Daniel chuckled, looking back at his book. “Too many times. During finals season, Charlie and I practically live in the library and coffee shop. The librarians usually leave us the keys at about 11:30 at night until the openers come in the morning at about 7-ish. The baristas have our orders ready almost the second we walk in the door.”

Connor slapped the table with a surprised expression on his face which quickly changed to guilt when numerous people shushed him. “No way. I thought you were some natural born genius type or something that never had to study.”

“Really? All of that just for a good grade? It doesn’t seem worth it to me.” Connor said, crossing his arms on the table and resting his head on them. He looked up at Daniel, batting his eyelashes and smiling sleepily. “Well, maybe not in the short term, but the long-term is what I’m shooting for. I’ve had all A’s in all of my academic classes since basically the 5th grade, which is how I managed to practically get into Stanford with a full ride scholarship. So, yeah, it’s pretty damn worth it.” Daniel said, trying to be nonchalant about the Stanford thing, as he wrote down some notes. He didn’t feel the need to tell Connor that another reason he had to work so hard for his grades was that he knew that most of his teachers had the “anti-gay” bias against him and would have done anything to treat him as less than “normal”. Daniel knew that he had to work three times as hard as his classmates to get the same grade.

“Damn, Stanford and a full ride? That’s impressive.” Connor said with a look of awe.

“Now don’t be putting me on some kind of pedestal there, Smith.” Daniel rolled his eyes at the blue-eyed boy’s look of wonder. “It’s not officially set in stone yet, but I should be sending in my application for early action by next month and will know for sure by December. It’s my dream school and they’ve had their eyes on me since the beginning of last year - they even paid for my mom and me to fly out and tour the campus last winter.”

“That’s awesome. I’m sure you’ll get in.” Connor said with a confident smile.

Daniel shrugged it off, not wanting to get too excited. “I can’t know for sure until December, so don’t get my hopes up. But enough about me, how about you? What are the great Connor Smith’s plans after high school?”

Connor shrugged, nonchalantly. “I don’t know just yet. Definitely college, most likely with a football scholarship. I’d like to go somewhere out of state, just to explore a bit and California sounds nice - I’ve never been to the beach. I’ll know more when the season starts, though. I’d love to go pro, but I don’t know if I’m good enough for that.”

“Oh, Smith, you will be good enough to go professional. Especially with the right kind of coaching and support. Daniel wasn’t lying in the slightest, it was common knowledge to everyone who lived in their town that Connor was the best football player in the entire state. That being said, Daniel knew absolutely nothing about the sport. Or any sport for that matter. He’d rather be brainy than brawny.

Connor again looked kind of shocked and Daniel took a moment to study him. His light blue eyes widened, his eyebrows raised, and his head tilted to the side - it was surprisingly cute. Connor’s expression changed into a small smile at Daniel, “What?”

“Nothing. I’m just tired and zoning out.” Daniel said, shaking his head. He felt embarrassed to have been caught staring, but that smile - it had made his heart both flutter and feel warm as if he had just finished a mug of his favorite tea or something. Ashamed and uncomfortable with the feeling, Daniel ducked his head into his book and continued writing his notes.

“Maybe we should call it a night, then? C’mon, I’ll buy you dinner and take you home?” Connor offered with a smile. Daniel was half tempted to accept his offer without a second thought because despite the years the two of them had spent fighting, Daniel had thoroughly enjoyed his time spent with Connor.

It seemed as if they were on the road to becoming good friends very quickly. Hell, to an outside party, it might have looked like they were already friends. Daniel didn’t think he could ever fully forgive Connor for all of the years he had been torturing Daniel, but Daniel could think that might be able to forget what the other boy had done every once in a while - especially if it leads to evenings like that.

But Connor’s offer was enough to make his muscles tense and his temper flare at his words, “I can buy my own dinner, Smith. Thank you very much.”

Daniel slammed his book shut and gathered up his things as his mind continued to spiral downwards. It wasn’t until he felt a hand on his shoulder, “Hey, Daniel. Calm down.”

Daniel placed his hands flat on the table and closed his eyes. Only then did he realize that he was shaking. His hands clenched into fists as he tried to get a grip on himself. He knew he was being irrational, but he couldn’t help it.

After everything that Connor had done to him and that horrible party their freshman year, how could he so casually offer to buy Daniel dinner as if they were friends or something? Had Connor forgotten everything that had happened so easily? Should Daniel? Should they talk about it? It made Daniel so angry and overwhelmed, but right then wasn’t the time to discuss it. He needed a clear head first.

“Short stack, what’s wrong? What did I do?” Connor asked, his voice filled with concern. Daniel had to refrain from laughing at the irony of it.

Daniel shook his head and took a deep breath, forcing a smile. “Nothing, I just got some shit to work out when I get home.”

“Oh. Okay.” Connor said and Daniel could tell that he didn’t believe him.

“Do you still want to get dinner?” Daniel asked, hoping to distract Connor from asking about what was wrong. He wasn’t ready to talk to Connor about their history and how that stupid party still affected him to this day.

Connor grinned a wild and almost heart-stopping grin at Daniel, making his cheeks go red. “Absolutely, Daniel. Where would you like to go?”

Consumerism and Materialism

Part 1

All humans have basic needs, which typically refers to; having sufficient food, clothing, and shelter. Having said that, there is a tendency for people to engage in excessive consumption and waste. My consumer journal will help me list and review my spending and consumption habit for three weeks. With this information, I will address the issue of consumerism from my point of view and my shift patterns. I will relate it to several topics that have been discussed in class.

Week 1. October 23, 2019.

Total expenditure on grocery: $ 51.76.

Week 2. October 28, 2019.

Total expenditure, $24.50

WeeK 3. November 5th, 2019.

Total expenditure: $34.99

Poultry production

“When it comes to animal feed, the biggest problem is probably on the side of the resource with enormous damage being caused.” (Roorda, Corcoran, & Weakleand, 2012 pp. 39). Despite that, buying poultry is more sustainable compared to beef. “One can see that poultry production (both meat and eggs) is more environmentally efficient than other meat productions. This is due to, among other factors, very efficient feed conversation, high daily weight gain, and lower emission of enteric methane.” (Rodic, Peric, Ɖukiƈ, & Vukeliƈ, 2011).

Fruits

Most of the fruit imported has chemical added or preservation, not to talk of transportation, packaging, and etc. However quality fresh fruits are in a massive array in the marts at the shops in Sherbrook, Canada. Fruits are highly nutritive to the human body. Most of them in Canada, are all locally produced.

Seafood

“Global seafood consumption has more than doubled in the past 50 years, putting stress on the sustainability of fishing.” (Cattaneo, 2018). Nevertheless, this does not affect the ecological system in Canada because “Fish and seafood are some of Canada’s largest food exports. Fish and seafood products are strictly regulated to ensure the sustainability of this valuable natural resource” (Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 2019, para. 4)

Consumerism refers to the tendency of people living a lifestyle of excessive materialism that revolves around reflexive, frivolous, wasteful, or conspicuous over-consumption. Despite the numerous advantages of consumerism, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages of our planet. “An oft-used method for calculating the damage to nature and the environment is ecological footprint [… the amount of land a person use or country requires to support himself or itself ]. Over-consumption …on the planet is causing natural balance disrupted, rampant growth, plagues, the ecosystem collapsing and species extinction.”(Roorda et al., 2012, pp. 42-51). According to ‘The Story of Stuff,’ “In the past two decades alone, one-third of the worlds’ natural resources are being consumed.” (2017). “This means we are living beyond our planet means.” (Roorda et al., 2012). After the readings, I recalled how fashion trends changed drastically in my country (Ghana, Kumasi-Adum), within the shortest time and I kept up with the Joneses. Frankly speaking …” in the context of high fashion clothing, females are more significantly involved in the conspicuous consumption than men, and they use apparel more than males to communicate to others their status and identity.” (Segal & Podoshen, 2013, para. 4). As a woman, messages and advertisement that pops up on my laptop lure me into buying. The only advert that triggers me to buy is, for example, when there is a 50% clearance sale on goods. Sincerely, I never knew these activities had immense effects on nature. Little did I know that “In nature, nothing exists alone.” (Carson, 1962).

Part 2

Shift Patterns

My shopping during the three weeks is quite different from how I shopped initially. I am a student at the moment and have to be, thrifty in my spending. Undoubtedly, I spent money on my essential needs such as foods and beverages. All my purchases are the things I actually plan and shop on for the past three weeks. I buy all that I need at a goal though, it is heavy to carry, but since I want to cut cost on “bus fare”, I consider it worthwhile to do all the shopping together at a goal, due to the different motive I have now. My new knowledge in eco-literacy has made me begin to buy locally made goods that are sustainable to the environment. My spending has drastically been reduced, especially since I came to Canada. As a mother back in Ghana, I always went shopping at the market twice a week. Furthermore, every two months, I had to go out with my kids to get them some clothes and toys.” Kids not only want things but have acquired the socially sanctioned right to want—a right which parents are loath to violate”. (Shah, n.d.). Consumerism is ubiquitous and inevitable if I needed to be a good mother but there is a shift now. It is not easy to change from an old habit, though, but at least it can be my contribution to preserving nature. Additionally, back in Ghana, single-use plastic bags are given freely in the stores. However, since I arrived in Canada, I always have to go shopping with my own bag to avoid paying for plastic bags and if I take a plastic bag I reuse it. Again, I use locally made products, and the food I eat has also changed. I have a new menu now. This has aided me in saving money and to be responsible for the environment. My roommates see me be a kind person because I pick their cans to the recycling bin to prevent them from disposing of them in the thrush can.

The knowledge has made me conscious of my lifestyle and spend in moderation. I realize the environmental impact of our lifestyle in the 21st century is not sustainable, and rooms of spectacular opulence is not fulfillment in life we need to restrain ourselves. “The biggest threat to the United States and the rest of the world is not terrorism, but materialism.” (Parriot, 2011). Everyone has a role to play in making the future more comfortable for the next generation. We need to “Scream and scream and scream until you break the back of one injustice or at least get your knees to kiss back to life.” (Popova, 2019). The positive aspect is that a lot of researches and articles are written on consumerism. Shah (n.d.) states, “Children consumers grow up to be more than just adult consumers,” so we need to start from them. Parents need to restrict their children in impulse buying and stop using items for rewards. The notice boards of our schools must be utilized in schools about the effects of consumerism on the environment. We must support eco-schools and sustainable projects. I am optimistic that things would get better with time as we embrace a lifestyle of accountability and responsibility. Our economic interest needs to be restructured on how we share values, meet our needs, and how we produce to suit basic rules of ecology. If we really want to avoid consumerism, we must ignore tattle and stop following trends. After all, ”History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing new under the sun is truly new”. (Ecclesiastes 1:9, NLT). My consumer journal has helped me to bear in mind that I have something to contribute to the society I live in. I need to reserve nature and so do you.

happy valentines!

Surprise! I’m your valentine @lovinmullen! Happy Valentines Day and I hope you enjoy these little headcanons!💖

thank you so much to @swingsetboys for organizing this and generally being amazing!

-After Andi got grounded for the high school party her phone was taken away for a bit. Amber freaked out at first thinking that Andi was mad till Cyrus (lord bless his peace making soul) filled her in on the situation. A letter arrived two days later in Andi’s mailbox, guess who it was from? Amber. It was an explanation to her parents and a was signed with “Sorry if I got you in trouble! Heres my address and keep exploring the world Bambi! There are many more things like that pool in Italy” (Andi has that note in a scrapbook)Thus begins a pen pal relationship, full of not so unrequited crushes, scribbled hearts, holding of hands and eventually after stealing a flannel from each other...a kiss.

•Cyrus saw it coming from a mile away. No one just decides to go to the Spoon on every single day Amber is working and sit there with hearts popping from her eyes.

Andi will call Buffy or Cyrus and gush about a moment that happened. Little does she know that theres group call happening between the Kippen siblings, Marty and TJ are about to knock Amber out “Oh my god Amber if we hear about Andi’s eyes one more time!”. It becomes a cycle of calling. They even drew a diagram of how it would go.

Andi calls Buffy calls Cyrus in groupcall, then afterwards Cyrus calls TJ who calls Marty who calls Amber to confirm that feelings are present who calls Andi to talk about her annoying brothers. Then everything repeats.

This can repeat for hours but hey it works.

-Ambi becomes official and everyone e x p l o d e s. It was expected but WOAH IT FINALLY HAPPENED? The pining is finally over thank schnitzel

-To celebrate one month Andi made a bracelet for Amber, she was hesitant at first and said “Are you okay with a girlfriendy thing?”. Amber acts chill about it but internally is screaming.

-(They worked out Amber somehow getting Jonahs bracelet a while ago). Andi gets her phone back soon and they are the couple who uses 22 emojis per text but its adorable!

-In the end when they do the lanterns again Amber doesn’t put anything in hers. When Walker asks why she glances at Andi and shrugs “I already have everything I could wish for”

Bonus: Their first kiss was in a canoe! It flipped over causing them both to get soaking wet. On shore Amber lifted up their towel to block anyone watching right as Andi leaned forward to kiss her her again.

-Marty learned that Buffy moved away and that was the first time he messaged her since their fight, he apologized and said he hoped that she would have a good life in Arizona.

-She kept him waiting for a few days because she’s still trying to figure out her feelings, friendship or crush?

- “Marty, thanks for apologizing. Can we talk when I visit?” He immediately says yes!

-Once she comes back they talk. Its has a few embarrassing moments, some sad as well but in the end they both leave, hearts pounding and thoughts occupied with how even if they were friends how it could be different someday.

Bonus: Marty comes out to Buffy as trans and Buffy comes out to him as bi. They go to parades together and will wear their respective flags with pride! Marty is the one to paint the flags on their cheeks.

Bonus bonus: Its been almost 5 months since they talked about the crush situation and the FaceTime calls keep getting longer

Bonus Basketball: Buffy and him play during the off season of basketball, soon Marty joins the guys basketball team. They still play against each other every Saturday morning.

Heres some Hogwarts shenanigans!

Gryffindor: TJ, Buffy and Leo the Locker Boy

Slytherin: Amber, Reed and Natalie

Hufflepuff: Cyrus, Marty and Iris

Ravenclaw: Jonah and Andi!

The GHC became friends in 1st year, interhouse friendships for the win!

Marty joins the group 3rd year after the Yule Ball, he and Buffy dance so the group adopts him

Buffy and TJ’s rivalry starts in 2nd year after a fight with who got the Quidditch field, then he insulted her and her skills. Not even a rap apology was going to be enough for him to be admitted into the group. He is Quidditch-Player-Who-Must-Not-Be-Name

TJ lashed out at her because he wanted to be Quidditch Captain but she was the one who got the position

They make up after Cyrus has a Charms class with TJ, the reason? Both agree that Cyrus is a very soft kid and we will protect him at all costs.

(Buffy suspects more but doesn’t push at the reason why TJ does that little smile when Cyrus figures out a spell)

He writes an apology, near the end of the letter it says “You were right. You are the best Quidditch captain Hogwarts has seen” After this their rivalry is more of a friendship.

Andi finds the Room of Requirement and decides its going to be a LGBT+ club (she gets permission), the next time she walks in a pan flag appears above her head.

Cyrus helps her set up a network of kids who might want to attend

Amber, Iris and TJ are more of the popular group so when Amber and Iris walk into the Room on a meeting day you can imagine the surprise.

“Are you sure that this is the meeting Iris? They won’t stop staring”

Andi is shooketh because holy heck my crush is coming to the meeting be chill Andi, b r e a t h

She greets them and after some snacks from the house elves everyone feels comfortable talking to each other and introducing themselves

Amber and Iris say they’ll be regulars.

Andi had to lie down after that meeting.

Cyrus has Potions with TJ during 4th year. Mrs. Deborah, the teacher, sat them by each other to make a potion and it exploded first try. TJ got frustrated because he mixed up some numbers but Cyrus just laughs “Its okay! We can try again”

Thus begins Smitten Kippen

Don’t get him started on when they made Amortenia, they were supposed to share with the class and Cyrus declined.

TJ in that moment: Oh my god what did he smell

Cyrus to Buffy and Andi later: I don’t see what the big deal about Amortenia is? It just smelled the same as when TJ sits by me like he does in Poti-wait Buffy and Andi: Are you okay??

TJ and Cyrus are the disaster gays of Hogwarts.

They’ve tried to ask each other out almost 30 times now. But it always gets interrupted by something, a troll, a werewolf turning etc.

Cyrus has almost given up until 5th year where at a Quidditch game he gets TJ’s scarf.

It was like the meme where someone says their cold and the other person piles warm clothing on them.

He only needed the scarf because the blush was real in that moment, nothing could cool him down. He hugged TJ said a very rushed thank you then ran to the stands.

After that game he gave TJ a sign that said “I’m not Kippen when I say I like you”

It becomes almost a game to see who can out flirt who

Special blueberry macadamia muffin was delivered to the Gryffindor common room. Book about lizards sent to Hufflepuff with a note in the cover. Plenty of notes sent to each other during classes.

The one who makes a move is Cyrus, TJ writes him a small poem and he marches up to TJ after dinner to say “TJ Kippen will you go out with me?”

Nothing interrupted him and TJ said yes so fast it was like something possessed him

They have a cute Hogsmeade date <3

Buffy and Marty are the most competive friends anyone has seen. Mention Quidditch? They jump for the chance to see who gets the Snitch. Spells? Get under cover this is going to be a BATTLE

Due to these competitions they get sent to the hospital wing many, many times.

They ate too many Weasley sweets and didn’t realize they both ate a vomiting one.

Madam Pomfrey banned Weasley treats after that, said that students were too irresponsible (a healthy black market trade arose)

Once they got out and realized they both had actual physical harm happen because of a competition Marty proposed something

Marty: Look Buffy I love our competitions...but could we stick to banter for now? Buffy: You know what would be convenient? Lets go on dates, easier way to banter with each other Marty: *screams*

He agrees after falling down a staircase they were walking down.

(back to the hospital wing Marty)

By the next day it was back to regular banter! With the occasional hand holding and kiss if one of them said something a little too silly

This is the one year Jonah and Walker are beaten in the Best Couple Competition.

Speaking of Best Couple Competitions...the year Cyrus and TJ become public is the year they almost beat Wonah (the nickname for the pairing)

Cyrus kisses him on the cheek, his hand and on tiptoes he’ll kiss his nose but never the lips.

TJ is totally okay with this but wonders about it sometimes.

Skip ahead to the final Quidditch match, they’ve been dating a few months.

TJ (about to get on this broom): Hey how about a kiss for good luck? Its the last game it might work Cyrus (rolling his eyes): Okay you dork

Cyrus pulled him down by his collar and gave him a brief kiss

TJS FACE WAS BRIGHT RED and Slytherin was crushed by Gryffindor in a record amount of points.

Amber and Andi are a background couple most of the time, content with sitting in the library by a window. You can find them if you know where to look, the tree by the lake or near the kitchens where they sneak into for a snack. Amber is always wearing a headband from Andi and Andi will be wearing a charmed ring from Amber.

Bonus: After they both graduate, TJ is hired on a Defense of the Dark Arts teacher and Cyrus is the Arithmancy teacher. TJ goes on to be the headmaster! He makes new policies that allow students to be more comfortable with their sexuality and genders/

Bonus Bonus\: TJ and Cyrus go to Andi’s GSA weekly meeting and thats how they come out to each other. They walked in and both went “Shit”. That was the quietest they have ever been together. They walk out together and separate after throwing each other a quick smile.

Red Leaf Clover December 19th, 2009, My mom thinks it's a good idea to “write my emotions down on paper.” I think she’s full of crap but it's better than telling her about them. I have therapy every week on Tuesday where all I have to do is sit and talk about “how I feel,“ or “how my day was,” and other stuff she probably does not care about unless she gets paid. My job is better - I still hate my boss - but other than that I get paid five more dollars an hour so that's good. I have depression, anxiety, and signs of being suicidal so whenever she can my mom checks up on me saying “you okay?” or “wanna snack?” I’m tired of people asking me how my day was or if I’m okay. I just want to be normal. December 23rd, 2009, Today is my birthday, I’m fifteen today and as always I hate today. My dad was caught selling drugs and was sent to prison for about 20 years and I just played video games and ate cake. An hour of playing Grand Theft Auto 4 and eating cake someone knocked on my door, it was three hard knocks like they ran all the way here. “Hello is this Rich’s house?” The boy’s voice had a sweet flavour to it, it was strange. “Yeah who is it?” I said hoping they left. “Can I come it?” He said with passion. “Sure?” I said as the door opened, and the boy was... I don’t know, he was something. “So why are you here?” I asked as he tried to get comfortable on my couch. “I wanted to come down and say hi, and ask if you wanted to be friends .” confused I keep moving in my seat feeling a little uneasy aground him but not in a bad way.”sure” I say “yeah” trying not to look happy about it. he sits next to me and for some reason…….my heart start picking up speed….my face was burning and I was nervous talking to him, so I put in mortal kombat 9 and play it with him so we don’t talk about anything but the game. By 15 minutes of me beating him to a pulp in the game he says he has to go, “sorry man I gotta go me and my mom just moved here so we got some stuff to unpack.” he makes a smile which makes me smile, and then…….my heart starts to speed up again. He walks out the door and I watch him disappear into the night like a plane disappears into the clouds when it gets off the ground. My mom walks in and says “how was your birthday?” I look at her and say “it was alright.” and then she leaves the room, but that boy…...I never felt like that's before around…...anyone……..he’s cute…….I like him. January 15th, 2010, It's really early and I’m making my mom breakfast, I finish to see the time it’s 7:30 am I put my backpack on and shoes and leave a note to tell my mom that I made her breakfast and leaves to go to school. I take my bike and ride it to school, than out of nowhere I see him…...I’m so focused on him I crash into a tree and scratch my leg, he hears the noise and runs to see if I’m okay. “Are you okay?” he says worried “yeah i’m fine.” ~no I’m not~“I’m gonna go to school want to walk with me?” his hair white hair blows in the cold air “yes” ~I would love to being honest~ “ how’s your day?” he says “it’s okay” ~better now~ where walking and all I do is look at him sometimes look to where i’m walking so I won’t die but I like looking at him. Where at the school and he’s asking me something but I can’t hear what he’s saying I just see his breathing and say yes. “Perfect see you at your house after school.” he walks away, I walk in to my classes and work on tests and assignments but….all I can really think about is him sometimes the teachers would tell me to pay attention and shouting. “Mr. clover please pay attention!” I zoom up “yes sir.” he nodes his head as he….falls asleep. As I walk out of the school he walks behind me and screams in my ear. “HELLO BRO!” it felt like it busted my ear drums but no matter what his voice was calming, “sup” he smiles a pretty smile “you okay?” I ask about to laugh but holding it in. “I have army of two for you” my face lights up as I grab the game from his hands screaming “ OH MY GOD THIS GAME IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES I HAVEN’T PLAYED IT IN 3 YEARS!!!!” he just starts laughing and walks ahead “hey” he turns back at me “yeah?” “What’s your name?” he turns and says “my name is ghost” I ask why he’s named ghost he replies “it’s just a name I gave myself.” and he walks away disappearing once again. January 29th, 2010, “How are you Richard?” Mis.Ruby says I say good and she asked about my month and I say “pretty good, better than last.” she smiles and says good than I say “my birthday was….better.” Mis.Ruby looks at me with a face that says explain, “This kid…...came to my house and played video games with me.” I say face turning red “boy or girl?” I say boy while my face feels like it’s on fire. She smiles and writes it down, than erasses it. “That's good.” she says with a smile “what about your thoughts?” my face stops burning as soon as she said that. “I have…..done it…..” she puts her notebook down and says to me. “Look if you keep doing this I’m gonna have to turn you in.” I look up at her and basically scream “NO!!!” I pull my arms to my chest and tear up. “I’m sorry but I have to but this is the last chance to stop this if not its the 3 moths to a year in green waters psychic housing I’m sorry.” I look at her and say okay i’ll try and leave, before I could go she gives me a button and a drink “you're a good kid I known you can do this.” I open the bottle of coke and take a sip while walking to my mom’s car, I get in and my mom looks at me with a concerned face. “Let me see?” I pull up my sleeves and red marks up and down my arm shine off my pale skin. “Get out..” my mom says about to cry. “What?” I say with confusion “GET OUT OF MY CAR NOW!” I step out of the car rolling down my sleeves and my mom’s car speeds away. February 2nd, 2010 I’ve walked inside to see my mom on the floor….drunk , “mom?” she pops up with a look of disgust, “what do YOU want?” she looks at a half empty bottle of beer next to my feet, “nothing.” I leave the room to go to bed. The next morning I wake up too the smell of bacon, I put on my jacket because I can’t find a shirt and walk down stairs. “You want toast?” my mom tries to smile and not cry, “I’m sorry rich, is there anything I can do for you?” I look at her trying not to yell at her for what she did yesterday but I smile and say “you can hand me a pancake?” we both laugh. February 5th, 2010 Ghost pushes me to join a club, to be honest the only reason why I’m doing this is to get away from my mom and to be with ghost. “Hey, you okay?” he asked me and I jump “ye..yeah I’m fine.” he looks at me with his frozen blue eyes and my heart melts ( he just doesn't know it) he walked in a room and pointed to a bunch of people that I’ve seen in the hallways but never talked to. “This is max, philip, and jessie.” he smiles at me and yells “WELCOME TO THE SUPERNATURAL CLUB!!” I say hi like the anti-social person I am and for the rest of the day I just sit there and watch people and they stare at me, than ghost says “you know what the club has a meeting tomorrow wanna come?” his face looks concerned for a bit then he smiles really quickly too cover up he’s sad I know because I do it. “Okay, I guess I can come.” he smiles and pull me to the group and we just start talking about ghost sightings, legunds, and huntings and for the first time in a while….I was happy and if never meet ghost than my life would be worse. After the meeting me a ghost raced to my house and ghost won, “hey what are you doing tomorrow?” he asks me and I start to feel...warm “uhhh a movie?” his face looks surprised and turns red a little “like a date?” my face burns “m...maybe” he stepped closer to me with a smile “ you're gay?” my face burns and I step a little closer “I...I guess?” he puts his hand on my face and steps closer to me “well than why not.” ~his hand is so warm~ he comes closer to my face kissing me. My face melts off, “did I invade your personal space?” I look at him smirking, “shut up cute boy.” March 1st, 2010, I’ve been sleeping a ghost’s house for the passed month, it’s way better than at my mom’s because I have a real reason to wake up in the morning. He wake me up with a huge smile. “How was your sleep?” he says smile growing wider “really good cute boy” I say as he blushes and turns to get some clothes to wear down stairs. “You looked peaceful, which is cute because you always look on edge.” he says as he puts on pants and a shirt. “Yeah I guess?” I replay as I set up and get to the bathroom to take my meds and make sure that ghost doesn’t see me, after I get out and turn on ghosts ps3 and play fear than I put on a hoodie and go too my house too get some more clothes. As I walk in I see over 5 beer bottles on the floor and a note on the kitchen table and read it. “Dear waste of space of a son, your so pathetic you think that EVERYONE hates you well they do most of all I HATE YOU goodbye you, From no longer your mother.” I crumble the paper up and throw it outside because I left the door open, and then break a beer bottle. At first I just picked up the piece of glass, then i rolled up my sleeve and added a new mark……..”rich?” I look remembering that the door is open seeing ghost walk back and run, I run after him pulling my sleeve down but his house is an hour away from mine and by the time I got there the police was there with my therapist. “Ghost?” I say as my face is overcome with tears and so is ghost. “Let’s go Richard.” I start to run and before I could get too the corner the police catch me. “NO PLEASE I DON’T WANT TO GO!!!!!” the tranklize me and as my world got black ghost ran up to me and said with his sweet sounding voice “sorry ri…” I blacked out. March 2nd, 2010, “How are you feeling?” mis.ruby asks, “you haven’t talked to anyone, it’s worrying me.” ~of course I’m not okay my boyfriend turned me in and my mom left me on top of that I’m in a mental hospital, so yeah I’m fine~ “I’m okay.” she puts her hand on my shoulder as if trying to say she cares about me. “ no you're not….you need help.” I say nothing “that's all for today Richard goodbye.” the two staff workers take me back to the cafeteria and out ide the window of the waiting room for guests I see him….standing there with a smile, the staff worker says go outside he’ll be waiting. I walk outside and he’s standing there. “Hey ho….” I hug him as soon as he starts talking, “I’m so so so sorry please don’t hate me…….” he pats my back and I here is heart race, “i don’t” I start crying and he hugs me tighter. “Me and my mom are gonna to take care of you from now on oaky?” I say that's fine and we watch the sun set. “My name is ross by the way...my real mane.” I smile “last name?” he blushes “my full name is ross redleaf.” I hug him “I like it ross.” he puts his hand on my head. “But at school you call me ghost okay?” I laugh “okay ghost, and my full name is Richard clover.” he starts to laugh and say “ put our last names together you get red leaf clover.” I hug him and say with a smile that I can only do in that moment with him alone. “Love you cute boy.”

2018 Netflix Bucket List Part 1: Animation Nation

After watching some of the original Idolmaster today, I felt inspired to tackle my VERY LONG OVERDUE Netflix Bucket List. Although to be honest, two of these that I watched were on Netflix; some of the others I’ve watched and/or dumped were on KissAnime, and the remaining ones were on either Crunchyroll or Hulu. So yeah...not really a “Netflix” bucket list in this regard...BUT PART TWO IS I SWEAR

I decided to start off with the “animation” side of things, since I watch a lot of anime and cartoons, and I felt it’d be good to talk about some anime (and the one cartoon) I’ve finished up. Some of them are from months (or possibly a year back), but I feel like I should still talk about them anyway ^^

So here we go!

Completed Series

The Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls

I liked this one. It was cute, the characters were charming, and I found six of my favorite characters from it (one of them being the Producer). That being said, I can see why it and the characters were seen as bland by other iM@S fans; the show doesn’t do a lot to really develop its large cast. The main beef I had with it was its treatment of New Generations, the group with Uzuki, Rin and Mio. They were the three main characters in the beginning, but then they kinda got shafted mid-season and then suddenly came back near the end again. I do love them (especially Uzuki and Mio; and I’ve warmed up to Rin a bit), but I felt the drama that Mishiro caused between them was drawn out a bit, and that the ending was cute, but rushed. Despite its flaws, this show got me into The iDOLM@STER series as a whole, and I even had my brother interested in it for a while to the point where he started watching it--keep in mind that my brother’s a die-hard Love Live fan. I won’t say that it’s a good gateway point to the series, but I will say that it’s alright for an idol series.

Flip Flappers

My friend @infiniteglorias was watching this show about a year or two ago, and I watched it out of curiosity. I expected it to be a bit off beat, and boy howdy did I get off-beat. It’s bizarre, it’s funny, it’s got some pretty cool scenes, and an interesting villain backstory. It’s also super gay. Like, Symphogear-level gay. And even that’s a stretch; Shirabe and Kirika ain’t got nothin’ on Papika and Cocona. But it’s a good show, even if by the end it got a little mindscrewy.

And I just found out that there’s a Blu-Ray box with an artbook and art cards. R.I.P. my wallet.

BanG Dream!

Back when my brother was annoying the crap out of me with Love Live!, I was desperate to find a good idol series. I had started watching Cinderella Girls, but my brother took to bothering me about that, so I left it for a while (and also because although I enjoyed the show, I found it to be slow in some parts). If I had to describe BanG Dream!, I’d say it’s like Love Live! meets K-On!. I didn’t think I’d like it, and I thought the title name was kinda silly, but I ended up loving it. It really says something when you like some of the music better than Love Live’s...in fact, I can kinda thank this show for pulling me to other idol anime away from LL! and introducing me to other things like Tokyo 7th Sisters, The iDOLM@STER and most recently IDOLiSH7. I loved this show, and I can’t wait to see the OVAs for it. Oh, and I’m patiently waiting for the release date of Girls’ Band Party’s English localization! I might not be able to play it, but I pray it goes well!

LoliRock season 2 (cartoon)

LoliRock’s second season is leagues better than the first one. So much effort was put into making the five princesses stand out in their own ways. We got great songs, great outfits, Dark Talia and Dark Auriana, great episodes focusing on Carissa and Lyna, more worldbuilding, more Lev, great episodes focused on Amaru, and best of all, episodes focused on developing Mephisto and Praxina. That Praxina episode was a hard one to watch, because of how genuinely sweet her good side is--given events in the season finale only made me sadder. About the only gripe I had was Gramorr. He still didn’t do that much to interest me as a villain, although I have to admit his powers were pretty cool. At least he’s slightly better than Hawk Moth from Miraculous Ladybug.

Either way, if you want an excellent example of a great show for girls, watch this (and Ladybug too, if you want). You won’t be disappointed.

The Seven Deadly Sins

I’ve been meaning to talk about The Seven Deadly Sins. But now that I actually have it here, I don’t have much else to say, other than it’s one of my favorite fantasy anime ever (and my favorite happens to be the Record of Lodoss War original OVAs). It’s funny, pervy (but not too pervy, unlike some shows I know *cough* High School DxD *cough*), tragic, awesome, gory and likeable. It’s totally binge-worthy. And it’s one of the few shows where the ships are totally okay; I usually avoid shipping people with people who look like they’re twelve or younger, but the maturity with which the show handles it changed my mind.

And season 2 has been announced. Enough said.

One Punch Man

One Punch Man was great from start to finish. It was awesome and thought provoking for a show that parodies the Japanese superhero genre, and I don’t think I’ve ever laughed at a show this much (that is, until Blend S came along). Moreover, it showed how to do an overpowered character right. I haven’t read the manga yet, but I can’t wait for season two of this show to come out!

Kokoro Library

I found this little thing when I was cruising around for an older anime, Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-san (a classic favorite of mine). I saw the opening and dismissed it as a bland show probably based of a visual novel. But curiosity got the best of me, and I decided to watch an episode of it, just to see if it’s as stupid as I thought. Similar to what happened with LoliRock, I took my words back. This show’s a cute slice-of-life show about three sisters who live in the mountains running their parents’ library. The interactions they have with each other and the rest of the town are what make this show. I admit, the first part is kinda slow, so I wouldn’t blame people who dropped it if it was boring, and you can tell this is an older anime from like the 2000s...but it has a great soundtrack, adorable characters, and a really sweet origin story. I would give it a shot and see how you like it.

Currently Watching

The iDOLM@STER (Original)

Move over, Love Live. There’s some new idols in town.

I came across the original iDOLM@STER several times while looking for Cinderella Girls content. I thought nothing of it at first, but as I was finishing the Cinderella Girls anime, I did some research, and learned that these girls were the original generation (similar to how Muse was the original before Aqours). I decided “Eh, I’ll give it a shot. I like iM@S enough anyway; I’ll check it out before Side M, at least.” Gotta say, I am so glad I did. The original iDOLM@STER is leagues and above Cinderella Girls in terms of characters, story, humor and feel (although I still kinda like CG’s score more). In fact, I’ll go as far as to say that I prefer this over the original School Idol Project, which, while I think is pretty good, didn’t feel that spectacular to me, which is why I rank it 5th on my favorite idol anime list. Similar to IDOLiSH7, I don’t have a Best Girl, because pretty much all of them are awesome...although I gotta say that Iori, Hibiki, Makoto, Miki, Takane and Chihaya are my clear favorites, and I love Producer-san, surprisingly more than CG’s Producer-san, who was one of my favorites as well.

If you want to get interested in the iDOLM@STER universe, this is the series you need to watch.

Blend S

Blend S is great. I have never laughed so hard at an anime save for a few. And I love the character dynamic; even Dino’s crush on Maika isn’t really, really creepy since he’s not going borderline pervy like some other shows possibly would. I’m only three episodes in, but it’s been a great ride.

IDOLiSH7

If you can’t tell that I love IDOLiSH7 already, you haven’t seen my blog recently. Eight episodes in, and I’m in love. I can’t say much else other than that, but it’s right behind the original iDOLM@STER as one of my current favorite idol anime.

Glasslip

Glasslip is a little anime I found on Hulu. It’s about a group of friends who go through the trials and pains of first love during summer vacation...oh, and something about the main heroine, Toko, and the mystery dude, Kakeru, being able to see the future through objects--in Toko’s case, it’s through glass objects, hence the title. It’s supposed to be a supernatural romance, but think it does better on the romance, though; their attempts to explain how and why Toko and Kakeru can see the future comes off kinda flat. Honestly, the real reason I’m watching it is for the romance plot between everyone. It’s a bit of a breather between watching shows such as Fate/Zero and Gundam SEED (seen below).

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (Remastered)

Gundam as a series is one of the series I enjoy, but never really watched much of because I was intimidated by the universe. It is massive, and most Gundam anime take place in its own universe. Thanks to some help from my dad (who is a huge Gundam and Macross fan in his own right), I started watching the series again, starting off with one that I found the most interesting, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. I had started watching it years ago, but I forgot about it. I’m glad I gave this another chance, although I must be careful, because the last Gundam I watched was Gundam 00′s first season, and I binged watched it for hours.

Fate/Zero

I forgot to mention that one of my friends, @infiniteglorias, is a fan of the animated Fate series. I also forgot to mention that my dad is a semi-fan, too. Between the two of them, I became interested in watching the series, and my dad got me into Fate/Zero. I love it thus far, and the characters are pretty awesome. I can’t really say much else about it other than that, honestly...other than that I’m a complete newbie to the Nasuverse ^^

Shows I Need To Get Back To

Senki Zesshou Symphogear AXZ

I was following AXZ, and then that delay caused me to get off track. I will go back and watch it and include it in my next Netflix Bucket List (hopefully).

Haruchika: Haruto and Chika

Haruchika was an anime I found when I was watching Shakugan no Shana (more on that below). I thought it’d be a high school romance, but what it actually is is a high school mystery with a very, very tiny bit of romance...and both our male and female heroine are going after their teacher, believe it or not. I don’t find it as interesting as Glasslip, but I feel that I should finish it on general principle before deciding it sucks. Plus, it does have a great soundtrack.

Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter was a show I started watching around the same time as Lupin III (more on that on my next list). The only reason I’ve put it on hold is because of the above mentioned anime.

Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan was one of those shows that I heard was good, but didn’t watch because of the hype (I swore to myself that I’d stop watching on hype alone after what happened with Sword Art Online and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 2nd A’s). I watched it with my uncle and we both really enjoyed it, going through like 13 episodes. I haven’t watched it with him in a while because we’ve both been so busy, but I have it saved on my list to watch it later.

Future Shows to Watch

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen

The ONLY reason I’m not watching this one is because I haven’t watched the original in years and I don’t remember much of the plot. *sigh*

Macross Delta

Macross is another love of mine. After the amazingness of Frontier, I’m going to give the more recent Macross a try. That’ll probably be after I finish either iM@S or Blend S.

Violet Evergarden

Girlish Number

Girlish Number is another one of those shows that my brother annoyed me about, but I guess I’ll give it a shot to see what he really liked about it.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride

This is a show I’ve heard was quite good. It’s got some solid production values, and it’s a fantasy, so I’ll give it a shot and see how it turns out.

A Certain Magical Index

I wanted to like A Certain Magical Index, but alas, I found it to be a bit tiresome. At least its magic system and characters are a sight better than The Irregular at Magic High School.

Shakugan no Shana

It’s a shame I had to drop this show, because honestly, I had liked it at first. But then came the incesty bits between the two new villains that were introduced. On one hand, the sister was voiced by Yukari Tamura. But on the other hand, I do not want to see a younger sister slipping her older brother some tongue. Incest’s one of the few things that will make me drop a show like it’s a plague, and that’s what I did with this show. I just couldn’t stomach it.

reading: wk50-52

3 weeks + 3 journal entries for how i was gonna start this post. in essence: goodbye 2020, my god has it been a rollercoaster, albeit one sloping gently downhill into familiar melancholy. i never thought i’d feel like this again, yet it’s like slipping into a warm ocean where i can float forever, safe in the salt and waves lapping at my face.

stay tuned a ‘best of 2020′ list and what i want to read next year that isn’t my damn textbooks. and maybe some personal updates depending on how much wine i drink this evening. happy new year, my loves.

week 50: penultimate week of o+g rotation: i would say the end is in sight but in fact i have lost all motivation, hate my degree (well, specifically, the course administration), had a breakdown outside my exam followed by the most embarrassing brain freeze ever during a panel discussion that i was speak on, took several days to reply to everyone about said exam breakdown, am convinced i will fail my 5th year exams, aaaand dealt with all of this by handpainting christmas cards all saturday. welcome 2 the fun house !

week 51: final week of placement: i struggled through the final week of my placement (literally popped into my placement for 2 hours to have a tutorial, get signed off, and collect my things), failed my mock osce, and went home. so unbelievably drained.

week 52: christmas & post-christmas liminality: feeling vaguely restored by the virtue of reading many books, watching many movies, curling up by the fire, eating many christmas cookies, and having barely any social interaction outside of my family and our cat and dog. still absolutely drained; still very terrified of my next placement and of failing this year. all i want is to move to a city where no one knows me and i can be something new, but alas. eighteen months until i graduate; forty-two until i finish my foundation programme and can truly set off into the big blue yonder of the world.

books

✩ The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - Steig Larsson (finished) so i actually would have much preferred this to have kept its original swedish title, ‘män som hatar kvinnor’ (’men who hate women’) - it’d have been less manic pixie dream girl and more reflective of larsson’s point, even if larsson is v guilty of the former. it’s a good book - larsson’s grasp of plot is really excellent and i really enjoyed the twists and turns, even if the pacing of the big reveal was a little too rushed for my liking. however, i find his characters a little off - many of them are great, especially berger & henrik vanger, but i find blomkvist a little self-insert at times (he’s a financial journalist! but not like other financial journalists! and he has a sexy editor lady with whom he has an open relationship! and he sleeps with this cool hacker girl who immediately trusts him!), and lisbeth is...very ‘traumatised manic pixie cyberpunk girl’ if you ask me. which is a little uncomfortable. also not to mention the rape scene - which is vile. overall: good, intrigued to see if larsson will flesh lisbeth out to be less of a caricature in the sequels.

✩ The Orphan Master’s Son - Adam Johnson (finished) this book has lost none of its magic for me, absolutely none. if anything, re-reading it a few years later has made me appreciate so many things: the characters (even more than before! if that’s possible!!), the abject heartbreak of the second mate and his wife, the trip to texas (i got far more out of the political side this time), the relationships in the camps (the captain of the junma and li mongnan - hold me whilst my heart BREAKS), the way that johnson plays with narrative from the loudspeakers to the interrogator to the dreamlike quality of jun do’s own new life in pt 2. as a teenager, i was fascinated by the setting, the double-farce of the propaganda vs life, the passages about the second mate’s wife and her silken yellow dress - i thought that jun do was a bland narrator, which i now see couldn’t have been further from the truth. i have so, so much respect for johnson as an author and this book really is a formative part of who i am, in ways that i could not express.

✩ Dark Matter - Michelle Paver (finished) another re-read. michelle paver is the queen of ghost stories and things that go bump in the night (see: spirit walker in the chronicles of ancient darkness) - this book absolutely terrified me the first time that i read it, so i made a point of finishing it in the daytime this time. perhaps that’s why it didn’t hit as hard this time - it was less terrifying. however, really appreciating her choice to make the narrator gay, without ever making a deal out of it or naming it - it’s the lil things like working class arctic explorers being disgustingly in love with their charismatic expedition leaders, ya know? big fan. also huge fan of her descriptive prose - she is also the queen of arctic imagery. her prose, combined with the gorgeous black and white photos at the start of each chapter, have not helped my desire to sack it all off and go work as a doctor in the faroe islands or iceland.

✩ The Diet Myth - Spector (on hold) i left this book at uni bc i didn’t want to ruin my own christmas with his awful writing style, if you want an indication of how much i dislike this book.

✩ Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - Caitlin Doughty (in progress) a christmas gift that i’m currently reading. i’m so morbid and am learning so much, although i feel like some of the chapters are burbling on with anecdotes but don’t hammer home many points (although maybe it’s bc as a medical student i’m less easily shocked than your average reader) - bit confused as to where we’re going but i’m along for the ride.

✩ Calling a Wolf a Wolf - Kaveh Akbar (in progress) beautiful. in progress - his imagery is quite beautiful but i struggle to sit and read poetry.

✩ The Secret History - Donna Tartt (in progress) re-read. i sink back into old books like familiar lovers, like hot baths. so much comfort.

films

✩ Dead Poets Society (1989) why were the deleted scenes deleted. WHY. rewatching it, i felt some of the character development and relationship development was a little rushed - yet the deleted scenes could have fixed that. WHY WERE WE ROBBED. as ever, emotionally devastated as someone who loves languages and books and words, but ultimately chose medicine and science. as ever, very very sad over neil perry and aching for todd anderson. newfound appreciation for meeks + dalton. that punch at the end? *chef’s kiss*

✩ Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) i am inducting my sisters into lotr and they are powerless to stop me.

✩ Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince (2009) my favourite of the hp movies.

✩ Atonement (2007) this film and i have a long history - i first saw the start of it many years ago, when i did not know what c*nt meant, so was understandably a little bit lost, but also keira knightley in that green dress was a true gay awakening moment. i love the cinematography - it’s so ridiculously dreamlike and gorgeous, and the set design for the house is just beautiful. as are keira knightley and james mcavoy. also, the soundtrack with the use of the typewriters and lighters as drumbeats - my GOD, so beautiful. the second half of the film felt very rushed to me - the reveal that some of it was briony’s fiction made sense, but it lacked the stunning quality of the first half, both plot-wise and camera-wise (although the dunkirk scene was brilliant; love a long, revolving camera pan). i particularly hated every scene with briony in it - v lacklustre - and also the scene with luc remembering cecilia, it just felt forced and gimmicky. the novel definitely wins out for me.

i haven’t listened to any podcasts in a while, bar a few episodes of the magnus archives whilst cooking and running errands, BUT i did record one!! the episode will be up in the new year but we have a few back episodes on Right to Refuge, which covers refugee/asylum issues and is by the charity that i work for!

(2018), Obstet Gynecol Int. a short america-centric lit review that i read whilst writing up my reflective pieces - not as good as the above one but has more (horrifying) statistics: 200 million women affected worldwide; 6,000 girls cut each day; 85% will have some form of medical complication in their lives, from psychological/sexual to gynaecological to obstetric including death; estimated death rate of 1 in 500; 60.5% of affected women reported fear when their spouse wanted sex compared to 2.4% of unaffected women.

(2017), Reprod Health intersection of two things i spend a lot of time thinking about: human rights & medicine. interesting - to re-read again and consider and learn more about things like treatment-monitoring bodies, etc.

✩ The macho sperm myth - Robert D Martin, Aeon a wonderful friend sent me this! i am somewhat lost by the meandering course of the article but interesting points are raised. also the idea that some scientist was like ‘i absolutely KNOW that the heads of sperm contain tiny homunculi; i cannot see them but they are THERE’ is just hilarious.
