[Naruto] Profile - Akari
Date First Thought of/Created: November 27th, 2013 Date First Drawn: April 2014
Why did you create them? Akari was created as a way to cope from my severe depression after my grandfather’s death. It started out as daydreams of someone like me who struggled with their 'darkness'. After I rejoined the Naruto fandom and discovered my love for Orochimaru and Kabuto, I gave her form and made her a Sound Ninja.
What is the origin behind their pairing? I rediscovered my fondness for Sasuke the next summer and I wanted to pair her with him. It fit so perfectly since he would join Orochimaru, and she could relate to his pain. They became something of a comfort pairing to me that I would work on whenever I was upset.

Going office on a Friday cos meeting friend going chinatown for dinner...and also for a f2f meeting. Somebody 'Eh' me when I walked out the lift...I turned back n saw hubby standing there. Weee~ hubby sending me to work! Get to have breakfast tgt! Hmm...friend texted and said she can't leave home cos MIL is sick, can't take care her baby. Although I don't think is true, cos her hubby was home. 🙃
Went to visit my friend to catch up, but mostly is to let her rant hahaha~ Have not met her since my wedding and she gave birth 2 mths ago. Aww...her baby is so adorable and I'm so glad I made him giggle. Such a happy boy!
Had early father's day lunch w fam at feather blade. Would say once is good enough. Just find it a little overpriced. Hubby is so sweet...cos I tot that's all for going out but we headed home for a rest before heading out again to the gastrobeats and ilight showcase. Knew the food is going to be overpriced but many pple still Q and buy from the stall. $4 korean fishcake, $12 yakisoba and waited for 45mins for a $9 grilled squid. By the time we start to look at the ilight exhibit, hubby was all sweaty already. Poor hubby! Went mbs for toilet break n seat down for awhile to rest. So grateful to have this hubby. Hehehe~
MIL nvr fail to surprise me. Today is chi yi so have to eat vegetarian. She said lunch we will be having durian w rice. What?! I searched it up and looks like it started from Malaysia. Pple even have durian fried rice w sambal chilli. Had been eating heaty food lately, so not interested to try this dish. Heng~ MIL took 2 dumplings from a temple back for us as lunch. Phew~ Yea, it's a day I nap n eat whole day hahaha. I tried! Watch some showing Netflix while hubby took nap.
Meet my parents for dinner. I guess I'm having my PMS. Got another both parents talking to me at the same time and both talking abt different topic. Complaint abt steak was heaty for her but she requested for a beef burger (we were at five guys for milkshake) after the lunch celebration. She said there's no fish option. 🙄 There's food court at the mall.
Guess, no more fam dining for occasion since mum kept highlighting abt her leg n hemorrhoids issue. Fine~ Can't tahan she kept repeating herself and being passive aggressive again. "You dw let me live anymore right" Cont nagging after I came out from the toilet. I had to remind her that she has made her point. Sis really is not in the mood for all d nagging.

Homecooking [Feb ed]
Helloooooooo~
Time to wrap up another month >.<  This month went by comparatively faster than January for me, mainly bcos I was watching Olympics (& all the drama surrounding the Games). I followed Short Track like religiously bcos I think it’s an interesting sport & TBH if I were to choose a winter Olympic sport to try out, I’d select short track haha there was controversy during the first half of the races, but then “it got better”, IMHO. Another sport I semi-followed was the figure skating. My gosh!! Don’t even get me started -.-” I also watched curling for the 1st time haha on a random evening bcos it was airing live at the time. I didn’t realize one game lasted so long! It’s not a sport that I’m willing to spend more time on to say the least. As for the outdoor sports like all the skiing & ‘track’ events. .. nahhhhhhh lol I like the indoor skating stuff, although speed skating doesn’t interest me. All in all, I feel terrible for Viktor Ahn (AKA Ahn Hyun Soo). Like I don’t know.. . he’s gone thru some tough times & I’m aware that he isn’t the only one but like. .. I just hope he lives a comfortable & happy life with his family :)
Alrighty, let’s talk about the foooooood!
Tumblr media
Guksu noodle with veggies & spicy squid dumplings.
Tumblr media
I made chili. Yeahhhh I know, not a usual dish I make but it turned out well! It was more watery than I would have liked it to be but flavour was good!
Tumblr media
Paired it with chili lime corn chips :D :D :D
Tumblr media
Yeahhh you got it! The usual Busan fish cake x napa cabbage noodles haha
Tumblr media
Dried pollock + pumpkin soup, with rice. I know it’s weird.. . but it was pretty decent. I used red miso & doenjang for the soup base.
Tumblr media
Day off = made kimchi.
Tumblr media
One of the bigger cabbages I’ve used. I had to make a second portion of ‘sauce’ bcos I didn’t make enough the first time.
Tumblr media
Ta-daaa
Tumblr media
With my own kimchi, I made kimchi pancake several times.
Tumblr media
& also kimchi fried rice. This was one of my work meals.
Tumblr media
My mom made some meat ‘paste’ consisting of garlic, chicken, pork, & a little bit of shrimp. They’re tasty!
Tumblr media
Treating myself. ..
Tumblr media
Here’s the outcome haha I don’t know why the colour of the broth was so pale. I added like 75% of the packet in, & it does not look like the picture o_O
Tumblr media
Another treat myself meal... haha
Tumblr media
Rice noodles with my own kimchi & the meat paste my mom made.
Tumblr media
Another day off . .. made another banchan haha
Tumblr media
I braised the pollock in soy sauce & gochujang.
Tumblr media
I don’t like Asian steamed buns much but I like this one. It’s probably my fav.
& now. .. I present to you my “failed” project -.-” !! I tried to be adventurous & make a pan-fried noodle ‘pizza’ HAHA you know in Chinese restaurants, they have the “chow mein” & it’s a bed of crispy egg noodles on the bottom & all the veggies & meat on top? I was suddenly inspired by that.. . but I don’t have egg noodles at home so I used rice vermicelli noodles. These rice vermicelli noodles are very VERY thin. Generally speaking, we just have a hard time cooking it bcos they break apart & get soggy, & essentially result in a million small pieces that it’s easier to eat with a spoon. So that these vermicelli noodles... I soaked them & dried them. Then baked it! I didn’t actually “cook” the noodles at all.
Tumblr media
I mean. .. it looks ok. I decided to add an egg (egg + dried green onion) halfway thru the baking process & it was a mistake haha bcos I didn’t add oil to the bottom of my dish, the egg just ran down & settled on the bottom >.<  (feat. unexciting dipping sauce: oyster sauce + hoisin sauce)
Tumblr media
I don’t know. .. hahaha the texture was weird. It was almost chewy. It didn’t crisp up like I had anticipated. Like the noodles didn’t break apart easily. But at the same time, it also didn’t turn to small strands like what would’ve happened if I cooked it in water. I am confused haha. Won’t be doing this again, I’m sure but the project outcome was totally unexpected.
Conclusion: stay away from these vermicelli noodles & just don’t buy it.

Anime Expo Lite Day 1 Experience!
Program: Warner Bros. Japan Presents "Stay connected with Anime"
This whole program made me so frickin happy, SEIYUU AND JAPANESE GUESTS EVERYWHEREEEE WHILE TALKING ABT ANIME YESS (note: i typed most of this while the event was going on so pls bear with all my keyboard smashes and small comments lolol i just rly wanted to make a review for this event since i knew tons of seiyuu and anime that i love would be there and talked about. Also also i am not allowed to share any screenshots or recordings of it so just fyi 👍🏻)
It started out with talking about DanMachi 3 with guests Matsuoka Yoshitsugu (voiced Bell Cranel) , Minase Inori (voiced Hestia) , Osawa Nobuhiro (from EGG FIRM), and Matsukura Yuji (producer from J.C. Staff)
They answered many questions like how the author was inspired by the voice acting from the two guests specifically, talking about specific scenes
MINASE-SAN PERFORMED A SMALL LINE WHICH WAS SO FRICKIN CUTE
one of the producers was asked about production for DanMachi and he was like ‘brUH the volumes got thicker and thicker as they kept getting released like DANG’
They prepared a teaser image for the third season and for the big reveal Matsuoka had to tear a curtain off of a huge posterboard but the curtain got caught and made it almost fall xDD (very cute and awkward moment, Matsuoka never change pls omg youre too precious)
Matsuoka was asked if there was any difficulties when recording s3 and he just talked about how Bell went through lots of growth and that he had to think about how to properly act out just how mature Bell got, considering he’s now a leader of his group
Minase-san answered the same question. She talked about how she made sure to try and keep in mind how close all of the characters are and Hestia’s mental and social growth
Iguchi Yuka (voiced Chigusa) sent in a vid message since she sings the opening!! And it was announced that sajou no hana would be performing the ending song! Both vid messages were very nice and cute and both artists just talked about how they were looking forward to everyone’s reactions to their songs and to look forward to the anime
Airing of DanMachi 3 will begin in October woop woop!🎉🎉
OML WHEN MATSUOKA-SAN DID HIS ENDING REMARKS he pointed to the posterboard and was like ‘thIS NEW CHARACTER IS CUTE’ and said ‘whO TF IS THIS’ (pointing to new characters on the posterboard lol)
The next anime that they talked about was Shokugeki no Soma: The Fifth Plate with guests: Matsuoka Yoshitsugu (voiced Yukihira Soma) (MY GOSH HES SO AWK AND CUTE OMLLLLL he was like ‘can i speak now’ cause there was that kind of awkwardness in the first segment too 😅) and Yonetani Yoshitomo (animation director)
Yonetani-san was asked how he felt abt the anime. He talked about how he wanted to express how amazing the cooking/food was as well as wanted to excite (oh b o y 😳) the audience
Matsuoka-san was asked the same thing. He talked about how he’s been following Soma since day one and thinks a lot abt his growth in Totsuki. He talked about how he kinda thinks about his own high school days (comment from director lol that he might just cry during his final recording session which i feel, its been 5 years since the first season was aired)
THEY RECORDED AN IRL SHOKUGEKI?!??!?! OMGGGG. FUKUYAMA JUN (voiced Saiba Asahi) AND TAKAHASHI MINAMI (voiced Tadokoro Megumi) WERE THERE (yall can i just- JUN LOOKS SO MF GOOD OML).
bruh matsuoka’s mixture for a sauce for tonkatsu was frickin WACK he put strawberry jam, cream, waSABI???, KETCHUP?!?!?!, along with SOY SAUCE, there was more but that combo i put alone looks so frickin wack.
Jun’s sauce oMG HE STARTED W NUTELLA AND PEANUT BUTTER WTF OMG THIS MISCHIEVOUS MAN I CANTTT 😂😂. He put in LOTS of mayo uhm... he crushed sesame seeds and dried fish together OMLLL HE WAS LIKE SHE NEEDS HER CALCIUM W THE FISH HES SO CHAOTIC and since he ran out of time he couldnt crush the fish properly so there were just HUGE CHUNKS OF FISH IN THE BOWL. omg when he was mixing it..... ew. the takamina was like E W. the way he was selling it was pure g o l d OMG HE PUT IN MF SQUID JUST NOW I CANTTTT HE IS IRL SOMA XDDD poor takamina she was fake crying, girl saME (she’s the judge)
Takamina surprisingly enjoyed matsuoka’s sauce (she was like the ingredients somehow WORKED xD) “it feels like i had a nice meal” (GIRL HOW??? XD)
as for Jun’s sauce review: FDSAFD TAKAMINA SAID THAT THE SQUID WAS STARING AT HER I CANTTT. she described it as a theme park which is perfect. tons of flavors were trying to be the main thing. The squid leg works with tonkatsu so it was ok in the end
matsuoka’s sauce won bc the squid in jun’s was kinda unnecessary but in the end she liked both (kinda surprising lol)
ADSJFKSFJ YONETANI-SAN DID THE ‘bursting’ thing ONCE THE SHOKUGEKI VID WAS DONE, SHOWING A SHIRT W MEGUMI AND TENTACLES OMG
Matsuoka’s comments on the shokugeki: he enjoyed doing it w jun since he was very good at talking (especially when he was making the sauce). Both their sauces were “okay” lol
Yonetani-san’s comments: he talked about how he struggled to cook when he was a child but even through the small irl shokugeki they did he learned smth lolol
Matsuoka was asked which lines were more memorable for him (other than soma’s lol): he talked about how the explanations for the dishes (the monologues when theyre being made and when theyre being presented) were difficult and whenever he recorded those kinds of lines, it was kind of difficult to record since it would be hard to express a good portrayal of soma’s energy if he didn’t even know what he was talking about (so on the side he had to keep using wiki to understand what soma was even talking abt lol)
Question abt the production of the anime: Yonetani-san talked abt how there were lots of complicated words; there were lots of cuts in certain scenes made to try and portray the energy that they wanted in the anime
“If you could try any of your character’s dishes which one would you choose?” Matsuoka: he wanted to try the chicken wing dumplings and a recipe book was released before so he tried it... and it turned out BAD XDD
Someone asked abt where the producers get ideas about the ending theme sequences: Yonetani-san’s used the songs as inspiration for the backgrounds used for the ending themes, also trying to relate to the cooking and the theme of high schoolers just going through life etc
OH SCHIZ THERE WAS A SPECIAL MANGA RELEASED. A small part of it was voiced by matsuoka, jun, and takamina it was vvv cute (the full would be released on Shounen Jump at a later date)
Ending remarks: FASDFDSA THIS ACTUALLY WILL BE THE LAST SEASON OF SHOKUGEKI OMG 😭😭. OMG MATSUOKA IS SO FRICKIN CUTE AND AWKWARDDDDD he was doing a small clap at the end hes so adorable someone protect him pls :(((
The next and last anime talked about was JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, where there was a behind the scenes vid made:
Ono Kensho (voiced Giorno Giorvanna) was there ofc along w two producers from David Pro (Kasama) and Warner Bros Japan (Omori Hiroyuki)
OMG FIRST THEY TALKED ABT THE STAND CRIES YESSS. DSFDSAF THEY ACTUALLY COUNTED HOW MANY MUDA’S ONOKEN HAD TO SAY that is so amazing i love the dedication. onoken mentioned how he talked to koyasu (voiced Dio Brando) abt counting the muda’s but he was like ‘ehhhh i never did that lol’. overall, everyone from all seasons tried to match the scenes but koyasu was basically the odd one out not rly needing??? to follow it lol
FDSAFDSA BRUH THERES 17 RERO RERO’S hirakawa-san practiced in the BATH the dedication is INSANE i love this
lolol onoken scrunches up his face when he says his mudas lol vvv cute (so thats a good tip for anyone wanting to say it properly)
one of the reasons they chose onoken in the first place to voice giorno was the fact that his muda’s were strong, thats frickin awesome (and he asked for a redo so that just shows great dedication, smth that staffs would want in their seiyuu)
next they talked abt the anime-only scene of giorno giving gelato to a kid. they wanted to show how kind giorno was despite eventually becoming a gang-star. its personal to kasama-san since he had actually went to italy and had experienced intense heat there and went to a gelato stand so he wanted to preserve that memory in film
they moved on to talk abt how the hitman team was first introduced in ep 10. they decided to enhance the anime by showing the many teams of passione in their own meeting places, trying to emphasize how close everyone was in their respective teams
THEY MENTIONED HOW THEY PURPOSELY PUT CHARACTERS THAT ARE LATER INTRODUCED IN THE ANIME WITHIN FRAMES JUST TO TEASE omg i love
next they talked about how the second theme for golden wind was kinda hard to make (the animation and song IS amazing which i personally appreciate). considering that they needed to kind of match up with “Fighting Gold” (the first op), it was hard to produce something for it. And they had already decided to make an alternate version of it as well, animation wise. For a while they were stuck but eventually they managed to create smth which ofc ended up as the second op for Golden Wind (and also mentioned how that also happened for Stardust Crusaders, with changing the op’s animation to showcase everyone’s stands and also the small interaction between joutarou and dio)
AHHHHHH THEY MENTIONED THE FAMOUS DIO POSE THAT GIORNO DID AHH YESSSS THANK YOU DAVID PRO FOR DOING THAT, they said that they felt that they needed to live up to fans’ expectations so considering how dedicated of a fanbase we are, they decided to put that little nod toward dio’s pose with giorno doing it too
Ending remarks: lolol kasama-san was like ‘watch jojo in these difficult times to brighten up your day’ and honestly i just might :D
Omori-san was also a guest for the live broadcast too! Plus, Kanno Yugo who’s in charge of the music for Golden Wind!!! (a frickin king providing giorno’s iconic asf theme)
OMG THE THEME LETS GO HE TALKED ABT IT: considering his experience with parts 3 and 4 for the themes, he felt he needed to try and one up himself lol; he’s grateful that his music is loved by the fandom and hopes to meets everyone’s expectations (my king you’ve done amazing work)
He talked about how making music for jojo feels like competing in the olympics (cant blame him lol its a pretty difficult job to one up yourself every time theres a new season. since he started working with jojo at stardust crusaders and considering how iconic joutarou’s and josuke’s themes are, needing to make smth as amazing as those themes mustve been tough but he def delivered in the end)
OMG KANNO-SAN PERFORMED LIVE AHHHHHH and ofc its Il vento d’oro :)) THAT WAS SO FRICKIN AMAZING OMG ugh that made me so happy
Ending remarks: both guests were very wholesome, saying to stay safe during this situation. Omori-san stayed behind to say a small message on behalf of warner bros japan, saying to continue to support them and thank you for supporting the anime :))
Overall an amazing experience 😊
I loved everything that happened. It was nice to finally see some of my fave seiyuu at an event despite what’s going on in the world right now, it definitely brightened up my day :D

Chapter 41 - Sports Festival: Lunch Time With Friends
AO3 - here
Fanfiction.net - here
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I know I posted this on Friday instead of Thursday, but I figure many of you would be with your families as I am. And if you weren't, or don't celebrate the holiday, I hope you had a pleasant Thursday anyway! :D
Time for the reactions to The Talk from last chapter. Time for how Katsuki reacted to what he wasn't supposed to hear, Hitoshi's protective side for our broccoli boy, and more lunch time friend-making shenanigans. ^____^ Let's go!
Once again, warning for excessive swearing for Katsuki. Um, maybe a need for a teasing warning? It's at the end of Hitoshi's pov from "Maybe I should start..." to "...Mei about it later." That's it I think though.
Linktree to all the things!
End notes for the chapter are under the line.
Alright! So, Katsuki got more than he bargained for when he chose to be nosy and eavesdrop. Starting to question his idolizing of Endeavor if ever just a bit. And we see a glimpse into his insecurity when it comes to him becoming the best hero.
More insight into Hitoshi and his thoughts! Super protective of our green bean. How could he not be for his first ever friend! For them trading 'tales of their childhood' I feel with how Izuku is, he would tend to downplay the seriousness or severeness of the bullying because that's just how his personality is. Like he does in canon of saying 'now Kacchan is the one getting teased' when in actuality Kacchan's 'teasing' was not just teasing to the other. If that makes sense. But at least Hitoshi sees Katsuki's actions for what they are. And he will protect his friend no matter what.
Mineta is up to his usual tricks but Izuku came to the rescue. I really hate how in canon Mineta, and Kaminari as well unfortunately, tricked the girls into dressing up as cheerleaders. Seriously not cool! And on top of that, they didn't face consequences for that which also bothered me. But don't worry! He will in this fic. ;)
Jirou is now in on the secret! Though I seriously think that she would know many of secrets with her quirk. I'm actually wondering if she could possibly know about OFA or All Might's true state in canon. But either way, I love fics where Izuku and Jirou are friends. ^____^
Fun Facts About Japan:
Let's talk festival food! :D A delicious subject indeed. So for those who don't know, 'festival' in Japanese is 'matsuri' ( 祭り , まつり ). At matsuri, there are numerous festival foods that are standard and are super tasty. Common ones are yakisoba (grilled noodles), yakitori (grilled meat), okonomiyaki (grilled savory pancake), and ikayaki (grilled squid). (If it's not obvious, 'yaki' ( 焼き , やき ) is 'grilled' and it comes from the verb yaku ( 焼く , やく ) which means 'to fry or grill'. :P ) Others are kakigori (shaved ice with syrup), choco banana (chocolate banana), karaage (Japanese fried chicken), taiyaki (fish shaped pastries that are Gran Torino approved!), crepes, dango (grilled dumplings made from mochi), takoyaki (octopus balls which are cooked in a special pan), and ringo ame (candied apples). There are tons of other festival foods and many more that are region specific. All are super tasty!
For the girls I worked with, their favorite was the jaga bata (じゃがバター) which is a grilled potato with butter. And I mean a lot of butter. They also often provided other toppings like sour cream, mayo, soy sauce, etc. so you can top it as you like. My personal favorite was the doner kebab. This is not a kabob with the meat and veggies cooked on a stick. A doner kebab is a Turkish dish and is more of a sandwich type thing. At least how they typically served it there but it can also be on a plate. (A similar dish would be like gyro or shawarma.) The meat is cooked on a vertical rotisserie and shaved off in thin slices from there to be served in a pita with tomato, lettuce/cabbage, onion, and various types of sauces. My favorites either being the mixed sauce (half mild half hot) and the garlic sauce. It's not traditional Japanese food but I found it at every matsuri I went to in Japan and was my go-to festival food. There are also tons of doner kebab stands around Tokyo as well. So tasty and I miss it!
That's it for this chapter! Next week, the start of the one-on-ones! :D We find out the line up and will get a start on the battles! See ya on Tuesday for that! Enjoy the rest of your weekend and let me know of typos or weirdness! Ta!

a week in NYC on a $80,000 salary
Day One
5am: I wake up, snooze for 10 minutes, and do my morning face routine: rose toner, bronze eyeshadow, eyeliner, eyebrows. I make a fried egg over easy (a dozen for $1) and drink some peanut milk (homemade with peanuts, water, and sugar).
6:45am: I get to my monitoring appointment for my egg freezing process, and I get bloodwork and an ultrasound within 20 minutes. I pay for lupron, a trigger medication for the egg retrieval process scheduled for this weekend. I’m getting my egg freezing reimbursed, but for now I’m paying this out of pocket. $85.
7:50am: I get to work - it’s a Sunday, but I have a 12 hour shift ahead of me. I immediately get a sign-out about a patient with a weapon in his rectum, so this day is already wild.
12:00pm: The day hasn’t been too bad, actually; I microwave my pre-packed lunch - white rice with eggplant, chicken, and thai basil. I briefly entertain buying a drink from the vending machine, but it passes.
6:00pm: After a day of answering pages and browsing furniture, it’s dinner time! I microwave my pre-packed dinner - pesto chicken bread pudding that I made with my brother’s leftover sourdough bread. Back to work.
8:00pm: Time to go home! The night ended with a patient who caught a goose in Central Park with a fishing net and decapitated it. The police confiscated the knife and the goose.
10:00pm: Because it’s the weekend, my normal one hour commute becomes two hours. I talk to my prospective roommate about our housing plans, inject myself with follistim and clomiphene for the egg freezing, and pass out.
Daily total: $85 (to be reimbursed).
Day Two
6am: Same routine, but an hour later! Wash my face, get dressed, and an egg and peanut milk. Not having to think about breakfast makes my life easier when I’m already so groggy.
8am: I’m still on the subway, but we have virtual morning lectures from 8am-9am, so I just join on my phone. I get to the hospital at 8:10 and continue the lecture on wifi. I drop off the black sesame milk buns that I made over the weekend in the residents’ lounge.
9am: We have morning rounds for 30 minutes, and I go see my patients and write their notes. One of my patients is someone I saw in the ED yesterday, and she’s very sweet now that she’s no longer intoxicated.
12pm: Lunch time! I microwave my pre-packed lunch, same as yesterday, and chill with the other residents for an hour.
3pm: I count down to 3pm for the donut drop from Kora; within 3 minutes, the donuts are sold out. Thankfully, I made it - 2 sets of the Sari-Sari (leche flan, ube, churron, halo-halo, and keso). All set for pick-up on Friday. :) $65.
4pm: I get out of work, and go home to chill, work on the apartment rental application, and work out.
7:30pm: Dinner with my mom eating leftovers, and then Stone Age (a free online board game with friends).
10pm: Follistim and clomiphene again, and off to bed.
Daily total: $65 (hopefully will be reimbursed for $56 since I’m sharing with 6 other people)
Day Three
5am: I have to go for monitoring again today, so I wake up early ... and do the same routine, except with hot HK milk tea instead of peanut milk to warm me up.
7am: It’s 50 degrees outside, and I decide to cancel my dinner plans (outdoor dining with a friend) because I’m not dressed appropriately for the weather. I go in for monitoring and it turns out I need to take a medication as soon as I get home from work, so I have an even better excuse to cancel.
10am: I discharge two patients, one of whom is my age and is one of the nicest patients I’ve ever had. I have medical students now, so I bring them along to see my patients.
12pm: Lunch time - I microwave my pesto chicken bread pudding that I brought from home. I was hoping to snack on a black sesame milk bun, but they’re all gone. :(
5pm: I go home instead of going to dinner, but it turns out that I don’t have the medication after all. I contact the ob/gyn, but it’s not available at any pharmacies; I’ll just pick it up from the clinic tomorrow (for free).
7:30pm: I eat leftovers again for dinner (peking duck and steamed dumplings). The rest of the night is pretty low-key; lazing in bed and scrolling through social media. I get myself to do a few squats, but I feel so meh that I don’t really end up doing much and call it a night.
Daily total: $0
Day Four
5am: It’s getting pretty tiring waking up early for these appointments - can’t wait for them to be over! The follicles are growing nicely :) I pick up the medication and make sure I don’t lose it this time.
10am: I discharge another patient, who is legit one of the most motivated patients I’ve ever met; he called his pharmacy to make sure that his medications would get sent properly.
12pm: I remembered that I had some leftover beef rendang from dinner last week, so I microwave that for lunch. I also take the medication ... vaginally, and I lie down on the couch for 10 minutes awkwardly while my co-residents come in and out of the lounge.
5pm: I catch up with a friend through FaceTime, and we talk for 2 hours about self-quarantining, socializing, therapy, and being tired introverts.
7pm: Duke is hosting a free private screening of Miss Juneteenth with a panel of speakers (including the film director and producer), so I watch it while eating dinner with some college friends. I didn’t immediately love the movie, but the panel definitely made me appreciate it a lot more.
10pm: Medications again, and off to bed because I have ANOTHER early appointment tomorrow. Oof.
Daily total: $0
Day Five
5am: I press snooze and I basically get out of bed at 5:30 and leave at 5:50. I’m coughing a bit this morning, and I’m 99% sure I don’t have covid, but I don’t know for sure.
9:30am: I talk to my attending and program coordinator about my very mild symptoms - slightly running nose, dry cough - and they recommend that I just get tested downstairs. It’s very efficient; I sign up for a patient portal, and I get bloodwork and the nasopharyngeal swab for the PCR. I really do not want to get swabbed again unless I have to; it does not feel good.
12pm: Microwaved lunch again - rice with tofu and beef, which my mom made last night.
2pm: I’m negative for antibodies!
5pm: I take a quick trip to Chinatown to grab some snacks - drinks at Bambu for two, which I have 20% off for ($14) and a set of 6 cheese tarts from Pink Lady ($16). $30.
6pm: My fertility doctor calls me and tells me that we have to reschedule my egg retrieval until I get my covid result back. :(
7pm: I meet up with two friends for dinner at a Korean-Uzbek restaurant near my house; it turns out that they do outdoor dining! We were originally planning on doing takeout and eating in my backyard, but this works, too. We get lagman (a hot Uzbek beef noodle soup), kuksi soup (a cold Korean noodle soup reminiscent of naemgyung), 4 pieces of manty (Uzbek beef-lamb dumplings served with sour cream), and a Korean beef bun. $17
9pm: We go back to the teahouse in my backyard, and eat cheese tarts and finish our drinks. We lose track of time talking about furniture styles, dating, splurges, and money diaries. I regretfully have to end the night at 10:30pm because it’s time for my medications, and I have to go to sleep.
Daily total: $47
Day Six
6am: I didn’t have to go in this morning, whew! We also don’t have lecture this morning, so I had a leisurely morning reviewing my patient charts.
9:30am: Negative covid test, yay!!! Egg retrieval is on for Sunday.
12pm: Microwaved rice with eggplant, chicken, and thai basil again. I still have 2+ weeks worth of this and the pesto chicken bread pudding at home; I really should freeze it.
2pm: I try to talk to my new admission, but apparently he refuses to talk for the first three days every admission. So ... just chilling.
5pm: I go to my bank to get certified checks, but it turns out they’re $12 each and money orders are only $1 at the post office ... so I go to the post office. I get two checks for $1200 and $750 and pay $4.75 in fees. They’re supposed to be reimbursed, but I have to pay the application fee for my rental building up front. $1954.75
6:30pm: I give one donut to my brother and I sell one to someone else, so I get some money back!
7pm: I meet up with friends for dinner at Tradisyon, where we split a bunch of entrees among 5 people: squid, lechon, sisig, mackerel, and kare kare. Everything was delicious :) We shared the donuts, but they were actually really dense, so we only ate 5. Idk what I’m doing with the 3 leftover donuts :x $15.
10pm: We continue hanging out but it gets too cold and I need to inject myself at 10:15pm, so we end up going to someone’s studio apartment nearby :O First time hanging out indoors for some of us!
Daily total: $1969.75 ($1950 to be reimbursed)
Day Seven
8am: I go in for final bloodwork, and I pay for the egg retrieval procedure for tomorrow - oof. I’ve never had to spend so much at one time, and I was mortified when my credit card was declined. We put half on my credit card and half on my debit card. $3250.
9am: I hang out at Chris’ apartment because I need to wait until 10:15am for my second injection, and I may or may not need to have the procedure today if my bloodwork comes back indicating that I may be ovulating. We chill and wait for Daniella to arrive.
11am: We decide that it’s way too cold outside to go biking in Central Park or eat out, and we ultimately decide on spicy hunan food from the restaurant right next door to Chris’ apartment. We order a LOT of food - mapo tofu, eggplant with green beans, chongqing chicken, hot and sour soup, beef noodle soup - and eat at his kitchen counter. I drink some of Chris’ tea with his maple oat milk from Trader Joe’s. $24.
2pm: After a lot of conversations while chilling on Chris’ couch (and a 15 minute nap), we decide to go for a short walk outside so that we can feel slightly productive on our free day together. We check out some cool recycled trash sculptures of dogs that are ... kinda ugly.
3pm: I go home and spend the rest of the day freecycling (posting stuff I don’t want anymore for other people to pick up from my house) and chilling.
8pm: It’s Saturday night, which means my dad makes sushi for us. It’s a decadent, delicious, and free meal for me :)
9pm: I go to bed early for my procedure tomorrow!
Daily total: $3274 ($3250 to be reimbursed)
Weekly total: $5440.75 ($5317.88 to be reimbursed, so actually $122.87).

SLAMS IN HERE. how did you come up with bon? what inspired you to make her; what inspired her design, backstory, and the like; and what continues to inspire you in creating, writing, and developing her?
Munday Musings || ⚜i’m scared of tumblr’s asks do whatever u want
Tumblr media
[ ♪ ||     Oh goodness. My child was born out of spite. This was the first thing I had done of her—and it was essentially an edit of someone’s commission. That person tried, many times, to get out of paying me and just getting the art for free. I refused, of course, but I liked the pose and how it came out. Ages later, I decided I’d just doodle on it. Some random squid or something, because I’ve been big into Splatoon lately. She was relatively well received, and I was pleased!
Her design was simple enough; I wanted something doll-like. Symmetrical. Dark skin was a must, because I wanted color contrast. Shinobu from No More Heroes inspired the palette for me. As such, Bon was meant to have white tentacles. I’m not sure what went wrong there, but I decided to put it into her character history as a small homage to it. Next, her clothes: really, her stockings are the important factor here. Berry Bobtail Squids have a striped pattern to them! So I kept that.
Her performance outfit, too, has an aspect of the species I’ve given her—the bell-shaped mantle. She wears a large bell-shaped petticoat, and if she is airborn, can float down due to her lacking weight. Another name for the Bobtail species is the Dumpling squid and the Hummingbird Bobtail squid. Dumplings being round, and hummingbirds being graceful fliers… I wanted to incorporate that, too!
[ ♪ ||     Development in terms of her backstory was a lengthy work in progress that I only solidified just before I made her blog (and a while after, too). I feel like I was influenced, personality wise, by quite a few people who likened her to Darla Dimple. While I definitely want to explore more of her grey morality, I feel like she still ended up significantly—no, she did end up significantly nicer than intended. And I am pleased with it, still, but I do somewhat want to return to her… more… dehumanized self, for a lack of better words. But I wanted a villain/anti-hero that wasn’t… explicitly evil? I love Harley Quinn, a lot. I do! So maybe that’s why. Her original design most definitely was just on the “pure, disgusting evil” basis, and I didn’t want to ruin people’s lives or characters here! Not yet, anyway.
That being said, her history was simply so others would have a skewered point of view against her. Rich. Rude. Spoiled. All for reasons, yes, but not all of them are good ones. Her family spoiled her because they fear a sudden death due to her perceived fragility—and as such, she expects others to have received similar treatment (albeit not for that reason). She’s rude because she didn’t grow up around anyone, and thus missed out on a lot of crucial cognitive development. Her wealth, she doesn’t see as her problem—she’s worked for it, because the family separately all have their own funds, making all of them individually, nastily, rich.
In terms of her synaesthesia, she definitely always had that, even before I fleshed her out in full. It’s something special pertaining to her, and a little outside the norm? But I took those creative rights because I can so, heh. Splatoon has always been a saving grace for me, because I react so well to color. It’s definitely my favorite game of all time, because it stimulates me on more than one level, and I definitely needed that. I suppose having a character I can personally relate to makes me very happy! Thinking about all of what her synaesthesia can do for her (the Killer Wail, so to speak) has been really fun. I want to draw it sometime.
[ ♪ ||     Her abnormality really makes me all the more enthralled with her. I love to hate her, honestly? Everything in terms of her character is new to me. I don’t play rude people very often, nor do I play disgustingly rich ones. Never have I made someone so talented, only to burden them with anxiety and depression. I’ve never given someone so many bad endings, but I’ve never had a character willingly choose to do the wrong thing every time. Most of my characters have high Emotional Intelligence and utilize it, whereas she has moderate EI (if you think in reference to how she never had social training) and disregards it. Being a synaesthestic myself, I am… soothed by having an outlet to show others how I perceive things. She’s my first “synnie” character. She stands out against all of my other OCs, and that’s very enticing to me. Hearing that she’s relatable to people makes me extremely happy (especially because her talent and subsequent burning out is real). All of these new challenges make me want to write her to the fullest, and I feel like I’ve yet to accomplish that. I love to test myself, heh. She’s very multifaceted, and I’m happy to portray every side of her, even if some are harder than others.

hot pot @ Chinese Hot Pot Buffet
You did not read incorrectly & I did not type incorrectly - I really did have hot pot at Chinese Hot Pot Buffet!
I think many of you are just as confused as I was when I 1st heard the name of the “restaurant” haha sometime last year, I had heard of it through a coworker & I was like, “what’s the restaurant place called?” It’s not a common name/type of name for any restaurant, really, but it is what it is - it’s AYCE Chinese hot pot buffet :P
Tumblr media
It currently occupies the old location of Bonanza, which is now closed. That was a buffet restaurant that I had been to once. Tbh, it was forgettable & I rarely go for buffets. Last night, I went to Chinese Hot Pot Buffet for a birthday party~
Tumblr media
Arrived @ 7:30pm, the time that the reservation for 10 was for, & guess what! There was a huge crowd at the door. From eavesdropping, there were regular “walk-in” diners, there were other “7:30″ reserved diners. .. & some have been waiting since 7pm o_O! Honestly, it felt like a big mess at the door. To say it was a small waiting area is not entirely correct; I thought it was a decent size... but there were just soo SO many ppl!
Tumblr media
Once you walk in, there’s the “waiting area”, & then the restaurant is kind of divided in half. A large seating area on the left & right side of the entrance.
Tumblr media
After 10mins, we got seated at a circular table that was in a separate divided section in the restaurant. It was very loud, & it felt like I was in Asia lol. Anyway, ignore the heating element in the center of the table; I don’t think it’s actually use-able.
*Someone else had the table order form & I didn’t even look at it lol however, it had the broth options, drinks options, & various meats (including dumplings/wontons). The meats come out from the kitchen all plated, which you’ll see later.
Tumblr media
The rest of the food is buffet style. The bowls & plates are on the bottom shelf, & then you just go for the things you wanna eat! Note that there’s only 1 “station” set up in the entire restaurant; therefore it’s crowded here like all the time! & there’s no real “order” or anything; you just gotta try your best & wait for your turn, I guess.
[The photo shows items that are mainly found in cans or packages in grocery stores, as well as “root” veggies. For example, baby corn, lotus root, daikon, konnyaku, bean curd, etc...]
On the website, they stated they have over 150 items. In the picture above, there’s already 20. Like I was saying, space is not abundant so I didn’t get a chance to take photos of the buffet area in full; however, I did not think they have over 150 items to choose from.. . at least not the food alone. I mean, the sauce counter had like 20 sauces + aromatics (like garlic, chili peppers, cilantro & green onions) available for you, so including that, there was over 150.
Below are some of the things that I did take photos of.
Tumblr media
Cooked appetizers (the chilled kinds). ..there was about 10 available.
Tumblr media
Cooked appetizers (the warm kinds), which is mainly all fried items, like dry ribs, spring rolls, & a handful of typical dimsum items.
Tumblr media
The “partially” cooked items, majority was thawed fish balls that you can find at Asian grocery markets.
Tumblr media
“Adventurous” proteins - think topping options for pho: tendon, tripe. .. & then there’s Spam in the bottom left corner haha to the right of this was the noodles section, which wasn’t really a section but rather they are kept in Rubbermaid containers (instant noodles, udon, vermicelli).
To the left of this was veggies. I really liked the variety & selection!
Adjacent to the veggies was seafood: oysters, shrimp, mussels, surf clams, squid, cuttlefish, basa. ..yeah that was pretty much it. I love oysters!!
Tumblr media
Desserts. There’s only coffee cake & Chinese osmanthus + goji berry jelly, but there was also 3 ice cream options, mango pudding/jelly, coconut jelly, & classic coconut + tapioca dessert soup. Last but not least, the fried buns with condensed milk. Oh! & if you’re too full for actual desserts, there’s some fruits as well.
Tumblr media
Okay, my sauce: garlic, green onion, sesame seeds, sesame paste, XO sauce, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, chili oil, chili flakes, & satay sauce.
Tumblr media
I just got the regular chicken broth, which is “free”. Any of their special broth is an extra $2, however, the refill is just regular chicken broth.
Tumblr media
Our meats came! Well, here’s round 1 of many. This was all gone after 1 rotation of the lazy susan.. . so we ordered more. However, magically, no matter what we told the server, the same plate containing the same amount of meats came. I’m not sure how the portion/serving sizes work but we ordered so many times & eventually lost track.
PS: I didn’t take photos as we ate bcos I was too busy chatting & eating haha but I had a great time!
Tumblr media
Ahh the beef was my fav <3
Tumblr media
YESSSS!!!
Tumblr media
& then 4 desserts for myself :D
I really liked the selection & freshness of the food. The meats ordering thing was a little weird but you can always order more so it wasn’t a big deal. The place was pretty much “printing money” the entire time; after 9pm, they have the “after hour” special, which is cheaper but you only get 5 items so we noticed that ~9:30pm, there was like another HUGE rush of customers coming in. The restaurant’s website is very informative & accurate, & so I’d recommend checking that out (hrs, pricing, “specials”). They do have an unofficial time limit of 2hrs, which is dependent on how many ppl are waiting (you know how it is), esp if your party is occupying a large circular table for 10 ppl (these tables are rare), thus, don’t be alarmed if they sorta rush you out after you finish paying (the waitress was like “ok thank you, see you next time.”); it was SO busy last night! Overall, I had a good experience~
* * * epilogue * * *
I was here for Kevin’s bday, & basically the OG crew from junior high was here haha they all hang out regularly but I haven’t seen some of them for over a decade. It felt really “old school” & the atmosphere was so awesome. No awkwardness or unfamiliarity at all & I’m super happy I was able to come. Thank you all for a wonderful Saturday evening!

Easter/Spring is coming up, which means a sale and a giveaway! :D I think I might do a fuzzy pipsqueak flower dumpling for one of the pirzes. If the sale goes well enough, I’ll actually try giving away two batches of prizes, including some candy. C: If anyone has any other suggestions, let me know! Easter/Spring will have mainly flower dumplings, flower ornaments, dragonflies, strawberries, and I’m going to make a new bunny pattern, I think! :D I want to make some cute, round chocolate amigurumi bunnies~ I also want to attempt a butterfly pattern, too. I say this eery year but am never happy with any of my experimental patterns. :’) I have a ton of small eggs left from last year, but most of them are filled with the tiniest octopus/squid I make. So I’m trying to fill up small eggs with other stuff to prevent people getting an army of those. (Though I’m told from people who have a lot that more is welcome. xD)

Boston’s Top Restaurant Newcomers of 2017: Pagu, Cafe du Pays, and More
Tumblr media
Local food writers share their thoughts on the year
As is Eater’s annual tradition, we’re closing out 2017 by surveying local food writers (including our own staff and contributors) on various restaurant-related topics, and we’re publishing their responses in these final days of the year. Readers, please feel free to chime in with your own thoughts in the comment section below.
Keep an eye on the Year in Eater archive page for other stories in this series.
Today’s next question: What were the top restaurant newcomers of 2017? (See the 2016 responses here.)
Tumblr media
MC Slim JB, restaurant critic for The Improper Bostonian:
Tumblr media
Sarah Storrer for Eater
A dish at Pammy’s
“I wrote full reviews of each of my favorites in The Improper, so read those for details, but my top picks include Pagu (a staggering one/two punch of Japanese and Spanish), Pammy’s (groovy sort-of Italian fare, super-charming space), Cafe du Pays (a novel, beguiling New England gloss on the cuisine of Quebec), Les Sablons (ritzy Continental in a lovely Harvard Square space from the Island Creek/Row 34 folks), Cultivar (Mary Dumont’s brilliant, gorgeously-sourced New American near Government Center), and Field & Vine (simple-seeming but sophisticated farm-to-table in Union Square, Somerville).
One place I didn’t review and wish I had was Sei Bar in Wakefield, which does a more traditional, superior version of Hunanese cuisine vs. the more Westernized, fancier place I did review, Cambridge’s Sumiao Hunan. Eventide was a late arrival that I really enjoyed — I laughed when the Globe’s we-ate-the-whole-menu piece came out a few days after friends and I had done the same thing — despite the Fenway outpost’s weird, fast-casual-ish setup.”
Marc Hurwitz, founder of Boston’s Hidden Restaurants and Boston Restaurant Talk, restaurant critic for Dig Boston, and more:
Tumblr media
Rachel Leah Blumenthal for Eater
Pan-seared pork and chive dumplings at Bess’s Cafe
“Two come to mind right off the bat — and they’re almost within sight of each other. Bess’s Cafe on Cypress Street (just outside of Brookline Village) is my kind of place, with outstanding takes on Chinese fare including dumplings, dan dan noodles, and crispy chicken noodle soup, while Chiharu, which is near the corner of Route 9 and Cypress Street, offers tremendous sushi along with ramen that, while not quite at the level of Ganko (more on this [in a later survey question]), is pretty damn good.”
Jenna Pelletier, food editor of Boston Magazine:
Tumblr media
Sarah Storrer for Eater
Fried chicken katsu sandwich at Eventide Fenway
“Cafe du Pays, Eventide Fenway, Ruckus, Pammy’s, and all of the other restaurants included in our Top New Restaurants feature!”
Jacqueline Cain, associate food editor of Boston Magazine:
Tumblr media
Rachel Leah Blumenthal for Eater
Guchi’s Midnight Ramen at Pagu
“I love Pagu. I had many excellent cocktails there in 2017, and squid ink oyster bao and bowls of ramen. And late-night barstool dance parties to ‘Passionfruit.’ Speaking of ramen…Ruckus is so good. I’m a big fan of the new short rib udon bowl and the Dope Yolk. I deeply wish Field & Vine opened slightly before I moved away from Union Square — two meals I’ve been there for were fantastic. Drinks-wise, Bully Boy’s cocktail bar is a true gem, and I love the Trillium Garden and its winter redux at the Roslindale substation.”
Catherine Smart, contributor to the Boston Globe and cast member of Milk Street TV:
Tumblr media
Cayden Grooms for Yellow Door Taqueria
Tacos at Yellow Door Taqueria
“Les Sablons. I’m confident Julia Child would have been a regular, so it’s where I’ll take anyone I want to impress. It kind of defies all the current trends of casual, and shareable, and rough-hewn, and I love them for it. I think there’s room for some modern-yet-old-school elegance in this town. At least I hope there is.
Yellow Door Taqueria. I was not expecting to love a spot with fancied-up tacos and frozen margaritas, but Yellow Door does it right. Take the charming Mattapan trolley and enjoy all of the house-made tortillas and mezcal cocktails.
Mulan in Cambridge is back with Taiwanese food and better than ever! Try the delicate fish soup — from the menu that’s written in all Chinese characters — and the braised pork shin in brown sauce.”
Sam Hiersteiner, contributor to the Boston Globe and more:
Tumblr media
Rachel Leah Blumenthal for Eater
Duck at Cafe du Pays
“Cafe du Pays for me. Meat pie, bitter endive salad, and a cold beer in a soulful little setting like that is all I need.”
Dan Whalen, blogger at The Food in my Beard and author of upcoming cookbook Tots!:
Tumblr media
Rachel Leah Blumenthal for Eater
Chocolate and passion fruit custard at Cultivar
“A few of my best meals this year were on the patio at Cultivar trying course after course of mind blowing dishes.
I write about mashups on my blog, and the blending of Japanese and Spanish flavors at Pagu are inspiring.
I haven’t been upstairs to the dining room yet, but the bar at Mooncusser has a great vibe and amazing snacks and drinks.
My fiance and I are ramen addicts and are both obsessed with the modern takes and casual atmosphere at Ruckus.”
Dana Hatic, associate editor of Eater Boston:
Tumblr media
Rachel Leah Blumenthal for Eater
Squid ink campanelle with lobster arrabiata at Prairie Fire
“Prairie Fire (squid ink pasta), Field & Vine.”
Alex Wilking, contributor to Eater Boston:
Tumblr media
Brian Samuels for Moona
Chicken bastilla at Moona
“Moona was my favorite opening this year. But I’ve had a number of fantastic meals at other places too, including a killer burger at Publico and heaps of charred veggies at Prairie Fire.”
Rachel Leah Blumenthal, editor of Eater Boston:
Tumblr media
Rachel Leah Blumenthal for Eater
Loco moco at Momi Nonmi
“Most of my top picks for the newcomers of the year are mentioned above and/or reflected in our recent class of Eater Awards winners and nominees. I was especially impressed by Cafe du Pays and Pagu this year; they each brought something unique to the local dining scene. In fact, Cambridge had a really strong showing overall. In addition to Cafe du Pays and Pagu, Moona, Momi Nonmi, and Pammy’s made truly excellent debuts in 2017.
Other exciting new spots include Cultivar, North Square Oyster (I’d like to drink vats of the French onion soup), Mida (I’m sad I didn’t make it to an all-you-can-eat pasta night there this year, but the regular meal I had was outstanding), and Field & Vine.
And in a year of fast-casual openings, there were way too many out-of-town chains coming in, some better than others, but fortunately there were also some fantastic local spots holding down the fort: Manoa Poke Shop (in my opinion, the best of the approximately one million poke places that are now open in the Boston area), Bess’s Cafe (those scallion pancake rolls), and Ruckus (flavor-packed bowls of noodles and more). Technically an out-of-towner but local enough, Eventide Fenway swooped in as a fast-casual-ish version of Portland’s acclaimed Eventide Oyster Co., and I’m overjoyed to have those brown butter lobster rolls closer to home. (But seriously, if you can, take the time to spend a weekend or two in Portland, eating your way through the city. It’s incredible.)

Boston’s New Restaurant Openings (3) added to Google Docs
Boston’s New Restaurant Openings (3)
If you tried to keep track of every brand new restaurant in Boston, you might go a little bit crazy. So just read this list instead. These are the new restaurant openings that seem like they have the most potential - although keep in mind, for the ones we haven’t tried, we make no promises. Go forth and be a pioneer.
We’ll be regularly updating this post. Once we check out each spot, we’ll add a note so you know where to read more about it - in our Hit List.
August  Allison Sepanek Cobble $$$$ 318 Harvard St
BYOB is a true rarity in Boston, let alone at a spot that serves up multi-course Italian-inspired meals. Cobble also sells mixers, if you decide to bring some liquor along. If you’re worried that the BYOB is the main appeal, you should also know that the chef here worked for over 10 years at La Morra, one of our favorite restaurants in town. Needless to say, our expectations are high.
Lord Hobo Brewing Seaport $$$$ 2 Drydock Ave
The self-proclaimed beer monarch is significantly expanding the kingdom’s territory. Lord Hobo has opened a massive brewery and restaurant space in Seaport, though seating will be limited to outdoor-only for now.
Mr. Roni Cups Mr. Roni Cups $$$$ 47 Boylston St
When the team behind O Ya and Hojoko opens a pizza spot, everyone should probably pay attention. Mr. Roni Cups makes Roman-style pizza, and there are sashimi and nori tacos too.
Brian Samuels Perillas $$$$ 1 Bow Market Way
Perillas was one of the first pop-ups at Union Square’s Bow Market, and now they’re back on a more permanent basis. This bibimbap spot is open for both lunch and dinner, and they’re also selling meal kits to-go.
Pearl & Lime $$$$ 1440 Hancock St
There’s a lot of change happening in Quincy, and Pearl & Lime - a Latin-inspired spot - is part of that change. They’ve got nachos, tacos, and empanadas on the menu, as well as a daily selection from the raw bar. Naturally, there are margaritas involved as well, which just goes to show that not all change is bad.
Phinista Cafe $$$$ 96 Peterborough Road
Phinista Cafe, a Vietnamese cafe, has taken over the Neighborhoods Coffee & Crepes location in Fenway. Look for some Vietmanese coffee with condensed milk, as well as a variety of sweet and savory crepes.
Stella Express $$$$ 150 W Broadway St
Stella in the South End, an Italian staple for 15 years, shut down as a result of the pandemic. But now they’ve started a food truck business, with a full coffee bar and restaurant favorites like the bolognese on sale from 7am-8pm daily. Yes, that means you can have bolognese for breakfast. For now, it’s cash only.
The Daily Catch Daily Catch Waterfront $$$$ 65 Altantic Avenue
The people can’t get enough squid ink aglio olio and lobster fra diavolo, it seems. The ever-popular Daily Catch now has a new downtown waterfront location, so now you can enjoy your seafood and look out over your seafood’s previous habitat at the same time.
Chilacates $$$$ 4257 Washington St
Chilacates, the Mexican restaurant with multiple outposts across the Boston area, has now expanded to Roslindale. There are already two JP locations, but you can’t really complain about having more places to buy tortas and enchiladas.
Kantipur Cafe $$$$ 119 Hampshire St
Kantipur Cafe is located right between Inman and Central Square, serving a variety of Nepali and North Indian food. For some reason, their website features a Jamie Oliver restaurant and some tacos - perhaps “The Naked Chef” is running a taqueria pop-up here at some point.
Ivory Pearl Bar $$$$ 1704 Beacon St
The Baldwin Bar team must be selling a lot of drinks these days. After opening Blossom Bar last year, they’ve now launched Ivory Pearl - a seafood-focused spot complete with a full raw bar. There’s also a brand new cocktail menu that seeks to break the perception that cocktails don’t pair well with seafood. Sure, we’ll enjoy some cocktails while we dismantle our preconceived notions.
Brian Samuels Elm Street Sweets $$$$ 381 Summer St
There’s a new bakery in town, sort-of. The team behind Rosebud Kitchen has launched an online-only bakery with pies, cookies, and cakes. A number of these are from Rosebud’s well-known dessert menu, but this expansion is with a national delivery plan in mind.
Smashburger $$$$ 545 Boylston St
We’re not really sure how many burger chains Boston can sustain, but it seems we’ll find out soon enough. Colorado-based Smashburger is now open in Back Bay, right across the street from H&M and Boston Sports Clubs. So you can grab a burger, go shopping for clothes, and then hit the gym - all within the same block. It’s truly an American dream.
July Senses $$$$ 650 E Kendall St
When a chemical engineer opens a restaurant, you know it’s going to be unique. That was certainly the case at Cafe Artscience, the modernist cocktail bar and French restaurant at Kendall Square that closed in December. Now that engineer has opened a Mediterranean-inspired spot in the same space, with things like redfish a la plancha and calamari au gratin on the menu. For now the food is only available for takeout, but dine in will be open soon.
Bánh Mì Oi $$$$ 1759 Center St
The team behind Phinista Cafe has also opened a Vietnamese restaurant in West Roxbury. Naturally, there will be bánh mì available, but phở, vermicelli bowls, and bubble tea are all on the menu as well. Phinista Cafe’s Vietnamese-style coffee is also on offer.
Drew Katz Revival Cafe + Kitchen $$$$ 103 Newbury St
We’re fans of the breakfast sandwiches at this Cambridge spot, which has locations both in Davis Square and Alewife. Now they’ve opened a new branch on Newbury, making the street even more of a coffee destination (Blue Bottle, Pavement, and Thinking Cup are all there too).
Alumni Pizza $$$$ 379 Washington St
The original Alumni Cafe opened in Quincy the 60’s, and apparently they served up some pretty legendary bar pizza. Some have said Alumni Cafe is as iconic as New York City’s Carnegie Deli. We’re not sure what to make of that statement, but since Alumni is now returning to its hometown, we’re certainly open to having more pizza.
Liberty Tavern $$$$ 1647 Hancock St
Speaking of more pizza, Liberty Tavern is also opening in Quincy, featuring wood-fired pies and entrees like seared scallops and pork chops. They’ll also be serving brunch items like poutine and s’mores french toast on the weekends.
Joel Ang The Lexington at Picnic Grove $$$$ 219 Jacobs Street
The team behind Puritan & Co. was supposed to open three new places in East Cambridge in June, but the pandemic altered that timeline. For now, they’re running an outdoor picnic pop-up of sorts with wagyu hot dogs, lobster rolls, and pretzel Rice Krispie treats.
City Works City Works - Watertown $$$$ 485 Arsenal St.
Just in case you needed a spot with 15 flat screen TVs and 90 beers on tap, City Works in Watertown has you covered. They’ve also got a large outdoor patio, perfect for sipping all those brews while you get your annual dose of Vitamin D.
Season To Taste $$$$ 2447 Massachusetts Ave
The highly acclaimed fine-dining spot The Table at Season to Taste closed in June, and the same team behind that Cambridge spot is opening a more casual gastropub in the space. They’ll have outdoor dining to start, with plans for indoor dining at a later date.
June Jamaica Mi Hungry $$$$ 225 Centre Street
The Jamaican food truck specialists now have their first brick-and-mortar location in JP. Curry goat, oxtails, and the Arboretum are now the top three reasons to move to that neighborhood.
Seis Pies Seis Pies $$$$ 1 Bow Market Way
Seis Pies, which translates to six feet, is a burrito pop-up that was born out of the pandemic. Now their San Francisco “mission-style” burritos are available at Hot Box in Bow Market - the menu can be found here.
Faces Brewing Faces Brewing Company $$$$ 50 Pleasant St
Faces Brewing is the newest brewery in town, and it’s now open for both indoor and outdoor dining. There are sandwiches and pizza to go, along with 11 different beers on tap at this Malden spot. Naturally, half of them are IPAs.
The Nu Do Society Nu Do Society $$$$ 125 River St
We weren’t sure either at first, but we can now confirm the Nu Do Society is distinctly different from the folks at Sandy Terraces. The team was scheduled to open a new brick-and-mortar location in Cambridge, but encountered some COVID-related renovation issues. However, they’re still serving noodles weekly - more information on their website.
Tasty Burger $$$$ 48 Winter Street
Tasty has added a fifth location to their ever-expanding patty empire - this time, it’s a new place in Downtown Crossing.
Mediterranean Grill $$$$ 2401 Massachusetts Ave
Kabobs, falafel, and spanakopita are all available at this new Mediterranean-inspired spot in North Cambridge.
may  Dumpling Daughter Dumpling Daughter $$$$ 1309 Beacon St
We suppose life would be a little easier sometimes with well-behaved, pan-seared pork dumplings instead of a screaming two-year-old. This Chinese spot recently opened a new branch in Brookline to go along with locations in Cambridge and Weston.
Chic Chick $$$$ 164 Brighton Ave
If you’ve never had the chance to indulge in Hainanese chicken rice, here’s your chance. Chic Chick in Allston is serving the classic poached chicken on rice and soba noodles. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to get enough of that ginger-jasmine rice.
April My Happy Hunan Kitchen $$$$ 1924 Beacon St
Admittedly, we’d be pretty happy too if we were served red-braised pork, spicy shrimp, and lamb stew every day. With this new Hunan spot in Brighton, it seems that a quick pick-me-up is pretty achievable.
Weltkuche Bistro $$$$ 5 Glassworks Ave
Weltkuche in East Cambridge claims to be an “international restaurant,” though it appears most of the items on the menu are more Northern Indian in nature. It adds another dining option for those living in the ever-changing Cambridge Crossing area.
March  Keith Patankar Tambo 22 $$$$ 22 Adams St
Tambo 22 is a new Peruvian spot run by the same team behind one of our favorite North End restaurants, Taranta. If there’s one thing that could help lift our spirits a little this year, it’s more places to drink pisco sours and eat ceviche.
Sombrero Chiquito $$$$ 197 Massachusetts Ave
Sombrero Chiquito in Fenway opened right before the quarantine restrictions hit, but this Mexican spot is still making things like burritos, nachos, and street corn for takeout and delivery.
Mexicali Sushi Bar $$$$ 199 Sumner St
Mexicali in East Boston serves Mexican-inspired sushi rolls, which is pretty unique for the Boston area. The aguachile roll, in particular, sounds interesting.
February  Yellow Door Taqueria $$$$ 354 Harrison Ave
Dorchester staple Yellow Door Taqueria has opened a second location in the South End. There are 12 taco varieties, like scallop frito and sunchoke, to choose from, all of which come on homemade corn tortillas. The restaurant also has a text-a-taco service, which you use to gift tacos to your friends. Turns out technology can actually be used for good.
Sam Swan Krasi $$$$ 48 Gloucester St
Wine bars are opening all over the city, and Krasi has joined the party. This Greek restaurant in Back Bay features lesser-known wines from the region and a large selection of mezze plates like celery root carpaccio and smoked monkfish. There’s also a “Feast of the Gods” for $349, if you’re feeling particularly divine.
Libertine $$$$ 125 Salem St
Libertine is a new North End restaurant that, shockingly, isn’t Italian. It calls itself a “gastropub,” serving a wide range of things from street corn to chicken pot pie to BBQ ribs. There’s also a number of mac and cheese options, probably because any place that doesn’t serve pasta in the North End will inevitably be shut down by the tourism board.
Alma Gaucha $$$$ 401 D St
Southie now has its own Brazilian steakhouse right next to Lawn on D. So this summer you could foreseeably eat an ungodly amount of meat and then play bubble soccer - Boston’s version of the Krispy Kreme Challenge.
 Cosmica $$$$ 40 Berkeley St
The team behind Beehive has a new street food-inspired Mexican spot inside the Revolution Hotel in the South End. The menu has a variety of tacos and rice bowls, as well as a selection of larger entrees like cochinita pibil (pork that’s spent hours detoxing within a banana leaf).
Bubor Cha Cha $$$$ 45 Beach St
This Chinatown restaurant, which previously served Cantonese and South East Asian dishes, has now reopened with a focus on Hunan cuisine. Expect some spicy things like steamed fish with red peppers.
 Barra $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Union Square $$$$ 23A Bow St
A small Mexican restaurant and bar has opened right next to Celeste in Somerville. There are mezcal and tuxca cocktails, as well as five to six small plates (like aguachile) daily. Weekend brunch is also available.
Mike Diskin French Quarter $$$$ 545 Washington St
The Theater District is now home to a New Orleans-themed restaurant, complete with fleur de lis, sazeracs, po-boys, and gumbo. No word yet on whether Drew Brees will make an appearance.
Lucie Drink & Dine $$$$ 120 Huntington Ave
There’s a new kind-of-American restaurant inside The Colonnade Hotel in Back Bay, and its goal is to become a “great neighborhood restaurant.” We’re not entirely sure what algorithm they’ll use to get there, but having Maine lobster pie and make-your-own-sundaes on the menu is a good start.
Brooklyn Ramen $$$$ 299 Harvard St
The speciality Japanese tea store Gen Sou En in Brookline recently closed, but the space has now been converted into a grocery store. There’s a deli housing Brooklyn Ramen in the back, which serves ramen and okonomiyaki.
Obosa $$$$ 146 Belgrade Ave
A casual West African restaurant is now open in Roslindale, serving staples like meat patties, puff puffs, and Jollof rice.
January  Brian Samuels Grand Tour $$$$ 314 Newbury St
The team behind Select Oyster Bar now has a Tour de France-inspired bistro just around the corner in Back Bay. The menu has some unique takes on French classics, like escargot pie and rabbit with parsley salad. The most expensive thing on the menu is the caviar omelette at $60 - even if we were gifted one every morning, we still wouldn’t ride a bike for 3,570 miles.
50Kitchen $$$$ 1450 Dorchester Ave
Dorchester has a new soul food and Asian fusion restaurant, serving unique dishes like jambalaya egg rolls and a smoked brisket bánh mì. It’s more interesting than almost everything at Legal, where the chef used to work.
La Mei Hotpot $$$$ 230 Harvard St
The Coolidge Corner section of Brookline now has another hot pot restaurant in the neighborhood. There’s a “crazy spicy” broth option here - while Denny’s has a similar option, we guarantee it will taste better at LaMei.
Tsurutontan Tsurutontan $$$$ 512 Commonwealth Ave
Osaka udon-chain Tsurutontan now has its first Boston location inside of the Hotel Commonwealth in Kenmore Square. Udon’s not the only thing on the menu, though - there’s also sushi, donburi bowls, cocktails, and sake.
Kim Furnald Lulu Green $$$$ 246 W Broadway
Southie now has a Middle Eastern vegan restaurant. You’ll have salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and a mezze bar to choose from, as well as some bakery items. A Turkish coffee cardamom-cherry muffin seems like a delicious option to us.
M&M BBQ $$$$ 1246 Massachusetts Ave
Dorchester Brewing Company, one of our favorite Boston breweries, is now home to a BBQ restaurant. So the next time you’re “working from home,” you’ll be able to pair some pulled pork with an IPA during an important “lunch meeting.”
Poke By Love Art $$$$ 103 Beverly St
The Love Art team already has a sushi and udon restaurant, so now they’re adding a poke spot to the mix. Everything is gluten-free at this Downtown establishment, apart from the spaghetti self-portrait on the wall by local artist Nord Fine.
Bar 'Cino Bar 'Cino $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Brookline $$$$ 1032 Beacon St
Instead of another dispensary (which was originally supposed to be in this space), Brookline just got a new Italian restaurant from a Rhode Island restaurant group. The menu is made up of a variety of small plates and pastas, as well as a specific type of Rhode Island pizza made famous in the 1980s. Tracksuits and ruffled shirts are making a comeback, so we suppose there’s no reason to discriminate against pizza.
Longcross Bar and Kitchen LongCross Bar and Kitchen $$$$ 501 Fellsway
Detroit-style pizza places are quickly expanding around the Boston area, and perhaps some of them will make it on to our best pizza list one day. For now, you can enjoy deep-dish by the fireplace at this new Medford restaurant.
December  Joyelle West Gray’s Hall $ $ $ $ American ,  Wine Bar  in  South Boston $$$$ 615 E Broadway
A natural wine bar and small plates spot has opened in Southie. Conveniently, the bar is located next to American Provisions, a full fledged cheese, wine, and charcuterie store, making this a one-stop-shop for all your self-care needs.
JM Leach Sound Advice $ $ $ $ Bar  in  West End $$$$ 60 Causeway St
If you’ve ever had the desire to drink at a movie theater without actually watching a movie, then this is the place for you. This cocktail bar is located next to the new ArcLight Cinemas in The Hub on Causeway.
Flight Club Darts USA Flight Club $$$$ 60 Seaport Blvd
Cocktails, darts, and cotton candy unite together at this Seaport bar, a unity which management believes will bring you “unexpected, ridiculous joy.” Hopefully it’s not of the Ed Norton variety.
Happy Crab $$$$ 1137 Broadway
Somerville is the location for yet another Cajun-style, eat-with-your-hands seafood restaurant. At this time, we will reserve comment on the emotional state of crustaceans within the institution.
 Lily P’s $ $ $ $ American  in  Kendall Square $$$$ 50 Binney St
Kendall Square is apparently home to a startup that helps you learn the lingo for a variety of different industries. It is also now home to this fried chicken and oysters spot - which means, no matter what you do for work, “yes” is pretty much the only term you’ll need to know.
 Cini's Cini's $$$$ 252 Friend St
Bite-sized arancini balls will now be served until 3am on Friday and Saturdays in the West End. Cini’s will also serve pizza until that time, so it may become your go to place for late-night cheesy Instagram photos.
Tavern of Tales Tavern of Tales $$$$ 1478 Tremont St
Board games are more fun when someone else is serving cocktails and your guests don’t have to sit on the couch that the cat constantly sheds on. Pizza and tater tots are also available at this Mission Hill cafe.
iFresh Noodle $$$$ 182 Brighton Ave
Allston is getting a new hand-pulled noodle store, which is great. We just hope that the “noodle-pulling” team is better than the “name-the-restaurant” team.
Tonkatsu King $$$$ 17 Brighton Ave
The Super 88 food court has a new vendor, one that will be royally frying up golden pieces of pork. We would be happy citizens under this monarchy.
Golden Krust Caribbean Restaurant $$$$ 41 Warren St
This Bronx-based Jamaican patty chain is continuing its expansion in the greater Boston area, this time in the Dudley Square area of Roxbury.
Only One Jamacian Restaurant III $$$$ 1345 Hyde Park Ave
Can you have three locations as a restaurant and still call yourself “Only One”? This Jamaican establishment, with a new spot in Hyde Park, is certainly not shying away from the question.
November  Mariel Underground Mariel Underground $ $ $ $ Cuban ,  Bar  in  Downtown $$$$ 10 Post Office Square
Mariel, a great new Cuban restaurant in Post Office Square, has opened a cocktail lounge underneath the restaurant. It’s open Tuesday-Sunday starting a 5pm and taking table reservations 9pm and later.
Woods Hill Pier Four Woods Hill Pier 4 $ $ $ $ American ,  Seafood  in  Seaport District $$$$ 300 Pier 4 Blvd
There’s a new seafood place in one of those brand new glass condo buildings on the seaport, and your dad will almost certainly mistakenly call it Woods Hole Pier 4 for years to come.
Omori Izakaya $ $ $ $ Japanese  in  Brookline ,  Brookline Village $$$$ 195 Washington St
Brookline has a new izakaya, and it’s right around the corner from a dispensary. If you’ve been in the mood for pot and robata skewers, you’re in luck.
Soup Shack $$$$ 401 Harvard Street
A JP spot for pho, ramen, and Thai noodle dishes opened a second location north of Coolidge Corner in Brookline.
Shake Shack $$$$ 322 Washington St
There’s a new burger option (and source of huge lunch lines) in Downtown Crossing, as Greater Boston gets its seventh Shake Shack
Tatte Bakery & Cafe $$$$ 345 Harrison Ave
We’re not quite at the point where there are as many Tatte’s as Dunkin Donuts in Boston, but we’re getting there, as a new one opened up in the South End.
Lola Burger $ $ $ $ Burgers  in  Seaport District $$$$ 11 Fan Pier Blvd
The people behind Lola 42 have opened up a burger joint around the corner on Fan Pier.
Bluestone Lane Harvard Square Café $$$$ 27 Brattle St
An Australian chain of coffee shops just opened its first Boston location in Harvard Square. It serves an all-day breakfast menu of things like lemon ricotta pancakes and shakshuka.
Nourish Your Soul $$$$ 208 Newbury Street
If you ever get hungry while shopping for yoga pants at the Lululemon on Newbury Street, now you have a place to eat bowls, smoothies, and other foods your spin instructor loves at Nourish Your Soul.
Dirty Water Dough Company $ $ $ $ Pizza  in  East Boston $$$$ 20 Maverick St
A Newbury Street slice joint just opened up a second location in Maverick Square.
October  Guy Fieri’s Tequila Cocina $$$$ 110 Causeway
There are plenty of things that Boston has in abundance, like rotaries, wind, and 18-22 year-olds from New Jersey. But we’ve always had a conspicuous lack of donkey sauce. The drought may be over now that we have a Guy Fieri restaurant at North Station.
Distraction Brewing $ $ $ $ Bar  in  Roslindale $$$$ 2 Belgrade Ave
Everyone is understandably sad about the closure of Mystic Brewery, but thankfully it’s been immediately replaced by Distraction Brewing in Roslindale Square.
Brato Brewhouse + Kitchen $ $ $ $ Bar Food  in  Brighton $$$$ 190 North Beacon St
And right on Distraction’s heels, Brato Brewhouse is opening in Brighton. It looks like it has way more food options that most breweries.
Six West Six West $$$$ 6 W Broadway
Southie has its first hotel, and it comes with a hotel restaurant that serves potstickers, short rib tacos, and caviar paninis. A rooftop bar is coming, too, but it’s not open yet.
The Kenmore $$$$ 475 Commonwealth Ave
What used to be the Lower Depths in Kenmore Square is now a place called The Kenmore with beer and bar food.
Veggie Grill $$$$ 57 JFK St
West Coast vegan chain Veggie Grill has opened in Harvard Square. Expect salads, veggie burgers, and lots of other quick options.
Izakaya Ittoku $ $ $ $ Japanese ,  Korean  in  Cambridge ,  Porter Square $$$$ 1815 Massachusetts Ave
Ittoku is an izakaya that just moved to Porter Square from Brighton (closing the original location in the process). It appears to largely have the same menu, though it has a full liquor license now.
Lobstah On A Roll $$$$ 254 Newbury St
A South End sandwich shop that makes the [ninth best lobster roll in Boston[( https://www.theinfatuation.com/boston/guides/best-lobster-rolls-in-boston) just opened a second location on Newbury Street.
Pink Taco Boston $$$$ 374 Congress St
A Los Angeles taco chain has opened in The Seaport. They’re open for brunch, lunch, and dinner, serving tacos, enchiladas, burritos, and bowls.
Bulfinch Social $$$$ 107 Merrimac street
The Boxer Hotel in the Bulfinch Triangle has a new lobby restaurant, meaning we have a new place to eat and drink near the Garden that doesn’t have Larry Bird jerseys on the walls.
 Rochambeu Rochambeau $ $ $ $ French  in  Back Bay $$$$ 900 Boylston St
Rochambeau is a big, brassy French restaurant in the Back Bay, which is already probably the capital of big, brassy French restaurants.
Bar Moxy $$$$ 240 Tremont
The brand new Moxy Hotel in the Theater District has a restaurant, and we’re pretty sure it’s the only place in town with a “food truck-inspired photo booth.”
Trillium Fenway $ $ $ $ Fenway $$$$ 401 Park Dr
Trillium has built a new tap room on the lawn outside of the Time Out Market, as it continues its quest to completely take over the Boston beer scene.
September  Richard Cadan Mariel $ $ $ $ Cuban  in  Downtown $$$$ 10 Post Office Sq
Mariel is a big Cuban place in an old bank in Post Office Square. We don’t know why all old banks were built to look like Greek temples, but they make for some cool looking restaurants.
Richard’s $$$$ 1193 Cambridge St
Richard’s is a new American spot in Inman Square. They serve things like pasta and grilled bison.
Ghost Pepper Taco & Tequila Bar $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Dorchester $$$$ 120 Savin Hill Ave
Savin Hill has a new taco and tequila bar and, let’s face it, every neighborhood deserves a new taco and tequila bar.
 Chalawan $ $ $ $ Southeast Asian  in  Porter Square $$$$ 1790 Massachusetts Ave
Calawan is a Southeast Asian place in Porter Square. It looks like it has some really cheap wine, so it’s got that going for it, as well as dumplings, curries, and meatier dishes too.
Gantetsu-Ya $$$$ 318 Harvard Street
Gantetsu-Ya is a new Japanese street food stall in the Coolidge Corner arcade. There are few things in life we like more than Japanese street food, so we’re excited.
 Roxanne's $ $ $ $ Bar Food  in  Beacon Hill ,  Downtown $$$$ 6 Beacon St
The former 6B Lounge - a Downtown bar that existed solely for the purpose of after-work drinks - has been replaced by a new tiki place with a menu of bar bites. Sounds like an improvement to us.
Jamaica Mi Hungry $$$$ 225 Centre Street
You’ve seen the jerk chicken food truck around town, and now you can find it in brick-and-mortar form in Jamaica Plain.
Pazza On Porter $$$$ 107 Porter Street
The owners of Caffe Dello Sport on Hanover Street are branching out with a full-service Italian restaurant in East Boston.
Family Affair $$$$ 554 Columbia St
How many different kinds of chicken and waffles do you know how to make? If your answer is somewhere between 0 and 51, then, sorry, you don’t know how to make as many different kinds of chicken and waffles as this new Caribbean restaurant in Dorchester.
Stillwater $ $ $ $ American  in  Downtown $$$$ 120 Kingston St
If you’ve ever had a friend visit Boston only to complain about our lack of restaurants that showcase the cuisine of Oklahoma, now you can take them to Stillwater for some Ritz cracker-crusted fried chicken.
Carolicious $$$$ 14 Tyler St
Aeronaut Brewery in Somerville already has Boston’s best brewery dining option in The Tasting Counter. But if you’re not up to a two-hour tasting menu, now you can get arepas at Carolicious.
