GENERAL MONEY-SAVING TIPS

Money is one of the essentials that we need in order for us to survive in this physical world. Having money will allow us to meet our basic needs every day such as food, shelter, and pay for healthcare. However, spending so much money will lead to negative effects. As an individual, it's essential for us to save our money and keep in mind about the amount of money we spend during the day, weeks, or even a month. Spending so much money will lead us to so much risk of having a huge debt. As individuals, we must be reminded about saving money for us to have an awareness of how we're going to handle our money. Moreover, these are the following do’s and don'ts that we can utilize in order for us to save money:

DO’s

1. Make a Budget.

Before spending money, it's really important for us to create a spreadsheet containing our income and expenses. Making a budget helps create financial stability. It's easier for us to pay bills on time, build an emergency fund, and save for major expenses. Overall, a budget puts a person on a stronger financial footing for both the day-to-day and the long term.

2. Keep track of your spending.

Create a list of your finances so you can see how much you have to spend each month. Include your income from student loans, scholarships and bursaries, any parental contributions, and part-time jobs, as well as regular outgoings such as your rent and mobile phone for you to track your expenses in an organized way.

3. Be a smart shopper.

As a shopper, you need to consider buying supermarket value products rather than well-known brands and shop at the end of the day when many items are discounted. Do a cost-effective 'big shop' at the start of each week and minimize the number of takeaways you have.

4. Differentiate your needs and wants.

knowing the difference between your needs and wants is a significant tip for you to save money. Having this idea will give awareness about the things you need to consider in buying things in your daily life. When we say "wants” these are things you want to have. On the other hand, “needs” are things you need to have.

5. Swap & Sell.

So if you're planning to buy something that you want or need, this is a great tip for you to achieve that without spending a huge amount of money. You can sell or swap old items that you don't need anymore in order for you to have it. Facebook Marketplace and BarterX are one of the great websites that you can utilize so that you can sell and swap your things.

DON’Ts

1. Don't buy impulsively.

Do not purchase for the wrong reason. Before you buy something, ask yourself whether you really need it or do you simply want it. Thinking about your previous impulse purchases that end up unused and taking more of your storage space might deter you from impulse buying. It is better to make a shopping list before you hit the stores to avoid buying more than you need.

2. Don't shop when upset or when you feel emotional.

Don’t let your emotions control your spending habits! If you are feeling sad or depressed, you might easily convince yourself that a trendy gadget or a pretty dress will make you feel better or look good. But there are many ways to ease stress. Try exercising, going for a walk, listening to music or having a drink with friends, but avoid spending money at all costs.

3. Don't forget to always track or list things your spending.

It doesn’t matter how large (or small) your income is—if you’re not tracking your spending, you’ll never be in control of your money. Always spend your money wisely!

4. Don’t use your savings without a plan.

If you have an emergency fund and you need it now, use it. But estimate the amount you need before withdrawing, and make notes on how you spend it.

5. Don’t use your emergency fund for unnecessary things.

Remember—your emergency fund is all about long-term security, not instant gratification. Don't use it on a whim. Emergency funds should be used to finance actual emergencies, such as periods of unemployment or sudden medical challenges. But also don't be afraid to use it when you really need to. Just be wise in spending your money.

To conclude, money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy security and safety for you and your loved ones. So, we must be reminded that saving money is a significant strategy that we need to apply in our daily lives as human beings. Saving money can assist us in navigating difficult situations, meeting liability, and accumulating wealth for our family. Yep happened monday, not a problem you say, get a man out, you say except we are nearly out of gas and I want to switch supplier and pay for a bulk load in the summer. Its LPG so not mains and these companies try to keep you tied to them by reducing your direct debit and once a year refunding overpaid money. This results in a constant debt to them. MrP so far has been good but not sure how long it will last, we have an open fire and lots of low cost heaters about so should be good. What are you saving for - decide what you want to save for, if its your first attempt or you have tried many times before and failed then pick something really important to you, emergency and sinking funds can come later. 2. How much do you need - decide the amount, don't go mad, saving thousands is great but not really easy or quick. If its your first time or you have tried before then you need to get a result in a reasonable space of time, say £/$150 in 30 days. 3. How long for - decide how long its going to be for, if its your first time or you have tried before then don't aim to save for this pot too long, 30 days is great, its long enough to get it to be a habit but quick enough for results. 4. Work out how much a day you need to save, if the amount is too high then you need adjust the no of days or the total amount. Say £/$150 over 30 days is £/$5 a day. 5. Recording it - get a little book to record it in, see pic, date every square for the length of the save. Seems lame but this is really important, it gives you such a sense of achievement to cross those suckers off. 6. Save - every day, this is so important, you move the amount every day from your current account to a designated savings account, after about two weeks your brain has learnt it as a habit.
