DOOM PATROL FINALE:
Just finished the series finale and while it’s nothing like how I expected it to end…I’m okay with it.
Larry finally letting go of that fear and self loathing to go and find peace with Rama was a long time coming. Why did they have to turn into an alien chemical sun? Idk. But at least they’re together and happy.
Vic finally found himself and has finally come to terms with who he is. He’s more than just a hero. He’s an influence and will go on to inspire so many people and make way for a better future.
I like how despite everything, Laura is still such a flawed character. They didn’t magically fix her or make her do a complete turnaround. She wants to be good but fears that there’s still something dark inside her making her incapable of being anything other than evil. But it’s nice knowing that she’s going to try. That Rita and the others have made some form of impact on her life.
Speaking of Rita, her death didn’t catch me by surprise. I figured she’s either bounce back last minute or get the boot. And as shitty as her send off was, it was very on brand. I’m just happy she found peace with someone… even if it was Malcolm.
Glad Jane is able to live whatever life she wants now. How she’ll do it in space idk, but at least she’s happy. It does suck that she didn’t end up with Shelly, but I don’t exactly hate her with Casey. Her goodbye with Cliff is what I thought would break me. That or how she painted their first meeting back in season 1. Boy was I wrong.
What hit me the hardest was Cliff. That ending? That fucking ending?!? Jesus christ. Wow. Very fitting that the show begins and ends with him. He finally got to spend his final moments with his daughter and grandson while at the same time not missing any of the pivotal moments in their lives. The good or the bad. A bittersweet send off to a flawed but loving character.
Really gonna miss these characters..
Like it or not, community matters. Surrounding yourself with people who care about you enough to even attempt to understand or support you is important. Find your people.
Also
You’re deserving of love. From others but most importantly from yourself. Love yourself. Always.

It is absolutely wild seeing folks complaining that the finale of Doom Patrol was "the found family broke up." And saying they thought Rita's speech about them holding each other back was incorrect.
The thing is, sometimes a group of people come together for a short time and help each other grow and change and heal. And then there comes a point where the folks in that group are ready to leave that small, protective space and need to re-enter the big bad world again.
Or to be even more blunt about it...season 1 started with the Doom Patrol in what was essentially, a residential health facility. There are 'therapy sessions' with Caulder and physical therapy for Cliff. There's the whole question of whether they are "ready" to get on a bus and go for a day trip into town. And when they're in town, the townsfolk treat them like oddities and the Doom Patrol struggles to deal with the stimulus and pressures of social interaction in the world.
And as the seasons progress this analogy continues as the characters build more relationships outside the manor and gain more autonomy, etc. So it makes sense that the finale would be the thing that happens once you've finished a treatment plan at a residential facility...you leave. Because if you stayed, you'd go backwards...you'd stop growing. And after you leave, some folks get happy endings and some folks don't.
That's why it's also wild seeing folks saying that Larry Trainer's ending in Doom Patrol came out of nowhere. My friends, ending up with his kid and his romantic partner, living out their lives in place where he can finally remove his bandages…is the perfect culmination of his entire character arc. They even managed to throw in there that Larry grows past his fear and allows his kid to be the one to take care of him, for a change. Same with every other character. Screentime-wise, Laura got the short end, true. But the actual story beats were spot on.
I dunno, maybe it's just so rare to get thematically satisfying endings to series nowadays that folks don't know what to do with it. Like, finally here's a show that didn't get unexpectedly cancelled after a cliffhanger.

For all its flaws, the only thing I’ll really nitpick is
Really, K? Ave Maria?

Time to go home 💔 And say: Goodbye
🎶"No man is an island, this I know
But can't you see oh?
Maybe you were the ocean
When I was just a stone
No man is an island, this I know
But can't you see oh?
Maybe you were the ocean
When I was just a stone
So here we are
And I don't wanna beg your pardon
And I don't wanna ask you why
But if I was to go my own way
Would I have to pass you by?"🎼
