RAAAAH IM GONNA HAVE THIS BRAINROT FOR SO LONG LMFAOO IM GONNA KEEP COMING IN UR INBOX TO SCREAM AT U ABT THIS
HA I'm glad you had fun!!!
DotF was entirely motivated by entertainment. My favorite things to read are mysteries, plot twists, and action and when I was planning DotF the only question I asked myself was: "what is the coolest possible thing that can happen next?" Sometimes that cool thing was a stupid joke and sometimes that cool thing was a gut punch haha.
Thank you 💖💖💖

Fic Rec List
AO3 is holding a Feedback Fest for International Fanworks Day! So, in no particular order, here are 10 fics from my bookmarks that I recommend. :) Most of these fics are by stellar authors, but the list is for individual fics. I recommend checking out the authors as well.
EDIT: fandom code. LU = Linked Universe. FS = Four Swords
Dawn of the Fourth by @lazuliquetzal - (LU, complete) A fic that's on plenty of rec lists, I'm sure! The mastery of plot, character, and language itself is top-tier. This has a mystery-ish plot filled with twists and turns that hold up very very well on rereads! The tension remains taut the whole time, but it isn't too stressful. There are some particular images from this one that have stuck with me since I read it.
Threats and Theatrics by htruona - (LU, complete) This one makes me laugh. A lot. Vio is too dramatic for his own good, and I adore the idea that they might just keep fake blood on them for stuff like this.
A Guide to Living (Again) by @cerame (LU, complete) - Also one that I'm sure is not unfamiliar to a lot of people! It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Shadow, and it was so so much fun to see these other opposite-Links coming around, too. This is just overall a very good time.
Awake, Sweet Prince by @vagueandominousvibes - (FS, complete) There's a lot by Kahl I adore, she's an excellent writer with a wonderful handle on world and words, and this one in particular is one of my favorites. I love slightly spooky fae and this is definitely high on my list.
Count to Nine by @tess-aka-fishy (LU, complete) - One of my top fluff and humor fics. Everyone is in-character in the best way possible, being chaotic but not necessarily on purpose. It's awesome.
It's Dangerous to Go Alone by @hey-adora (FS, complete) - Among the many standout works by Sam, this one is an excellent one to recommend thanks to the showcase of her particular brand of humor, the fun, adventure-y plot, canon-extension worldbuilding, and of course the focus on Vio and Shadow being awful as always.
Keep Your Face to the Sun by Ageofavalon (LU, complete) - This one is a wonderful little fic with, surprise surprise, a focus on Shadow. This one just feels cozy, and I've reread it a lot. I particularly enjoy the way that they adopt him into the LU Chain :)
Take a Number, Any Number by @cluelessmoose (LU, complete) - An outstanding Four whump fic that recently got a very satisfying second chapter. It uses a lot of my favorite whump tropes. The imagery and particular use of words makes this a delight to read.
Soft Glows by @youmixxx (FS, incomplete) - Breaking my hesitant rule of "only complete fics allowed" to rec this fantastic Green/Blue modern college AU story. The attention to detail in this fic is unbelievable—and I mean detail in-text in descriptions and narrative, as well as behind-the-scenes details like consistent schedules. It's beautiful. Don't let the word count intimidate you because it flies by in a haze of glory.
Draw a Circle Around Your Grief by @lattewritesthings (LU, complete) - Dramatic, horrific, bitter, hurt-no-comfort—BUT in a way that doesn't leave you hanging on a thread. It's tragic but the resolution is satisfying anyway. The images are striking and the emotions are potent.

I’m currently farming light dragon parts (sorry Zelda) and decided to do a follow up to my last post while I wait.
This list is all Linked Universe baby. Once again, if you know the blogs of some of these authors I’d appreciate it if you could tag them.
1. Linked Universe Age Swap AU by LazuliQuetzal
Let’s kick this off with a bang. This is a series of one shots centered around the Chain being alternate ages. We got Old Man Hyrule. We got Angsty Teen Time. We got Wolfkin Wild. It’s great. Check it out.
2. Dawn of the Fourth by LazuliQuetzal
By the same author, Dawn of the Fourth is one of those fics that I don’t think I’ll be able to do justice, so here’s a snippet:
Wild reached out and brushed a finger across the body’s cheek. Then he licked his finger. “Eleven,” he decided, smacking his lips.
“Hey, what the fuck.”
“Dirt tastes different depending on age—”
“No, don’t explain it! Why are you like this, I hate you so much—“
3. The Man and the Pup by Bubbly_Kandy
Once upon a time, in the magical land of Hyrule, there were eight boys and a man all trying to exist in a world that doesn’t want them.
This one has some serious fairy tale vibes which I love. It’s also kind of dark at times. It’s not finished but maybe if I point enough people towards it the author will pick it up again. Who knows? One can dream.
4. Deserving by @a-little-bit-of-ravioli
When Colin overhears part of a conversation between his father and his adopted big brother, he decides it’s up to him and his friends to protect Link from those wishing to do him harm.
5. Malevolence by @thescrapwitch
Wolfie eats something he shouldn’t and things go downhill from there. Secrets are revealed, friendships are tested, and Ganon is a jerk.
This fic is a masterclass in tension. If you need some heavy angst with a happy ending, this is your fic.
The one shot Wolf Heart by the same author is also very good.
6. Our Nightly Confident by Wisetypewriter
Alternative titles are “Wolfie is the Best Boy” and “Men Will Literally Talk to a Wolf Before Going to Therapy.”
This was one of the first LU fics I read and it’s so sweet. If you’ve liked Lupis Vigilans (coming up) you’ll really like Our Nightly Confident.
7. The Fierce Dadity Series by @skyloftian-nutcase
A series focusing on everyone’s favorite Mask-bound God/Spirit just trying to take care of his favorite mortal.
There’s a lot of fics by Skye that I love and it’s hard to narrow it down. But Fierce Dadity is up there.
8. Brethren in a Cradle by @skyward-floored
After coming across a village raised to the ground, the Chain finds its sole survivor: a baby boy. They quickly learn that there is more to this child than meets the eye.
The “Baby Joins the Chain AU”. Also I always get Skyward_floored and Skyloftian-nutcase mixed up and I would like to make a formal apology.
9. Where Your Meant to Be by @adrift-in-thyme
Malon has lived her entire life in her tower, never seeing the outside world. When a former-hero-turned-thief climbs through her window, her life takes a whole new turn.
The Tangled AU I didn’t know I wanted until I read it.
10. Lupus Vigilans by @pluviatrix
A character study of each of the Chain told from the point of view of Twilight, Hillbilly in Resident.
Wholesome and hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure, I can’t recommend this fic enough. Also, I’m from the Ozarks and it’s cool to see that accent represented in the wild.
Their other fic, And Still The Cradle Blossoms is also really good if you’re like me and need a good cry at three in the morning.
11. Down by @musashi
When the Chain gets hit by a horrible illness, it’s up to Sky to take care of eight stubborn heroes. Each chapter is focused on a different member, and Twilight’s chapter in particular hit me in the feels.
I love sickfics for some reason and this one is so good.
12. Colors by HylianHarmony
A Four centric fic where he reveals the Colors to the rest of the Chain. Also he has a mind palace which is pretty neat.
This fic isn’t finished but it’s too good not to recommend.
13. Alone Together by Blueskullcandy
Another Four centric fic but told from the point of view of different members of the chain (including Four). The Twilight chapter in particular is worth the read by itself.
This fic is also not finished but I still recommend it. It’s really good.
14. Brothers Becoming by @turtleduckscribbles
After a fight with Twilight, Legend is forced to face his fears and insecurities and confront the one person he wants to avoid at all cost.
Prickly Legend learns to let others in.
15. Not Like You by HylianHarmony
Wind deals with serious imposter syndrome, but the others don’t realize it until it’s almost too late.
This is one of my comfort fics y’all. When I’m down I’ll read it and it always manages to cheer me up. I can’t recommend this one enough.

the first full piece i wrote (finished jan 23) for my oc story, shanhai lu! it's only 6 pages. rest of it is below the cut ^_^
Dawn broke through the shuttered windows, the sun’s golden rays searching for any available dark nook and cranny. All was still and quiet in the house, but not for long. Presently, both of the current young masters of the house had risen and begun their early morning routines. Yue Qinglan combed and tied his hair, got dressed, and took a sip of water from a cup he kept at his bedside, all in an unhurried manner. Then, he made his way to the kitchen to brew a pot of morning tea.
Despite getting up at the same time as Yue Qinglan, Wang Yuanfei took considerably longer with his morning routine. After rising, he walked to his vanity mirror, sat down, and began fixing his hair. In the mornings, Wang Yuanfei’s hair was a dishevelled bird’s nest from sleep; it always took him at least half an hour to detangle it, then carefully make sure it lay just right. After grooming his hair, he opened a drawer underneath the vanity mirror, which contained multiple rows of various hair ornaments. He selected a set of four golden hair pins, the ends of which were carved in the shape of auspicious clouds. From the ends of the bottommost hair pins dangled a chain, and at the end of the chains was a bell and white tassel. Carefully, he slid the hair pins into his hair. Once satisfied, he began applying his makeup: red-orange eyeshadow around the lower edges of his eyes, and a false mole dotted on using special water-resistant ink. Wang Yuanfei tilted his head this way and that, admiring and checking his face from different angles. Pleased with his work, he smiled at himself, then rose and went to his wardrobe. This wardrobe was magnificent, large, and opulent; made of mahogany wood and inlaid with mother-of-pearl in the shape of plum flowers, it could be considered a valuable work of art. Wang Yuanfei nonchalantly tossed open the door. In the wardrobe were numerous, almost countless sets of robes. Most were various shades of red with gold-thread embroidered designs, but a few were orange. He took his time carefully considering his options before selecting a set of vibrant, deep red robes with a phoenix embroidered on the back in gold thread. Once dressed, he added the final touches: a white jade ring in the shape of a dragon on his right third finger, and a white jade ring with a swallow resting on it on the left fourth finger. With his outfit fully assembled, he was ready to leave; just before finally exiting his room, he grabbed his sword from where it lay under his pillow.
The gentle, fragrant scent of fresh tea floated its way through the house. In the kitchen, Yue Qinglan was already hard at work preparing breakfast. Light and simple fare was Yue Qinglan’s preferred kind of food, and today breakfast consisted of century egg and pork congee. A bowl and a pair of chopsticks had already been set out for Wang Yuanfei.
“Good morning, A-Fei. Breakfast is ready,” said Yue Qinglan, gesturing toward the table.
“Diligent as always, A-Lan,” Wang Yuanfei replied cheerfully. He sat down at the table.
Yue Qinglan hummed in response. He finished washing the dishes, got himself a bowl and chopsticks, then sat down at the table to eat. The congee was delicious; while light, it had just the right amount of flavour. Additionally, the eggs and pork were excellently tender. A comfortable silence settled in the room as the pair ate. Soon, they were both finished; Yue Qinglan got up and collected the dirty dishes. With a snap of his fingers, the dishes were cleaned. Then, Yue Qinglan darted out of the dining room, returning with a large stack of papers. He let the stack drop to the table with a soft thump. This stack of papers was the myriad inquiries and requests sent in by people plagued with certain supernatural troubles. These supernatural troubles ranged from a simple exorcism to troublesome yao that needed to be slain. Every morning, Yue Qinglan and Wang Yuanfei looked through the tower of papers for any noteworthy cases. Most of the time, the cases they took on were quite easily dealt with.
Wang Yuanfei boredly rifled through the stack. “Does it ever end?” he sighed.
“Every case is important,” answered Yue Qinglan. “Small nuisances will eventually build up to become large dilemmas if left unattended. Besides, we usually knock out all of the day’s cases well before dinner.”
Wang Yuanfei sighed again. He was about to start sifting through the stack in earnest when a certain paper caught his eye. The calligraphy was well-practiced and elegant; it was likely penned by someone from a scholarly or affluent family. “Hey, A-Lan, this one looks quite promising.”
Yue Qinglan clicked his tongue in mock exasperation. “You didn’t even look at it properly.”
“I do not need to; a single glance is all I need to determine whether or not a case is worth my time. Even if it proved to have the slightest difficulty, there is nothing we cannot handle.”
While Yue Qinglan appreciated his partner’s vote of confidence, it was still wise to properly read the case overview. Wang Yuanfei likely chose this paper because the elegant calligraphy suggested a client with means. To him, the price offered by the client was most important; all other details became secondary. In fact, the more dangerous it was, the better, for that meant greater compensation. The case that they were presently reviewing certainly seemed to fit this criteria. A nine-tailed fox had recently appeared in the city of Menghai, resulting in the deaths of multiple people; it seemed that this fox killed any prey it could get its claws on. It was even powerful enough to have devoured other cultivators who had travelled to the city intending to slay it.
This was the first major foe the pair had encountered in several months. They spent the rest of the day making the proper preparations: hundreds of hand-written yellow paper talismans with different uses; cinnabar and brushes; blank scrolls for note-taking; and lastly, plenty of small snacks for the road. Wang Yuanfei took care to sharpen his sword, Ruihan, while Yue Qinglan tuned his guzheng, Xianyun. At dawn, the pair set out on horseback toward Menghai. The city was not far from their current base; Yue Qinglan estimated that it would only take a day’s ride to reach their destination. Normally, Wang Yuanfei objected to such slow and mundane means of transportation; he preferred making a grand entrance, but Yue Qinglan had wanted to stay cautious. After all, this nine-tailed fox had not bothered to hide itself and had no qualms about demonstrating its power; it was best to keep the element of surprise and even trick the fox into underestimating them. In the meanwhile, the pair whiled away the time by chatting.
“I despise travelling this way,” Wang Yuanfei groused. “It is inconvenient, time-consuming, and exhausting. At the very least, we do not have long until we reach Menghai.”
“I know, I know,” replied Yue Qinglan gently. “When we go home, we can travel the way you like.”
“Mm. I expect that this will be over quickly.” Then, Wang Yuanfei perked up. “Ah, at long last, we have finally reached Menghai.”
Little buildings had started to appear on the horizon. As the pair drew closer, the buildings increased in size and number, until they finally reached the city gates; impressively tall and vibrantly red, they commanded an almost dominating presence. Menghai was a wealthy city built close to sea, and as such was famous for its trade and commerce. Sailors, merchants, carts, and livestock bustled throughout the city streets. Shouts from street vendors and shops rang through the air.
“So, who are we meeting this time?” Wang Yuanfei asked. “Nobody dull, I hope.”
“Just the local magistrate,” answered Yue Qinglan. “You would know this if you bothered to read the case file,” he continued pointedly.
“Ah, but A-Lan, where’s the fun in that? Be a little more spontaneous. Of course, I already knew who we were meeting; nothing escapes me. Come, let us make haste.” With that, he urged his horse into a gallop, smoothly cutting through the tide of people and carts, leaving Yue Qinglan behind.
Yue Qinglan smiled and shook his head. Gently, he guided the horse to walk slowly to where Wang Yuanfei had stopped at the end of the street. By now, the pair had attracted countless stares, and some people were whispering among themselves. Yue Qinglan was long used to Wang Yuanfei drawing attention like this–an occupational hazard as a result of being Wang Yuanfei’s partner–but he was still uncomfortable with being scrutinized like this. Wang Yuanfei, however, did not seem to care at all. The stares, the chattering, and the pointing slid off him like water off a duck’s back. Wang Yuanfei smiled apologetically at Yue Qinglan, who only shook his head again with exasperation. They continued until they came to a neat and clearly wealthy district; the houses were orderly, the roads well paved, and everything looked as if it was painstakingly cleaned. The magistrate’s manor occupied a spot deeper into the district, and it sat higher than the other houses. It was terribly gaudy. All the most garish and expensive pigments were used to paint the wood, while bizarre art pieces decorated the garden. Before either of them could comment, two servants rushed out from the house.
Wordlessly, Yue Qinglan and Wang Yuanfei dismounted from their horses. The servants bowed to the pair before quickly disappearing with the horses in tow. It was just as well; they were spared from tedious explanation. The two of them made their way to the manor’s front entrance. A servant girl opened the door before either of them could announce their presence. “Please enter, my lords,” a crisp voice said.
The pair entered the house’s main hall. It was less gaudy than the exterior, but only slightly. “There is no need to be so gracious in addressing us,” answered Wang Yuanfei, in a way that implied it would be wisest for the magistrate to continue addressing them in this manner. The magistrate put on a strained smile as he motioned for the pair to sit. He personally poured the tea before presenting each of them a cup with both hands.
The magistrate cleared his throat before speaking. “Wang-daren, Yue-daren, I must extend my sincerest gratitude. Without your timely arrival, this city would be doomed.”
“Oh, I would not go that far,” Wang Yuanfei replied airily, just to be difficult. “Without a city full of easy prey, how else would the fox sustain itself?”
The magistrate’s eye twitched. Yue Qinglan shifted uncomfortably in his seat. After a beat of silence, the magistrate said, “...Yes. Quite right.”
Wang Yuanfei smiled sweetly. “Now then, shall we get to the heart of the matter? Where is the fox?”
The following day, the pair made their way to the nine-tailed fox’s lair. It did not take long for them to reach the lair’s entrance. After alighting from their clouds, they began taking in their surroundings. No guard or protective measure of any sort blocked their path. Yue Qinglan was furiously scribbling down notes. “Fascinating,” he muttered, more to himself than Wang Yuanfei. “Not a single obstacle for potential enemies to encounter. Just how powerful is this fox?”
“Perhaps it is not that powerful at all. Perhaps it lures its enemies into a false sense of security, and overpowers them that way,” Wang Yuanfei mused. He tapped his cheek thoughtfully. “A tactic that I would use myself.”
“Hm. I think it’s best to exercise caution. All we know about this nine-tailed fox is that it's not afraid to attack directly.”
“Alright then.” Wang Yuanfei motioned to the cave’s massive doors. “Shall we?”
Wang Yuanfei flung the doors open with ease, Ruihan already in hand. He looked around the cave’s main hall. When he was sure that there was no immediate threat, he nodded to Yue Qinglan. Slowly, both of them entered. The air inside the cave was frigid; it dug into them like claws through flesh. No light source illuminated their surroundings. Wang Yuanfei conjured five little fires and sent them into a ring position around the cave to provide light. There was nothing decorating the cave’s interior. The ceiling and walls were high and smooth, clearly purposefully carved. Aside from the cave’s unnatural smoothness and massive doors, there was nothing to indicate that anyone or anything lived here.
Suddenly, there was a rush of air–then a resonant clang as Ruihan blocked something sharp. Yue Qinglan swiftly threw a talisman in the direction of the clash. An inhuman shriek closely followed by the sizzling sound of flesh burning echoed around the cave. The creature–no doubt the fox–attacked again, only to meet Ruihan’s blade once more. Enraged, the fox lunged toward Yue Qinglan. Wang Yuanfei immediately gave chase, his heart jumping up into his throat. Too late, he realized that the fox’s attack was just a feint. The fox’s claws descended on both of them with lightning speed. Now they were both pinned under her massive, knife-sharp claws. Drool threatened to drip down from her snarling jaws. Ruihan had been knocked out of Wang Yuanfei’s grip–it now sat just out of reach at a tantalizing distance.
Yue Qinglan had already started slowly inching his right arm out of the fox’s grip. He had carefully hidden a talisman up his sleeve and was waiting for the opportune moment. Wang Yuanfei noticed and started struggling like mad to keep the fox’s attention trained solely on him. As Wang Yuanfei struggled, he managed to grab one of his hidden daggers. Then the pair glanced at each other–they both struck at once. Another inhuman shriek rang through the air, followed again by the stinging smell of burning flesh. The nine-tailed fox leapt backward. Wang Yuanfei seized the opening and ducked under her. With a final, sickening squelch, Wang Yuanfei rammed Ruihan up into the nine-tailed fox’s throat with all his might. Warm blood gushed from the wound, coating his hands, forearms, and sleeves. He slid Ruihan out.
“A-Fei, are you alright?” Yue Qinglan asked worriedly.
Wang Yuanfei looked down at his hands with vague disgust. “Fine,” he answered.
Yue Qinglan sighed in relief, then said, “You do have to admit, that nine-tailed fox was quite clever. That feint was a brilliant move.”
“She must have surmised that we were close and exploited that in order to trap both of us. Very clever, indeed.”
Yue Qinglan grinned. “But not as clever as you, right?”
Wang Yuanfei smiled back. “Nor you, A-Lan.”
After Wang Yuanfei cleaned himself off, he and Yue Qinglan travelled back to Menghai to collect payment. Then the pair treated themselves to a cup of tea and a meal at one of the city’s finest teahouses. When night fell, the pair left the city by cloud, streaking across the starry sky like a pair of comets.

other deleted jokes from dotf
[Dawn of the Fourth is a fanfiction distributed by LazuliQuetzal and licensed under a Creative Nonsense Non-Commercial--]
OKAY so these bits are too short to warrant their own solo post, so I'm just gonna lump 'em all here.
you have NO clue how much stupid I was holding back for this fic.
1. Forbidden Noodle Incident
“But we’re not siblings,” Time said. “The last time we tried to tell people that we weren't related, somebody tried to kill you for being a child cult leader,” Wind said. “So we’re family, now.”
2. Legend Is Edgy
Legend scowled at Wild. “You did not just call me edgy.” “‘Boo hoo, I’m a lonely badass made of whining and sarcasm,’” Wild said, in a mockery of Legend’s accent. “‘Don’t touch my stuff! Everything I own can kill you in new and surprising ways!’” Hyrule choked on his spit. “Okay,” Legend said, laughing. “Fair enough. I don’t sound like that, though.” “You absolutely do,” Warriors informed him.
3. Wild Likes Potatoes --
Up ahead, something was forming out of the salt. It was a monster unfamiliar to all of them: several feet tall, vaguely humanoid. And worse, there were many of them. Right on cue, a flock of vultures flew in from the tree line and began to circle over the salt flat.  The heroes drew their swords. “Okay, we’ve got time,” Warriors said, adjusting his grip on his weapon. He squinted out at the approaching creatures. “Salt monster, salt monster. What hurts salt?” “Potatoes,” Wild said.  “I—what.” “If you have over-salted food,” Wild explained. “Toss in some potatoes. Lemon juice or vinegar would also work, but I’m a fan of the potato solution myself.” “Champ, if you find a useful way to incorporate potatoes into this fight, I will take all your night watches for the next two weeks.”
4. The Climactic Fight Could Have Been Much Worse [part 1]
"When you fight Ganondorf," Wind croaked, drained of energy, "make sure you get everything right the first time." The kid blinked at him. "I... already did that," he said. Wind whipped his head up. "What?" "I fought Ganondorf already," Time said. "He's gone." "But--you're a baby," Wind said, intelligently. "You can't be the Hero. I heard that the Hero has an eight-pack. That he's shredded."
5. The Climactic Fight Could Have Been Much Worse [part 2]
"You good?" Time asked, running to his side. He helped Wind straighten up and inspected his throat with a sharp eye. "Does it look like I'm fine?!" Not-Legend snapped, clutching his toes. "Literally, why would he be talking to you," Wind wheezed.
6. The Climactic Fight Could Have Been Much Worse [part 3]
“It’s not healing,” Time said, voice rising in pitch. “Sailor, why isn’t it healing? Why isn’t it healing?!” “Go smash a pot,” Wind ordered, biting his panic down. "You ever wonder why we smash pots?" Sky mumbled. "Isn't that weird?" "Hurry up!" Wind ordered, pushing Time away. "We're losing him!"
7. Nothing is original, I am a Meme
"Sorry!" Wind blurted. His ears burned. "It's the authority issues! But I think--we had a baby for five days. And it was--" daunting, panic-inducing, terrifying "--annoying as hell to see him do things." "He's eleven, so shut the fuck up."
8. Remember when Wind taught Baby Time the word 'fuck'? Wouldn't it be funny if that affected his vocabulary when he went back to being a normal adult
"I fought Ganondorf, too! So, if you could tone down the whole 'listen to me, I'm the leader' thing--" "Sailor, Time said, cutting him off. "The reason we don't keep your suggestions in mind is not because you're a kid. It's because you never give us a fucking explanation."

Chapter 43: Star Death Reality Show (XXVI)
Just like watching a poor lamb trapped in a hunter's snare, wailing would not arouse the compassion of a seasoned hunter. On the contrary, the hunter would only be excited about the delicious food dying.
Looking at Qi Leren who had been struck by lightning, Su He said faintly, "I know many ways to avoid contracts, but it’s not easy to do. Most of the methods are one-off skills or items, or there is an extremely long cooldown time. Even if you don't have one… It’s best to be careful."
Qi Leren gawked at Su He, as if he had been drained of all his strength. He didn't say a word for a long time, and his lowered head did not show anger. Only his eyelashes were shaking, as if he was almost unable to bear such a failure, and he was crying.
This long silence was not ridiculous, but sad.
It was like watching a gambler at the end of his rope, piling up all the chips on the gambling table and then losing everything.
Everything that followed seemed to be a mechanical repetition. Qi Leren once again signed his name on the parchment with no facial expression, and the signed letters were distorted by his shaking. At the moment when he put down his pen, his spine seemed to be knocked out section by section, slumping on his chair and silently watching the sunrise.
A rising sun that would never rise.
"Can I leave now?" Qi Leren asked softly, looking deeply tired.
"Anytime, but I suggest you stay a little longer or even get some sleep. Anyway, I have adjusted the time flow rate in this area for you, so you won’t be delayed too long." Su He, like a considerate friend who fully thought of him, gave him friendly advice.
But Qi Leren didn't want to stay any longer. He was willing to face the monster in the institute, and didn't want to face Su He. So he stood up, and the chair rudely dragged a harsh sound across the ground.
"I'm leaving," Qi Leren said stubbornly, his tone carrying the anger of being deceived.
"If you insist, go ahead." Su He wasn’t reluctant, anyway. His purpose had been achieved.
The Witch of Lust looked at Qi Leren curiously, because his attitude was disrespectful. As a native devil accustomed to the hierarchical atmosphere of the underworld, she didn't quite understand the relationships between human beings. Sometimes a worm could say "no" to an elephant, which was really interesting in her eyes.
To be fair, Su He was not a strict leader. If the object of comparison was the Devil of Power who had a strong desire to control, then he was an easygoing boss. If you wanted to compare him with the Devil of Slaughter, then he was a perfect boss—at least he wouldn't go crazy and dare to kill anyone, leaving him in his current state of lying half-dead under lava. The Devil of Fraud was quite tolerant of his subordinates, sometimes even almost deliberately indulgent towards them. He seldom pointed out your mistakes, but every time you made a mistake, he would remember it, but he would not show it. This attitude made people feel that he didn't care about them. This slightly malicious indulgence contributed to the weakness and self-deception in human nature, and he watched and waited with great interest until you finally crossed the boundaries he set for you...
Then you would find that you had lost everything. Even if you knelt at his feet and kissed the tips of his shoes and begged him to give you another chance, he wouldn't look at you again.
This extreme gentleness and extreme coldness combined to form a contradictory and complicated person. The witches favored him and feared him. Even the Witch of Lust, who was famous for her debauchery, was much more disciplined in front of him. At least when she appeared in front of Su He, she would pick clothes from her closet that didn’t show her off. When Su He told her to dress properly to entertain guests, she would always find a dress that wrapped her from head to foot. However, in order to express her dissatisfaction, she didn't mind expressing her protest in a small way by means of excessive obedience. Her boss didn't care about this level of protest.
He was really unpredictable sometimes.
She had thought that trying to deceive the Devil of Fraud would make people lose his favor and even irritate him, but Su He's reaction was just the opposite. It seemed that he had added ten points in his heart to this audacious human being.
The Witch of Lust yawned a little and watched the poor man hesitate by the chair. She looked at Su He's face and asked politely, "Shall I take you out, baby?"
"Thank you," Qi Leren, who was worried about how to leave, said quickly.
Su He’s left hand on the armrest of the chair supported his cheek. He asked without warning, "Who gave you the necklace around your neck?"
Qi Leren's cold sweat came back again. In these past few minutes in the field, he had experienced great ups and downs, and his nerves were over-stressed. He had become a frightened bird. He was just glad that he had successfully crossed the border, and he was ready to keep this state and leave quickly. Who knew that Su He would come out with something else?
Fortunately, Su He hadn't found it.
He hadn't found that when he signed his name for the first time, he hadn't used any skill cards at all.
No, he hadn't.
He had made a wonderful deduction—he had successfully deceived Su He once, using an item of unknown origin as the laptop. So this time, under almost the same precondition, would Su He still fall for it? Would he believe that he had honestly signed the contract and was ready to fulfill it? He was not an obedient man in Su He’s eyes.
The best way to dispel Su He's doubts was to make him feel that he had seen through him, expose him personally, watch him suffer, despair, and collapse, and then watch him give in.
So he had had a bold plan, and he had decided to take a gamble. Then he had succeeded.
He was so ecstatic that he had to lower his head to hide his inner secret and fanatical joy and let that passion explode as fireworks in his heart.
However, he also had to consider that this decision would bring him great risks in the future—when he was really raised to a half-field, how should he explain it to Su He?
This concern slightly diluted the excited mood, and even the last resort was shattered by Su He’s sudden question, which made Qi Leren tremble with fear.
"This aura... It’s the Prophet’s?" Su He asked, raising his eyebrows.
Qi Leren did not say yes, nor did he say no. He asked, "Do you know the Prophet?"
As if they could never talk well, Su He also threw out a rhetorical question: "Don't you think that the Village of Dawn is too similar to the Village of Dusk?"
Qi Leren was stupefied. So, it turned out that this field was not a "field that imitates the scenery of the Village of Dawn" as Su He had once said, but was the real Village of Dawn.
But if the Village of Dawn was a field, then the Village of Dusk...
Qi Leren suddenly understood. The Prophet who slept beneath the Courthouse and spent most of his time in the cold ice pool, it turned out that he had been silently supporting the Village of Dawn that sheltered mankind. As a player, he did not know how to escape the sanctions of time. He had even spent more than 20 years completing compulsory tasks, and had survived to this day.
"A naive idealist inherited Maria's will, created a box of time with the belief of protecting, and fixed the newly established refuge under dusk forever. His original force was 'time'. Originally, he was the one most likely to evade mission sanctions, if he had not lost to the box." Su He's expression was full of compassion and tenderness.
The Prophet’s original force? Qi Leren seemed to understand. He knew that some of the higher demons had original forces, such as jealousy, lust, despair... They were getting stronger and stronger while approaching the original force. At the level of the three Devil Kings, they had almost merged with the original force.
But did the Prophet, a field-level human being, also have his own original force?
His force, was it time?
Qi Leren's heart was full of curiosity and doubt, but Su He had no intention to solve his doubts: "Go, don't challenge your limits with your life, you’ll never know what kind of miracle you will create. Although 99.9% of people end up dead through this process, I sincerely hope that you are the exception, because I have some expectations for you.
"Qi Leren, today's adventure is only the first step. I am waiting for the day when you complete the transformation," Su He said.
The beautiful Village of Dawn began to become blurred, and even Su He's voice gradually drifted away, as if separated by a dream.
When Qi Leren came to his senses, he still stood in the corridor on the lowest level of the institute, and only a few seconds had passed.
It was the fourth day of the game... No, the zero hour had passed, and it was the fifth day. He didn't know if the army’s ship could arrive. He had reason to suspect that it wouldn't come too quickly. After all, the rescue was always late after all the problems were solved.
Su He said that he had released the octopus in the underground glacier, which was definitely more difficult than the ones he had encountered before. He needed to upgrade his equipment, such as finding a rocket launcher like what Mark had used against him.
This was in the institute’s armoury, but Qi Leren hadn’t taken it since he hadn’t expected to use it. He decided to double back and look for it. In addition, we should find a NPC that was still alive, and take them to the instrument that could detect whether they had become a host, and he hoped to meet Dr. Lu and Du Yue along the way...
Qi Leren returned to the stairs and began to go up. When he passed the power room, he went in again, restarted the power supply, and restored power to the whole underground research institute.
With the light, he was feeling much better. Qi Leren finally recovered from the frightening meeting just now, stopped thinking about Su He, and absorbed himself in preparing for the next challenge. According to game logic, there must be a restock of supplies before the war. Unfortunately, the copy world did not necessarily come according to game logic, so he had to rely on himself. He didn't want to rush unprepared into that horrible boss battle.
Suddenly there was a noise in the corner of the power distribution room. Qi Leren suddenly looked towards it and raised the gun in his hand, shouting, "Who?"
"...It's me." He Yi stood up. His condition looked worse than before. He was emaciated and almost withered. "Mark came in, I met him!"
Qi Leren was taken aback and realized that what he said was in reference to when Qi Leren had wanted to leave the institute through the laser corridor before, but He Yi, who had made an agreement with him to cut off the power supply, did not cut off the power in time—because at that time, Mark had moved the debris in Annie's basement and had entered the institute to attack He Yi.
"I’ve taken care of him, and Annie, Xue Jiahui, and Francis; all four of them were parasitized," Qi Leren said calmly.
He Yi looked at him in astonishment: "How did you do it?"
If it weren't for the enemy at present, Qi Leren would still use the rhetoric of "an apostle of God" to fool him. Unfortunately, now that his Prophet's Heart skill was cooling down, he didn't need to continue acting. He simply said: "It's a long story. Let's talk about it when we have time. Right now we’re in danger..."
"I know." He Yi leaned wearily against the wall and smiled bitterly. "It’s come out."
"What?" Qi Leren became nervous.
"That monster..." He Yi looked desperately at the ceiling above his head, as if he were an outlaw being chased by troops behind the cliff ahead, and murmured in a low voice, "We can't escape."
"Do you... Do you know something?" Qi Leren finally asked the question that lingered in his mind.
For a long time, He Yi's attitude had been a bit strange. Qi Leren hadn't thought much at first, but with the discovery of the plot, he had to face up to this problem—He Yi, he was an insider.
"Why is there an amphioctopus here? Why did I happen to find a basement when I was kidnapped by Mark? Why am I able to blow up the access to the research institute accurately but I am safe and sound? Why can this institute’s power supply, which has been off for many years, still be used? Why do I know where there are weapons and how to use the equipment? Have you thought about these questions?" He Yi asked, one question after another.

Editor’s Notes: To clarify, the “forces” mentioned in this chapter are along the line of forces of nature but on a more human scale, ie. the “forces” the witches and demons have as their titles. A closer translation would have been to use “power”, but I wanted to make sure it was distinct since “power” is already used in several other contexts in this novel.

Clive and Flora with an AU where Clive is slowly losing his memory...please?
Thank you so much for asking!! This is sort of a rough draft of the AU that I talked about the other day where Clive loses his memory because of constant time travel. I think this is going to be a longer story, so here's a little bit from where Flora first meets Clive again in the research facility where she's working.
...
“Big Lu--C-Clive?”
Flora cuts herself off, staring in horror at the sight before her.
For ten years, three distinct images of Clive Dove had lived inside her mind. The smiling, heroic figure of Big Luke, with his kindness and daring. The laughing, frighteningly manic young man from the fortress, blinded by his madness. The quiet boy, being led away by the police, dignified in his defeat, in spite of his shaking hands and the blood in his hair.
Three unique people that she’d never quite been able to integrate into one person, no matter how hard she tried.
But this man, while undoubtedly Clive, seems like a fourth person altogether. He’s pale, stick-thin, his eyes closed as he lies motionless on the bed. Any fear or anger Flora might have felt at seeing him is gone, replaced with a different sort of anxiety. Why is he here? He should be in prison, shouldn’t he? Not locked away in a research institute. Why is he in such horrible condition?
He… he can’t be dead, can he?
But before Flora can travel further down that thought trail, Clive’s eyes flutter open. He blinks, seemingly trying to focus in on her, but his eyes are vacant. He doesn’t recognize her.
“Ah,” he says, voice rasping. “Time for another round, I take it?”
Another round of what? Flora blinks, struggling to find the right words. “Cl… Clive,” she starts cautiously. “What are you doing here? I-I thought…” She trails away, hesitant. She desperately wants explanations, but he seems so weak, she’s unsure that he’d be able to answer a barrage of questions.
“You’re not here for the… the time machine?”
Time machine?
It seems like Flora learns something new and devastating with every passing second. She’d thought that all of the research on time machines had been destroyed ten years ago. Then again, she’d thought Clive had been in prison for ten years as well.
Flora can tell that Clive is struggling to keep his voice level, but it’s impossible to avoid hearing the fear in the last two words of his sentence. “No, I’m not,” she says levelly, trying to stay on-task. She certainly wants to hear more about the time machine, but now’s not the time. She needs to find out why he’s here, and if there’s some way that she can help him. “Do you… do you know who I am?”
Clive blinks, then focuses his gaze on her. “I’m sorry,” he says, almost too quietly to hear. “I’m not sure. Can you tell me your name?”
“Flora,” she says in a slow whisper, watching him with trepidation.
Clive’s eyes widen, something like recognition dawning in his face. Then, a shadow crosses his face. He lets out a quiet gasp, letting his face fall into his hand. “I… I can’t quite remember,” he says, his voice trembling. “I should know you, but…”
So, he hasn’t completely forgotten her.
Flora can’t stand to see him struggling like this. “We were… we were friends. Ten years ago,” she says hesitantly. She’s not sure if that’s entirely true, but it’s close enough for a short explanation.
“Are… are you sure?” Clive’s voice rises in a panicked whisper. “It’s… it’s so hard to know what really happened. I’ve… I’ve met so many people… and I’ve met the same people over and over again, and all of the timelines… they’re all crossed, and I don’t know what the real truth is anymore. But I think… I hurt you, didn’t I?”
Clive’s rambling is difficult to follow, but his last sentence is painfully accurate. He did hurt her. More than he could ever know.
But the regret in his voice is genuine. He seems deeply sorry, considering that he doesn’t clearly remember her or what he did.
Flora’s not sure what to do. Whatever Clive’s going through here seems to be approved of by the government; it could be his punishment for his attack on London. But this seems far worse than jail time; jail wouldn’t destroy Clive’s memory and sanity like this, would it?
She can’t just leave him here, can she?
“You should go,” Clive says finally, looking away from her. “You shouldn’t be here. They’ll find you, and I don’t want you to get into trouble.”
Flora decides.
“I’m going to get you out of here. Okay?”
