When we break down, it all breaks down. That's just how it works. You can bend it, and if you make it hot enough you can bend it in a circle, but you can't break it. When you break it, it all breaks down until there's nothing unbroken. It starts here and now.

BEHOLD, MY RETURN! A post? On tumblr?? After months of literally nothing??? It’s true - I am not, in fact, mythicial 😎✨
SO here, have some ocs from aaaaages ago that I’ve re-fallen in love with and am determined to do some sort of story for!
Their names are Vaun and Vali Van Der Toorn, they’re twins (Vali is older by 3 minutes and does NOT let Vaun forget it), from a long line of respected morticians and graveyard wardens, they’re recently reunited after a couple years of distant/infrequent contact (in which a LOT has happened, particularly on Vaun’s end) and Vali is completely and utterly bamboozled by his nerd brother’s career turn, more at 10💜

‘It’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness, captain. That’s what they say.’
‘What?’ Vimes’ sudden rage was like a thunder-clap. ‘Who says that? When has that ever been true? It’s never been true! It’s the kind of thing people without power say to make it all seem less bloody awful, but it’s just words, it never makes any difference—’

The badge was important. Yes. It was shield-shaped. For protection. He’d thought about that, in the long nights in the darkness. It protected him from the beast, because the beast was waiting in the darkness of his head.
He’d killed werewolves with his bare hands. He’d been mad with terror at the time, but the beast had been there inside, giving him strength...
To go with my Guarding Dark design, I decided to give him some company in Sam Vimes’s head. Meet the Beast :)
I had the idea that the Beast is a great, hulking, shifting creature that never seems to be still. There’s a description of Vimes in Night Watch that’s stayed with me that’s: “You can see his muscles thinking for him. But he overrules them moment by moment!”
And that’s what this is. The Guarding Dark is the part of Sam Vimes that watches all the other parts. The Guarding Dark is the watchful eye, the shield that keeps the beast in check.

Anyone know a good like calligraphy style artist?
I wanna get my next two tattoos at some point this summer, but need to get the art figured out.
Here is the version I whipped up-- it’s the Summoning Dark and the Guarding Dark from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, specifically Thud! (Link to wiki about the signs) Based both off the official art but with changes due to how I pictured them when I read the book.
Plan is to get one on each arm -- probably on my wrists but maybe on my shoulders.
So anyone got any artist recs? Obviously I’ll pay commission/etc, I’d just appreciate if I could be pointed towards someone!
Update: Found someone on etsy and got the tattoo!

Okay but so much of the character of Sam Vimes is influenced by him being a former alcoholic tho. I don’t think it’s possible to discuss his unbreakable moral code without also discussing his addiction.
There is significant parallels between how he does not touch alcohol EVER starting from Men at Arms and every other ways that he holds himself accountable in the books.
One minute late to storytime with his child would be one minute too much, because once you excuse one minute late then you can excuse five, ten, and then fifteen minutes late. -> one drink is too many drinks because one drink « tends to arrive in five glasses ».
« If you do a bad thing for a good reason you’ll do it for a bad one », « If one part of the machine breaks down it all breaks down » and « who watches the watchman? Me. » are all different ways of saying that Vimes cannot allow himself to make even one exception in how he behaves. Will not, yes, and that’s very admirable, but this will not is the result of a CAN NOT because what would happen if he did is not, in fact, unthinkable. On the contrary, he knows very well what would happen if he did break one of his many rules, and this is exactly why he doesn’t break them.
« One drink is one too many » is basically the center of his character’s moral code. And it hits so hard because he’s not being rigid for the fun of it, he’s like that because he knows. It’s a sliding slope and he’s been on it and at the bottom of it and he KNOWS how quickly it slides.
And it’s so interesting to see how he applies that core concept to all other aspects of his life, cultimating into the guarding dark.
