Fast hätten wir vor lauter Bergsteigen das Schwimmen verlernt. Um dieser Gefahr vorzubeugen haben wir uns nach unserer Ankunft in Kolumbien erstmal auf die außerhalb Kolumbiens fast unbekannte Karibikinsel Providencia zurückgezogen. Dank einer ziemlich schaukeligen, dreistündigen Katamaranüberfahr, bei der die Besatzung hauptsächlich damit beschäftigt ist die Kotztüten auszutauschen, verirren sich nur ziemlich wenige Touristen in dieses Paradies. Doch die Strapazen lohnen sich. Karibikfeeling pur. Traumstrände, Reggae und eine unglaubliche Unterwasserwelt voller Haie. Keiner unserer Tauchgänge vergeht ohne Begegnung mit diesen wunderbaren Lebewesen. Und auch bei unseren ersten Speerfischerfahrungen müssen wir aufpassen, dass uns die Haie unsere Beute nicht streitig machen. Und nach 10 Tagen in diesem Paradies können wir nur zu gut verstehen warum der bei uns eher durch Rum bekannte Pirat Captain Morgan diese Insel als Basis für seine Raubzüge ausgewählt hat.

Baby Mako. Mako are the fastest shark in the ocean and the species I recommend studying as a build up to working with white sharks. Mako are reactive to light colored objects not “beginner friendly” if you’re very new to diving with sharks. I highly suggest hanging something small and shiny or bright colored down current when you’re potentially in the water with them as they do tend to rush in at times and bump and or bite things that catch their eye. Having a camera in hand is helpful to deter a species like this. If you want to dive with sharks please go with an experienced and professional guide in relatively clear water and turn around constantly. Be aware of your proximity to your exit and any point of interest be it a dangling shiny object, engines, fish, etc. even leaves and debris drifting by can be a point of interest. Minimize the amount of attention drawn to you by not splashing, not wearing bright colors, covering your skin (especially extremities.) Stay Shallow: The further down you go the more air you consume and most of the time there's no need to go very deep. 🌊⁣ ⁣ 𝟒.
