Quote
I feel the most affinity with Marriott’s writing when it illuminates blackness as a structural position, as an ontology rather than an identity or sociological experience, though the latter is usually what we mean when we say “race.” Too often our work is singularly focused on individual experience or relies on a Cartesian form of consciousness. Such work focuses on black people’s identities or stops at what black folks say about their experience without interrogating the conditions that make such speech possible and without interrogating the limits of consciousness itself. I worry that in this work, history and structure disappear. It is my view that the lives of black people of all genders are structured in the context of antiblack existential negation, but it is rare to have our position as shattered subjects theorized and even rarer for it to be theorized with deep attentiveness to gender and sexuality — as Marriott does. His scholarship speaks to the existential paradox of blackness, what I refer to as “existential negation” in this essay —namely, to have subjectivity while one’s subjecthood is constantly negated, one’s voice made inaudible by cultural fantasy, and one’s ego assailed by an Other that is inseparable from the self.[3] Marriott is known as an elegant theorist of psychoanalysis and culture. But I have been most struck by the ethics of his writing — in particular, by its ability to bring into focus the world’s collective disavowal of the violence subtending the production of blackness. This collective disavowal exists despite or because of the centrality of antiblackness for the production of the world’s sociality. The imagistic quality of the prose is the stuff of nightmares: the dread- inspiring quality of the unconscious life of race, a nightmarish vision of black men that has been imposed across the color line.
Zakiyyah Iman Jackson - Waking Nightmares—on David Marriott. [GLQ 1 June 2011; 17 (2-3): 357–363]

Though the question of Marx’s debt to Hegel and capital’s relation to conceptual thought now takes up a dizzying many volumes, what is not readily available is a systematic attempt to think through the conditions of unfreedom as anything but an incomplete Idea. Instead, we have cottage industries on the racism of a particular thinker, descriptive histories of racism’s false consciousness, and structural accounts of racism that, while supplying the content of unfreedom, rarely investigate its forms. Racial slavery, as unfreedom’s “dramatis personae”, is rendered external to the concept, such that the materiality of antiblack violence can only be taken as evidence of the failure of reality’s adequation, with this failure then translated into the obduracy of those who insist on the pertinence of race. Conceptually centralizing slavery, instead of colluding to vanish it in empirical instances or timeless attributes, would involve deciphering how the failure of pure being to ground itself shows another ground: the historical generation of a being who is “not”. If the very groundlessness of this “not” means we can never access it, critical thought has nonetheless long been tracing the semblance (“schein”) of blackness in the relative conceptualizations of race, family, property, freedom, civil society, and the state. Indeed, because the emptiness of the “not,” or what David Marriott gathers together as the “n’est pas,” “does not constitute a concept […] for it is not determinable or meaningful,” only those who do positively take on the project of negation, internalizing it through being, becoming, and determinacy, can become meaningful political subjects. As a corollary, the nothing that relays blackness and precedes being, for which racial slavery becomes a vehicle, can never be informed by the terms of its own declivity.

Play 21: Fish in the Dark by Larry David
First performed: Cort Theatre, New York, 2015
Quote: "Oh come on. Why is it that after someone dies all of a sudden people decide to become honest? Not only is honesty not the best policy, it's actually the worst of all possible policies." (Norman)
Stage direction: [he comes running out in his underwear]
Notable cast: Larry David originated the role of Norman himself, with Jason Alexander replacing him later in the run. The premiere cast included Rita Wilson, Rosie Perez, Jake Cannavale and Jerry Adler.
Notes: David's first (and so far only) play benefits from being written in a voice that's instantly recognisable. Drawing on Jewish comedy staples as well as the traditions of classic farce, Fish is a close relative of Curb Your Enthusiasm in its twisted observational dialogue and cringeworthy schemes, but underneath the language there's nothing very new or revolutionary here - actually, in its general shape and tone, this is surprisingly old fashioned theatre for the masses. A solid comedy, but nothing challenging.

Instead of filling in the space of the family or gender with positive content, Afro-pessimism’s formal intervention draws from black feminism’s “point of access to a no-when and no-where” to underscore its own impossibility by analyzing race and gender as forms of appearance whose reproduction conceals the nothingness they were mandated to encode. If the slave mother is condemned to pass on blackness as nothing, or, in David Marriott’s reading of Fanon, the “n’est pas,” that which is “severed from generation, and yet reproduces itself as the cut that severs,” then it might be conducive to consider all forms of appearance, whether gendered, classed, or raced, encoded as humans, mothers, lovers, or laborers, as a refusal of blackness.

Here are some companies that strongly support Israel (but are not Boycott targets). There is no ethical consumption under capitalism and boycotting is a political strategy - not a moral one. If you did try to boycott every supporter of Israel you would struggle to survive because every major company supports Israel (as a result of attempting to keep the US economy afloat), that being said, the ones that are being boycotted by masses and not already on the organic boycott list are coloured red.

Note
I'm not as involved in mcyt as I have been in the past. who is in this Brighton group of creators?
Wilbur Tommy Jack Niki Rhianna Soot David Lexie Ash Kabosu Wisp James Marriott Jago Aria Rue I'm missing people but I am tired. This friend group has scattered to the wind over the past year for what now seems like pretty obvious reasons. Rue, Rhianna, Lexie and Shubble have completely distanced themselves from them and are all very vocal about how something was very off there.
Edit: Keep in mind there were other people, I'm absolutely leaving people out. There are also people that were on the outside circles either because they didn't live in Brighton or went in and out of that friend group. Those people should also be heavily side eyed.
