INSIDE THE SOTHEBY’S PLATINUM JUBILEE TIARA EXHIBITION
07.31.2022 by THE COURTJEWELLER
Earlier this summer, Sotheby’s in London mounted a truly special exhibition of tiaras, featuring royal and aristocratic pieces alongside more modern examples. Several of our lucky readers were able to visit the exhibition and see the tiaras in person, and today, I’m honored to share some photos taken by our lovely reader Phyllis!
Tumblr media
Phyllis has generously shared a selection of her photographs, plus some of her observations about the exhibition. She notes that the presentation techniques used by Sotheby’s to present some of the diadems was truly ingenious: “The tiaras are either in cases where you can walk around 360 degrees and see them from all sides or are along the walls in niche cases. The tiaras in the niche cases actually float up and down and also spin, I spoke with a Sotheby’s employee about this and evidently the wall niches, which are actually secure vaults, use a patented technology to suspend and spin the tiaras. There are no strings! I think it must use air pressure changes to do this….it’s really cool.”
Here are two interesting tiaras are paired in a single case. The top sparkler is the Westminster Halo Tiara, made by Lacloche in 1930 for Loelia Ponsonby, the third wife of the 2nd Duke of Westminster. Sotheby’s notes that the tiara was designed “as a halo to be worn over the crown of the wearer’s head and extending outwards in the manner of a traditional Chinese headdress,” adding that it was “originally set with the Hastings and Arcot diamonds, now replaced with smaller diamonds, [and] flowers.
The second, smaller tiara in the display is a simpler silver bandeau-style tiara that dates to ca. 1920. Sotheby’s describes the jewel as “as an openwork bandeau of foliage and flowers, set at the centre with a cabochon emerald and with circular-cut sapphires and pink sapphire within the centres of the flowers.
Tumblr media
One of the most famous tiaras displayed in the exhibition was the Spencer Tiara, which we discussed at length here on the site a few days ago. It was made in 1937 for the Countess Spencer using a set of nineteenth-century ornaments, and it was most famously worn by Diana, Princess of Wales. Sotheby’s calls the tiara “one of the most famous diadems in modern history.” (It’s tough to disagree with that statement!) Phyllis shared that “it was a real thrill” to see the tiara in person, and that it was a highlight, along with another very important royal jewel, Queen Victoria’s Emerald and Diamond Tiara.
Tumblr media
I really love the photo that Phyllis took of the Rosebery Tiara. Her image shows the intense sparkle of the diamonds so clearly! Made in France ca. 1878, this tiara was given as a wedding present to Hannah Rothschild, the richest women in Britain, by her new husband, the 5th Earl of Rosebery. Sotheby’s explains that the tiara is “comprised of ornate scrollwork and foliate detailing in a graduated sequence of crescents within which large collet stones are set and flanked by foliate scrolls issuing stylised lilies, with a band interspersed with square and lozenge stones, set throughout with diamonds.”
Phyllis explained that she “loved seeing these tiaras in 360 views because the frames and attachments are just as interesting as the front views.” She added, “Most of them have detachable brooches and/or can be worn as necklaces. The mechanics used vary quite a bit from one tiara to the next and all are utterly unique. Some brooch backs have pin back attachments like modern jewelry but the older ones have spikes and clips.
Tumblr media
Here are two more tiaras that shared a case in the exhibition. (It’s so fun to think through the reasons that the curators paired up certain sparklers, isn’t it?) The top tiara is a diamond waveform tiara made by Cartier in 1904. Sotheby’s describes it as “a wreath of twinned sprays of leaves, set throughout with brilliant-cut diamonds, with pendant larger diamonds to suggest flowers, detachable into four brooches, accompanied by brooch fittings.”
The lower tiara is also a Cartier creation. Made in the 1920s, it’s a bandeau-style tiara set with diamonds, amethysts, sapphires, and onyx. Sotheby’s explains that the tiara, which was made in the firm’s Paris atelier, has a “geometric openwork design, set throughout with circular-cut diamonds and three large faceted buff-top amethysts, with cabochon sapphire and onyx panel accents.” You can see this one sparkling in motion on the Sotheby’s website as well.
Tumblr media
I love this dramatic photograph of the Derby Tiara, made around 1890, likely by Skinner & Co. This tiara has a fraternal twin: the Devonshire Diadem, made by the same firm in 1893. The Derby is slightly smaller than the Devonshire; Sotheby’s notes that the Devonshire version “features 13 palmette motifs,” while the Derby “is smaller and bears 11 palmette motifs.” Though Sotheby’s attributes the construction of the tiara to Skinner, the piece resides in a fitted Carrington & Co. Case.
Placed below the Derby Tiara is an unusual, asymmetrical tiara made ca. 1820: the Fitzwilliam Tiara. Sotheby’s explains that this early example of nineteenth-century tiara design is in “naturalist taste, designed as a long spray of flowers, leaves and buds forming a half circle, the front surmounted by crossed leafy stems centred and flanked by flowers.” The tiara is “detachable to be used as earrings and a brooch, [and] set throughout with cushion-, pear-shaped and circular-cut diamonds, with a back chain for converting the tiara as a necklace.” It’s fascinating to see the “bones” of the tiara’s construction in Phyllis’s photo.
Tumblr media
Here's a tiara in one of the “floating” cases described by Phyllis. Sold in an auction at Sotheby’s in 2021, this golden diadem was made by Jacques-Ambroise Oliveras ca. 1805. By family tradition of the longtime owners, the Lascelles family, the tiara and its coordinating jewels belonged to Empress Joséphine of France, perhaps gifts from her sister-in-law, Caroline Bonaparte Murat. Sotheby’s has published a lengthy essay on the provenance of the tiara and its connection to Joséphine and Caroline.
Tumblr media
And finally, we’ve got another set of jewels that particularly intrigued Phyllis: a turquoise and diamond tiara and necklace made in the 1960s by Van Cleef & Arpels. Sotheby’s notes that turquoise jewels like this suite were inspired by designs from India. And Phyllis shares even more information with us: “Another thing I learned is that the turquoise tiara has never been worn, only the necklace has been worn and just one or two times. Gem quality turquoise is a soft stone that discolors easily from body contact, hence these turquoise pieces being rarely or never worn. The uprights on that tiara also are removable and can be attached to the necklace as pendants, I think at the ‘flower base’ motif.

VOGUE meets with sharpay evans to discuss her life and family!
interviewer : you're known as a triple threat. a singer, dancer, actress - what can't you do!
sharpay evans : yeah, it's definitely been amazing having the recognition for all my hard work ... but i can't cook. i literally almost burned down my kitchen once, fun fact.
interviewer : before we talk about your rise to fame, you lived in albuquerque, new mexico briefly. what was that like?
sharpay evans : i did. when i moved there when i was sixteen and was there till i graduated from high school.
interviewer : what made you end up in new mexico?
sharpay evans : my past really isn't super hidden. i was just hanging around the wrong crowds and getting into trouble in my early teens. everyone thought it would be best that i just get a break from the nepo scene so was sent to live with my uncle vincent, aunt charlotte and cousin tiara.
interview : you boomed into the spotlight at the age of eighteen with your debut album, the new classic, and became known as the pop princess. what was that like?
sharpay evans : you know, i grew up in this industry. my parents really guided me every step of the way once they knew i was serious about my career. i'm really appreciative of my fans and even being given that title is such an honor.
interviewer : speaking of your parents, you're the daughter of hollywood actress derby evans and musician and producer vance evans?
sharpay evans : does this count towards one of the questions?
interviewer : yes, i guess it does, haha. what was it like being raised by them?
Tumblr media
sharpay evans: my mother, oh my mother. she is an amazing human being and dealt with so much between me and ry. again, i caused a lot of trouble for her and she wore my trouble on her sleeves while still being a famous, well-known actress providing for us. growing up, she would take us to set with her and we'd be playing on the lot or in set school. if we were lucky, we were able to watch her scenes and i still remember being constantly fascinated by everything she did. if you didn't know, there's an indie film she did once where she had to have a kid casted and my mom advocated so hard to have me play her daughter because she knew i had the talent to be an actress even at such a young age. my mom has always believed in me. i won't lie about the fact we went through a rough patch during my teens and briefly after i broke up with my ex but i admire who that woman is every single day. i mean, there's a reason i wrote don't tell my mom on heartbreak/her and included one of her voicemails. if i ever have kids, i hope to be half as patient and loving as she is. i also just hope i don't have menaces like i was, haha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sharpay evans : now my father, he is the reason i developed such a passion for music. looking back, i was so in awe of his life touring and him making music in the studios. i don't know how but like my mom he just saw a natural talent in me. i mean, he was gone a decent amount growing up but that was his career and he did what he needed to do to provide for us and i think that also took a toll out of him especially once i started rebelling. i remember when i came back from new mexico essentially a new person he just held me for a really long time and cried. mind you, this is a rock singer who i don't even think i had seen him cry before that very moment. my dad struggled with his own demons for years because of the industry but never really talks about it even with me till this day. i think for us, we just have a mutual understanding that, no matter what, we're here to lean on one another for support and that at the end of the day we're family. he has guided me in so many ways in life and that memory is probably, if not, my favorite of ours. i know he is proud of me.
Tumblr media
interviewer : do you think there was anything they could have done differently?
sharpay evans : i think they did the best with what they were equipped to do. they were first time parents dealing with a kid who liked to party and you know... participate in not so great things. i struggled sharing my parents with the world as i got older and really was having a hard time understanding the nepo scene even though i grew up in it. my dad constantly was on tours or my mom was filming movies so the attention was diverted away from me and ry. i now know i should have probably just verbalized my problems rather than defaulting to some ... illegal activities. although i don't necessarily agree with some of the choices they made, i don't hold them at fault for it.
interviewer : at least you're honest! well first, i hope your twin brother, ryan, is doing great! how did he handle all of this?
Tumblr media
sharpay evans : he is actually! he's currently doing some acting gigs on broadway right now. if you didn't know, he is actually older than me by one minute. but to answer your question, he took everything pretty hard. he came with me to new mexico for about a year but i told him to go back home to california. he found me on the floor one time after a situation and rushed me to the emergency room. like i think i traumatized him and i still feel so bad about it till this day. he's my heart that's walking on the outside of my body and the fact i hurt him so bad was devastating. ryan genuinely means everything to me. he suffered together, cried together, laughed together. we talk every day and even now, not living in the same state as one another is literally so difficult. he's just such an amazing person who dealt and cleaned up so much of my mess. i genuinely love him more than life itself.
Tumblr media
interviewer : if we can back track to new mexico. you mentioned an uncle, aunt and cousin , what were they like?
sharpay evans : oh they're everything i hope to have in a relationship. my cousin well... lets just say i understand.
Tumblr media
sharpay evans : my uncle vincent, i don't know if you know, was a child actor way back when but he met my aunt at a relatively young age and from what i'm told, knew from the very moment he laid his eyes on her that was his soulmate. she was just a waitress in los angeles living paycheck to paycheck wanting nothing to do with the celebrity lifestyle. when they turned eighteen, they got married but she was wanting to leave california and without hesitation, he followed her anywhere and left his career. he's now a criminal defense lawyer and is actually really happy doing it. crazy enough, the second i got to his front step i rolled my eyes at him and he literally locked me outside in the rain for twenty minutes and i had to sit on the curb until my aunt came home from work realizing what he had done. he was a strict man with me but i think i needed that type of role in my life. he wanted me to have structure and rules to know that every action and decision i made had consequences. i guess that was the lawyer in him. my uncle vincent really is such an amazing man and i'm really lucky to have a role model like him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sharpay evans : my aunt charlotte, again she was just a waitress when first meeting my uncle but now is a transplant coordinator at a hospital. i have never in a million years met a more down to earth and genuine human being before. we weren't really raised around my aunt or uncle and it wasn't because of any bad blood but really because of time scheduling. i mean, it worked out because i built a relationship with everyone on my own accord but i can genuinely say that my aunt charlotte is like a second mother to me. there's also a reason why her voicemail is on heartbreak/her. she was concerned about my well-being just as much as my mother and not hearing from me was extremely concerning. she knew i was okay but still wanted to hear from me. it was actually my aunt who convinced me to try out for drama club, get into choir and re-enroll in dance classes while i was in high school just to keep out of trouble and keep me pre-occupied. she always had my best interest at heart and knew that i needed compassion along with compassion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sharpay evans : tiara is my younger cousin. she is relatively ... similar to me in my personality. i think that's why we tend to buttheads frequently. i get it - i took a lot of her parents attention away when i moved to new mexico. it was exactly the problem i was facing with my own parents and hollywood. we just ran into issues when she constantly was trying to sabotage my life and that's not me being dramatic. she literally tried to steal my role in my play on opening night. thankfully, i managed to put a stop to it and we talked it out but i think when i left she was just excited to finally have her house back and be considered a single child again. i love her, i really do and i want her to have the best life possible but i hope she grows into herself just like i did at some point.
Tumblr media
interviewer : wow. it seems like new mexico really helped you, huh?
sharpay evans : honestly, i think i'll always have a deep appreciation for my aunt, uncle and even cousin. they molded me into who i am today. without them, i can genuinely say i don't think i'd be even here doing seventy - three questions with vogue.
interviewer : and what's it like being in the spotlight now compared to then?
sharpay evans : i wasn't prepared back then. i was literally a kid and the tabloids were absolutely ruthless towards me. i had no business being in the spotlight when i barely was in any projects and hadn't even released any music yet. thankfully, now, i have such an amazing support system between my mom, dad, ryan, my uncle vincent, aunt charlotte and even tiara and my pr team. everyone's primary goal is making sure not only myself but my image stays protected and safe. i feel so much more confident now being in the celebrity spotlight between making music and acting compared to back then.
interviewer : well, thank you so much for sharing yourself, your family and your house with vogue. is there anything else you want to share?
sharpay evans : yeah, stay tuned for my next album! now get out!

This is the Derby Tiara. Its exact origin isn’t known, but it is believed to have been made by Skinner & Co. circa 1890. It bears a classically regal silhouette and an abstract foliate motif of lotus flowers and buds depicted in luscious old cut diamonds. thots abt fleets friends (my ocs his friends :))
these guys
Tumblr media Tumblr media
idk why i wrote bebe as 15 i want her to be 14 again. anyway. shes kind of judgemental and rude but only as is the middle schooler's instinct. she's highly competitive and proud of her abilities and she tries Every skate sport she can. she likes rollerskating best but she also does bike tricks and takes fleet's board from him to show him how it's REALLY done. her favorite movie is probably the disney channel original motocrossed and the second she discovers roller derby she's going to do that Forever. she would also love paintball now I'm just listing painful competitive play and anything where you can Win and also Get Hurt are things she likes. again, her instinct is to be competitive and rude but if she has A Second Longer to think she's very friendly :) her friends being upset makes her Distraught and she will Immediately try to fix whatever the problem is.
tiara's their funny little baby friend. she's adventurous and competitive like bebe but really not good at handling pain and failure. she doesn't get to hang out with the rest of them very much bc her parents are pretty overbearing but they always clap and cheer when she shows up at the park. dog and bebe have babysat her before (man your parents still want you to have a babysitter? how old are you?? lame...).
ive talked abt dog and his deal before. i like him :) hes just very chill with everything, just takes things as they come, tries to be nice and mind his business. his nan kind of sucks but handles it by not caring too much. he and bebe go to the same school but don't have any classes together so she isn't able to keep track of how often and what classes he skips, which is frequently and most of them. fleet also doesnt keep track but he could pretty accurately if he wanted to, bc dog usually spends that time hanging out with him lol
calvin and basil don't get very many thoughts in my mind. basil is skate shop worker who organizes and supervises the kids. he's patient and nice :) calvin doesnt want to talk to anyone he doesn't already know. he's quiet and standoffish. he's mostly just friends with basil but he helps out with the other teens sometimes.he takes safety seriously and for that reason is frequently annoyed by fleet. theyre still friends though, just not very close.

Countess of Derby’s Tiara

Note
I wish I could witness the gossip of the time that Duchess of Devonshire went to get a tiara made that's basically the same as Countess of Derby's but *bigger*
Haha, it wasn't quite as interesting or scandalous as that because the original owners of the tiaras were mother and daughter. Louisa was first married to the Duke of Manchester then after he passed away she married the Duke of Devonshire. Her version of the tiara was made by Skinner & Co. in 1893, the year after her second marriage. She was know as the Double Duchess and is most memorable to me at least as the hostess of the famous Devonshire House Ball.
A couple of years before that in 1889, Louisa's youngest daughter, Alice, married the Earl of Derby. The Derby version is just attributed to Skinner meaning they don't have proof but because of how similar it is to the Devonshire tiara they're almost positive that it was made by them. It's also not known which tiara was made first because there's no recorded date for the Derby tiara and it's usually labelled as circa 1890. It could have been made before the Devonshire one because Alice got married in 1889 which would have been a likely occasion to receive a tiara or it could have been made after just because she wanted a new tiara and choose one like her mother's.
There are some differences between the two tiaras like the bottom band and the leaves around the lotus flowers along with the Devonshire one being bigger and more solid.

~Devonshire Palm and Lotus Tiara~
Tumblr media
This extravagant diamond tiara was made for the Louise Duchess of Devonshire, the year after her marriage to the 8th Duke in 1893 when she was 61 yers old.
Louise was seen as a leader of fashion and society within her era, holding many balls at Devonshire House and was especially well known for the magnificent jewellery that she wore.
The tiara shown has a row of 13 scrolled palmettes (a fan-like shape of leaves on a palm tree), alternating with a lotus pattern. The upper section was made around 1893 and was set throughout with cushion-shaped diamonds. The base has a row of lozenge motifs set between two lines of more cushion shaped diamonds and dates from around 1897. It is mounted in silver and gold.
In order to make the tiara, the 8th Duke of Devonshire removed the diamonds in the Devonshire Parure and other heirlooms, such as the 6th Duke's Garter Star. These totalled 1,041 diamonds, to which Skinner added another 840. However, the piece was only pictured on the Duchess for a bunch of rare occasions.
Tumblr media
The Tiara was also worn by Evelyn, Duchess of Devonshire at the 1911 Coronation of King George V, when she was Mistress of the Robes to Queen Mary, as well as the Coronation of King George VI in 1937. She also wore it for official portraits and galas during her husband’s tenure as Governor General of Canada.
Tumblr media
In 1953, at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the Palmette tiara was seen on Mary, Dowager Duchess of Devonshire (daughter-in-law of Evelyn), who was known as the Mistress of the Robes to Queen Elizabeth II. She also wore the tiara in a portrait by Cecil Beaton, to State Openings of Parliament in the 1950 and the 1960s, as well as on State Visits to Sweden and The Netherlands, usually with her Opal Necklace (which could also be worn as a Tiara). Mary, Duchess of Devonshire continued to wear the tiara until she retired as Mistress of the Robes in 1965.

Was that [GAVIN CASALENGO?]? Oh no no, that was just [RYAN EVANS], a [CANON CHARACTER] from [HSM]. They are [TWENTY-ONE] years old, use [HE/HIM], and [ARE] aware that they are not actually from Washington DC. Too bad they can’t stray from this city for long.
Tumblr media
Ryan and his sister, Sharpay, are the children of Vance and Derby Evans, Ryan is about eight minutes younger than Sharpay, and were the stars of seventeen school productions. Ryan played Little League baseball in Rhode Island before he moved to Albuquerque.
His 1st appearance was in the original High School Musical on January 20, 2006, and his 2nd appearance was on August 17, 2007 in High School Musical 2. His 3rd and final appearance was on October 24, 2008 in High School Musical 3: Senior Year.
He was chosen by Julliard School to take their scholarship because of his choreography in the Senior Year Spring Musical.
Ryan has been in D.C. for two months now.
Unlike his sister Sharpay, who likes to be selfish and cruel to the Triston, Gabriella, and their friends, Ryan seems to be more nice and caring to them. He only acts mean when his sister wants him to. This also proves why he has more friends than his sister and even considers her a frenemy. In the first film, it was hinted that Ryan was ditzy and unintelligent, but as the series progresses he seems to be a lot smarter and has common sense. He knows how to choreograph and is really good at baseball.
Ryan cannot put together the letters on the basketball team's shirts spelling "Go Drama Club!", indicating that he may have dyslexia. Ryan's intelligence becomes more pronounced as the series progresses. He is able to choreograph two shows by his own means, and in a deleted clip from the third film even hints at Tiara's deceit by saying her name "sounds like a stage name". His role as Sharpay's sidekick is obviously meant to undermine his true intelligence. In the second and third films, we find that it is not Ryan, but Jason that is the true ditz.

1975-Ruffian
Tumblr media
Ruffian (April 17, 1972 – July 7, 1975) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won ten consecutive races, including the Acorn, Mother Goose and Coaching Club American Oaks, then known as the American Triple Tiara. She was in the lead at every point of call in every race she ever ran and set new stakes records in each of the eight stakes races she won. Her dominating wins caused her to be named the American Champion filly at both ages two and three. In July 1975, she entered a highly anticipated match race with Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure, in which she broke down. Surgery was attempted but Ruffian reacted poorly and exacerbated the injuries while coming out of anesthesia. As a result, she was euthanized.
Ruffian was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1976. The Blood-Horse magazine ranked her as the top filly or mare of the twentieth century in their list of the top 100 American racehorses of the 20th century, and number 35 overall. Her story was told in the 2007 film Ruffian and numerous books.
