In the past, Republicans have been more effective than we have been at using culture wars as a political weapon. However they just shot themselves in their gonads with the insane right wing conspiracy theories regarding Taylor Swift. If we do not use this like a cudgel against them repeatedly then we probably need to take a remedial Politics 101 class.
President Obama's former communications director Dan Pfeiffer gives us some perspective.
[B]y picking these culture war fights, Republicans demonstrate how disconnected they are from typical American life. While this whole Taylor Swift psyop thing has gotten some attention, most voters don’t know just how far from the mainstream Republicans have wandered. Therefore, it’s our job to tell them. Two tips for doing so: First, when taking on an extremist faction, particularly one with authoritarian leanings, it’s always helpful to remind the public that this faction is a minority in the country. This helps isolate the threat and rob them of their power. It’s also empowering to the rest of us to be reminded that we are the majority. We are not in this fight alone, and we are joined by most of our fellow citizens. Second, having a bizarre meltdown over Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, and the Super Bowl is fucking weird and Americans don’t elect fucking weirdos. Just ask Ron DeSantis, whose candidacy was doomed the minute people discovered that he eats pudding with his fingers. The Right picking fights with Bud Light is weird. Their opposition to vaccines (which is why they hate Kelce) is weird. Their obsession with trans kids is weird. The fact that the Right focuses on all of the wrong and weirdest things makes them unrelatable to most people. In 2016, Trump re-appropriated Richard Nixon’s racially tinged “silent majority” language. In 2024, he is leading an extremist minority of weirdos.
Remind people whenever you can slip it into a conversation, and not just with fellow Dems, that Republicans are extremist weirdos who are far out of the American mainstream; the GOP's wacko preoccupation with Taylor Swift should be cited. And do not be squeamish about repetition. Repetition is your ally – ask any successful advertiser.

This.
They want to wear us down. They want us to stay home and not vote in November. It makes things so much easier for them.
Get mad, stay mad, fight back. Stay engaged.

“One of the problems for republicans is the people who make their ads have had their brains pickled but the right wing media so they constantly make ads that are relevant to a world created by the right wing media and not the world experienced by the voters they need.”

Getting to see them love filled me with so much joy. The dopamine I got from that. The pure adoration I felt for all of them. It was strong.
The best part of Nashville was seeing how much love and respect people have for these guys. A stranger who sat next to me during the show said she drove 7 hours from Virginia because she wanted to see Lovett and the boys in person and of course Al Gore.
The standing ovations the boys got. The energy in the crowd. It was fucking amazing. I wish I could have shared that with everyone in this wonderful community. The chemistry between those men is even more present in person. They flowed together.
They were beautiful. I will absolutely be seeing them again, assuming they continue to do this. I have so much I want to say to them

Making Lunacy Seem ... Normal?
Is the upcoming election in the hands of the media?  Sometimes it seems so.  The following piece by Dan Pfeiffer in SubStack gives me food for thought.  Doesn’t the ‘free press’ include the responsibility for truth, for honesty, for unbiased reporting? Why is the Press Making Trump Seem More Normal? Believe it or not, much of the political press has an inadvertent pro-Trump bias By Dan…

Trump’s continued political resilience has caused people to lose control of their faculties. The stakes of this election are so damned high that our anxiety has infected the political chattering class with brain worms. Of course, Donald Trump getting convicted will not make him more popular. A felony conviction is not a net positive. I don’t care what Trump or any clout-chasing wannabe pundit says.

NO great outcome was possible in the debt limit negotiations with Republicans. But Biden ended up with one which was far less bad than many people had feared.
Even though this crisis was provoked by House Republicans, many voters would have blamed Biden if the US had defaulted. As it turned out, Biden ended up with just a little dust on his jacket while McCarthy ends up with a self-made shit sandwich. 💩
Dan Pfeiffer was an aide to President Obama and has witnessed GOP blackmail close up. He writes...
Let’s be clear, this is shitty public policy foisted on the nation by a radical Republican House willing to blow up the economy and cause millions of jobs to vanish. Efforts to deal with deficits that do not include asking the wealthy and corporations to pay what they owe are cruel and wholly unserious. The tightening of access to aid for the most vulnerable Americans serves no purpose other than performative cruelty to appease the MAGA base.
But this could have been way worse in so many ways. The devil is very much in the details, but it seems like President Biden and his team outplayed McCarthy.
Republicans like to portray Joe Biden as doddering and totally out of it; never mind that Trump is only slightly younger and shows obvious signs of hysteria. But even if you don't grade Biden on a curve, he still comes out ahead of the GOP.
The far right MAGA fanatics absolutely hate the deal.
Jordan Weissmann at Semafor writes...
Afterwards, a quick consensus formed among much of the right and left: Republicans got blanked.
The agreement would temporarily freeze a portion of non-defense spending, while temporarily tightening the food stamp program’s work requirements for childless adults, and enacting modest changes to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
The early details prompted furious reactions from members of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus, who’d hoped to extract vastly more sweeping budget cuts and changes to the federal safety net in return for hiking the borrowing limit.
[ ... ]
As Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo put it, it’s a bit like they walked into a Denny’s with a gun, demanded all the money in the cash register, and left with a breakfast instead. Extraordinary threats at the start, an ordinary transaction at the finish.
While this was not a great deal for anybody, Speaker McCarthy will likely suffer the most because of it.
Timothy Noah at The New Republic writes...
When this debt ceiling mess is concluded, Biden will stay president at least until January 20, 2025. McCarthy, I predict, will be gone by Christmas, and possibly before Labor Day. Should he somehow hang on to his speakership, he’ll be so diminished that you’ll barely notice he’s still there. He won’t be able to get anything done. So either way, McCarthy is toast.
McCarthy will probably have to rely on Democratic votes for the debt deal to pass. That will infuriate the far right even more.
Let's remember that one of McCarthy's concessions to the far right during the marathon election for Speaker in January was to make it possible for any member to introduce a motion to "vacate the chair". So any GOP members dissatisfied with the debt ceiling agreement could theoretically topple McCarthy – if Democrats decided to go along.
So while Republicans make a public spectacle of themselves, Dems can stock up on popcorn and collect crazy soundbites from Republicans who are more interested in nihilism than in governance.

Words of Wisdom ...
What I am about to share with you is just over two weeks old, so some things, such as the House Speaker fiasco, are a bit dated, but the tone and point of this newsletter from Robert Hubbell dated October 19th, remain as relevant today as they were two weeks ago.  Hubbell is intelligent and insightful, and I found his newsletter encouraging.  No, it didn’t convince me that all will end well, but…
