Thought it might ammuse you my brain parsed “ Palladium” as “ Philadelphia” for a second
(With reference to this post here.)
I'm not aware that there was ever a tabletop RPG adaptation of Philadelphia, but there was definitely one of Dallas.
Tumblr media
(For all that it resembles a parody of contemporary niche-audience indie games, this one came out way back in 1980, and was only the second tabletop RPG based on a licensed IP, after Heritage Models' 1978 tabletop RPG adaptation of Star Trek. Interestingly, it's very possibly the first tabletop RPG ever to include a robust "social combat" system, anticipating the later popularity of such mechanics by some twenty years. Its publication bombed so hard that it's been cited as one of the reasons its publisher went broke two years later.)

Flashlight: Dallas
In this week's Flashlight, we explore the game Dallas, based on the TV series from the 1970s and 1980s! Reilly leaves in a hot-mic moment, Jake tries to sound knowledgeable about buying horses, and neither one of us can sustain a Texas accent.
Here's the link to SPI Wargame Resources, where you can find the ruleset for Dallas if you really want to try playing it. We also mention a few other old-school TTRPGs based on the hottest IP of the early 1980s:
Here's a MemoryAlpha article on the original Star Trek TTRPG and here's a (still-active!) forum for it.
Here's a catalogue of the sourcebooks for the Indiana Jones TTRPG - which are apparently very hard to find today.
Here's a review of the Judge Dredd TTRPG which is also very hard to find today.
Here's an archive of the Marvel Super Heroes TTRPG, with a bunch of character profiles as well.
Here's a modern review for the original Doctor Who TTRPG.

It was bound to happen eventually: this week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we discuss the disaster that was Dallas: The Television Role-Playing Game. How did SPI screw up a game based on a license of a TV show at the height of its powers? A game that launched during an unprecedented eight month media frenzy about the show? The world just wasn’t ready. Which is a shame, because the character and narrative based system was actually unlike just about anything else available at the time.

This freaky random art piece from the Dallas Museum of Art would make an excellent gothic-style monster for my “Curse of Strahd” players. It would probably fit into any Souls game too.
Tumblr media
I imagine they'd move and make sounds similar to the "Twin Victims" monster from Silent Hill 4. On a side note, fuck those things.

Ever heard of a Mega Game? You have? Well, cool ‘cause I haven’t til recently when some friends started putting one together! For those like me who aren’t in the know, a mega game is an event where a large amount of people (approx 30+ all at once!) play a single game, generally some sort of board game or tabletop RPG.
My friends are putting together an event to play the Game of Thrones mega game Aegon’s Conquest! This is an all day event, with nonstop gameplay!
It will take place November 10th in Dallas, and tickets are on sale now!
Check out the ticket page for more info, hope to see some of y’all there!

SO I REALLY LIKE THE SAKANA RPG AU...
So much so that I’m making two playlists for it. One 8-track playlist like the other ones I’ve made, and one that functions more like a soundtrack. If you want, this functions as a DND/tabletop soundtrack for a generic fantasy setting. There are no words (for the most part), just some good music! Click through if you want to see me ramble about instrumental music.
1. Mucca Pazza - Subtle Frenzy [L.Y.A]
I like how tentatively this starts off. You’re some low-level adventurers, wandering around and looking for a job to do or a quest to go on. Life is still in that weird in-between stage where you’re crossing over from normalcy to heroism.
2. Red Baraat - Chaal Baby [Chaal Baby]
It’s your first little skirmish! Nothing’s going as planned!
3. The Westerlies - New Berlin, New York [The Westerlies]
Damn, you actually won that fight? Maybe you’re adventurers after all. This song is about figuring out your place in this weird RPG AU. Maybe you gained some new party members or something.
4. J. S. Back - Little Fugue in G Minor [as performed by the Canadian Brass]
This piece always makes me think of magic. It’s Taisei and Jiro’s montage for learning new spells.
5. Gustav Holst - Jupiter [from The Planets Suite, Op. 32] [as performed by the NDR Radiophilharmonie]
This is my all-time favorite piece of orchestral music, especially the tender middle section around 3:15. According to Wikipedia, this movement was supposed to be the solid center of the suite, with the movements around it mirroring each other. So naturally I made it the middle (?) song in this mix. And it’s so big and grand. There’s a lot going on at this point in the story.
6. Joe Hisaishi - Asian Dream Song [Piano Stories]
Another one of my all-time favorites. It kind of fulfills my ballad clause. Whatever romance you want to imagine into Sakana RPG, put it here. Me, I’m filling this space with Taidai as usual.
7. Ron Nelson - Lauds [as performed by the Dallas Wind Symphony]
Lauds is a fight song, but it’s based on the holiest time of the day in Catholic teachings. Jiro’s big boss battle!
8. Phamtom Regiment - Into the Light [2010 competitive season]
Okay, I can’t skip a drum corps show in the soundtrack mix. This show is about death and dying, but it’s also about ends of all sorts. Whatever end you imagine, and I hope it’s a tearjerker ending, that’s what this is. It’s got all the good stuff: space for a tender moment beforehand, fight music, and a grand ending.

4: Three Things I love: Learning new things, science fiction, collaborative games (like tabletop RPGs!)
7: My Best Friend: If we’re excluding my partner (@sithwitch13), that would be the very awesome and talented @lurkz!
49: Am I excited for anything?: Well some friends are here and we’re going to go see Wonder Woman again, that’s exciting. Also excited about some pending news this week in videogames (E3 news for Anthem and Fallout 4 VR go!). Always excited to hear about new technologies and stories, but nothing in particular right at the moment I guess.
140: Where do I want to live when I’m older: I would prefer to live elsewhere while I’m no older than I already am, haha. Right now been trying to get from here (Houston, TX) up to Dallas/Fort Worth for some personal/professional growth reasons. I’d like to retire somewhere like Colorado, up in the Rocky foothills, or abroad somewhere nice.

This is the Dallas roleplaying game box set. Yes, you read that right. Further proof, if you needed it, that no one had a clue what they were doing in the early days of roleplaying games.
For you youngins, Dallas was a late night TV soap opera about an endlessly feuding family – the Ewings – in the Texas oil business. It premiered in 1978 and ran until 1991. It was an immediate sensation. One episode from 1980, the same year this game came out, remains the second highest rated prime time show ever.
The Dallas RPG was famed wargame maker SPI’s attempt to capitalize on the TV show’s success while introducing RPGs to a new audience outside the hobby’s well-established niche and they bet big, publishing 80,000 of the boxes. It was a dismal failure.
It is a strange game, designed by legendary wargame designer James F. Dunnigan. Characters are pre-generated and, obviously, based on the ones from the show. There are a number of statistics, each with a dual value (so, you can be good at seducing but bad at resisting seduction) and conflict is mostly resolved by comparing them (dice come into play if the opposing numbers are too close). It isn’t reaaaally an RPG by the definition of its era, though you might find some shared DNA in modern storytelling games. It feels a bit more like a rudimentary, narrative-driven card to me, though.
Its a strange one. SPI was out of business by 1982, thanks to a dirty deal with TSR, and I can’t help but wonder if Dallas put the company in the dire financial straights that led to its demise.

Out of the ashes of Bioware’s Shadow Realms comes co-op dungeon crawler Breach
It’s always fun getting to play the villain. Setting traps, unleashing monsters, and causing trouble for the do-gooders - who could resist? In tabletop gaming, playing as the Game Master has the benefit of seeing your friends unknowingly walk into a mischievous layout that will undoubtedly cause them grief. QC Games has been inspired by that dramatic irony, and has transported it into the virtual realm with its bombastic dungeon crawler, Breach. Back in 2014, QC Games CEO Dallas Dickinson was working on a similar game at Bioware. Shadow Realms was also a 4v1 multiplayer game with one player taking on the role of Shadowlord to menace the other team. Unfortunately, it was cancelled so the team could focus on other larger projects. Breach takes that premise and carries it deep into the dungeon, melding technology, magic, and myths in fast-paced co-op. Thanks to an open class system, you can mix and match abilities to create a unique hero that suits your personal play style. Or switch sides completely and play as the Veil Demon, a malevolent spirit whose goal is to wreak havoc on the party, dropping traps and monsters as they progress. “A lot of the team’s background is that we've been making online RPGs for a long time,” Dickinson tells me. “The best content in those games was the dungeons and the co-op. The Veil Demon is there to make the gameplay different every time. You could run the exact same dungeon five times in a row and it will never play out the same way.” Read more:  Learn your terminology with our PC gaming glossary from https://www.pcgamesn.com/breach/breach-qc-games-interview
