Title: What Dreams Are Made Of
Pairing: Jim Gordon/Detective!Reader
Rating: PG13 (language)
Summary: When GCPD gets a new transfer, Jim worries she could be another corrupt cop. He worries even more when he finds himself attracted to her.
Notes: I had this dream last and I knew I wanted to use it in a piece, but wasn't sure what kind of story it would be. But I started writing down the dream because, even though I remembered it vividly, I knew I would eventually forget all the details. It was crazy that I even remembered all the details. I usually very very rarely remember my dreams. Anyway, here we are. Hope you enjoy!
Warnings: none

Any time a new detective transferred into the GCPD, it was always the flip of a coin. Just about everyone in the department was on the take in one way or another, including Jim’s own partner, which didn’t exactly bode well for trust between the two of them. So when Captain Simonson informed him that there was an incoming transfer coming in that day, he had tried to taper his expectations. Having just made Sergeant, he didn’t want to make waves, at least not yet. Not when it was only him and Stephens that would be standing up. The new transfer hailed from Starling City, in Washington state, and apparently was a bit of a rockstar with great promise. What Jim found curious was why you chose to transfer.
He had read your personnel file; you were young, evidently sharp, and even had a few commendations, including the Medal of Valor for talking down a gunman at a bank robbery in progress during your off hours. He imagined you had been well on a path to making Detective First Grade within the next year or two, and yet you chose to transfer to an entirely different city, in a different state. And one all the way across the country to boot. And what he wanted to know more than anything else was why.
As far as he knew there was no rampant corruption in Starling, at least not among the SCPD. Not like there was in Gotham. The only thing he could think of was that you were running from something, though what that could possibly be, he couldn’t discern. Still, the commissioner himself had been the one to approve the transfer, and according to some, the Captain had been quite reluctant to accept it.
The one thing he didn’t expect when you walked into the squad room — in your button-down flannel and fitted jeans, shield clipped to your belt — was how breath-takingly beautiful you were. He found himself blinking several times to ensure he wasn’t imagining it, and was unable to look away from you as you carried a box to the empty desk that was opposite Ramirez’s. Swallowing and clearing his throat, he forced himself to look back down at the case file he was supposed to be reviewing.
A moment later, a knock at his door demanded his attention. He looked up as Captain Simonson opened the door. “Gordon, we just got a tip; the Maroni’s are moving a shipment of dope down at the docks. I want you to check it out. Call for backup if you see anything go down.”
Jim tried to keep his expression neutral as he nodded. The Maroni family were long term rivals of Carmine Falcone, the mob boss who ran Gotham all but in name. Despite his willingness to get any mobsters off the street, Jim knew Simonson was only asking because it was Maroni. Had it been Falcone he’d have been told to stand down.
“Flass is still at the DA’s office, we’ll go when he gets back,” he answered.
“No, Flass will be with the DA prepping for trial for a while longer. Take the rookie with you. She needs to be broken in.”
Jim’s expression fell, his eyes flickering to where you were just finishing unpacking your box. “Captain, I really think I should wait for Flass —”
“No time. Get going, Sergeant, that’s an order.” Without waiting for a response, he walked away, back to his own office.
Jim slowly took a breath, letting it out in a sigh as he stood and grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair. As he put it on, he eyed the way you organized your desk while talking to Ramirez. With another deep breath, he steeled his nerves and walked out of his office.
“Detective,” he said as he came up to your desk.
When you turned to look back at him, he nearly lost his breath. You were even more beautiful up close, and after a moment, you smiled up at him and stood, holding out your hand.
“Y/F/N.”
“Just getting to know our new addition, Sarge,” Ramirez said, but he barely heard her.
Shaking your hand, he swallowed at the shock that he got when your skin touched his. “We got a tip about a drug shipment down at the docks. Captain wants me to test out your skills.”
Maybe if he just kept things professional, he could get through this stakeout without becoming too interested in you. He could ignore how attractive you were while he dug into your motive for transferring if he just kept things professional.
“Oh great!” you answered, grabbing your jacket off your desk. There was an eager smile on your face that made his stomach do a somersault. “Let’s do it.”
Nodding once, he led you out of the precinct and out to his car, trying to ignore his heart beating a bit faster than normal as the two of you buckled in.
“So, who are we looking to collar?” you asked, looking over at him.
“Some associates of the Maroni family, they’re —”
“Rivals of the Falcone family,” you said with a nod.
“Yeah,” he said, turning on the car.
“Hey, maybe it’s just cause I’m new and all, but… I was checking out GCPD’s arrests over the last year, and it seems like there were a lot more of Maroni’s guys picked up than there were any of Falcone’s guys.”
He cut his eyes to you in interest. So maybe you really were just a transfer and not just another corrupt cop trying to take advantage of the situation in Gotham. Although you may have been testing him. You must’ve thought he protested your claims with his expression because yours changed in an instant, going from curious to relenting.
“I mean, like I said, it’s probably just that I’m new and don’t know how things work around here. I just —”
“Falcone basically runs Gotham,” he said simply, still keeping his walls up. The last thing he needed was to show you his hand too quickly.
“Oh,” you replied, licking your lips before you joked, “and how long’s he been on the force?” You chuckled nervously.
He couldn’t help the way one side of his lips quirked upward. “This could be a long night. Stop for a coffee?”
“Yeah,” you replied, offering a polite smile.
Stopping at a bodega, you got out before he could, telling him that you would treat since he was driving. He wasn’t sure whether it was a tradition from SCPD that you assumed was the same here in Gotham, but he hadn’t really had a chance to protest before you were out of the car and striding into the bodega. A few minutes later, you came out with two cups of coffee and a brown bag. Did you buy snacks too?
“I forgot to ask how you take it, so I got you everything on the side,” you said, placing the cups one by one into the holders in the center console, and the brown bag at your feet.
“Thank you,” he said, turning on the ignition again and pulling back onto the street.
For a while, the drive was silent as he made his way through Gotham traffic and thought up how he would go about asking you for details about your transfer. He knew there had been a recent opening filed into the system, but thought the chances of someone in Starling seeing it was pretty slim.
“By the way, I never asked your name, Sarge,” you said, looking over at him.
He cast you a sideways glance as he turned into an alleyway that led to the docks. “Gordon. Jim Gordon.”
“Jim,” you whispered.
He swallowed as a shiver fell over him and pushed down the thrill that ignited in his chest at the sound of you saying his name. He turned his head to look at you with an arched brow.
“I-I mean Sergeant Gordon,” you corrected.
He pulled up behind the docks, tucked in the alley where you could still have a clear vantage point of the dock as well as who came in and out without being seen. Putting the car in park, he shut off the engine and took the lid off one of the coffee cups as you put the brown bag on top of the center armrest. He glanced up thankfully and rummaged in the bag for his usual cream and two sugars.
“You mind if I ask you something, Detective?” he asked as he opened a cream and dumped it into his coffee, satisfied when it immediately began to turn a lighter color.
“Sure,” you answered, picking up your own coffee, peeling off the lid and beginning to carefully blow over the top.
“You take it black?” he asked, noting that you hadn’t reached into the bag.
“Oh...” you chuckled, lifting your cup in a mock toast. “Yeah.”
“Huh.” Damn it, Gordon, focus! What you need to know is why she transferred, not how she takes her fucking coffee! “That’s not what I wanted to ask you.”
“Oh,” you replied, looking back at him.
“Why Gotham?” he asked, looking into the bag and pulling out a stirrer. Jesus, you really had brought him everything. “I looked in your jacket, you had a good thing going at SCPD. Great marks from the Academy, commendations…”
You shrugged. “Yeah…”
“You probably would’ve made First Grade in a couple years. So why come all the way across the country just to start over?”
“I don’t mind having to start over,” you said with a shrug.
“Okay, but why?” he asked again. “Most cops I know would at least wait to make First Grade before putting in for a lateral transfer. Especially with a Medal of Valor.”
You smiled to yourself. “I didn’t need a Medal of Valor, I was just doing my job.”
“You were off-duty.”
“Just because I was off-duty, doesn’t mean I stopped being a cop,” you answered.
Your answer seemed promising. Maybe you weren’t just another bent cop, trying to get in on the action in Gotham City. Still, he kept his guard up, not quite ready to consider you a possible ally. He tried not to notice how adorable you looked when you scrunched up your nose against the steam as you took a tentative sip from your cup.
“Fair enough. You still haven’t answered my question.”
You paused for a moment, eyes pointed toward the entrance of the dock. Whatever he thought your answer might have been, it was nowhere near the one you gave him.
“A few months back, I dreamt that I was trying to get across this huge cliff, but I had my video camera in my hand. I thought if I could make my way across this cliff with my camera, I’d be fine. Only as I started to climb across, eventually I realized I wasn’t holding my camera anymore. I look down and there it is, floating in the ocean at least 100 feet below me. I panic and start thinking about what to do. I mean, it’s my camera! All my memories are in there, and I want to take them with me across this cliff. So, I figure I’d go down to get it and then just climb back up. Easy, right? I just had this gut feeling that I’d jumped from this same cliff, into the water a thousand times before, this time would be no different, right?
“So I decided to go down and get it. And as I’m falling I realize that I had never fallen this far before, and how the hell am I gonna get back up the cliff?! My body starts to change angle in the air and I fall into the water on my back. So I start trying to swim back up, except hitting the water didn’t do much to slow my momentum and I start to sink, fast. I feel like I’m being pushed down by an invisible weight on my chest, and no matter how hard I try to swim against this weight, I can’t get to the surface. I woke up right as I realized I was drowning.”
Jim’s brows were furrowed behind the rim of his glasses, his mouth agape as he stared back at you. “You transferred to Gotham…” he started to slowly reiterate, “...because you had a dream that you drowned?”
You nodded, a small breath of laughter flowing through your lips as you brought your mug up for a sip of coffee.
“I don’t get it,” he said, shaking his head.
“Neither did I, at first. For a second I thought maybe I had just stopped breathing in my sleep and woke myself up,” you answered. “But then I remembered that I didn’t gasp for air when I woke up, I just… woke up. So, I rolled over and went back to sleep. Got up about four hours later, did the whole morning routine, sat on my couch for twenty minutes, staring at the wall, like always —”
“Staring at the wall?”
“Yeah, my brain functionality is usually just under 50% in the mornings, so I have to sit on my couch and stare at the wall for twenty minutes while I drink my tea, just to get myself to at least 75% brain functionality before I go to work. Anyway…”
His mustache shifted as an amused smile settled on his lips while you continued.
“I was sitting on my couch, staring at the wall and I couldn’t stop thinking about this dream. The more I thought about it, the more I wondered about what it could mean, if it meant anything at all. So I started googling, of course, and most of the sources I found said that dreaming about drowning could be symbolic of some kind of exhaustion or a feeling of losing control. But that didn’t make sense, so I started to think about other parts of the dream, like the video camera. It was definitely mine. I recognized it right away. I remember holding it, thinking, ‘I cannot drop this thing, it has all my memories that I want to take with me to the other side. I cannot drop it.’
“But the strange thing is, I don’t remember when I dropped it. I just know that when I reached out for that first grip, it wasn’t in my hand anymore, but I didn’t even notice that I was supposed to be holding it until I was already halfway across this cliff. That was when I remembered, ‘holy shit! I was supposed to climb and hold the camera, but I must’ve dropped it right away!’ That was when I looked down and saw it floating on a wave.
“And in my head I’m thinking, ‘well, Y/N, you fucked that up. It’s done, it’s gone. Even if you got it back, it’s ruined. It’s not gonna work anymore, dumbass.’”
His smile that he tried to keep under control widened slightly as a chuckle shook his chest. Jesus, why did you have to be so cute? Not just that, but you effortlessly showed off your detective skills just from relaying your reaction to a damn dream.
“But then I thought, ‘well the SD card might still work. It might still have at least some memories on it.’”
“I take it that’s when you jumped?”
“Yeah, but that’s another thing. The more I thought about all the details of this dream, the clearer it all became,” you answered. “And I realized that I didn’t jump. I let go.”
“I’m still not seeing what this has to do with you transferring to GCPD,” he said.
You looked away as though a clearer explanation was sitting on the dashboard, your eyes lighting up a moment later before your eyes turned back to him.
“Ever since I was a kid, I’ve wanted to leave Starling. I wanted to see other places, I wanted to have new experiences. So when I saw that Gotham was open to taking lateral transfers, I thought, ‘why not? I’ll apply. What’s the worst that could happen? They say no?’”
“Sure.”
“But when they didn’t say no… when they said yes, I started to have doubts. I started panicking, wondering if it was the right move or whether I was just making a rash decision without really thinking it through,” you said.
“Right,” he replied with a single nod.
“I think the other side of the cliff was the job at GCPD, the camera was my life back in Starling City, or maybe just the parts that I wanted to bring with me but couldn’t. And me letting go of my path to the other side and drowning was what would happen if I didn’t take this transfer,” you said.
“Interesting,” he replied with a slow, single nod.
“I know it sounds weird, okay? I never said it wasn’t weird.” You chuckled softly, picking at the lip of your coffee cup.
“It’s not that weird,” he replied after a moment, taking a sip from his own cup as he turned his eyes toward the entrance of the dock.
“But was it a good-enough reason for you, Sarge?” you asked softly, offering a polite smile when he looked back at you.
“Yeah, sure it was,” he said, nodding. “It’s like I said, Carmine Falcone basically runs Gotham. Your transfer with the record you have just seemed…” He tried to find the most appropriate word that would be least likely to offend you. “Unusual. I guess I just wanted to know whether you were gonna be just another dirty cop that I can’t trust.”
You nodded slowly. “I guess that’s fair.” Your eyes shifted to the entrance and you nodded toward it. “Looks like our first guest has just arrived.”
He followed your gaze as the car parked in front of the dock, their lights turning off. “As soon as his date gets here, you come around from behind the car, I’ll cover the front.”
“Got it,” you answered as he called for backup. When he set the radio back in its holster, you looked up at him. “So, did I pass your test?”
The corner of his lips formed another smirk as he looked back toward their suspect’s car, just as a boat pulled into the dock. “I guess we’re about to find out.”

2023 in Films
I watched way too many films this year. Here are my opinions on some of them
January
Las Cosas Del Querer (1989) - Amazing if you love sad hot people and flamenco
Canadian Bacon (1995) - Incredibly silly and Alan Alda plays the US president
Nope (2022) - A highlight of the year
February
Hellraiser (1987) - This film is actually about miscommunication in this essay I will-
Predestination (2014) - Time Travel and Gender Moments
Malignant (2021) - Camp horror masterwork
Late Phases (2014) - Mediocre werewolf film with some really interesting comments on ageism, ableism, suburbia and religion
March
Sterne (1959) - Plays into some problematic stereotypes from today's perspective but revolutionary for its time, first German film to address the Holocaust
Major League (1989) - A film I only watched to confirm that it uses a weird phrase I also found in my thesis project
Carry On Screaming (1966) - Camp. Gay. Horror. Parody.
Glen or Glenda (1953) - A product of its time and no longer up to date in its understanding of gender but surprisingly revolutionary in its compassion and earnestness despite the bad reviews
April
Taxi Driver (1976) - Isn't it frustrating when annoying people tell you a film is good and then it's actually good?
June
Mr Deeds Goes To Town (1936) - Mr Deeds has autism swag
El Espíritu de la Colmena (1973) - I really wanted to like this because civil war era Spain and Frankenstein are super up my alley but unfortunately it was so much slower than expected
Das Boot (1981) - Very long and claustrophobic but holds up to the hype
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022) - RIP King
July
Nimona (2023) - His big wet eyes bewitched me
First Blood (1982) - You're telling me the film is about Americans fighting an enemy they view as simultaneously weak and dangerous, escalating the situation, and then sending more and more men into a rainforest to die through guerilla warfare after being warned again and again they can't win this? sounds familiar
Barbie (2023) - Insert a bunch of pink emojis
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) - Made me crave bagels
Jojo Rabbit (2019) - God I love war satires
Sweet Liberty (1986) - Alan Alda having fun and also using his own film as a therapy session
The Majestic (2001) - A rewatch but it's so tragically underrated, Jim Carrey is very good in dramatic roles and McCarthy-era media is like catnip for me
Joker (2019) - This is just Taxi Driver with extra steps
August
Tin & Tina (2023) - Probably one of the worst films I have seen in a while
Battle of the Sexes (2017) - I love women
Four Lions (2010) - The ending really got me, I love when satire gets serious
The Sheriff and the Satellite Kid (1979) - Can we talk about how the theme song is just going "I'm the sheriff" "yes you're the sheriff"
Happiness (1998) - Nauseating but in a "good film but what the fuck" way
They Call Him Bulldozer (1978) - Italian Lagaan
The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) - Sad and Gay
Twister (1996) - So much better than expected
Magnolia (1999) - Cloudy with a chance of frogs, a really long but really good film and I'm not entirely sure I got it
Doubt (2008) - Somehow I watched 5 films with Philip Seymour Hoffman that month because I was haunted by his ghost or something
September
The Terminal (2004) - I assumed this to be more of a classic romcom but the whole concept (based on a true story) is so terrifying and tragic that it made me feel all emotions at once
Apocalypse Now (1979) - I knew a lot of trivia about the film but for some reason I didn't know anything about the cast so every single actor was a surprise and made me go "!!!", Also I kinda wanna write an essay about it
October
Bloodbath at the House of Death (1984) - Some of the gay jokes absolutely killed me
Last Night in Soho (2021) - I'm Not Like the Other Girls to Time Travel Murder Nightmare Pipeline, actually I really enjoyed this one but it's also super silly
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) - How do you say poor little meow meow in gaeilge
The Menu (2022) - I go to the murder restaurant I order the beesechurger, I was super surprised there's no cannibalism but tbh that would have been low hanging fruit
The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021) - Explains a lot about religion in the US, I love that she was pro lgbt, also I googled her ex husband and he has a prepper/survivalist thing going on now and scams more people
The Darjeeling Limited (2007) - we can't eat pray love ourselves out of this one boys
Holes (2003) - Hated the book as a teenager for school reasons but gave the film a try and really enjoyed it
Renfield (2023) - I expected werewolves but I enjoyed it nevertheless, My Chemical Romance is on the soundtrack, it's very silly, the effects are great
Interview with the Vampire (1994) - Oh people weren't lying about it being homoerotic
The Big Lebowski (1998) - I've had days that feel like that
November
Pappa ante Portas (1991) - Funnier now that I'm an adult, basically half the jokes my mum makes are from this film
The Meg 2: The Trench (2023) - I watched this while sick and really wanted to see a giant shark fight a giant octopus and boy did it deliver
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) - Very nice animation style
JFK (1991) - I actually fell asleep halfway through because it's so long but can we talk about how this film is just A-listers but has some of the worst wigs and makeup I've seen
Bottoms (2023) - A spiritual sequel to Heathers
December
When Harry Met Sally (1989) - They deserve each other (derogatory) but that one restaurant scene was pretty funny
The Royal Nanny (2022) - one of the many Hallmark films my mum made me watch and this is perhaps the worst one, incredibly sexist even for a Hallmark film and they clearly mean Mi5 but say Mi7 which was a WW2 propaganda service? Also they really want me to believe there is a British prince called Colin and that he doesn't look like his family tree is a circle?
I forgot the title but there was also the one where two people get stuck in a time loop while trying to make a sponsored youtube video about baking and I didn't really pay attention much but man that was bad

Die "Gayness" in 4><Z (I guess)

Hallo Nina,
Zuerst soll Time Doesn't Love You Like I Love You abgeschlossen werden, dann ist die neue FF für das Promptspiel dran. Aber vergessen tu' ich Tausendmal Berührt nie, keine Sorge 🖤
Hier findet ihr erst einmal das neue (und letzte) Kapitel der U-Boot FF.
(Ein Epilog folgt noch.)

I tried redesigning Lagoona Blue from the 2022 Monster High live action movie
Tumblr media
(they couldn’t even make the quirky blurb sound right. “the bestie with a bite” sounds better 🙄)
so. when I first saw the trailer for Monster High: The Movie (2022), I had trouble trying to find Lagoona. then I searched out promos and YouTube reviews, and was horrified to discover her movie design. compared to other characters—where they at least tried to make them look like their original counterparts—she looked so unlike herself I wouldn’t even begin to think it was her if you told me.
a human skin tone instead of greenish blue, barely noticeable fins—a general lack of obvious sea monster features, and the features that are there are immediately toned down by the fact she looks too human, which is completely not the point of being a sea monster. the outfit they chose for her also makes her look like an Instagram influencer? I can tell what they were going for, but they failed because they seemed to be too scared of accessorizing her more fittingly and made her sorta “normie-fied”. they probably thought going all out would be outdated and cringe or something.
I was devastated. so I took matters into my own hands—I decided I wanted to fix Lagoona Blue’s movie design. she’s one of my favorites, if not my top favorite nowadays because I really love sea monsters. there are so many different ways to design sea monsters, and they did this? lackluster, to say the least!
Tumblr media
ta daaaa! before I break it down I feel like I need to pardon myself for being shamefully unaware of many modern fashion trends, but I tried to style her best I could to what’s sorta trendy with da kids these days.
now, if I allowed myself free range, I would’ve designed Lagoona a completely different way. but I decided to challenge myself a little—I wanted to redesign her based on the specific aesthetic the movie wanted, and tried to make it somewhat reasonable enough for a Nickelodeon musical budget.
Tumblr media
(above: mood board of collected references, below: breakdown of how I wanted to portray Lagoona)
Tumblr media
I’ll start with her outfit. instead of the sporty but stylish beach vibe Lagoona usually has, the movie seemed to gear towards a shiny rainbow appearance, still with a bit of sportiness. I think they want her design to evoke whimsical bubbles and pearls, which they almost achieved, but they simply did not have enough to get that across. I’ve seen several people say how she looks like she’d be the daughter of the unicorn, not a sea monster. in my redesign, I stuck to the pearly pastel mermaid aesthetic but added more things that would make the vibe a little clearer: holographic tank top, pearls and pearlescent jewelry, holo platform sandals, holo hair tie, iridescent lip gloss, pearly rhinestones on iridescent makeup, and pastel “mermaid hair”. I probably could’ve eased up on the holo, but you can tell they wanted her to be colorful. these things at least all evoke whimsical pearliness, when all she used to have were a rainbow mesh shirt, drop earrings, silvery scale short tights, metal octopus bracelet, some other kinda chunky bracelet, and see-through iridescent boots. I love a metal octopus bracelet as much as the next guy but it feels like they threw things together.
the next thing to tackle was adding back more sea monster features. I’m not entirely sure why they didn’t want to paint her skin like other characters. even Frankie got to be greenish blue. maybe they were afraid it wouldn’t fit their new aesthetic for Lagoona? they did give her some features, I’ll give them that. she has purple nails made to look like claws, back leg fins, ear fins (though I didn’t actually notice these for the longest time), and at one point in the trailer she got to show off some CGI monster teeth. but the fins are small and blended into her human skin tone, making them hard to see and honestly kind of ill-fitting. of course, I remedied much of the issues here by giving her back her bluish green color and arm fins. I don’t know if she has sea monster teeth for the whole movie or just the CGI scenes, but if she doesn’t I made sure to show off my version. I also gave her webbed fingers, but honestly I’d let those slip—I can imagine giving someone special FX webbed fingers is probably frustrating and limiting, especially on a lower budget. as a final touch, I added little patches of scales. I figure they could maybe pull this off with just makeup like this:
Tumblr media
anyway, I guess that’s it then! I’m no fashion designer nor a costume designer, I just wished they were a little more inspired with Lagoona’s appearance (and everybody really, but I had to do my girl Lagoona a little justice). I understand if some things are unreasonable, things can be mixed and matched—like, if you don’t wanna paint her skin then maybe just the faint scales on certain areas. anything to still show that she is a sea monster, at a monster high school.

Movie Review | House of the Dead (Boll, 2003)
Tumblr media
Of the three Uwe Boll movies I’ve seen so far, I feel confident calling this his most enjoyable, and more importantly, the only one that consistently offers the bozo nu metal energy I want from crap from this era. The psychedelic opening credits, followed by the rave in the woods, are promising signs. Why the characters insist on going to a secluded island for their raving needs instead of a location near civilization, I do not know. I am not a raver. I have never raved.
Anyway, the movie enters the realm of quality by the half hour mark when we get Jurgen Prochnow, who like in Das Boot plays a man of the sea, chomping on a Cuban cigar while blasting away at zombies trying to crawl onto his boat. While I have not played the original game, I understand it’s a light gun shooter, and this sequence captures that essence perfectly. And the movie pretty much stays at this level for the remainder of its runtime, following this up almost immediately with an even more extravagant scene where all the characters walk alongside each other blasting zombies left and right. Listen, you might wonder why they never move in different directions or why the zombies seem to always leap out in similar patterns. You might wonder why we arbitrarily cut to Hero Mode 360 degree pans of the characters doing their special moves which somehow have no impact on the rest of the scene. You might wonder why the movie keeps cutting to footage from the actual game. And you’d be asking a lot of questions. Ever heard of the Kuleshov effect, dumbass?
It’s not enough that the scene is already assembled like a montage, it throws in an even more aggressively edited montage at the end, like some sort of puzzle box, all while some combination of techno and nu metal blares on the soundtrack. And Boll’s blocking is no better here than in his other movies, as the heroes are too often in the foreground and move along only a narrow plane of action, but if anything, it adds to the thrill ride nature of the movie. The only real knock I have against this is that aside from Prochnow, Clint Howard (acting as if in a completely different movie than Prochnow but no less enjoyable) and Ellie Cornell, the protagonists are all anonymous dipshits with few distinguishing qualities. The only one I could tell apart was the girl in the stars and stripes, by virtue of her unique outfit.
None of this is what you’d call conventionally exciting, tense or maybe even competent, but the constant incident and motion, of zombies popping up and getting blown away, meant that my synapses were firing pretty actively during this. I had a good enough time.

PiER -Allegro- Review
Hi again. This post will be a bit more minimal because I really just wanted to talk about this UTAU! She’s very new and I only came across her by chance. Her creator is from Mexico, and I rarely get to look at UTAUs from that region.
Tumblr media
*Art by Zakne
Hear a Sample of PiER -Allegro-
Bio
Name: PiER (pronounced like Pierre) Gender: Female Age: 21 Date of Birth: November 26th Height: 168cm (5' 6") Color: Yellow Character Item: 4-pointed star Personality: Friendly, active Species: Android Voice Provider/Character Designer: Zakne
Official Site
PiER has an official site on Wix. Here is a direct link to her download, hosted on Google Drive. The voicebank is 673 MB when fully unzipped and has fully generated frq files.
First Impressions
PiER has a lovely deep and mature voice with a Hispanic accent. Initially, opening her folder and seeing 12 pitches made this review seem daunting, which is why I’m making it short. A fun fact about her design I only noticed today is that her legs end at her knees and aren’t physically connected to her dark purple colored calves/boots. That feature is carried over into her MMD model too!
Configuration
PiER was recorded at F#3, A3, D#4, F#4, A4, and C5. She also includes a Soft append for every pitch stated beforehand. The only notable extras she has are end breaths. Her reclist is overall short and she has less than 1000 lines of oto for each pitch. The recordings were recorded at a very fast BPM and are generally consistent speed wise.
Overall, her tone is powerful, but the soft append helps to cover a bit more ground. I wish there had been noise removal applied, because sometimes the frqs and background noise really mess up results. I also wouldn’t recommend using resampler outside of her recommended ones for this reason.
Her oto generally follows a 1:3 ratio for preutterance/overlap but the numbers are 86:260, which I can’t say I’ve ever seen before. They work fine though, especially since her recordings are so fast. The only weird thing is that some of the - CV otos cut off way too much of the actual sound. There’s usually either too much or too little space put in front.
Her “da is pronounced too softly and almost sounds like “wa”. There are a few inconsistencies with how long the N consonants are too, with some being short and others being too long.
The Soft Append sounds best with fresamp and g-4 flags.
My recommended flags: F0Y99P90H0B20
My recommended resamplers: fresamp14, doppeltler
Final Thoughts
PiER has a beautiful, unique voice that will fulfill most users’ standard of quality. Did I mention this is also the voice actor’s FIRST UTAU voicebank?? At least listen to the covers made with her and you’ll see why I decided to talk about Pier ☆*: .。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆
Got any other UTAUs you want me to review? Send an ask!

I love tzapo's boots! What brand are they? My dog's are getting worn out so we're looking for some nice ones!
(Also the best time someone has commented on my dog's boots was them going "dog with da jordans" and then kept walking.
Tzapo wears Ruffwear Grip Trex boots. They're pricey but good quality. However, they are a bit notorious for rubbing on dew claws if your dog has them. Tzapo's were removed by the breeder at a young age so it's a moot point with him. To deal with the dew claw issue, you can use vet wrap. Or, you can use another high quality set that doesn't rub the same way.
@mandana-the-service-pup has some reviews on dog shoes she did with her SDiT, and I know one pair was reviewed there and it didn't have the dew claw issue at all.
(and that's amazing. I don't think anyone has referred to Tzapo's shoes that way yet lmao)

Book Review: “Child of the Prophecy” by Juliet Marillier
Tumblr media
Rating: 4/5
Title: Child of the Prophecy (A Filha da Profecia)
Author: Juliet Marillier
Portuguese Translator: Alice Miranda
Pages: 496
Review:
This book could have been a favourite if it wasn’t for the ending chapters. I was ready to look past all of the other flaws up until that point, but there were so many dumb and mean moments at the end that I couldn’t ignore those.
In many aspects this book felt like a YA fantasy story and it had many elements I have seen before. This follows the story of Fainne, who is the daughter of Niamh and granddaughter of Lady Oonagh. The plot revolves around Fainne, under the influence and abuse of her grandmother, going to Sevenwaters to try to make her family lose the isles, that would mean the end of the magical beings of the forest and the ruin of the family. So, Fainne has a sort of coming of age plot as she learns more about her magical powers and about herself and what path she should take given that she started to care about the people she was meant to destroy.
I liked to see different settings in this book. Fainne moves to different locations given her mission and I liked the different atmosphere of all of those. The plot in itself is not new and it’s predictable and at times repetitive. However, if you know me, you know I don’t care as much about the plot as I care about the characters and I did love two characters in this book. One of the characters I loved was Fainne herself. She was confused, insecure and morally gray. She is probably the most complex character in the series so far. She had a lot of room for growth and I love that in a character. She was controlled by her emotions even though she liked to pretend she was not and a conflicted character makes for an interesting one to me. The other character I loved was the love interest, Darragh. Also, I am really glad that for once Marillier gave me a couple with only one or two years apart. This is definitely my favourite couple in the series so far. Darragh and Fainne were childhood friends so I found the way they cared so much about each other believable. Darragh can tell how she is really feeling like any people that spend a lot of time together and deeply know each other do and Fainne kept telling stories about Darragh even when they were not together because he brought her calm and joy in her moments of need. Darragh is very loyal and determined and I always loved stories about travellers in a fantasy world so I was meant to like him.
Besides those two, I really liked the children in this book and the friendship they had with their cousin, Fainne. It was really sweet. I also liked to know more about the ancient beings in the forest and I loved the imagery of a mix of human and owl being that wears little red boots. I really liked the interactions between that being and Fainne too.
Even the characters that annoyed me so much in the former book, Son of the Shadows, were being more likeable in this one. That is, until the ending happened. Now, I am going to mention spoilers.
As I already wrote, what I mainly didn’t like about the book was the ending chapters. I was even interested in the small war part of the book. But then, Lady Oonagh decides to reveal herself before the victory and starts monologuing about all of her evil doings and Fainne’s too. I hated that. She not only felt dumb, but she felt like a cartoon character. But the cherry on top was the fact that Fainne’s family that this entire book has been trying to tell her that she is one of them don’t even bat an eye knowing that she will live isolated in order to save their precious isles and fulfil the prophecy. They seemed very concerned when it was all about Johnny, but Fainne? Who cares about Fainne? This to me shows that they cared for her as much as they cared about Niamh (which is nothing at all). The entire book they were pretending that they had loved Niamh and that she had many qualities and I was willing to forget book 2 and the character inconsistency, but then that happened. The good news is the characters are still consistently awful people. Then, there’s Ciaran who all this time has been training his daughter for this awful faith while he rejoins his awful family and they live happily ever after.
I am sure Marillier did not intend for me to hate the Sevenwaters family, but I really do. To them power and prophecy is above all so it makes sense they love Liadan, that has the most powers, and mistreated Niamh since she had none. However, the next books are about Aisling’s children and I like them so I will read them. They were intriguing and innocents in this mess.
I liked that Finbar died and it made sense. He hadn’t been actually living for many years now. He himself said he was only alive to see the prophecy fullfilled with Johnny so that ending was inevitable.
I am not really sure why Eammon protected Fainne, but I guess he realized that without her his obsessed revenge plans would never be fulfilled. That is part of another thing I liked. Eammon didn’t really love Fainne. There was only one love interest in this story. I am not a fan of the every man is in love with this one woman like it happened with Liadan so I am thankful for it being different in this book.
When it comes to Darragh being involved in the war, I don’t find it believable that he fought without training and survived. However, I am willing to let it pass since I was relieved and glad to see him alive at the end of the book. I was going to be so mad if he had died and the only romance I cared for didn’t have a happy ending while the others did.
The title in Portuguese is “Daughter of the Prophecy” instead of “CHILD of the Prophecy” so the twist never even got the chance to pretend to be a twist for Portuguese people. The reveals weren’t reveals given that I saw all of it coming even if not exactly how it would happen.
Overall, I really loved some parts of this book, but I was a little disappointed by the ending. Still, my love for Fainne and Darragh is stronger than the bad aspects of this book.
