Yep happened monday, not a problem you say, get a man out, you say except we are nearly out of gas and I want to switch supplier and pay for a bulk load in the summer. Its LPG so not mains and these companies try to keep you tied to them by reducing your direct debit and once a year refunding overpaid money. This results in a constant debt to them. MrP so far has been good but not sure how long it will last, we have an open fire and lots of low cost heaters about so should be good. #moneysavingtip! . Ok, joking aside, who else thinks stockings are a big money-spinner? . You want to stuff your kids’ Christmas stockings and so buy a few small bits. Only, because you’re trying to save money, the small bits only fill the toes. So you add some sweeties and some clementines/satsumas (as is the tradition), and it still looks crap, so you try to find something from the selection of “tree presents”, to add to said stocking and bulk it out. . Only, now, it doesn’t look like there’s enough under the tree. . STOP! You don’t need to go out and buy any more presents. . You have bought enough. . And to solve the stingy stocking problem, either do away with it, or make a stocking with your child out of an old adult boot sock, decorating it up for Christmas. . What are you saving for - decide what you want to save for, if its your first attempt or you have tried many times before and failed then pick something really important to you, emergency and sinking funds can come later. 2. How much do you need - decide the amount, don't go mad, saving thousands is great but not really easy or quick. If its your first time or you have tried before then you need to get a result in a reasonable space of time, say £/$150 in 30 days. 3. How long for - decide how long its going to be for, if its your first time or you have tried before then don't aim to save for this pot too long, 30 days is great, its long enough to get it to be a habit but quick enough for results. 4. Work out how much a day you need to save, if the amount is too high then you need adjust the no of days or the total amount. Say £/$150 over 30 days is £/$5 a day. 5. Recording it - get a little book to record it in, see pic, date every square for the length of the save. Seems lame but this is really important, it gives you such a sense of achievement to cross those suckers off. 6. Save - every day, this is so important, you move the amount every day from your current account to a designated savings account, after about two weeks your brain has learnt it as a habit. Savings and why an emergency fund wasn't my first goal MrsP's #moneymatters - yep you read right, for years I have struggled to save an emergency fund, that's what they tell you isn't it, priority is emergency fund, must have emergency fund, even the big guy DR says an EF in step 1. Well I could never do it, never manage it WHY!!! I realised my first priority was not an EF but a "MrP wants this fund". I had an epiphany and realised my whole life has been blighted by this lack of a slush fund just in case MrP want this or that (yes I know just say no I hear you say but there are reasons why that is not an option) So my first fund was a panic fund, a fund that enabled me to get him things without impacting other stuff.
