I love in the early seasons how sam and dean switch their perceptions of john. when sam is so pissed at him and finds every occasion to bring up how john wronged them and dean pushes back defending him, but then suddenly john dies. and he's sam's dad again. but now dean resents him. and it could be boring but it's not. because they both mourn in such different ways, and in both cases it serves their character.

and it's like they can never hate him at the same time. hating the father is something you take turns for, you can't hate him both at once because somebody needs to love him still

Some thoughts about this scene under the break...

There's so much to unpack in this episode. I love how the story progressively reveals clues that this djinn-induced fantasy is not an ideal wish world: John's death, references to Dean being an alcoholic cad, the spectre of the young woman imprisoned by the djinn, Dean and Sam's estrangement, and the deaths of all the people they had saved as hunters.

Dean's seeming alcoholism is a handy plot device to keep others from questioning his odd behavior. And, especially with JDM not guest starring, I understand that John's death is a convenient way to explain his absence, and the story would naturally move on to the other plot points. His death is downplayed since it's natural instead of supernatural.

But while there may have been practical reasons to tell the story this way, as a fan invested heavily in Dean and John's relationship, I do find Dean's (as scripted: "that's great" !!) reaction surprisingly unbothered. Given that till now we've seen Dean wanting the family to be together at all costs, it's interesting to me that here with his Mom alive and presiding over his safe and happy home, he doesn't seem to miss John being present at all, or worried that Mary is alone. It gives me a lot of headcanon fodder, especially since in later seasons they show that Mary and John's relationship was at times rocky. This world was formed by the wish of Dean's inner child, a desire for a time before he lost unconditional love and safety, and how fascinating to find that John isn't in it.

This exchange is NOT confined to men who are fathers in canon; characters who you want to see as a father, characters who are father figures, women who you think have “dad vibes”, etc are all acceptable, as long as the works created are focused on fathers or fatherhood in some way.

2) Be respectful of all other participants. If there are any issues, please contact me through the exchange Tumblr account or DM me on Discord and we will work together to solve it.

3) Respect Do Not Wants (DNWs) and use common sense – if someone requests fluff and doesn’t DNW torture, they probably still don’t want torture unless otherwise requested. 

4) Your work must focus on fathers or fatherhood in some way (this rule is up to interpretation, as long as you create something your giftee will be happy with). 

5) To request an extension, contact me on the exchange's Tumblr account or DM me on Discord. Include your Ao3 handle and how long of an extension you need. You don't need to give a reason or explanation, just a heads-up so that I don't give your assignment to someone else.

7) If you for some reason cannot complete your work, hit the "Default" button next to your assignment in your Ao3 "Assignments" page. No reason or explanation is necessary, but please do this sooner rather than later if you are sure that you will not be able to complete your creation.

The most realistic thing about Supernatural is how Sam and Dean put everything into finding their dad but once he was found (01×20), Sam and John were immediately at each other's throats. That's the most realistic family representation I've ever seen.

I dream about Dad all the time.  It's usually the same one, too.  We're all in the car.  I'm sitting in the driver's seat, dad's sitting shotgun.  But there aren't any shotguns.  There's no monsters.  There's no hunting.  There's none of that.  It's just . . . is so very insane to me that john KNOWS what he did wrong. at the start, at least, he knows the kind of father he’s become, he knows that he has no right to do the things he’d doing. and then he just. keeps doing it!!

everybody makes such a big deal about dean making the demon deal for sam, how much he must love him to sign up for an eternity of torture for him, how he can’t live without sam, and that’s all well and good. but where’s that energy when it comes to john huh? everybody writing all these thinkpieces about how john never really cared for dean or whatever. did you see his fucking smile when he came into the hospital room and saw that dean was awake? did you think about how he was preparing for the deal almost immediately after he gained consciousness and got updated on dean’s condition? did you think about him sitting by his dying son’s bed regretting all the bad times, wishing he would’ve given him more? did you think about how he was fully prepared to give up their only shot at killing yed, the mission that supposedly came before everything, to save his life? did you think about how he didn’t hesitate to condemn himself for dean? did you even think about how dean’s the last thing he saw before going to hell and the last thing he saw before going to heaven? and how there was no regret in his eyes either time about what he sacrificed for him? john winchester loved that kid more than anything in the world and you cannot convince me otherwise.
