that post about Guy being like Atticus got me thinking about ways him and Thomas could usurp the meet-cutes of other Downton characters and it is… very fun. Have a little Mary/Matthew:

“Bad enough we don’t get to go to France,” Thomas grumbled. He leaned against the doorframe of the servants’ hall and crossed his arms. The footmen, the maids, Anna, and—for some reason—Daisy were all still busy with the luggage, but Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Patmore, and the ever-unhelpful Denker were enjoying a nice cup of tea. In the back of his mind Thomas was contemplating whether he had time to do the same or if he was better off having a cheeky cigarette. He wanted to complain first, though. “But now we’ve got to squeeze around all this ruddy equipment to get our jobs done, on top of catering to all these film people.”

“You say that like film people are worse than anyone else,” Mrs. Hughes said, half amused and half chiding him. He scoffed.

“Just you wait—between the pair of them there’ll be no end of trouble, I’m sure—”

“Excuse me.”

It was an unfamiliar voice, and somewhere between that simple strangeness and the accent, Thomas’s heart dropped. He spun around and straightened. Guy Dexter came down the steps, a faint smile curving his lips; Thomas couldn’t tell if he had heard or not.

“Can I help you, sir?”

“Yes—I wondered if there might be any black shoe polish about.” He held up a hand to reveal a pair of oxfords, looking rather dull about the toe. “My dinner shoes could use a going-over and I forgot to pack some.”

“Certainly, sir. The boot room is just down the hall—if you’d like to leave them with me, I’ll see to it that a footman has them ready before the dressing gong.”

“No, no, I’ll do it myself,” Dexter said congenially, setting off in the direction Thomas had indicated. “I wouldn’t want to cause any trouble.”

Behind him, Denker snickered.
