Gale's Academy Days — bonus content from What Friends Are For

In chapter 8 of What Friends Are For, we meet Tazaver Den, Gale's only friend from his Blackstaff days. Here's some bonus content from one of those days:

“Oi, Dekarios!”

Gale sighs, looking up from his book. He thought he’d be safe here, in Blackstaff’s smallest, most underground library. But they always found him in the end. 

The wizard pushes his long fringe out of his eyes and peers up at Raeth Roullo and his cohort of fellow idiots. “Hello, Raeth,” he says, warily.

Raeth is a human, like Gale, but with none of the young Dekarios’ poise or talent. Gale is pretty sure the oaf only got into the Academy thanks to a generous donation made by his wealthy merchant father. He is, Gale thinks, the human equivalent of beige. As though a turnip accidentally got in the way of a revivify scroll. 

“You’ve got a bit of cat hair on your face, Dekarios.” When Gale raises a self-conscious hand to his cheek, Raeth makes a show of peering more closely. “No, wait… it’s just your pathetic attempt at a beard.”

The dolt laughs like a drain at his own joke, his friends snickering behind him. As usual, Raeth is accompanied by what Gale likes to think of as his henchmen: the Dragonborn twins Thossus and Caissos. The muscle of the operation. Gale winces, thinking about the last time he’d talked his way into blows from those claws.

He’s surprised to see that Raeth has acquired another accomplice too. The new girl; Imra, the half-elf. Immie, she’d said to call her. She’s hanging back behind the boys, looking a bit uncomfortable and Gale internally rolls his eyes. 

It isn’t the first time a new student has been corralled into joining in with Raeth’s bullying, but Gale feels disappointed nonetheless. Imra had seemed kind when she first joined. Smart. They’d once passed an exceedingly pleasant afternoon chatting about Elminster’s Myth Drannan Amphigory. In truth, he’d developed a bit of a crush on her, found her white blonde hair and pointy ears intriguing. To see her hanging around with Raeth stings a little. 

“Talking of cats, how is your only friend, Deka?” Raeth hops up onto Gale’s desk, pushing his carefully organized books and notes all over the floor. 

“Tara is just fine, thank you for enquiring,” Gale stares at his hands. Normally he’d put up a bit more of a fight but he doesn’t feel like getting beaten up today. Not in front of Immie.

“Hells, Dekarios,” Raeth guffaws at Gale’s formality. “You’re such a weirdo. No wonder that cat’s the only pussy you’re getting.” Thos and Cais like that one, their rasping laughs echoing through the wooden bookshelves.

Gale bristles. “That’s what you think,” he mutters.

“What was that?” Raeth gives him a shove, his ruddy face delighted. “Do share with the class, Deka! Who exactly are you shagging??”

He knows it’s a bad idea. He knows they won’t believe him. But Gale can’t help himself. “Mystra, if you must know,” he spits, looking Raeth square in the face.

There’s a moment’s hesitation and then Raeth is falling about laughing, tears leaking from the corners of his scrunched-up eyes. “Oh my gods, oh my gods-” He clutches his sides in mock hysteria. “Did you lot hear that? Dekarios reckons he’s bedding… the goddess of magic.”

Thossus and Caissos are cracking up as well, staring at Gale as though he’s lost the plot. 

Gale’s face burns red. He knew he shouldn’t have said anything. Mystra had told him not to. He hopes she won’t be angry at him. It’s less than half a term until he gets out of this place, gets his own tower, can become an archmage worthy of her love. No one will be laughing at him then.

For now, though, their derision hurts. When Gale’s eyes flick to Immie, she’s biting her lip, looking at him with pity. To his shame, Gale feels his eyes start to prickle. 

“Shut up, Roullo,” he snarls through gritted teeth.

“Or what!?” Raeth is still recovering from his fit of laughter. “Gonna tell Mystra on me? Please do. Invite her to the dorm, why don’t you? If I’d known Our Lady was banging students, I’d have had a go myself!”

Gale feels the magic flare up in his hands before he’s even really had a chance to think it through. “Silence,” he growls, and Raeth’s eyes widen as he finds himself unable to speak. Thos and Cais step back, unnerved by Dekarios’ eyes, which are suddenly glowing purple. Caissos tries to utter an incantation but Gale counterspells it with a flick of his wrist, before levitating both Dragonborn up towards the ceiling over Imra’s head, the half-elf only just ducking in time. 

Raeth is putting his hands up in the air, mouthing something that looks like an apology, but Gale is beyond caring. His glowing eyes narrow and he’s about to start inflicting real damage when Tazaver Den appears at the door. 

“Gale…”

Gale’s head snaps round at the warning in his friend’s voice and he sags, concentration breaking, giving Raeth his voice back and sending the twins tumbling down onto the hard stone floor with unison grunts. The trio scarper, Roullo glancing back and mumbling: “Freak...”

With another weary sigh, Gale begins to pick up his things from the floor, Zav walking over to help. 

“Mate, it is nearly the end of last term, you cannot get expelled now.”

“I know, I know… it’s just sometimes they-” Gale bumps headfirst into Immie, who has also stooped to help him pick up his books. “Oh… thanks.”

“No worries,” she smiles shyly. “That was pretty impressive, Gale.”

Gale frowns. What is she doing? She’s probably been told by Raeth to flirt with him and set him up or something. 

“Yeah, well,” he huffs. “You can tell your friends there’s more where that came from if they want it.” He cringes a bit. Not his best line.

Immie frowns back. “They’re not my friends… I came here looking for you, actually…”

Likely story. “Of course you did, Immie. Look, tell Raeth I’m not going to fall for whatever it is he’s sent his little errand girl to do. As if I’d be interested anyway, with the goddess of magic waiting in my bed.”

The half-elf’s mouth falls open, then her eyes narrow. “You’re such an idiot, Dekarios.” She turns tail and stalks out of the library.

Ha. Hardly an idiot if I sussed you right out, Gale thinks smugly. When he looks up at Tazaver, his friend is shaking his head.

“She’s not wrong, Gale,” Zav tuts in disbelief. “You know, for the smartest person I’ve met, you really are an idiot.”

Btw I’m not going by the whole “colors determine ranking “, for context after SPD here Syd became blue and Z became green but are second in command since the main team is just them and Bridge, plus I don’t really like that structure. These new forms were obtained after those rank ups and are linked more to their inner selves hence the colors but that doesn’t determine ranking.

Sky and Jack are Dekarangers, Deka Ice and Deka Fire, stuff for later like upgrades since Sky is the commander due to Cruger retiring.

red is an absolute halloween fiend. he loves costuming and will spend way too much time putting it together. he loves the performance of walking around, even if its not something hes particularly good at, and his costumes tend to be extremely detailed and well crafted. also he tries to cram in as many halloween activities as he can into one day

nicoles largely apathetic to halloween, and just stays at home to hand out candy. shell watch horror movies if its on tv, but she doesnt really seek it out. nicole used to be a really big trick or treater but stopped once she hit 16. she kinda misses it tbh

jay watches horror movies with cyrus every year. its tradition for them, and shell eat as much candy as she can get her hands on. she doesnt really make or wear a costume, or go out beyond that.

kai doesnt usually do halloween, beyond parties hes been invited to. his costumes are somewhat generic, and kinda cobbled together out of whatevers in his closet. he has fun with the makeup though. kai also likes haunted houses, but doesnt go them too often

halloween is usually pretty busy for deka. he does drag, and he usually as a show happening on halloween. he also does shitty car racing and demo derbies, so those are usually happening back to back, which keeps him on his toes for the whole week, on top of whatever party hes been invited to

keerin is a trick or treater supervisor. they walk around with their neighbor and her kids, and mostly just hang out and chat. they dont really dress up, beyond whatever their friend makes them wear (usually a headband or something small-ish), and the highlight of their night is seeing what the kids are wearing
