how do you keep names within a single culture sounding phonetically consistent? its something ive been struggling with a lot but you seem to be doing really well at it

I am?? That's a relief!

I guess the rule of thumb I use is considering which phonemes tend to show up in which languages/dialects and grouping similar ones into related names. Like if we take Greek heroes as an example, we could formulate a list of some good ones - Heracles, Perseus, Theseus, Achilles, Patroclus, Menelaus, Alexandros - and recognize some patterns. This space of characters features lots of three-syllable names where the final syllable sounds like "-eez" or "-us". There's also semi-frequent use of the "-kl-" phoneme in the middle of the names, and they tend to favor "-e-" and "-a-" vowel sounds outside of the final syllable. If we wanted to make names that sounded like they belonged in this space, we could start by drawing on these patterns.

Actually Greek is a good starting example, because it's responsible for a lot of English's reflexive assumptions about naming conventions. Female names like Clytemnestra, Atalanta, Sophia, Hippolyta, etc all end in "-a" because "-α" is a common feminine noun ender in Greek, in contrast to the masculine "-ος". Hebrew names like Sarah, Ariella, Ayla, Daniella, Devorah, etc do the same thing, some even being feminine versions of masculine names like David or Daniel, altered by adding an "-a" sound to the end. I don't know enough about linguistics to know if this is a coincidence or a common ancestry thing, but I think this is a large part of why we trend towards considering names that end in "-a" as more feminine.

Different languages have different common phonemes. The sound "-tsu-" is quite common in Japanese but is very rarely found in English or the romance languages. Slavic names often end in "-ov" or "-ovitz". Many Spanish surnames end with "-ez". Lots of cultures commonly feature family name components that mean "son of" like "fitz-", "mac-", "ben-" or (obviously) "-son".

And even within single groups, different phoneme patterns can be tied in with different things. A lot of Jewish family names started off as "ornamental surnames" adopted by families when the government demanded they stop with that inconvenient "son of-" or "daughter of-" tradition, and are thus constructed from simple German nouns of whatever was within line of sight at the time, like "Rosenbaum" (rose tree), "Goldstein" (gold rock), "Bloomenfeld" (flower field), "Hirsch" (deer), etc. Thus, the phoneme patterns of a lot of Jewish surnames draw on German origins and have very little in common with the phonemen patterns of Jewish first names like Sarah, Deborah, Noah, Elizabeth, Esther, Caleb, Nathaniel, Jacob, Gideon, etc.

If you're working entirely in a fantasy culture, rather than drawing on outside patterns you can just start your own. Most of my character names favor "-a-" and "-e-" vowel sounds, which helps them sound similar to one another. I also use "-l-" sounds more than other consonants, and as a result, Falst, Alinua and Kendal all kind of sounds like they belong in the same space. Erin and Tess, meanwhile, have the same short "-e-" sound in their names with none of that familiar "-a-" present, and Dainix - the most geographically and culturally far-flung - has two sounds not present in anyone else's names, an "-ay-" vowel sound and an "-ix" ender. What little we've seen of Ignan culture and naming conventions has other uses of the "-x-" consonant, mostly "ainox", which kind of helps make that seem like a unifying factor. To make sure things sound coherent when we deal with more Ignans, I might use those unique sounds more often, naming other ignans things like Rase or Lainn or Onix to produce a coherent *vibe*.

Personally as a strict no-conlanger I don't worldbuild the underlying logic behind these patterns, but frankly I don't think you need to. Just roll the sounds around in your head, pick out the patterns you want to explore, google them once to make sure you haven't accidentally recreated an obscure eastern european slur, and have a good time.

ooohhh,,, what a story. i had my start on wattpad!! i first found out about it when i was 8 and on my school bus, i stood on my seat to peek over a highschool girl's chair to look at her phone 'cause i was curious and a bit of a dumdum. she had wattpad opened and was reading a story and i was instantly hooked and reading alongside her without her knowing ☆⌒(>。<) when she noticed me, she exited out of it and i saw the app name and got it as soon as i got home. ever since i read my first bnha fic, i've been writing. ((but if you mean writing stories in general? i remember writing one with a friend back in first grade, but other instances of me writing before 2018 were very rare!! i've always had that want to do something creative since i've been able to hold a pen, so i guess it makes sense lmao))

my family's always been adoring of cats. my very first cat was a big fluffy grey cat, the only memory i have of said meow meow is when my dad had to give him away. i think my parents have a picture of me petting him? for the next couple years we'd always feed the cats outside, some of them even coming inside sometimes to chill with us, until my mom came home one day with a big tabby cat that followed her up the stairs and into our apartment where he is now part of our family, fondly named "chunky"!! then a year later, a pregnant cat we'd been feeding for a while gave birth to kittens, of which we took in as ours :3

mweeehhh,, i don't necessarily have a dream plot for anything, but if i had to have one? i'd pick something to do with me and donnie because of course i would /lh (though i prefer platonic a TON more than romantic) and i'd want myself to write it 'cause i know myself best. ehhhh, not really?? i guess sometimes i get inspired by other writers' works, but if i had to pick some sort of media it would be music or games!!

i made up this soulmate mark bc at this point of time in 2019 i was rlly into flowers LMAO. enjoy.

summary: the day where jeongin found his soulmate!

genre: fluff, soulmate!au

pairing: jeongin x gender neutral!reader

Everyone had a soulmate. Most of the time, it was two sided, but there were some.... unfortunate one sided connections.

There were plenty of ways to identify your soulmate, whether it be a timer, matching tattoos in the same place, having colour taken away at birth but being able to see colour when you find your soulmate, or being able to see what your soulmate writes on their wrist on your own.

When you were 13, a doctor told you - at the request of your parents, who were scared that you would never have a soulmate - that you'd be able to identify your soulmate by flowers blooming around them. The flower blooming would be their favourite flower, or if they didn't have a favourite flower, a random one would bloom around them. No one else could see the flowers, besides you two.

Your parents found it funny, as they owned a flower shop that you eventually started working at when you didn't have any classes.

"Your manager really loves yellow, Binnie." You pointed out, placing flowers in the areas requested of you.

As he made you your favourite drink, he rolled his eyes, "More like she wants to find an excuse to buy things she doesn't need."

"Hey, let her be! At least she isn't spending the flower money on your paycheck." You smacked Changbin lightly on the arm, in response he pretended to be hurt and whined. "You're so mean!"

Laughing, you set the last flowers into the small pots on each table, "I only hit you lightly, those dramas we watched over the weekend must've really rubbed off on you."

You and Changbin were childhood friends. Although you were in different campuses, you both still kept in contact regularly.

"The only thing I'll be dramatic about is that I haven't even met my soulmate yet," He huffed, "This tattoo is so cheesy, it's making me wonder if they've watched as many dramas as you have."

Patting him on the back, you sighed with a smile, "Eventually, you'll find them. I still haven't found mine either, so that should make you feel better."

"But you don't even care much about it!" He pointed out, you snorted, "If I find them, I'll care about them then. If not..."

You both looked at each other.

"It eez what it eez." Simultaneously, you both laughed.

Sitting down, you sipped on your drink your friend just gave you.

"Yeah, at least I'm not a hopeless romantic-" which quickly earned you a "Hey!".

"But! I'm gonna get going, time to relax at the park then go back to the shop." You quickly drank your drink, making sure to throw it in the trash.

"Bye (Y/N), I'll probably visit with the usual leftovers. That's if there's any."

In just 3 minutes, you were sitting on the park bench, listening to music on your phone.

The scenery was nice - small trees spread around the grass area, you could tell it was mid-spring just by the weather.

A few birds, Jis- I mean, squirrels, and other animals would pass by, minding their own business as you relaxed for a while.

Once you felt like going home, which was after 13 or so minutes, you started to get up and walk out of the park.

That was, until you made eye contact with someone, your favourite flowers blooming on the ground around the figure which made you gasp.

With Jeongin as our protagonist for this part, the boy was walking to a cafe, feeling calm - there weren't any classes scheduled for the day, and his job at the convenience store near his university dorm started at night.

"Hot chocolate, please!" Since no one was around, he was able to go to the front without any waiting in line.

The barista nodded, "The usual marshmallows, I'm guessing?"

"You know me so well." "You always come here before a test- how could I not?" "This time, Changbin, there's no test. But I'm in the mood for hot chocolate."

Changbin let out a small chuckle, "Oh, I was thinking the other day - what's your soulmate mark? Wait... do you, uh, have one-"

"Of course I do! It's just... I only find out by seeing flowers bloom around them on the ground. Doesn't matter where, but I'm the only one who sees it." Jeongin smiled, sitting down on one of the bar stools, "Do you have one too?"

"Yeah, hold on-" Changbin showed Jeongin his wrist - written on them were the words "Sorry, I just got lost in your eyes, and sorry, that was extremely cheesy." on it.

Jeongin laughed, "Your soulmate seems quite sweet."

"Seems genuine too," Changbin hummed, placing the paper cup filled with hot chocolate in front of Jeongin.

Eventually, the younger boy left, due to the barista getting told off for slacking off - due to having a full on conversation with Jeongin about university, and getting into a debate whether aliens existed or not.

"They do exist! Who drilled it into his head that they don't?" Jeongin huffed, suddenly bumping into someone on the street next to the park and making eye contact with both a pair of eyes and flowers before closing his own eyes.

Opening his eyes, he looked at...

...his friend, Seungmin?

Jeongin, honestly, was disappointed, "You're my soulmate?"

Seungmin scoffed, "Jeongin, I have a soulmate already. You know this." and left.

However, Jeongin soon realised that the flowers and eyes he saw were actually in the distance.

His soulmate was you, the person behind Seungmin.

And his soulmate - you - however, was on the ground. You looked like the pikachu meme.

He quickly concluded that you fell out of shock. Walking closer, he outstretched a hand to help you up.

"Hey! I'm Jeongin, I guess you're stuck with me, soulmate." His laugh sounded like the cutest thing in the world to you.

You were already imagining your first date, a nice picnic alongside the riv-

"Soulmate? You okay?" Jeongin's voice snapped you out of your daydream, making you shake your head.

"Sorry Jeongin! I'm Y/N, guess you're stuck with me too, soulmate." You made light fun of his introduction, making him facepalm and shake his head with a smile.

As you two started talking about the most random things in a successful attempt to get to know each other, across you two was Changbin still inside the coffee store.

He was quick to realise you both were his friends, and once you two shyly kissed, he got the full picture - you two were soulmates.

"I should've introduced them to each other... what the fu-"

Clark: Man- I don't know how you do it, Tyki. You've seriously got to get us involved in one of these private jobs of yours.

Momo: How about first we worry about buying Eez some medicine?

Tyki: Yeah. It's best you don't know what I do for that money.

Clark: Oh ho- now I'm extra curious.

Tyki: For the love of- WE NEED TO GET THIS CHILD TO A DOCTOR!!!

Tony smiled at Hanzo, eyes trailing the ornate tattoo with a hungry look for answers...okay and maybe a hell of a lot of appreciation for Hanzo's body. (Stark-boy-eez)

For some time, Hanzo knew that the question would be coming sooner or later, especially when he knew that Stark was of the curious type. Not that it was a bad trait. Tony wanted to know how things worked and then try to emulate it as best as he could; to make it better. It was just one of those things that made him the genius that he was. It was what made him a Stark.

But, upon unpacking some of his things in the guest room that Tony provided after Hanzo mentioned that he would be in town, to which the billionaire insisted for the archer to stay with him and not some run-down motel, Hanzo could not help but be a bit taken aback.

However, even as he felt the man’s eyes on him, Hanzo answered nonchalantly as he unpacked, hoping that Tony would take his answer as truth and leave it at that. And yet, the archer knew that it was not going to be so simple.

“It might not fit from your perspective, but it is true,” the archer replied, giving the other man a side-eye glance to see his reaction. “These spirits have been with the Shimada Clan for generations and have been passed down one right after the other. Simply put, Stark, there is no science to them and no technology attached.”

Clark: You know... we haven't seen Tyki for a long time.

Momo: I know! I hope he's doing alright.

Eez: Me too. I miss him...

Clark: Where even is he? I mean, he like disappears for a long time then reappears like nothing ever happened and hangs out for a while. Next thing you know, he gets a mysterious phone call and is off to another part time job.

Momo: Well... that's just how he is! He does a lot of mysterious stuff, but in the end he's fun to hang out with. Plus, sometimes he comes back with a lot of money and usally helps us get money. Who cares what he does?

Eez: I still think he's a secret agent...

Clark: No... something's up. Like... something about him doesn't seem human.

Momo: Oh boy, not again...

Clark: Like- when did we last see him?

Momo: I don't know... a week ago?

Clark: And what was going on then?

Momo: I don't know... we were looking for a new job?

Clark: And what happened after we got the job? Tyki left for his other job.

Momo: Well- Tyki always comes back even when we... have... a job...

Clark: To help us. And what happened the one time Eez got really sick and we were short on cash?

Momo: Tyki helped swindle some guys for cash so we could get medicine.

Clark: Then a week after Eez started acting better, he gets a call and poof- gone. But then when we were all feeling bad and got low on cash, Tyki came back.

Eez: Hmm... I thought I saw Tyki walk through a wall once.

Momo: So you think he isn't a human because he comes at convenient times, gets weird calls to leave, and possibly walks through walls?

Clark: He might not even be real! The fact that Eez saw him go through a wall once just proves that he's probably just a hallucination or something!

Momo: ... You think... all three of us made up Tyki? Even though he's brought us... physical items and has had... multiple other people talk to him?

Eez: His cigarette smoke's real. And I've held his hand multiple times. What if... he's a ghost or a guardian angel?

Momo: Yeah- that sounds more likely than we all just made him up!

Tyki: Made what up?

Momo and Eez: Tyki! *Eez hugs him and Momo give him a one armed side hug*

Tyki: Hey guys! What're you guys talking about?

Momo: Oh nothin'. Just that you show up conveniently.

Tyki: *laughs* That must mean we're in a rut again.

Clark: Oh we're in a rut alright... Just what are you, Tyki Mikk?

Tyki: Oh no- are we doing this again?

Eez: Are you really a human?

Tyki: What kind of question is that? Of course I am!

Clark: *suspicious* Are you though...?

Tyki: Uhhh...

Momo: It doesn't matter now. All that matters is that he's here!

Tyki: Heh- and I'm proud to be here. Now who's hungry? I managed to get a little cash from my last job and the work food tonight doesn't look to appetizing.

Eez: Yay! You're the best! The food's awful here!

Momo: Well if you're paying...

Clark: Nnnn- you've better get me a job wherever you work. Or else I'm gonna have to start suspectin' that you're not real...

Tyki: Not real? Are you insane? Obviously, I've been gone too long. Let's go catch up on some lost time and get some food in Clark before he starts thinking Eez is fake too.
