In a letter to President Joe Biden on Friday, a coalition of nearly 30 House members expressed their strong opposition to what they described as “unauthorized” American strikes that have further escalated the biggest confrontation at sea the U.S. Navy has seen in the Middle East in a decade.
“As representatives of the American people, Congress must engage in robust debate before American servicemembers are put in harm’s way and before more U.S. taxpayer dollars are spent on yet another war in the Middle East,” the letter, led by Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, stated. “No President, regardless of political party, has the constitutional authority to bypass Congress on matters of war.”
The White House, for their part, has defended the multiple rounds of airstrikes it has taken in partnership with the United Kingdom since early January in response to what has been a persistent campaign of Houthi drone and missile attacks on commercial ships since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October.
Since the beginning of the year, Biden has written several times to Congress stating that the strikes have complied with the 1973 War Powers Act. That law, passed during the Vietnam War, serves as a constitutional check on presidential power to declare war without congressional consent. It requires presidents to notify Congress within 48 hours of military action and limits the use of military forces to no more than 60 days unless Congress authorizes force or declares war.
But lawmakers, including a bipartisan group of senators, have said that decades-old statute does not give the president the “blanket authority” to take military action simply by notifying Congress within 48 hours.
The letter from Khanna and Davidson asserts that the notification only stands if the commander-in-chief “must act due to an attack or imminent attack against the United States.” They said the escalating tensions in the Middle East do not rise to that level.

It is very touching to me to know prisoners of war POWs were stuck in a terrible place with no hope when they heard the sound of the double boom, the unmistakable sound of an SR 71; they knew then their comrades had found them. Their hope was restored, and they would be rescued.
Reading the book “Blackbird Rising, The Birth of an Aviation Legend” by Donn Byrnes and Kenneth D. Hurley, I found a fascinating story about the SR 71 finding and taking a picture of the POWs towards the end of the Vietnam War.”
“On the morning of 15 October 1972, near the China border, they heard the unmistakable soft double sonic boom of a high flyer. A cheer filled the camp. Their hopes soared. They told their guards they had been found. The Blackbird had found them. Now the Air Force knew where they were.”
The Blackbirds and their gallant crews repeatedly returned with sonic booms that said. 🌟Hang in there; you will not be abandoned.🌟On January 30, 1973, The POWs at the Dogpatch compound were informed that a few days earlier, a peace agreement had been reached, and they were to be released to freedom🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Richard Roundtree (July 9, 1942 – October 24, 2023) was an American actor, noted as being "the first black action hero" for his portrayal of private detective John Shaft in the 1971 film Shaft, and its four sequels, released between 1972 and 2019. For his performance in the original film, Roundtree was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actor in 1972.
Born July 9, 1942, in New Rochelle, New York, to John Roundtree and Kathryn Watkins, Roundtree attended New Rochelle High School; graduating in 1961. During high school, Roundtree played for the school's undefeated and nationally ranked football team. Following high school, Roundtree attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. Roundtree dropped out of college in 1963 to begin his acting career.
Roundtree began his professional career around 1963. Roundtree began modeling in the Ebony Fashion Fair after being scouted by Eunice W. Johnson. After his modeling success with the Fashion Fair, Roundtree began modeling for such products as Johnson Products' Duke hair grease  and Salem cigarettes. In 1967, Roundtree joined the Negro Ensemble Company. His first role while a part of the company was portraying boxing legend Jack Johnson in the company's production of The Great White Hope.  According to J. E. Franklin, he acted in the Off-Off-Broadway production of her play Mau Mau Room, by the Negro Ensemble Company Workshop Festival, at St. Mark's Playhouse in 1969, directed by Shauneille Perry.
Roundtree was a leading man in early 1970s blaxploitation films, his best-known role being detective John Shaft in the action movie, Shaft (1971) and its sequels, Shaft's Big Score! (1972) and Shaft in Africa (1973). Roundtree also appeared opposite Laurence Olivier and Ben Gazzara in Inchon (1981). On television, he played the slave Sam Bennett in the 1977 television series Roots and Dr. Daniel Reubens on Generations from 1989 to 1991. He played another private detective in 1984's City Heat opposite Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds. Although Roundtree worked throughout the 1990s, many of his films were not well-received, but he found success elsewhere in stage plays.
During that period, however, he reemerged on the small screen as a cultural icon. On September 19, 1991, Roundtree appeared in an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210 with Vivica A. Fox. The episode was "Ashes to Ashes", Roundtree playing Robinson Ashe Jr. Roundtree appeared in David Fincher's critically acclaimed 1995 movie Seven, and in the 2000 Shaft, again as John Shaft, with Samuel L. Jackson playing the title character, who is described as the original Shaft's nephew. Roundtree guest-starred in several episodes of the first season of Desperate Housewives as an amoral private detective. He also appeared in 1997's George of the Jungle and played a high-school vice-principal in the 2005 movie, Brick. His voice was utilized as the title character in the hit PlayStation game Akuji the Heartless, where Akuji must battle his way out of the depths of Hell at the bidding of the Baron.
In 1997–1998, Roundtree had a leading role as Phil Thomas in the short-lived Fox ensemble drama, 413 Hope St. He portrayed Booker T. Washington in the 1999 television movie Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years.
Beginning in 2005, Roundtree appeared in the television series The Closer as Colonel D. B. Walter, U.S.M.C. (retired), the father of a sniper, and in Heroes as Simone's terminally ill father, Charles Deveaux. Next, Roundtree appeared as Eddie's father-in-law in episodes of Lincoln Heights. Roundtree then had a supporting role in the 2008 Speed Racer film as a racer-turned-commentator who is an icon and hero to Speed. He also appeared in the two-parter in Knight Rider (2008) as the father of FBI Agent Carrie Ravai, and co-starred as the father of the lead character on Being Mary Jane, which has aired on BET since 2013.
In 2019, Roundtree co-starred in the comedy film film What Men Want, and returned to the role of John Shaft in Shaft, a sequel to the 2000 film, opposite Samuel L. Jackson and Jessie Usher, who portray John Shaft II and John Shaft III, respectively. This time, Roundtree's character was described as Jackson's character's father, while acknowledging that Roundtree had pretended to be Jackson's Shaft's uncle in the 2000 movie. He also starred in the movie, Family Reunion in 2019.
Roundtree was married and divorced twice and had five children. His first marriage was to Mary Jane Grant, whom he married on November 27, 1963. Roundtree and Grant had two children before divorcing in December 1973. He dated actress and TV personality Cathy Lee Crosby shortly thereafter. Roundtree later married Karen M. Ciernia in September 1980; together they had three children. Roundtree and Ciernia divorced in 1998. Roundtree was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 and underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy.
Roundtree died of pancreatic cancer at his Los Angeles home on October 24, 2023, at the age of 81.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends. 🙏🏾❤️🕊

🇺🇸 Step back in time and delve into the fascinating history of AT&T's journey in the development and production of mobile phones! The AT&T Corporation (an abbreviation of its former name, the American Telephone and Telegraph Company) was a successor of the original Bell Telephone Company founded by the legendary inventor of the first practical telephone - Alexander Graham Bell in 1877.
👉 AT&T's division - Bell Laboratories, was created in 1925 from the consolidation of the R&D organizations of Western Electric and AT&T. Bell Labs made significant scientific advances, including the transistor, the laser, the solar cell, the digital signal processor chip, the Unix operating system, and the cellular concept of mobile telephone service.
🔍 AT&T's foray into the realm of mobile phones dates back to the early days of telecommunications. In the late 1940s, it embarked on pioneering efforts to develop mobile phone technology, laying the groundwork for future advancements in wireless communication.
💡 In the early years, AT&T, a huge telecommunications giant, focused on developing analog mobile phone systems, laying the groundwork for the future of wireless communication. Their first systems were limited to car phones, which required roughly 30 pounds of equipment in the trunk. These early devices were bulky and limited in functionality, but they represented a groundbreaking leap forward in telecommunications.
🏁 The first cellular phone was the culmination of efforts begun at AT&T Bell Labs and continued by Motorola Inc. While Motorola was developing the cellular phone itself, AT&T Bell Labs worked on the cellular system called AMPS. On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper placed the first public call from a Motorola handheld portable cell phone to his counterpart Dr. Joel S. Engel at AT&T Bell Labs.
🏙 Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) was an analog mobile phone system standard originally developed by AT&T Bell Labs and later modified in a cooperative effort with Motorola Inc. It was officially introduced in the USA on October 13, 1983. On this day, Bob Barnett, former president of Ameritech Mobile Communications, placed a call with a cell phone to the grandson of Alexander Graham Bell, who was in Germany for the event.
➡️ During the 1980s to 1990s, AT&T Corporation tried to achieve its place in the cell phone market and introduced some interesting devices: 3810, 3850, and 6650. Featuring sleek and ergonomic designs, they were a real testament to innovation and engineering excellence.
⚙️ Equipped with advanced features for its time, these phones boasted impressive functionality, including voice calling, text messaging, and address book capabilities. Their cutting-edge technology represented a leap forward in mobile communication, setting new standards for performance and reliability. These phones also ran on the AMPS 800 cell system.
📑 In 1996, AT&T spun off Bell Laboratories, along with most of its equipment manufacturing business, into a new company named Lucent Technologies. AT&T retained a small number of researchers who made up the staff of the newly created AT&T Labs. That meant the decline of future attempts at cell phone manufacturing by AT&T Corporation.
🌐 Today, AT&T continues to be a powerful multinational telecommunications holding company, offering a diverse range of cutting-edge services to consumers worldwide. With a rich legacy of innovation and a steadfast commitment to excellence, AT&T remains a leader in the ever-evolving landscape of telecommunications.

James Madison and his Criticism of La Fayette
I am preparing a post about La Fayette’s taste for glory, both from a modern and from an 18th-century lens. I wanted to show how the perception of a character trade such as this can change over time but also howe some of La Fayette’s contemporaries warned the young men not to be mislead and blinded by his appetite for fame and glory. Furthermore, I like to look at the connection between La Fayette’s well-known desires and the causes the championed all throughout his life.
While writing, I used a letter, that, the longer I thought about it, deserved its own post for several reasons.
James Madison wrote to Thomas Jefferson on October 17, 1784 a letter that partly reads:
During this scene and even during the whole stay of the M. he was the only conspicuous figure. The Commissioners were eclipsed. All of them probably felt it. Le[e] complained to me of the immoderate stress laid on the influence of the M. and evidently promoted his departure. The M. was not insensible of it but consoled himself with the service which he thought the Indian speeches would witness that he had rendered to the United States. I am persuaded that the transaction is also pl[eas]ing to him in another view as it will form a bright column in the gazet[te]s of Europe, ⟨and that he will be impatient for its appearance there without seeing any mode in which it can happen of course.⟩ As it is blende[d] with the proceedings of the Commissioners it will probably not be publi[sh]ed in America very soon, ⟨if at all.⟩ The time I have lately passed with the M. has given me a pretty thorough insi[gh]t into his character. With great natural frankness of temper he unit[e]s much addres[s] ⟨with very⟩ considerable talents, ⟨a strong thirst of praise and popularity.⟩ In his politics he says his three hob[b]y horses are the alliance between France and the United States, the unio[n] of the lat[t]er and the manumission of the slaves. The two former are the dearer to him as they are connected with his personal glory. The last does him real honor as it is a proof of his humanity. In a word I take him to be as amiable a man as can be imagined and as sincere an American as any Frenchman can be; one whose past services gratitude obliges us to acknowle[d]ge, and whose future friendship prudence requires us to cultivate.
“From James Madison to Thomas Jefferson, 17 October 1784,” Founders Online, National Archives, [Original source: The Papers of James Madison, vol. 8, 10 March 1784 – 28 March 1786, ed. Robert A. Rutland and William M. E. Rachal. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1973, pp. 118–122.] (02/26/2023)
La Fayette had returned to America in 1784 and with the conclusion of the war, was free to travel around a bit. He had by chance ran into Madison and it was soon agreed that Madison would accompany La Fayette for some time on his travels. By the time Madison wrote this letter, he and La Fayette were visiting some Native American tribes.
Now, Madison is describing La Fayette’s behaviour here and gives his personal opinion on his character and some of his motivations. His tone is rather harsh, but I can understand where he is coming from. This harshness and criticism of La Fayette serves to illustrate one of two points – La Fayette was not liked by every American. There is often a certain narrative that La Fayette loved everything about America and every American loved La Fayette and this simply is not true. I should not need to say this, but human relationships are so much more nuanced! Unfortunately though, La Fayette and his relations to and with America are often placed somewhat on a pedestal and it is therefor quite refreshing to see somebody so openly dislike him at first (because yes, Madison would eventually warm up to La Fayette.) And not just somebody but a person of great national importance like Madison.
The second point I would like to make plays directly into the metaphorical pedestal I just mentioned. If we have a look at the transcription, we see that certain words are placed in angle brackets. These were words that Madison had crossed out and that were later restored by his editors. Madison wrote the majority of the section concerning La Fayette in code so that only Jefferson could make sense of it. At some point after Jeffersons death in 1826 the letter came back into Madisons possession and he, already in his seventies and after so many years, decided to edit this letter.
His editing process did not end with crossing out certain passages. He also overwrote one passage with a more flattering account.
In a word I take him to be as amiable a man as can be imagined (…)
The original passage reads:
In a word I take him to be as amiable a man as his vanity will admit (…)
Madison took great pains to imitate Jeffersons handwriting in the process and to falsify the original code in an attempt to obscure his initial opinion. It could be argued that Madison, after he had grown closer to La Fayette and with the latter’s 1824/25-Tour still fresh in everybody’s memory, was simply ashamed of his earlier criticism and wanted to change his statement. I think we all know a similar feeling of uneasiness when we stumble about something written by us many years ago on a topic our opinion on has since changed.
But Madison did not choose to destroy the letter or cross out the complete section. No, he chose to very carefully mince his words, even going to the length or imitating Jeffersons handwriting. For me personally this sounds less like a man changing his opinion after many years but more like a man who was afraid of what his initial criticism of La Fayette could do to his own reputation.

The F-117 Nighthawk
The Lockheed F-117A was developed in response to an Air Force request for an aircraft capable of attacking high value targets without being detected by enemy radar. By the 1970s, new materials and techniques allowed engineers to design an aircraft with radar-evading or “stealth” qualities. The result was the F-117A, the world’s first operational stealth aircraft.

SR-71 T-Shirts
CLICK HERE to see The Aviation Geek Club contributor Linda Sheffield’s T-shirt designs! Linda has a personal relationship with the SR-71 because her father Butch Sheffield flew the Blackbird from test flight in 1965 until 1973. Butch’s Granddaughter’s Lisa Burroughs and Susan Miller are graphic designers. They designed most of the merchandise that is for sale on Threadless. A percentage of the profits go to Flight Test Museum at Edwards Air Force Base. This nonprofit charity is personal to the Sheffield family because they are raising money to house SR-71, #955. This was the first Blackbird that Butch Sheffield flew on Oct. 4, 1965.
The first F-117A flew on Jun. 18, 1981, and the first F-117A unit, the 4450th Tactical Group (renamed the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing in October 1989), achieved initial operating capability in October 1983.
A total of 59 F-117As were built between 1981 and 1990. In 1989 the F-117A was awarded the Collier Trophy, one of the most prized aeronautical awards in the world.
F-117 Nighthawk low RCS
The F-117A program demonstrated that stealth aircraft with a low radar cross section (RCS) could be conceived, designed and developed, as the following story that appears in Ben Rich’s Book “Skunk Works” proves.
Rich (who served as the second vice president of Lockheed’s Skunk Works after Kelly Johnson) recalls that time Denys Overholser, engineer and radar specialist for Lockheed’s Skunk Works, spoke to him about the first completely stealthy airframe, the F-117.

The Hopeless Diamond
“Boss,” he said, handing me the diamond-shaped sketch, “Meet the Hopeless Diamond.”
“How good are your radar-cross-section numbers on this one?” I asked.
“Pretty good.” Denys Overholser grinned impishly. “Ask me, ‘How good?’”
I asked him and he told me. “This shape is one thousand times less visible than the least visible shape previously produced at the Skunk Works.”
“Whoa!” I exclaimed. “Are you telling me that this shape is a thousand times less visible than the D-21 drone?”
“You’ve got it!” Denys exclaimed.
“If we made this shape into a full-size tactical fighter, what would be its equivalent radar signature… as big as what—a Piper Cub, a T-38 trainer… what?”
Denys shook his head vigorously. “Ben, understand, we are talking about a major, major, big-time revolution here. We are talking infinitesimal.”

As big as an eagle’s eyeball
“Well,” I persisted, “what does that mean? On a radar screen it would appear as a… what? As big as a condor, an eagle, an owl, a what?”
“Ben,” he replied with a loud guffaw, “try as big as an eagle’s eyeball.”
Although officially retired in 2008, many F-117s remain airworthy and are used to support limited research and training missions (such as conducting dissimilar air combat training sorties with USAF and US Navy aircraft) missions based on overall cost effectiveness and their ability to offer unique capabilities.
I am sure that Ben Rich is smiling down from heaven knowing that his baby is still active.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
October 25, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
OCT 26, 2023
Today, the United States House of Representatives elected a new speaker to replace former speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who was ousted by Republican extremists. The new speaker, Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana, had an advantage over rivals because he has been a backbencher in the House fewer than eight years, too invisible to have made many enemies. He is the least-experienced speaker in more than a century.
Senate Republicans openly admitted they didn’t know who he was. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) added: “Apparently experience isn’t necessary for the speaker job…. We’re down to folks who haven’t had leadership or chairmanship roles, which means their administration of the House will be a new experience for them.”
The Republican conference decided to back Johnson after extremists scuttled their first choice after McCarthy, Louisiana representative Steve Scalise, and after a block of Republicans refused to back Trump loyalist Jim Jordan of Ohio. After Jordan, Minnesota representative Tom Emmer got the nod from the conference…until former president Trump expressed his disapproval.
Democrats repeatedly offered to work with Republicans to elect a speaker who accepted the results of the 2020 presidential election and who agreed to bring to the floor for an up-or-down vote legislation that was widely popular in both parties. The Republicans rejected those offers.
Instead, they have elected a pro-Trump extremist as speaker.
Johnson was instrumental in Trump’s attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Routinely in touch with Trump, he rallied his colleagues to object to counting the electoral votes from states that Democratic candidate Joe Biden won. As Trump’s legal challenges to the results failed, Johnson pushed a Texas lawsuit against the four states that had given Biden the win, calling for the invalidation of millions of his fellow Americans’ ballots, and echoed lies about Venezuelan interference with ballots.
Johnson has also embraced the far right’s culture wars. He is a self-described evangelical Christian who is staunchly anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ rights, anti-union, and anti-immigration. He has close ties to the Israeli right wing, and he opposes further aid to Ukraine, saying such money would be better spent at home, but he has also called for extensive cuts to domestic spending programs.
When a reporter asked Johnson about his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, the colleagues surrounding him booed and told the reporter to “shut up.” On the floor of the House, every single Republican voted for Johnson.
And so, the House Republicans have caved to the MAGA extremists. Representative Pete Aguilar (D-CA) said that for the Republicans, the search for a speaker hadn’t been about looking for someone interested in “growing the middle class, helping our communities, keeping the cost of healthcare lower, and making life for everyday Americans better.” Instead, Aguilar said, “this has been about one thing…who can appease Donald Trump. House Republicans have put their names behind someone who has been called the most important architect of the [2020] electoral college objections.” A Republican yelled back: “Damn right!”
The Republicans appear to be planning to go before the voters in 2024 with a presidential candidate who is deeply enmeshed in trials over allegedly criminal behavior, whose hastily appointed Supreme Court justices overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision recognizing the constitutional right to abortion, and who tried to steal the 2020 election. Alongside him, they have now elevated a fervently anti-abortion House speaker who backed the former president’s effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Voters resoundingly rejected both of those positions in 2022.
In contrast to his Republican colleagues, in his welcome to the new speaker, House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) outlined his caucus’s efforts to work with Republicans in a bipartisan way, noting that it was the Democrats who provided the votes to raise the debt ceiling, to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government and thus avoid a shutdown, and to secure disaster assistance for Americans suffering from extreme weather events.
Going forward, he said, House Democrats will “continue to push back against extremism in this chamber and throughout the country. House Democrats will continue to protect Social Security, protect Medicare, protect Medicaid, protect our children, protect our climate, protect low-income families, protect working families, protect the middle class, protect organized labor, protect the LGBTQ community, protect our veterans, protect older Americans, protect the Affordable Care Act, protect the right to vote, protect the peaceful transfer of power, protect our democracy, and protect a woman's freedom to make her own reproductive health care decision.”
But Jeffries’s soft speech covered a steely message. He observed that “Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election,” adding that “[h]e’s doing a great job under difficult circumstances, and no amount of election denialism will ever change that reality.”
Jeffries pointed out that great presidents of both parties have urged House members to “put aside partisan politics for the good of the American people,” and he noted that Americans are “understandably alarmed at the turbulence of the moment, at the chaos, the dysfunction, and the extremism that has been unleashed in this chamber, from the very beginning of this Congress.” But in what amounted to a warning to the newly empowered extremists, he continued: “But this, too, shall pass. Our country has often confronted adversity, and the good news is we always find a way to make it to the other side.”
“We faced adversity in the 1860s, in the middle of the Civil War, when the country was literally tearing itself apart. We faced adversity in October of 1929 when the stock market collapsed, plunging us into a Great Depression. We faced adversity in December of 1941, when a foreign power unexpectedly struck, plunging us into a world war with the evil empire of Nazi Germany.
“We faced adversity in the Deep South in the 1950s and 60s, when the country was struggling to reconcile the inherent contradictions between Jim Crow segregation and the glorious promises of the Constitution. We faced adversity on September 11th, 2001, when the Towers and the Pentagon were unexpectedly struck, killing thousands of lives in an instant.”
And then, by placing House Republicans in this list, Jeffries tied them to the wrong side of history. “We faced adversity right here in the House of Representatives when on January 6, 2021, a violent mob of insurrectionists incited by some in this chamber overran the House floor as part of an effort to halt the peaceful transfer of power,” he said.
And, he concluded, “[e]very time we faced adversity, the good news here in America is that we always overcome….”
