Day #7: Poker Face, Lady Gaga (2009)

I was a freshman in college when this went out. I forgot where I first heard of it – maybe on MYX – but I first knew her through her promotional music video for Dirty, Sexy, Money. I forgot what those series was about but I think Bobby from 911 was on it, and I remember it was kind of a big deal because its second season had Lucy Liu in it. Beautiful, Dirty, Rich was a great song though, and the visuals were, for my fifteen year-old self, new and exciting and interesting. And like why was she eating money in the video lol. The music video for Poker Face was really cool too. I loved her styling and the kinds of images that made it to the final cut. Her choreography was also different (and thus, to me at least, better) from what people like me used to see back then. I thought of the song as someone who is deliberately emotionally unavailable, but interpretations of Poker Face (although the Lady herself could have said it) argue that it alludes to bisexuality.

This ages me for a bit, but I remember liking The Fame so much. And she had only five singles then (Just Dance, Poker Face, LoveGame, Paparazzi, and Eh Eh) with no top billing in Oscar-winning movies or major awards. Of course, she’d go on to be one of our icons in our community, reach creative heights, and change how we see music, fashion, the avant garde, and how these three relate to one another.

Of course, stan culture and her beef with Madonna (which to me was really amplified by both fans and antis) would also follow, which caused me to distance myself from her fanbase, and as a result, from her. Still, I am so glad I got the chance to love and appreciate The Fame and The Fame Monster (Bad Romance was really when she blew up, and she even had a guest gig on Gossip Girl where she performed it in a red dress surrounded by ladders). I’m glad I was there.
