Destroyermen
Tumblr media
I don't know if any of you have ever heard of this series, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it. It is, in the simplest terms I can put together, the story of a WW1-era US Navy destroyer and a Japanese battlecruiser getting isekai'd from 1942, to the exact same year and spot, only on an alternate era where the dinosaur-killing asteroid never hit, so dinosaurs survived, there are sea monsters, and more. One species of raptors has evolved to a slightly more humanoid bodyplan and developed sapience. They are fighting a race of lemur-people from Madagascar. The two WW2 ships get mixed up in this. Further insanity follows. We get things like "Britain, but in Hawaii", "Conquistadors, but Aztec", and "Roman Legions, but with WW1 tech and Lemur People". We get sympathetic characters on every side (yes, even the raptor-people - we even get the author writing a later raptor character with some very... interpretable language when talking about a human companion). There is a TON of cool action, naval, infantry, and aerial. Definite recommend, just on the craziness alone.

Okay people, here we go:
Baldy's Book Club
Episode 1: "Into the Storm"
By Taylor Anderson, Book 1 of the Destroyermen series.
Okay, so, on the recommendation of my most esteemed mutual @frogblast-the-ventcore , I have been coerced to read the Destroyermen series, and post my thoughts about them as I do.
So, for part 1, here we go. I'm going to assume those of you reading have read the book, cause if you haven't, you should be going to buy it, right now. I mean it.
First and foremost, this book was written by a ww2 nerd, for ww2 nerds, and by god does it show. Taylor Anderson is a professor of history, and it shines through in every part of the book. From the technical details of the USS Walker, to the shortcomings of the Mk. 14 torpedo, to the attitudes, lives, and habits (both good and bad) of a 1942 Asiatic fleet destroyerman. Speaking of which, call me Dean Kamen, cause that's a perfect segway to talk about
The Characters
To begin with, do not expect a normal person's assessment of these characters. Expect a Normal™ person's view of them.
First: Captain Matthew Reddy. Oh my lord this man. He's an absolute mess, knows it, and yet cannot let that show, because, well he's stranded in an alternate universe with humanoid lemurs and sapient velociraptors. In my head, he's got total divorced dad energy going on, 30-something going on 50 because of stress, greying at the temples but still hot in a DILF kind of way, not overly muscular, and with one hell of a voice. (I'll admit the audio book colored my perception, but it's a fantastic audio book so I don't care.)
Next, Chack-Sab-At, the biggest and most baddass guyfailure to ever live. "Oh, I'm a pacifist" then the very second that an enemy without moral repercussions comes along he's all "I love violence and killing and murder and death and injuring people and blood and biting and cutting and-" like, seriously, dude says he's a pacifist before turning around and becoming Furry Doomguy.
Next, Dennis Silva, he-who-was-told-not-to-fuck-the-monkey-cats-but-did-it-anyway. Moving on,
There's literally more I love about the characters than I want to sit here and type out, so I'm going to cut it short, but Oh My God these characters are A+.
Next, I just want to touch on something these books made me feel. A lot of times, as an USAmerican with an actual brain, I can get bogged down in the fucked-up shit my country has done and feel like I can't celebrate what makes the US cool without making it sound like I'm excusing all the bad stuff, but this book kinda made me stop for a minute and go "man, the US is kinda fucking rad, when you think about it." Because, you know what? It is. Yeah, we've done fucked up shit, but we've also done some pretty awesome stuff. For every My Lai Massacre, there's a moon landing. For every Trail of Tears, there's a Berlin Airlift. Sometimes, it's okay to take a moment and just go "Fuck yeah, guys. Were pretty cool." Because this book really makes you feel that, at least it did to me, but I'll get off my red, white and blue high horse and keep going.
Alright, now we come to the part that I need to get out...
THE BRITISH EAST INDIA COMPANY
Literally everywhere in my life, I am haunted and stalked by the specter of a long-dead megacorporation. In every piece of media, in every topic I research, no matter what, they're there. As the Frogman quoted from me in a meme a while back "I'm being haunted by the ghost of English imperialism". What the fuck? Anyway, if you wanna chat about the book, please do, because I am at terminal levels of Fandom.
Anyway, if you want to read along for the next Baldy's Book Club, we'll be reading Crusade, the next book in the Destroyermen series.
(P.S. Frogman, I know this review isn't very good, but my brain is soup rn so this is whatchu get.

Destroyermen Series, Alliance Uniforms
Tumblr media
Image 1)  Here are my renditions of Alliance uniforms and equipment, at the time of their second offensive in July 1943 (DISTANT THUNDERS). For variety's sake, I am assuming at this point that the second wave of allies from Surabaya and Filpin will still have some non-standard equipment left over from their original standing armies. Does anyone know details I missed? I don't remember if the original allied shields had any kind of painted or engraved design on them for instance?
Tumblr media
Image 2)  Let me say first that I am taking liberties with Shinya's uniform. There were references to him wearing a similar rhinopig-armor uniform as his troops while in Malay; but I couldn't seem to find anything about how he dressed as a general in the east, which was what I wanted, so I went with a copy of his IJN uniform. Probably not canon.
Also, if anyone has an image of a British NAVY shako, please send it to me because I couldn't find one.
Republic uniforms and equipment were modeled after German uniforms from ww1. The colors of the cavalry capes were different for each regiment.
Kim's uniform is the one he is described as having on his first appearance; he probably wore something less ornate on campaign. That hat the comanche is wearing is made from the head of some grik-like animal. If you wouldn't mind helping me, please comment on where descriptions of uniforms can be found in the books!

Just thought about the destroyermen books for probably the first time in 4 years. I have to say, while it’s a deeply, deeply racist book series, I think the singularly most insulting thing about it is that there is one (1) Japanese character who ISN’T ontologically evil, and it is explicitly because he was educated in America.

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to another instalment of the Fandom project! This time, we are once again discussing books, this time, young adult books. Check out previous posts in this series here.
Once again, the list is quite long, so I will just mention the wiki and not go into deeper details about what each one needs help with. If I did that, the post would be too long, and no one would have time for it.
As I've mentioned in previous posts, if you can create & edit a Tumblr post, you can edit articles on a wiki. Here, you can find an easy step-by-step guide on how to get started with contributing, but you can also message me & I will help guide you through any question marks.

Do you give recs? I'm looking for some woke-free medias to consume (books particularly, but it can be anything)
It's hard to give recs without knowing your taste, but I'll try. Necessarily, many of these will be older things, so sorry if that bothers you
Books:
The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell (sci-fi)
The Nightside series by Simon R Green (urban fantasy/detective noir)
The Deathstalker series by Simon R Green (there are gay side characters in a few of the books, but the books themselves aren't woke. Just good sci-fi/space opera)
Any Conan the Barbarian story written by Robert Howard or Robert Jordan (fantasy)
The Destroyermen series by Taylor Anderson (disclaimer I'm only up to book 4 out of 15 and the last book was published in 2020 so it may have gotten woke or started to suck later on, but right now it's pretty good and pretty pro-American. Alternate history action sci-fi)
The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher (urban fantasy)
Any Dune book by Frank Herbert or Kevin J Anderson and Brian Herbert (sci-fi)
The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik (only read the first three out of nine so same disclaimer as Destroyermen. Alternate history fantasy. Napoleonic Wars with dragons)
The Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell (also the excellent film adaptations of the books with Sean Bean if you can find them. Historical fiction. You follow Richard Sharpe through the ranks of the British army during the Napoleonic Wars)
The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien (the grandfather of modern fantasy)
The collected works of HP Lovecraft (definitely not PC or woke. His cat makes an appearance in one of his stories. Horror)
The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker (horror. Hellraiser was based on this novella. tentative rec because it's good, but there's a lot of mentioned sex and very liberal attitudes towards sex so I don't know if you'd consider that woke or not. The sex obsessed characters are the bad guys though)
Any of the pre-Disney "canon" Star Wars expanded universe books.
Any of the Star Trek books written by William Shatner (they're all a connected series though so read them in order)
If non-woke is your main criteria, I'd suggest giving the Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski a try. I personally hated the little bit of the first one I read, and I hate the Witcher series in general, but no one can argue that the Witcher is in any way woke, lol
Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher (fantasy)
Phantoms by Dean Koontz (also recommend the movie with a very young Ben Affleck, but if you rent it on Prime use headphones. Audio is all fucked up through a surround sound system. At least it was when I rented it a few years back. horror)
The Legend of Drizzt series (and the associated sub-series) by RA Salvatore (fantasy. I stopped reading at the Transitions series--books 20-22--because I personally didn't like them and the way they changed the characters and the setting, but YMMV. I'd highly recommend books 1-19 though. Great fantasy series in my favorite D&D setting, the Forgotten Realms)
The Giver by Lois Lowry (young adult book, but has a great message of individuality and anti-government)
Since you wanted books mostly I'll just breeze through movies, shows, comics and games with a few of my favorites:
Movies - Equilibrium, Lord of the Rings, pre-Disney Star Wars, Alien, Aliens, Predator, Predator 2, Hellraiser 1 + 2, Friday the 13th series, Halloween series, The Patriot, In the Mouth of Madness, Sonic the Hedgehog 1 + 2
Shows - Jericho, X-Files, Star Trek (OS, TNG and DS9 especially. Anything nu-Trek is easily skippable), Chernobyl, Avatar The Last Airbender, Lost (it's not confusing if you just pay attention!)
Anime - Fullmetal Alchemist (both series are good but Brotherhood follows the manga more closely), Death Note, Bungo Stray Dogs, Yowamushi Pedal, Ace of Diamond, Yuri on Ice (super gay but funny and heartwarming and not woke beyond the two male leads being stupidly in love with each other even if it's never mentioned explicitly), Street Fighter II V. Honestly most anime isn't woke at all, so just look around for things that seem interesting to you and you're probably good there
Comics - Batman: No Man's Land, Batman: Knightfall, Batman: Bruce Wayne Murderer/Fugitive, Batman: The Killing Joke, any Marvel Masterwork collection, any Dark Horse Alien or Predator or Alien vs Predator comic, Spawn. Special mention: Isom and the Rippaverse. The Rippaverse is a new shared comic universe created by Eric July, self-described anarcho-capitalist and contributor to The Blaze that's specifically designed from the ground up to not be woke and offer a customer first mentality. They promise that the various books they're planning on releasing will focus on story and characters, not politics or social justice crap. So far, only Isom #1 has come out, and I haven't gotten my copy yet, but most people who've read it seem to love it, and that one comic alone has already sold over 43,000 copies and made $3.7 million so early adopting is probably a safe bet.
Games - Metal Gear Solid series, Batman: Arkham series, Halo 1-3, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Greedfall, Dishonored series, Edge of Eternity, Metro series, Mafia 1+2, Elden Ring. Pretty much any game before the mid-2010s is a safe bet for non-woke, so like anime, you should just look at older games you think you might like, or their remasters, and go from there.
So that's my list. It's by no means complete, and there's no real order to the recs, so just look them up and see what, if anything, appeals to you. If you, or anyone else, want more specific recommendations or an opinion on a certain title or series that I mentioned or even ones I didn't, feel free to ask. I'll help if I can. Mostly what I read and watch are sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and things like that. I don't really read typical bestsellers or westerns or comedies. So I might be much help with those genres.

WINDS OF WRATH (Taylor Anderson)
Likely the last in the Destroyermen series as various strands of conflict and hope become close to resolution.   It ends, much as out 2nd World War does, with a cold war arising from the ashes of the end of a global conflict.   Far better writing than recent books in the series.   The series doesn’t end with a Hollywood style glow, but with a sense that the worst is over and beauty and wonder still live.

Now that #IronGraySea is finished (and believe me I wanna see what happens next in the #Destroyermen series!!!) it’s time to jump back in to #RobertJordan’s #WheelOfTime series with #book8 #ThePathOfDaggers. Serious developments happened in the last book #ACrownOfSwords and they were mainly long needed character developments. Can’t wait to see where things go this time. I will say the climax fight at the end was lacking in excitement, though I imagine things will ramp up in this #book. . I did run into a bit of a problem. I love this series so much I’ve begun hunting down the #hardcovers. The #paperback on the left was purchased at @halfpricebooks and that’s originally how I planned to read this series. The hardcover on the right I found at @mysapl’s @bookcellarsa. I hope to track down the others. . #CurrentlyReading #TORFantasy #paperback #usedbook #RandAlThor #TheDragonReborn #bookstagram #fantasy #bookworm (at San Antonio, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqTrCd8nc9J/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1s3y48qba8zjy

The IRL Doom Whomper (25mm musket), being fired. Uses a 1260 grain (82 gram) projectile. We don't know actual muzzle velocity, but considering the character who built it in the books is said to use it with maximum powder loads, and the barrel is rated for smokeless powder...

Hey, so, for anyone that cares, which I doubt any of you do, the next Baldy's Book Club isn't going to be on Destroyermen 2. I got wrapped up in reading something else, and... whoopsie I guess?
So, instead we'll be reading 'John Dies at the End' by David Wong.
