The first gen Of Targaryens born after the Dance is such a mid-life crisis for the dynasty as a whole. Are you more "let's get crazy let's grab every opportunity follow our hearts we're 150 years young 🤪" (Aegon Daeron Daena) or are you "welp we've lost everything we based our personality on time to rebuild our sense of self entirely around whichever higher power makes us feel superior to the dirty youngins 🙏" (Rhaena Baelor Naerys Aemon)

Who would have Daeron I Targaryen "the Young Dragon" married?
Tumblr media
Credits to @wweskywalker
I think that regarding to who would have become Daeron I's queen is very interesting.
Obviously, many (including myself) ship Daeron I x Daena, but at this moment that the Dragons had died the matter for the Targaryens was to still be at the top and keep their power, in order to survive Daeron would have to wed someone outside of his immediate family to gain more allies and power for the future Targaryens he would potentially sire.
Daeron I wanted to prove himself by conquering and bringing Dorne into the fold of Westeros and being known as the First Official King of the Seven Kingdoms.
We know he was allied with the many lords, such as the Tyrells one of whom he made Governor of Dorne, but his greatest allies were the Velaryons as they helped him greatly with the Conquest. The influence of House Velaryon was so great that when Alyn and Elaena got involved years later it was seen as a love story rather than adultery (also because Aegon IV had bigger scandals.)
In the case Daeron had lived and wed one day, he had to marry an extremely powerful and advantageous match for the benefit of the Targaryen dynasty, specially in that moment since they had conquered Dorne.
Chances are there were possible choices in The Vale as they had one of the greatest armies of Westeros, it could have been a maiden from House Arryn, Royce, Hunter, Borrell, Shett, Upcliff, etc. They all were powerful houses on their own and Daeron needed all the support he could get if his reign was to be successful, also they could have been highly trained to be an ideal queen consort and per alliance.
Other choice was marrying a Velaryon cousin, like Laena (Baela's daughter) or a Velaryon lady from another branch, in a way of showing the realm their Valyrian Exceptionalism still proved the strength of the Targaryens.
Other choice is that Daeron could have looked for an alliance with the Triarchy in fixing their relationship and wedding a woman with Valyrian heritage from there or a daughter of the Sealord of Braavos with Valyrian blood, doing both, keeping his Valyrian blood pure and getting an alliance.
Now, had Daeron noticed that a marriage between Baelor and Daena was pointless, he would have needed to arrange for Baelor to be a Septon and wed Daena to another ally, whether from The Vale or a son of Baela and Alyn or a Crownlands lord.
If Rhaena was convinced she needed to gain more power for the Targaryens, she would have been a scholar and fund charities convincing the smallfolk the gods loved the Targaryens and been wed to the Sealord of Braavos as we are told from semi-canon.
And Elaena without having been locked in the Maidenvault she would not have fallen for Alyn's grooming.

The writers alr fucked up and i SWEAR I SWEAR if they decided to make Aegon III "fall" in love with Jaehaera i would scream 😭😭😭 bcuz HE FALL IN LOVE WITH DAENAERA THE ONE WHO MANAGE TO MAKE HIM SMILE AND IF THEY RUINED THAT I JUST AUGHHHH
I hear you. I really do. I can see them do anything at this point, especially since they are trying their hardest to make the Greens look like an innocent party with all the excuses:
“It was an accident.”
And
“This is not what I wanted.”
Daenaera is Aegon III’s Queen, mother of his children and nothing can change GRRM’s canon. There are many good reasons why he chose to eliminate Jaehaera and introduce Daenaera Velaryon.
First of all, the “Green conspiracy” orchestrated by Otto Hightower and his daughter for control over the Seven Kingdoms needed to permanently end and the only way to do that was to eradicate the entire faction, including Jaehaera. No Hightower blood would be allowed to continue on the Iron Throne this way as punishment for their actions, and none ever will again.
Second of all, the Velaryons deserved a win in this. They really did. They are kin to the Targaryens and despite the few troubles they had, they remained loyal till the end (including Corlys, who in my view, acted as a double agent for the Blacks after Rhaenyra’s death, ensuring her son would succeed on the Iron Throne, and putting aside all personal ambition in order to end the war).
Thirdly, Aegon III, given what he has been through, needed someone like Daenaera. He chose her because of her light, so to speak. If he had remained married to someone like Jaehaera, the highly depressed daughter of the man who murdered his mother in front of him, I bet you Aegon would have committed suicide not long after the war.
I don’t understand why some are obsessed with the idea of “uniting the factions” through the bullshit marriage between Aegon and Jaehaera. There is nothing to unite. This war was not even Targaryen vs Targaryen. It was Targaryen vs Hightower. The Targaryens won. The end.
And given that the Blacks were the clear winners (both in terms of whose bloodline got the throne and whose army prevailed on the battlefield in the end), they didn’t have to create this union if they didn’t want to. They did it to force peace in the Realm, and make sure there would be no uprisings against the clear winners.
I actually find it kind of ironic that the Greens managed to end themselves eventually (Unwin Peake - Green supporter, killed Jaehaera for his own ambitions). This is something of high importance that the show writers have to include.
Bottom line, if they go so far as to change the family tree and keep Jaehaera as Aegon’s wife, they will risk an even greater backlash than that of GOT season 8, and that’s something they really wouldn’t want at this point. Especially since the Velaryons are all black now in the show. They would be accused of racism.
And yeah, sure, they’re going to have to try really, really, really hard to convince me that characters like Daeron I Targaryen, Daena the Defiant, Elaena Targaryen and Daemon Blackfyre (named after the Rogue Prince himself) have Hightower blood in them.

When I first read Fire & Blood, I didn’t like any of the adult participants in the Dance. None of the principal players in the dance are good or moral people, and that’s okay. Rhaenyra doesn’t have to be good or moral for me to support her claim to the throne. She doesn’t have to be Simone de Beauvoir. She was a woman, and that caused her usurpation. The misogyny and fatphobia I've seen people direct towards Rhaenyra is disgusting and it’s what pushed me out of neutral territory into team black.
Also, the greens are boring in every format, there is nothing new or interesting about any of them. Their family dynamics are unstable, and the green kids dislike each other. Aemond is a rapist and kinslaying mass murderer, and Aegon is a rapist and a drunkard. Alicent is a hateful person who marries her 13-year-old daughter to her rapist son. Otto is a misogynistic freak who facilitates the abuse of his daughter, and Daeron is a mass murderer who couldn't control his own troops.
I find the dynamics of the blacks more fascinating. The children that Daemon, Laena, Rhaenyra, Harwin and Leanor raised loved each other deeply. Their bonds of love and family were so fascinating, and I was looking forward to an adaptation that would breathe more life into them. They could inspire loyalty among their supporters even after their deaths and when they passed, they were mourned deeply. They lived and were willing to die for one another. Rhaenyra and Daemon might not have been good people, but they were good parents.
Whenever I think of the dance and its aftermath, I think of brave Baela on her tiny dragon fighting Aegon II. I think of Rhaena, weak from her miscarriage, bringing Daenaera to Aegon III to protect him from the schemes of Unwin. I think of Baela refusing to leave Jace and 11-year-old Joffrey swearing vengeance on Aemond and dying to save the dragons. I think of Baela bringing as many smallfolk as she could into the Red Keep. I think of 13-year-old Viserys II on the bridge, battleaxe in hand, protecting his family and I think of 15-year-old Aegon protecting him, in turn.

It puts me to good sleep every night knowing that Daenaera’s son, Daeron the Young Dragon, is literally mentioned as the hero of one of ASOIAF’s big 5 in his introductory chapter, and that there’s a statue of him in Oldtown, the seat of House Hightower.
Anon refers to this ("Samwell V" - A Feast for Crows):
The path divided where the statue of King Daeron the First sat astride his tall stone horse, his sword lifted toward Dorne.
I wrote about Daeron HERE. Largely, I don't care so much for him bc I suspect his successful conquest of Dorne would have transitioned into very dark, say systematically racist, times for the Dornish. On the personal level, sure we could say that the "honors" of having such an ideal (by Andal and Targ standards) son be given to Daenaera and not Jaehaera is pleasing just to fuck with greens stans and "neutrals". Still, bigger picture, thank goodness Daeron died.
Jon admired Daeron exactly for the assumed spirit of the man and his daring. He obviously was a comforting & inspirational figure for him as a many famous young men are for young boys. But for Jon especially, a bastard.
