SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. Later, Gary became part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and was one of its first presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

It has been reported that a Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) between Finland and the United States could be ready for signing at the civil servant level as early as this week. Under its terms, it would, for example, allow for the construction of US military infrastructure in Finland, advance storage of materials, and for US soldiers to arrive at shorter notice for training and exercises in Finland.
Helsingin Sanomat reported that Jussi Saramo, the chair of the parliamentary group of the Left Alliance, and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, says his party is not yet ready to support the agreement on the basis of the information it currently has.
"We don't know anything about it, as far as what is being concretely agreed upon," Saramo said, referring, for example, to the areas that will be made available for use by US troops in Finland.
According to Saramo, the Left Alliance is also interested in information about the weapon systems that could be placed in Finland. He told the paper that weapons of mass destruction and nuclear weapons should be banned in the text, even though Finnish law already prohibits bringing nuclear weapons into the country.
"I am most pessimistic about legal jurisdiction on Finnish soil. In any case, we are going to give up some of our sovereignty regarding US [military] people who are here," Saramo stated.
The Left Alliance was in government when the DCA agreement negotiations began last year.
Saramo added that he does not oppose or support the agreement.
"Of course, since we're in Nato it's good that we created structures with which Nato's undisputed largest military power can more smoothly help us if necessary, and we can train together here," Saramo said.
It has been speculated that many of the US forces that will train in Finland under the terms of the DCA will be stationed in the far north of the country.
Helsingin Sanomat interviewed locals in Rovaniemi to find out how they feel about the prospect of a regular American military presence in the area.
The paper summed up the responses by writing, "US soldiers are welcome in the north just like other foreigners. Local businesses will get more customers at the same time, but they'll have to know how to behave themselves when enjoying the nightlife."
Covid risks
The Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare (THL) has recommended a new coronavirus booster for anyone over the age of 65, people 18 and over who belong to medical risk groups, and anyone over the age of 12 who is severely immunocompromised.
Aamulehti writes that the latest booster became available in the Pirkanmaa region on Monday. Tero Harjuntausta, the assistant chief physician of the Pirkanmaa welfare county, told the paper that hundreds of shots are being given daily, but that there may be a wait of several weeks to get an appointment, and in some locales the next free slots for a booking are not until December.
Harjuntausta, said that everyone in recommended groups should now book an appointment for a booster vaccination. "Now we are at the point where the number of coronavirus infections has started to rise," he pointed out.
On Monday, there were 39 patients with Covid in specialised hospital care in the Pirkanmaa region, with some in intensive care.
Harjuntausta noted that for the average person, a coronavirus infection is much like a regular bout of flu. Vaccinations are primarily intended to protect risk groups.
Migri hiring more staff
The Finnish Immigration Service Migri will be expanding staff by about 150 next year, the Uutissuomalainen news group reported.
According to Migri Director General Ilkka Haahtela, the additional resources will be allocated to speeding up permit processing, primarily for international protection, students and employees.
In addition to that, more resources are to be channelled into supervision and removal from the country.
Haahtela also said that Migri is undertaking an efficiency programme and organizational reform.
"We definitely need to make our own operations more efficient. The permits that are granted should be handled quickly, reliably and securely. If a person receives a negative permit decision or a permit is revoked, then the return from Finland should take place quickly," he said.
Waste and pay
Ilta-Sanomat tells readers that Suan Aahaan, a Thai restaurant in Sipoo, is battling food waste with a nearly 12-euro surcharge levied on customers who throw away food they take from the buffet table.
"I have signs everywhere in the restaurant that I show them before they pay. If they don't like it, they can leave," says restaurant owner and chef Vaw Myllynen.
Regular customers are already familiar with the practice, and Myllynen makes sure the policy is quite clear to first-time diners in the restaurant, as well.
"In addition, I explain the problem very loudly to those who look intent on wasting food. When I talk to them loudly, they start to feel embarrassed when the other customers look at them," Myllynen explained.
Myllynen said that the amount of waste from the buffet has clearly decreased and in practice the extra charge has only been imposed two or three times.
Ilta-Sanomat added that a few other restaurants in Helsinki have started the same practice, as has at least one in Tampere where diners may end up paying as much as 30 euros extra for a meal if they waste food from the buffet.
Myllynen thinks that many buffet restaurants may be afraid of bad reviews or comments online if they start charging customers for wasted food.
"It doesn't worry me. I would say that 95 percent of our customers have been satisfied and understand it."

Tumblr media
About: Iron-Manganese based alloy Fe-Mn (having Mn composition of more than 29% by weight) is a promising biodegradable metallic implant which exhibits single austenitic phase (non-magnetic form of iron) with MRI compatibility. The alloy also showed a degradation rate in the range of 0.14-0.026 mm per year in the simulated body fluid, which means that the Fe-Mn alloy exhibits mechanical integrity for 3-6 months and completely disappears from the body in 12-24 months. The newly developed Fe-Mn based alloys are suitable for biodegradable stent and orthopedic implant applications.  Important Info : Significance: These Biodegradable materials (Fe, Mg, Zn, and polymer) can participate in the healing process and then degrade gradually by maintaining the mechanical integrity without leaving any implant residues in the human body. These are better alternatives to currently used metallic implants which remain permanently in the human body and can cause long-term side effects like systemic toxicity, chronic inflammation, and thrombosis.  Source : All India Radio ( Science & Technology ) Read UPSC Current affairs and Daily News Analysis from Best IAS Academy in Bangalore Vignan IAS Academy Third tranche of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’: Agriculture sector gets ₹1.5-lakh-cr booster

Proposed steps to make SSC more attractive: A one-year training course will be given to SSC officers while exiting after 14 years. The courses can be professional or technical courses such as MBA or M.Tech. to give the skills for a second employment as a civilian. About 25%-30% of the SSC officers would be granted Permanent Commission (PC) so that they are kept motivated and they compete to get PC. The rest can leave. Previous cases: The previous most famous case of coronavirus infection among cats, big or domestic, has been that of four-year-old Nadia, a Malayan tiger at New York’s Bronx Zoo. She tested positive in April 2020. Within weeks, a few more tigers and lions at the zoo tested positive. Among domestic cats, the first known infection happened in Belgium. Recent research: The key finding in recent research is that cats can be asymptomatic while carrying the virus. Also, all the cats went on to clear the virus. The latest findings suggest that cats may be capable of becoming infected when exposed to people or other cats positive for SARS-CoV-2. Other researchers have previously suggested reasons why cats may be vulnerable to infection from humans: feline and human cells have similar ACE2 receptors, which are enzymes that facilitate the coronavirus’s entry in the body. The general view remains that a cat is more likely to get Covid-19 from a human, than a human getting it from a cat.  Source : Indian Express ( Health ) Read UPSC Current affairs and Daily News Analysis from Best IAS Academy in Bangalore Vignan IAS Academy NATIONAL DENGUE DAY On the occasion of National Dengue Day (May 16), Health Ministry has listed a series of simple measures through which Dengue can be prevented.

Just for fun: SLBP Mecha Anime AU
I’ve watched some mecha anime over the years and HOO BOY I love em so much! I love how the setting is ALWAYS political intrigue mixed with warfare....good stuff.
Anyway, I thought it’d be cool to visualize an AU where the lords + MC pilot mechas, so here it is! I’m taking a LOT of creative and historical liberties here, so don’t take this too seriously. Loooong self-indulgent post below:
Background:
In an alternate history where Sengoku Era Japan’s warfare is characterized by mechas and droids instead of swords and spears, several clans fight for the power to unite the country under one name. MC still mourns for her father, a mecha developer who died in the last war under the Oda Clan ten years ago, She vows never to get involved with battle and tries to live a peaceful life.
One day, the magistrate forces an able-bodied member of every family to join the war and she enlists in her brother’s place. Her once-halcyon days turn into bloodshed, and the only thing keeping MC moving forward is her will to protect her family.
She is enlisted into the Sanada Clan and they initially berate her for being a subpar combat pilot until they realize she has her father’s talent in mecha development.
Nobunaga:
Leader of the Oda Clan and currently the leader of the most powerful mecha army in Japan.
Pilots the Devil King, a combat mecha that specializes in rallying, artillery, aerial combat, and bladed attacks.
Despite owning one of the best offensive mecha units, he mostly gives orders from Kiyosu, the Oda Clan’s main flagship.
Is not only an ace pilot, but also a genius tactician for destroying clans when his army was still made up of ragtag fighters and amateur mecha units. Nobunaga literally clawed his way up to power and he is respected and feared for it.

Mitsuhide:
Nobunaga’s right-hand man and overseer of all logistics and operations in the Oda Army.
Pilots the Light of Honor, a sentry mecha that specializes in energy shields, artillery, rallying, and fortification.
His main job as a pilot is to guard Nobunaga or oversee the army under Nobunaga’s command.
Is respected in the clan for being both a great pilot and an even greater diplomat.

Yukimura:
General of the Sanada army and retainer to the Takeda Clan.
Pilots the Scarlet Sword, a combat mecha that specializes in bladed attacks, land combat, hand-to-hand combat, and mobility.
Is known as an ace pilot for having a natural affinity with mecha piloting. He is a better fighter than strategist, and he usually acts on Nobuyuki’s or Shingen’s command.
Thinks of MC as fragile at first because of her bad combat piloting, but apologizes (and admires her) later on when she reprograms his mecha for aerial combat.

Mecha model used: Guyale, Knight’s & Magic
Saizo:
A mercenary working for the Sanada Clan and a master assassin.
Pilots Utsusemi, a stealth mecha that specializes in espionage, terrain adaptation, guerrilla warfare, and mobility.
His mecha is unique because it’s programmed to be synchronized to Saizo’s exact combat pattern and movements. However, it’s also dangerous to pilot because any damage to the mecha will also directly damage Saizo.
Is suspicious at MC’s sudden appearance in the Sanada Clan at first. When she jumps in front of him (in her scrappy mecha no less) to protect him from an energy blast barrage, he starts to trust her more.
Tumblr media
Mecha model used: EVA-03, Neon Genesis Evangelion
Masamune:
Leader of the Date Clan and master of mecha flight proficiency.
Pilots the One-Eyed Dragon, a combat mecha that specializes in aerial combat, atmospheric flight, projectile weaponry, and endurance.
Oshu is home to Neo Jade, a mineral known for being a very powerful superconductor, which is valuable for mecha units. Oshu exports about 80% of the country’s Neo Jade, but other clans want to monopolize it to gain more power.
His mecha’s wings can also be used as shields.
Tumblr media
Mecha model used: Hekiryugo, CROSS ANGE
Kojuro:
Masamune’s right-hand man and overseer of the Date Clan’s daily clerical affairs.
Pilots the Dragon’s Claws, a support mecha that specializes in rallying, energy shields, mechanized armor, and fortification.
Mostly takes care of matters in the Date’s main flagship, Yonezawa.
When he does appear on the field, he rarely ever leaves Masamune’s side on the off-chance someone tries to assassinate him.
Tumblr media
Mecha model used: Prussian Blue Star, Iron Saga
Hideyoshi:
Retainer of the Oda Clan and head of their sub-flagship, Nagahama.
Pilots the Sun Wukong, a sentry mecha that specializes in fortification, mechanized armor, rallying, and endurance.
He used to be a mere foot soldier piloting a scrappy mecha until Nobunaga saw his talent for tactics and diplomacy.
He and his retainers (Kiyomasa, Masanori, etc.) fight efficiently as one unit.
Tumblr media
Mecha model used: Goku, Nobunaga the Fool
Inuchiyo:
Retainer of the Oda clan and general of the Oda Clan’s vanguard.
Pilots the Spear of Arako, a combat mecha specializing in land combat, hand-to-hand combat, bladed attacks, and endurance.
Is an ace pilot and is feared for his mastery of his mecha spear.
When he hears the MC is forced to enlist, he vehemently tries to veto the magistrate’s decision. Unfortunately, he couldn’t keep his childhood friend out of the war, so he decides to support her by protecting her in his own way.
Tumblr media
Mecha model used: Cypher, Cyber Troopers Virtual-On
Ieyasu:
Leader of the Tokugawa Clan and master of artillery.
Pilots the Golden Archer, a combat mecha that specializes in artillery, aerial combat, energy shields, and atmospheric flight.
Is currently in an alliance with the Oda Clan for their superior army and the Date Clan for their Neo Jade supply, but is patiently waiting for an opportunity to establish his own independent power.
He programmed his own mecha to have a 0.000005% margin of error when aiming, so his projectile aim is almost perfectly accurate.
Tumblr media
Mecha model used: Artemis, Iron Saga
Mitsunari:
Hideyoshi’s retainer and a master tactician.
Pilots the Scholar, a sentry mecha that specializes in energy shields, fortification, mechanized armory, and terrain analysis.
Is one of the best tacticians in the Oda Army and is one of the heads of drafting the battle map.
He purposely chose a sentry mecha instead of a combat mecha because he believes he could protect Hideyoshi should the need arise.
Tumblr media
Mecha model used: Vassago, Iron Saga
Kenshin:
Leader of the Uesugi Clan and master of bladed combat.
Pilots the God of War, a combat mecha that specializes in bladed attacks, land combat, rallying, and endurance.
Arguably one of the best pilots among the lords, but doesn’t seem like it outside his mecha because of his seemingly happy-go-lucky personality.
Becomes absolutely unstoppable when he enters a battle trance.
Tumblr media
Mecha model used: Ikaruga, Knight’s & Magic
Shingen:
Leader of the Takeda Clan and Nobunaga’s main rival for Divine Rule.
Pilots the Tiger of Kai, a combat mecha that specializes in land combat, bladed attacks, rallying, and mobility.
Though the Takeda Army’s mecha units are slightly behind in terms of specs in comparison to the Oda Army, their morale is unparalleled. Virtually everyone in the Takeda Army is willing to die for Shingen.
Lately, piloting his mecha is taking a toll on his health, but he’s not about to tell anyone about it anytime soon...
Tumblr media
Mecha model used: Fuurin Kazan, Nobunaga the Fool
Shigezane:
Retainer of the Date Clan and head of the Date’s communications and logistics.
Pilots the Courageous, a sentry mecha that specializes in mechanized armor, rallying, energy shields, and artillery.
He serves as the Date’s public relations officer and morale booster.
He used to pilot a combat mecha, but his old hand injury couldn’t take the strain.
Tumblr media
Mecha model used: Taylor Star, Iron Saga
Nobuyuki:
Heir to the Sanada Clan and the army’s chief tactician.
Pilots the Legacy, a support mecha that specializes in aerial transport, fuel transfer, emergency repairs, and rallying.
Doesn’t really fight on the front lines in comparison to Yukimura, but is a very talented tactician and chooses to delegate tasks in the main flagship, Ueda.
That said, he can pilot combat mechas (and is actually pretty good at it). It’s just that he prefers to be behind-the-scenes for the most part.
Tumblr media
Mecha model used: Syrphime, Knight’s & Magic
MC:
A fledgling pilot who everyone initially looks down on for being a terrible combat pilot, but later on, they realize her true talent lies in mecha development and optimization, similar to her father.
Pilots the Sakura, a support mecha she developed herself. It started out as a scrappy mecha she was forced to use as a foot soldier until she modded it to fit her better. It specializes in aerial transport, fuel transfer, mecha repairs, and flight sequences.
Spends most of her time outside her mecha trying to repair other units in the army.
Is honestly scared of fighting and war, but will not hesitate to jump into the line of fire to protect her loved ones.

Hihi all except warmongers, 大家好! Because we are limiting social activities in order to prevent ICU and oxygen numbers from surging, I've been using precious weekends to relax, work towards exercise goals, keep abreast of current affairs AND also, reading motivational quotes. The theme I've decided to focus on this week is: humility.
A Google search revealed this meaningful gem, too good not to share.
Tumblr media
Confidence is great and all of us should work towards possessing healthy levels of it. Since when has the line between confidence and arrogance been so blurred though? Both Kenneth - a friend and business associate - and I consider ourselves fortunate to be relatively comfortable, financially speaking. And we're compelled to do more for others in society.
Many elderly in society are not highly educated; this is so even amongst my relatives. Earlier on in the pandemic, I taught them how to properly wear a surgical mask so that it sits nicely on the face without wide open gaps, over and over, until they got it. I did the same with Douglas' mum too, during my weekly catch ups with them, as well as with a few older coffee shop staff who I gave surgical masks to when I saw them wearing cloth ones.
Today, whilst we're certainly not panicking about the Delta variant after being fully vaccinated, I still try to spread awareness to colleagues and friends so they can also better protect their elderly family members. There is certainly no doubt that many nations will have to open up sooner or later; it is how this is being done as well as the message conveyed to citizens that will lay the path towards spikes and surges in ICU numbers or a flatter, smoother curve as countries and citizens reengage with one another.
What is the difference in citizens' mindsets and corresponding behaviours which can make or break a country's healthcare system? Well, after watching some countries' attempts to restart their economies (no judgment since this situation is so new to everyone), we might want to ask ourselves: Are we going back to the old normal or shifting towards a new normal?
If we go back to the old normal, it's quite akin to treating covid as though it never existed, isn't it? I won't even delve into this because it doesn't make any sense.
What we're doing (on a personal basis, not speaking for my country or other citizens) is gradually shifting to a new normal, which means yes, we need to move on from the pandemic, we need to reintegrate ourselves in society in a gradual way with safety measures intact to protect ourselves, such as constant reminders to wear our masks after finishing our meals if we wish to remain in restaurants and chat with friends.
Another example? Storing my masks in a Ziploc bag when I take a sip or 2 of coffee at the office or during lunch break then wearing them again after finishing my meal or a drink. Using fresh masks daily instead of reusing them is another safe behaviour we encourage. Are we able to go out of our homes instead of being recluses out of fear of the virus? Sure we can. When others come into contact with us, they're also reminded to be more vigilant.
Tumblr media
With booster shots now being discussed internationally, reopening the economy isn't about either going full swing or forever closing ourselves off globally. I think most educated people are able to see this - or at least humble enough to not be too dichotomous about the situation we face. A gradual one which allows us to provide booster jabs to those who need them will enable us to achieve the balance between lives and business.
Otherwise, if we're pushed to reopen more quickly than we're ready for, when it is your elderly or loved ones or government officials who become casualties, vaccinated or not, much as I don't want to, at the time I'll say it. I told you so. Between arrogance and humility, I know which one my conscience chooses.
Till the next time, 下次见!

The case for vaccines and the shadow rule of the minority
Currently, Melbourne is in the midst of a sixth coronavirus lockdown, which was announced at the start of August, less than two weeks after the fifth lockdown at the end of July and originally scheduled for 7 days only to be extended twice (potential extension notwithstanding) with a curfew slapped on the top of it. How’s that “7 days to stop the spread” working for you guys, huh? Look, to be honest, I’m getting sick of these lockdowns and I’m sure many other people are, but lately, people and governments are touting vaccines as a panacea to end lockdowns, much to the point that they are teetering on forcing people to get vaccinated. Personally, I don’t think this approach is as good as other people might see it and I’ll explain why through my understanding.
Development of the coronavirus vaccines have been expedited due to the situation of this pandemic, with the first (mainstream) vaccine, namely the Pfizer vaccine, being approved by the UK, the US and Switzerland in December 2020. While trials have been conducted on such vaccines, they essentially had to be rushed through in a year. Never mind the fact that we have to get two doses instead of one to be “fully” vaccinated, I’m hearing that the efficacy of the existing vaccines are under question, particularly due to variant strains such as the Delta strain (that mutated in India because fuck political correctness) and that we potentially may have to get booster shots (like the flu, get it?) if the virus were to mutate even more. Combined with the potential side effects of these vaccines, I don’t necessarily feel ready to get one at this point in time. Keep in mind that the vaccines were created to deal with a virus that originated in China.
The absurdity of vaccine passports and mandates
There are four stages in Australia’s national reopening strategy and the second stage is expected to be triggered when double vaccination (2 doses) rates reach 70%. Last year, during the second wave, the strategy was to “flatten the curve” and achieve zero daily cases, but this year, it is beginning to prove impossible with the Delta strain. As daily case numbers continue to rise, Victoria and New South Wales have decided to abandon that goal and instead focus on buying time so they can get more people vaccinated. New South Wales has drafted a roadmap out of lockdown that involves more freedoms for those who are double vaccinated, while Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has stated that they are going to “lock out people who are not vaccinated and can be” and are trialling some new rules in regional Victoria. In both states, the enforcement of these new rules will depend on the use of a vaccine passport.
In my opinion, vaccine passports are not a good idea, particularly in some settings due to practicality reasons. If vaccine passports have to be implemented, then they should mostly be implemented in settings where you have to buy tickets, such as sporting events, indoor/outdoor entertainment events/venues and long-distance transportation (airports and train stations etc). In other settings, vaccine passports aren’t so practical; in hospitality settings, if only vaccinated people can eat inside while unvaccinated people can only buy takeaway and wait outside, there is a risk that one could infect the other. Same in shopping centres - the NSW roadmap states that unvaccinated people can only access essential services, so if other stores are only open to the vaccinated, then the two groups could still come into contact. And what about outside gatherings? I think you get where I’m going here.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has stated that any business has every right to deny entry or service to those who are unvaccinated, with bootlicking NPCs around the world seemingly parroting this point as well. Australia’s anti-discrimination laws make it illegal to discriminate against someone based on race, age, gender or disability (health status?), so why are they suddenly creating another discrimination category and justifying it for the sake of public health because there just so happened to not be any laws preventing it? Well you know what? Fuck this noise. Businesses don’t deserve to exercise that right if they aren’t prepared to serve unvaccinated people (with the necessary precautions lol). In a world where businesses, corporations and governments don’t listen to the people they serve or are meant to represent, it’s only natural that people justifiably become “entitled”.
A similar principle applies to businesses mandating that their employees be vaccinated before they can work (the NSW roadmap states that only vaccinated people will be able to work in hospitality or retail). I largely disagree with this; instead, governments should be easing up on coercive tactics like vaccine mandates and passports and instead continue encouraging people to get vaccinated on their own free will, particularly with people who work in industries requiring them to come in contact with other people (including tourism and healthcare) as they are responsible for their lives as well as their own.
There is one big thing that is missing from all of this; how long can we expect these restrictions and vaccine mandates to continue? At what point can we say that vaccine passports aren’t needed anymore because everyone has been vaccinated or we actually managed to flatten the curve somehow? Let’s not forget that the vaccines are in high demand, with long lines at major vaccination hubs, and that getting vaccinated won’t stop you from getting or spreading the virus (aside from lessening the symptoms if you were to catch it, but your mileage may vary). And what about those who are just waiting to get their vaccination (first or second)? People can say that this isn’t about control, but for public health, but I just think the government is using public health as a justification to exercise more controls on people, which to some, is just a milder way of saying that this isn’t about health, but power and control.
Holy shit, when I write sadposts on the Waifu Network I didn’t expect them to become more relevant as time went on. “Our civil liberties are curbed in times of crisis.” “We are never truly free.” “The current political climate is enabling people to become pettier and pettier and it doesn’t seem like anyone is willing to take a stand against it.” “It’s so ironic when the right people support the wrong things and the wrong people support the right things.” “Some people and businesses unironically exercise rights they don’t deserve to have.” The cope is real, ladies and gentlemen. But hey, I should have expected this when my ramblings and musings are based on politics and current affairs.
Vaccine supremacy and the dictatorship of the minority
What is probably the funniest and most ironic thing about this is that the topic of vaccine mandates is causing yet another divide in society and leading to a dictatorship of the minority. To give you an example, we have to go back to April 2021 Hong Kong, a place where the government’s laws have been oppressing people before vaccine mandates were a thing. The government decided to relax restrictions under a “vaccine bubble” program for restaurants that would see them split into four tiers based on whether the staff and/or customers are vaccinated and using the LeaveHomeSafe app, which has raised concerns with Hongkongers given recent events. The four tiers are as follows:
Tier A restaurants, who do not require their staff and customers to be vaccinated, can only have two people per table at 50% capacity and they can serve dine-in customers up to 6 PM, with a maximum of 20 people for banquets.
Tier B restaurants, who do not require their staff and customers to be vaccinated, but are following contact tracing guidelines by using LeaveHomeSafe or having customers leave their details on paper, can have 4 people per table at 50% capacity and they can serve dine-in customers up to 10 PM provided that staff get tested every 14 days (changed to 7 days from August 2021) or vaccinated.
This is where it starts to get crazy. Tier A and Tier B were in place before the “vaccine bubble” program, with the next two tiers being introduced as a part of it.
Tier C restaurants, who require their staff to have had their first vaccine dose, can have six people per table at 50% capacity (later changed to 75% capacity) and they can serve dine-in customers up to 12 AM. However, customers must check in with LeaveHomeSafe and restaurants must have a defined “clean zone” (like a fucking hospital, I assume the rest of the restaurant is just the “dirty zone” then?) for dine-in customers and vaccinated staff.
Tier D restaurants, who require their staff to have had 14 days pass after their second vaccine dose and their customers to have had their first vaccine dose, can have 8 people per table at 75% capacity (later changed to 12 people at full capacity as long as at least two-thirds of the table, so 8 people, have had their first vaccine dose) and they can serve dine-in customers up to 2 AM. They can also serve a maximum of 100 people for banquets (later changed to 180 people as long as at least two-thirds blah blah blah, so 120 people). Tier D restaurants must also have customers check in with LeaveHomeSafe and have a defined “clean zone”, same as with Tier C.
God, these rules are so complicated they make me want to kill myself. Anyway, where does the dictatorship of the minority come in?
Pro-government and pro-Beijing businesses are likely to embrace vaccines, so they are more likely to become Tier C or D restaurants. Pro-democracy businesses are more wary of vaccines (particularly Sinovac) and LeaveHomeSafe, so they are more likely to become Tier A or B restaurants (because they can get away with signing in on paper and maybe getting tested). The likewise applies for customers - pro-government customers are more likely to get vaccinated while pro-democracy customers are more likely to hold out on doing so.
Unvaccinated customers can only go to Tier A or B restaurants while vaccinated customers can also go to Tier C or D restaurants. When there is a significant proportion of unvaccinated customers, it is more than likely that there will be at least one “stubborn anti-vaxxer” in a group of (mostly) vaccinated customers, meaning that all the vaccinated customers have to eat at Tier A or B restaurants because of that guy.
Eventually, what ends up happening is that Tier C or D restaurants will find themselves unable to serve a diverse base of customers (not that they could already keep milking pro-government boomers who probably only give a fuck about the rules being enforced because they hate pro-democracy millennials and the rules don’t affect them, note that zoomers in Hong Kong are more than likely to be pro-Beijing) and as a result, struggling to choose between serving the unvaccinated or having a few more people on their tables and serving dine-in customers for a few hours longer. In the end, they have to pander to the unvaccinated and become a Tier A or B restaurant. It’s kind of like having to pander to Jews and Muslims because they can only eat Kosher or halal food or people with allergies (not that they could do their own thing already).
There are a couple of people I would like to credit for this section. The first one I would like to thank is Janelle Leung for creating the infographics that inspired this section. She was a pro-democracy member of the Kwun Tong District Council who was jailed for four months as a result of attending the “unauthorised” 4 June commemoration event (which is usually held yearly in Hong Kong but was not approved due to coronavirus restrictions being “conveniently” extended) last year and was disqualified from the District Council as a result. Our thoughts and prayers go to her as with other pro-democracy politicians in Hong Kong (most of whom have resigned from their positions due to the passing of stricter laws). The second person I would like to thank is Nassim Nicholas Taleb who wrote the chapter that inspired the infographics, The Most Intolerant Wins: The Dictatorship of the Small Minority in his book Skin in the Game: Hidden Asymmetries in Daily Life. You can read the chapter online on Medium.
Sadly, however, recent events have lead to all this not ageing well. As the Delta variant continues to spread and more people get vaccinated, the vaccinated have gone from the minority to the majority while the opposite applies for the unvaccinated, leading to more support for vaccine mandates. This isn’t a “pandemic of the unvaccinated”, it’s a “dictatorship of the vaccinated”. At this rate, the “dictatorship of the minority” is going backwards with no recourse for the unvaccinated. Freedom with caveats is NOT true freedom. Either everyone is locked down or no one should be.
This isn’t an issue of left vs. right, liberal vs. conservative or even Labor vs. Liberal, particularly because the premiers for Victoria and New South Wales, namely Daniel Andrews or Gladys Berejiklian, are from the Labor and Liberal parties respectively. If this doesn’t convince you that the main parties in a two-party system are just as bad as each other, then I don’t know what will.
My view on the debacle
Now look, I am by no means an anti-vaxxer and you’re retarded if you assume that I am, particularly if you’ve read everything up to this point. I can foresee myself getting vaccinated eventually, whether it be of my own volition or pressure from my family or work (ironically, I don’t have enough power to decide my own destiny). However, if I can, I want to hold out until I at least know how long the vaccines will last, whether the vaccines will be effective against newer variants of the virus and whether I will end up needing to get booster shots. Heck, I feel like making this into a social experiment to see how long I can get away without getting the vaccine. If I get vaccinated, then I’ll probably look like a hypocrite for saying all this, so I would just like to reiterate that I am pro-choice and anti-vaccine mandates.
“HahA YoU’re aFRaId OF GETtiNG VaCcInaTeD LOL” If it were that simple, then there’d be no point in me writing this post. Everything I’ve said in this would be the same even if I weren’t afraid of getting vaccinated. Speaking of which, how’s things going with that needle-free vaccine I’ve heard so much about? I’m surprised they still haven’t finished studies on it, but if they have, I’m surprised it isn’t mainstream by now.
“buT yoU HAD TO get VAccIneS AT ScHoOL“ Yes, I did, but keep in mind that the coronavirus was discovered right at the start of 2020 while other vaccines have been studied for at least five years. Sure, they gave you permission slips for your parents to fill in, but it’s not like you had any choice in the matter. “They came for kids like me, but I could not speak out because I was under 18 and my parents were legally the ones who could decide my fate.” I remember that one year where I had to get three vaccines for HPV. Good times.
If you want to get vaccinated, then get vaccinated. I’m not going to stop you and you shouldn’t let anyone else stop you either. But at the very least, have some respect for those who don’t wish to get vaccinated because they are human too and they have the same rights as the rest of us, and if they work in an industry like tourism or healthcare, calmly convince them why they should take responsibility for the health of others as well as themselves instead of forcing them to do something they don’t want to. I know that’s what adult life is all about these days, but people need to remember that others have the right to choose and that not everyone sees things the same way they do. I would say that it is possible to find a balance between liberty and safety, but people need to learn to live with the virus (in a controlled manner) and they should not have to sacrifice personal liberties for the sake of public safety. It’s absolutely weird how people are happy to throw other people’s rights out the window when it comes to vaccine mandates. Anyone who supports them is just as selfish as the anti-vaxxers or anti-lockdown protesters they happily scorn.
Once again, getting vaccinated won’t stop you from getting or spreading the virus, so it is still important for everyone to wear masks and practice social distancing when going out. Masks are a better example to compare seatbelts to over vaccines, even though people are saying that they aren’t enough to keep people safe. Let’s calm the hysteria down and show respect for our fellow human beings, because while we aren’t exactly China, North Korea or Afghanistan per se, we sure are sliding down the slippery slope to dictatorship.
