimera house: willow park, matt tholomule, edric blight, lilith clawthorne)

griffin house- extraverted aggressors who are very passionate about their interests, people from this house are often aggressors or come off as intimidating with very strong personalities. this house is most likely to spawn professional grudgby or quidditch players. it's not the most academic house, but it’s spawned a few very good scientists and businesspeople. they usually don’t think before they speak tho lol. everything about griffin house students involves very spur-of-the-moment, impulsive behaviour (examples of people in griffin house: amelia durand, boscha bennett, eda clawthorne)

dragon house- this is the house that i'm in!! introverts who are very knowledgable and powerful. they’re not pacifists by any means, but are generally not aggressors either unless threatened. this house is likely to spawn well-rounded students who excel in most fields, but it's also the most likely house to spawn gifted kid burnout (examples of people in dragon house: me, amity blight, raine whispers, hunter wittebane-noceda)

pegasus house- peacemakers and introverts with a lot of love to give, generally very smart and caring of others, always think before they speak and often end up being the ones to resolve arguments between others, generally considered to be the “mom friend” or the heart of their friend group, most likely to spawn healers or beastkeepers (examples of people in pegasus house: augustus porter, luz noceda, emira blight)

kelpie house- usually keep-to-themselves sort of people, whether thats their house or themself specifically. they get overwhelmed in bigger groups of people, and prefer to be in quiet areas either on their own or with a small group of close friends. they're most likely to be potion masters or botanists. this house spawns two kinds of people- the nicest, chillest person you’ll ever meet, or rich elitist scumbag. these students often struggle to make meaningful connections with others, despite (usually) being very kind and honest people as they definitely work better by themselves and don’t understand how to work with a team (examples of people in kelpie house: cat delisle, alador blight, darius deamonne)

lots of school sports teams!! obviously we have grudgby (i'm actually the star player! i can't remember if i've actually mentioned that or not), and willow introduces flyer derby eventually, but we also have quidditch (amelia is captain)

we do actually have a student council in my DR- skara is studco president and amity is her campaign manager and vice president (boscha thinks it's for nerds and doesn't participate, but she still goes to the meetings because all her friends do, me included)

social medias!! obviously penstagram = instagram, but i also added that icktok = tiktok and bootube = youtube (i've also seen someone on tiktok script that bitter = twitter but i don't remember who it was and tbh i don't really use twitter anyways bc i'm afraid of it)

on bootube we have access to all human youtube videos, but humans don't have access to bootube videos- so we can absolutely watch buzzfeed unsolved with our friends, but when i post goofyass videos on bootube, humans can't see them lmao

youtube definitely grew and evolved, but bootube kind of stayed in that 2015-2016 oreo challenge, hide and seek in ikea, bean-boozled challenge era. the golden era imo

Synopsis: Feudal Japan: Oroku Saki holds a funeral for his father's honor, the rest of the clan unaware that is was he who killed him. With Master Masato "missing" (Saki kept hidden the death of Masato), all the chunin voted Saki to be the next Jonin, ruler of the clan. Saki declares he will restore the honor of the Foot Clan.

Present day: April, Casey, Splinter and the turtles bring Dr. Miller to the Skara Brae, a pub owned by the father of Casey's friend Angel. Dr. Miller is expressing his reluctance to believe in reincarnation. Michelangelo likens it to playing video games: one can play as many different characters in an endless number of games, but still remain the same person controlling the game. Casey looks out the window to see a car pull up, and the Shredder step out, along with Karai and Alopex. Splinter, remembering a strategy used by Saki in the past, warns the group to defend the rear entrance, where sure enough Foot ninja enter moments later. Dr. Miller, finally realizing that everything he's learned that day is true decides to grab the Ashi No Himitsu and bring it outside to the Shredder, but he is stopped by a mean right hook to the face courtesy of April. He flees outside and pledges his services to the Shredder. Splinter instructs the others to leave and take the book with them, then steps outside to face the Shredder. The two battle briefly, until Shredder realizes Splinter is covering the others' escape. Leonardo and Raphael hold off Karai and Alopex while Casey, April, Donatello and Michelangelo leave with the book. April calls the police to the bar to force the Foot to flee.

A few days later, the group is at the turtles' home reading the Ashi No Himitsu. They discover how Oroku Saki managed to live for so long: by drinking a specially prepared potion and hibernating until awakened by one of his descendants. After reading the book, they destroy it.

At the Foot's headquarters, the Shredder expresses his displeasure over the loss of the Ashi No Himitsu to Karai and Dr. Miller. The Shredder offers Dr. Miller an ultimatum: find the secret resting place of Kitsune and be granted immortality, or fail and be killed.

Feudal Japan: Oroku Saki and Kitsune stand before the shrine to the Iron Demon, the interdimensional portal the Utrom uses to travel. Kitsune says she has found the key to permanent immortality, and all it requires is more of the Utrom's elixir. The Utrom steps through the portal with a canister of mutagen, and is then ambushed by a group of Foot soldiers shooting flaming arrows. Having acquired what they need, Saki and Kitsune make the final arrangements for their master plan. Saki drinks a highly potent preparation of the Utrom's mutagen and commits hara-kiri (ritual suicide), and his body is then put in a casket and submerged in pure mutagen. Saki died, but his spirit was bound to his body, and over the years his body and spirit were strengthened by the mutagen. Finally, one day his descendant Karai woke him with a blood offering, completing Saki's transformation into the Dragon Warrior. Saki is then ready to rule the land seen in Kitsune's vision—New York City.
