I think I know why the doctor regenerated back into ten

so destiny wrote that donna noble must die, and as we've seen in 'waters of mars', 'vincent and the doctor', and plenty of others, there is no way of shirking destiny, destiny knows where you live, destiny wants to talk to you about your car's extended warranty, etc

however, we also know that donna will not die so long as she doesn't remember the doctor. if she meets jodie's doctor or ncuti's doctor, she's not gonna remember, bc they aren't familiar. they are literally different people, there's nothing to spark the recognition.

so, destiny gave the doctor his old face, in order to make donna remember, and fulfil her destiny

Personality: Calm, witty, empathetic, protective, thoughtful, resilient, easily irritated/annoyed

Abilities: Can see in the dark and can warp their own gravity but it's extremely difficult exhausts them quickly

Meeting the Doctor:

The 4th Doctor finds Lae on the edge of the universe, a sole human on an abandoned star colony with a failing life support system. The colony had been sending out a distress call but according to Lae it wasn't from him and he hadn't noticed.

The Doctor was cautious but it was in his nature to help any living being who needed it, so he let Lae tag along as he tried to figure out what led to the colony being abadnoned and breaking down. Lae admitted to having been there when there were people but he'd been put into cryosleep and only had awoken when his pod malfunctioned and he was the only one left on the colony.

They both discover an alien parasite eating the ships systems from the core outwards, as well as nests in the parasite made carverns full of corpses. Somehow Lae was the only one to avoid the parasites which had dragged each and every person into their nests.

The Doctor and Lae leave the colony, The Doctor setting a warning for others to stay away from it should anything drift too near and grow curious.

A lot of questions are asked during their time together and very few answered. There's plenty both of them didn't know about the other but that was okay, they had time to learn.

The Forever Companion:

Soon enough Lae becomes The Doctor's one companion that sticks around regeneration to regeneration, he loves each new companion as much as The Doctor and they mourn each and every loss and goodbye together.

During The Doctor's 9th regeneration they share their names with each other as a sign they'd fully come to trust each other and considered the other their safe place.

By this point it's been revealed Lae was born outside of time and space, in a universe outside of their own understanding, Lae has little to no memories of it and has fainted each time he's tried to talk or think about it. This fact is what allows for his assumed inability to age; he is aging just at a pace much slower than most living beings in their known universe.

Lae stays with The Doctor's 14th regeneration while he recoups with Donna's family, rejoining 15 when their timelines finally align and 14 regenerates. And thus so their adventure continues.

one thing that rubs me the wrong way about the ending of the star beast is that its not bc the doctor is male presenting that he didn't let go. and even if it were, wouldn't the doctordonna, being female presenting, have thought of it before?

the reason the doctor never thought of just letting go all of the power is because that is one of the defining characteristics of the tenth doctor: he can't let anything go. he carries the weight of everything on his shoulders, whether or not it's even his fault. letting go isn't even an option. he is appalled at the idea that eleven had moved on from the death of gallifrey (day of the doctor), hell, he can't even let go of his greatest enemy, the master (the end of time part 2)! even in family of blood, he invites joan to travel with him instead of letting go of a romance that he never even had.

so why did donna and rose think of it?

obviously this isn't the canon answer, but here's how I think of it

looking back to family of blood, john smith and regular doctor were pretty much two different characters. but the thing that separated them most was john's ability to make the decision to lose joan to save the world. the doctor, as we've seen with rose, is willing to sacrifice anything and everything to keep the one he loves safe.

why is the doctor less capable of letting go than john? because john was human. timelords live in such a way that they never have to let go of anything. they don't even have to let go of their lives! they can just regenerate! but humans, they know that everything has its time. everything lives, and therefore dies. humans are BUILT on letting things go.

the doctordonna couldn't let go, because her mind was battling between timelord and human, half and half. but donna and rose could do it, because their humanity was bigger than their timelord-ness
