Finally doing a rewatch of the Death Note 2015 TV drama! I forgot how different some of it is, but honestly, I'm enjoying it so much!

I love the final confrontation scene in general (mostly because I love Near but also because Light in that scene both amuses me and destroys me emotionally) but I LOVE the bit in the 2015 J Drama (whats new?) Where Mikami tries to call Light God and Near, for the first time in the series, yells "HES NOT GOD". It's beautiful and impactful and lives in my head rent free

River Song returns from the dead
Alex Kingston stars in The Death and Life of River Song, a brand-new series of full-cast audio dramas, coming soon from Big Finish Productions.
Tumblr media
An archaeologist from the 52nd century, born and raised to be an assassin, destined to marry her intended target, and to have many of her own adventures too – Professor River Song’s very messy timeline began (or maybe ended) when she first appeared in the 2008 Doctor Who TV episode Silence in the Library.
Since then, Alex Kingston has reprised the role of River numerous times for Big Finish Productions, including in her own series, The Diary of River Song, which ran from 2015 to 2023. And, starting in August 2024, she will carry on the role in a brand-new series, The Death and Life of River Song.
The first box set in the series, Last Words, is written by Robert Valentine. It begins with River, after settling down to an afterlife in the Library’s computer core, finding herself waking up in Earth’s future, her consciousness having been temporarily transferred to a new body.
Alex Kingston said: “We have gone post-Library! We’ve done another episode in the past where I was within the database, which I loved, and I thought that’s the only way you could go forward with River, given her situation. So, I was actually really surprised when this box set came my way, and that we are now so far advanced in the history of Earth that she is able to be brought out as data and put into a cloned body. So very, very clever!”
Producer David Richardson added: “When every single day during the recording, your leading actress says “This script is brilliant”, you know you’re onto a good thing. Even better, at the end of the last day, Alex popped the script in her bag and announced that she loved Last Words so much she was taking it home to keep and treasure.”
The Death and Life of River Song: Last Words is now available for pre-order exclusively here, either as a collector’s edition four-CD box set, for £29.99, or as a digital download, for £22.99 per volume.
Big Finish listeners can also pre-order a bundle with Last Words as well as Volumes 2 and 3 of The Death and Life of River Song, which are both due for release in 2025, for just £80 (collector’s edition CDs + downloads) or £66 (downloads only).
All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.
Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mail-out of collector’s edition CDs may be delayed due to factors beyond our control, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

The wasted potential of Death Note’s women
Tumblr media
Spoilers for Death Note; the manga, the anime, the 2015 TV drama, the musical, and the 2017 Netflix movie.
In my opinion, Amane Misa from Death Note is without question one of the most wronged characters in the history of anime/manga.
Misa was never seen by her one and greatest love, series protagonist Light, as anything even resembling an equal at all—instead, she finds herself repeatedly as the butt of jokes and a ditzy contrast to make him seem much smarter. In the end, Misa became a mass murderer for Light, and didn’t even have the one thing she wanted—his love—to show for it. Light constantly insults Misa, and even cheats on her toward the end of the series. Throughout the series, Misa was profoundly wronged by the other characters, but even so, this isn’t quite what I mean. When I say, “Misa is one of the most wronged characters in the history of anime/manga,” I mean that Misa was wronged by Death Note author Ohba Tsugumi’s writing.
In the hands of a writer who isn’t so brazenly disinterested in writing them, the women of Death Note—Misa, especially—easily have the potential to be the most interesting characters in the deeply iconic series. But as it stands, they’ve been massively shortchanged by writing that presents plenty of fascinating story elements for them, but that never get explored. Good thing we have the stage musical and 2015 TV drama.

Autistic Anime Boys Side A Round 2 Match 7
Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Near -
"He's my favorite traumatized autistic character of all time!! I'm autistic and he's just like me frfr!!! Not ONLY does he have the most autistic swag (almost constant on-screen stimming, special interest in toys, menace to society, does not Know Or Care For social rules, my semi-verbal son) but he ALSO has trans swag (if you don't believe me look up his design in the 2020 one-shot or in the 2015 TV Drama) AND he's incredibly controversial amongst Allistic fans so I consider that an autistic win. Anyways, vote for Near or else you hate autistic trans ppl /j (ㅅ´ ˘ `)♡"
Mash -
"Mash has an extreme flat affect, his tone of voice barely changes no matter what happens and his facial expression never changes. That's not to say he doesn't feel emotions, he's just hard to read, but he does very much feel emotions. When he breaks a door because he doesn't know whether it's push or pull, he feels bad about it and offers to fix it. When he messes up, he plays cool until he realizes the consequences, and then panics. When he needs to fight someone, it's go time, and when he's fighting for a friend, he gets mad. He's dumb, but has a good heart, and his core motivation is to live in peace and happiness with his adoptive grandpa. Mash is a himbo: dumb, kind, and buff.
Mash has two Special Interests, and he's equally obsessed and knowledgeable about both: working out and cream puffs. He's so obsessed with working out that he sticks to a strict schedule of specific exercises throughout the day, even exercising in the middle of a conversation. He also drinks regular protein shakes and gave his individual muscles names, and he talks to his muscles and pretends they talk back to give himself a pep talk when he's feeling down.
As for cream puffs, they are his all-time favorite food and he is excellent at baking them (though terrible at making anything else). He always carries a cream puff around in his pocket (unsanitary!), and is constantly eating them, even in tense scenes. His cream puff being damaged is one of the few ways he'll express shock on his otherwise deadpan face. He loves cream puffs so much that taking one from him triggers an unconscious nerve reaction to take it back.
The following bits of propaganda are minor spoilers for Mashle:
It's later revealed that Mash's true dream in life is to become a patissier and run a pastry shop that sells cream puffs.
There's one scene near the end of the manga where he smiles, and it gave me intense feels in exactly the same way that Mob laughing at the end of Mob Psycho 100 does."

hi did you ever see the 2015 death note tv drama (the one with the horrible mello puppet)? it has some primo mikalight content so i thought of you
Hehehehehhehe
Okay so first of all...it makes me a bit happy that you thought of me about that🥺❤️
However, I have actually seen it😂
I don't really post about it much, but while I have a complicated relationship with that drama (specifically, I don't think it's a good adaptation and I have characterization gripes, but also I think every death note fan should watch it because it's great. I love it. I hate it. I love it) I actually love its primo Mikalight content (and a lot about how it handled Mikami)

I just finished the 2015 tv drama/jdrama of Death Note and oh my god that hurt. I especially love what they did with Light and his dad's relationship.
...and Matsuda, and the Lawlight, and the general downward spiral of Light. Everyone felt very human in a way that hurts.
They also included Mikami! Early! I was very glad to see my boy get screentime and be a major player. He got another, different ending from the anime and manga.
In other words I'm probably going to end up drawing something for it.

weekly round-up in media [29 jan-4 feb 2023]
~ sp*ilers for 609 Bedtime Story, A League of Nobleman, The New Employee, and Never Let Me Go ~
[listening]
Monsta X’s “The Dreaming” album - new discovery and I’ve had it on repeat
[reading]
Imago series by NR Walker - short and sweet adult contemporary mlm romance set in Australia; come for the romance, stay for the butterfly conservation and near-death experiences - reread
Pocketful of Soul by @jenroses - Mo Xuanyu-centric MDZS time travel fix-it and one of my 2022 favorites - reread
Dawn Will Break by ca_pierson and darkmoore - Stargate Atlantis AU - Written for the 2010 Big Bang, this is one of my favorites. A bare bones summary: After dying, John Sheppard dimension hops into multiple versions of himself to fix whatever is wrong there, at the behest of the Ancients. - reread
[watching]
609 Bedtime Story - Well that was a way to end it I guess. I did like how they resolved things with Mint, but I was hoping she’d figured out the connection between Mum and Dew. But that would mean talking about the parallel world again and they apparently decided that the entire conceit of the show didn’t matter anymore after ep 9. I’m so annoyed. (Edit: I just found out there is an alternate ending airing next week; most likely an ‘unhappy’ ending. What are you doing, show? I’m not even mad about it, just more confused.)
A League of Nobleman - The show I’m enjoying the most this week. I didn’t expect such gorgeous visuals in a historical mystery that isn’t a fantasy. There’ve been two mysteries so far and the second one involved a serial killer. I enjoyed the heck out of that arc. I have affectionately nicknamed Zhang Ping ‘Eyebrows’ in my head because those are some fantastic ones he’s sporting. Kudos to the makeup team.
The Lost Tomb (2015) - Binged most of season one last night and I’m hooked. This is amazing. Also, surprise Yang Yang! (I’d forgotten why it was on my watchlist, so he must be why.) The quality level is about late 90s/early 2000s but that was early fandom in my life, so nostalgia is hitting me hard. I’m having a great time with this one.
The New Employee - Seven episodes feels like a weird episode count for a series, but okay - I watched the last two episodes back to back and loved how they ended it. I do find it interesting however, that we never saw the ex/crush again after he was the trigger for the main relationship blip. It felt like they were going to take that further. I probably should have waited to binge this in one go, because I had completely forgotten that there was a manager who could cause trouble until he caused trouble. These short form dramas are generally pretty frustrating to watch because I can clearly see a longer (usually better) show around them. This one did feel complete, but I’m hoping they release a movie version.
[anticipating]
SHINee - Key’s album repackage is this month! Onew finished recording something! Minho is too tall! Taemin D-57!
[random notes from my tv journal]
609 Bedtime Story, ep 11 - “The kissing sounds don’t match the video?!” (This show botched the ending so bad, in multiple ways. This particular way made me laugh though.)
A League of Nobleman, ep 6 - “Surprise serial killer! Neat!”
My School President, ep 9 - “Gun and Tinn’s little scene on the beach while spying on Sound gave me major ‘future old married couple’ feelings.” (And now I want to read that future fic where Gun is home on break from touring and teasing his doctor husband into relaxing after a stressful shift.)
Never Let Me Go, ep 8 - “That was an extremely ominous music cue to tag the bathroom confrontation scene with.” (Up until that last moment it felt like any other scene in this show, but the music change elevated it and made it seem like Ben was going to come back and murder the kid. It threw me out of the scene it was such a jarring escalation. I may go back and watch it again, to see how it feels on rewatch.)

I was just rereading some notes I made last year on how I would rewrite the Death Note Netflix adaptation and then I just realized that a better version of it would just be the Death Note 2015 TV Drama, which Noteflix steals its entire concept of Light from except his actual race and nationality lmfao

have you watched the Japanese live action versions of death note?
heyyy yeah actually! i'm not a big fan of live actions in general, especially the death note versions if im being honest. i think they're silly and they capture L in a perfect way but with Light it seems so weird.
HOWEVER the 2015 japanese tv drama is amazing, it's spectacular, i love it so much. they flip flopped on me and got Light exactly right with L being a silly little male model looking mf played by kento yamazaki i love that one SO much. but they absolutely went insane with the live action movies and i want to wish bad luck onto anyone who worked on noteflix LMAO. The Last Name is dubbed by the anime's english va's so i love that one too but for my own gay reasons

Jenna Coleman on DVD/Blu-ray in North America (June 2022 edition)
Once in a while for the benefit of my fellow Jenna Coleman fans in North America, I’ll do a quick rundown of what TV shows or movies featuring our favourite actress are available in DVDs and Blu-rays - and what are not. In reverse chronological order (drama productions only). Spoiler break to respect timelines:
The Serpent (2021): Has been out on DVD in the UK for a while, but sadly it seems to be an example of a Netflix series that isn’t getting a physical release over here. Doesn’t bode well for her upcoming series, The Sandman though its predecessor American Gods was released to home media, so who knows. (The upcoming film Klokkenluider? Not even going to try and guess that one. The War Rooms hasn’t even started filming yet as far as we know.)
A Separate Peace (2020): This was an online play by Tom Stoppard Jenna did via Zoom mid-lockdown. A one-time shot, it’s unlikely to get any sort of re-release. I saw a copy of it kicking around Youtube for a while but no longer. A review with clips from it can be found here.
Inside No. 9 (2020): There’s been DVD release of Season 5 (including Jenna’s guest appearance) in the UK, but in North America the show isn’t well known so no release here as yet. When the recently announced American remake comes out, will it spark a Region 1 DVD or Blu-ray of the original?
Corporate Monster (2019): Filmed way back around 2010, but held for nearly a decade, it’s only been made available on Youtube. Sometimes short indie films turn up on DVD, though, especially if the director goes on to bigger and better things, so you never know.
Tumblr media
All My Sons (2019): The live stream of Jenna’s West End debut play (see above, with thanks to gifmaker @oswincoleman) was delayed until early 2020 for North American fans and unexpectedly got a streaming rebroadcast during lockdown. But National Theatre Live doesn’t tend to do DVD or Blu-ray releases, so don’t hold your breath to see this in any formal release.
Victoria (2016-19): All 3 seasons are available on DVD in North America (I’ve seen box sets of the combined seasons), but there’s no Blu-ray of S3 over here as far as I know. All are also available in the UK. The PBS edits (which include extra scenes in most regular episodes) have never been released, but may still be viewable online in the US on PBS’s website (which can’t be accessed from Canada so I can’t check).
The Cry (2018): DVD release in NA and the UK. Not overly common, but available. No Blu-ray though.
Thunderbirds Are Go (2017): Jenna did a guest voice for the first episode of Series 2 of the CGI remake series. It’s on DVD in the UK, but so far it’s only available on streaming here.
Me Before You (2016): Widely available in DVD and Blu-ray here. Sadly, I tend to see it in Wal-Mart $5 special bins these days.
Doctor Who (2012-2015; 2017): Widely available on DVD and Blu-ray. Twice Upon a Time was released on its own if you want her cameo. If you want her extra scenes as Clara (things like the Doctor Who Ultimate Guide minisode and her cameo in The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, you may need to invest in the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi box sets. Good luck finding her DW audio story “The Time Machine” on CD, but I think you can still order a download of it from places like Big Finish (her only other known audio book, The Secret Garden, is also a rarity on CD but I think Audible has it, along with a 2018 audio drama of A Christmas Carol in which she plays a role; it’s not on CD.
Death Comes to Pemberly (2013): Widely available on DVD and Blu-ray over here, though I think as with Victoria it’s the UK edit that we got in North America, not the PBS version which may or may note have extra scenes (I’ve never been able to verify).
Dancing on the Edge (2013): Again, widely available on DVD and Blu-ray here.
Room at the Top (2012): I won’t rehash the rights issues that delayed its broadcast for a year and make it unlikely to ever get a DVD or Blu-ray release anywhere, but you can stream it on both sides of the Atlantic.
Titanic (2012): Widely available on DVD and Blu-ray. Just don’t mistake it for that little home movie James Cameron made back in the 90s.
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011): It’s a Marvel movie - you can likely get it in 4K too (possibly the only Jenna release in that format). Just remember - she’s in two scenes but you might need the 4K version to see her in the second one.
Waterloo Road (2009): Jenna was a cast member for Series 5, which is on DVD in the UK. North American fans are able to watch her season on officially sanctioned YouTube uploads (still available but with the series revival I’d search for “Series 5″ specifically to skip recent uploads). DVD release has begun in North America by Acorn, but looks like only Series 1 so far.
Emmerdale (2005-09): Not a chance. You can find clips on Youtube but Jenna appeared in more than 400 episodes of the soap and the only soap opera I know of to be released in entirety on DVD was Dark Shadows.
