Movie Review | Hideout in the Sun (Wishman, 1960)

Let me ask you a question. How do you film a bank robbery on the cheap? Do you, I dunno, show the inside of the bank? Maybe have a character go up to the teller and hold them up? Have somebody in a security guard or police uniform? Maybe fire off some squibs, or at least point a gun? Or some panicked extras for colour? No, you do none of those things because all of them take time or cost money. What you do is have one of your leads walk into and out of a nondescript building, and have his accomplice pick him up in a car and drive away, while sirens and alarm bells ring on the soundtrack. It’s like jazz, it’s the bank robbery you don’t see. Some would call this movie magic, and some would call this the Doris Wishman touch.

Hideout in the Sun was Wishman’s first movie, preceding the much better known Nude on the Moon. Like that one, this is firmly in nudie cutie territory, and in that sense, I suppose it’s a success as there are plenty of nude people here and some of them are pretty cute. (However, this is definitely a case where the women are better looking on average than the men, many of whom can be charitably described as schlubby.) Nudie cuties were how people managed to see nudity onscreen before outright pornography. The rules are as follows: boobs and butts, yea. Bush, nay. (And the latter still holds. Hey-o! That’s a political joke for you.) What this means is that the characters looking away from the camera will be fully nude for your enjoyment, while the ones facing the camera will other be in convenient poses or wear unexpected articles of clothing (at one point, a group of women approach wearing aprons). There are also some cute birds here, including flamingos, parrots and an emu, which leads me to believe that this might not really be a country club and a bunch of people decided to go streaking in a safari park. It’s also worth noting that this club doesn’t seem terribly secluded, yet you don’t have crowds up people lined up at the periphery trying to get a peek. This is surprising as it was a lot harder to see nudity at this time, given that it had only been invented a few years prior.

The plot here involves the two brothers who pulled off the bank robbery kidnapping a woman and going with her to hide out in the nudist club where she has a membership. This is an ominous beginning as the brothers’ choice of eyewear brings to mind Henry Kissinger, who is one of the last people you’d want to see in the nude. (Or in government. Hey-o! That’s another political joke for you.) Quite frankly, I’m not sure either one of them has ever been nude before in their life. The more adventurous brother decides to step outside with the woman while they both enjoy any number of leisure activities in the buff, while the more wound up brother stays inside, sweating profusely and going through packs and packs of cigarettes in mere hours. (The more adventurous brother is usually seen only from the chest up, leaving me to assume he’s either dangling wildly or pointing right at the camera at any given moment.) There actually is a pretty interesting tension here between the open air pleasures of the nudie cutie taking place on the club grounds and the claustrophobic noir playing out inside the cabin. Things come to a boil when the bad brother, the one who still feels shame about his body, tries to make off with the spoils of the robbery to the Miami Serpentarium. This is about the worst possible place you can make a getaway, but it means that the climax consists of a goofy mix of tense jazz and reptile closeups. Also, it turns out the good brother’s name is Steve Martin.

I’m not gonna bother rating this by boring normie standards, although I’ll note that it’s a bit more engaging than Nude on the Moon by virtue of having things like tension and narrative progression. (If I recall correctly, characters in the latter movie praise this one as a good time at the movies.) And for a Wishman movie, there’s a surprising amount of sync sound, with people daring to move their lips while facing the camera. The sunny Florida atmosphere is not unpleasant to bask in, and there’s something maybe a little sweet about it’s belief in the power of love. As the great Huey Lewis once said, it’s a curious thing.

Big shoutout to @rainbowswordfish for being the most amazing partner and the most amazing trip partner I could ask for 😍😍😍 We went to Wilmington, North Carolina from Thursday to Monday and had such an amazing time doing so!

Planetarium ✔️ Comedy show ✔️ Getting high with the comedian after the show ✔️ Aquarium ✔️ Against me! Concert W/ Mal Blum and the Blums and Museum Mouth ✔️ Get a picture with Mal and Audrey after their set ✔️ Play in the snow ✔️ Go to the serpentarium and talk to all the noodles ✔️

All in all it was amazing and I’m so happy to have gotten to do it with someone as amazing as Megan 💛💛💛

We bought baby bearded dragons from Petsmart on 12/23/19, we’ve had them about 5 months. We love them but we’ve taken in a dog and now have too many pets. The big one is in a 40 gallon tank, the smaller one is in a 10 gallon tank. They both have domes and bulbs for UV and basking lighting. All tanks, logs, water bowls, food bowls, cricket container and greenery were bought from Petsco or Petsmart. I bought the dirt from Serpentarium. I also have a metal siv scoop, leash different sized harnesses, plastic tweezer for worms and other accessories. We are hoping for nice homes where they will continue to be loved and cared for.

St Cloud, Florida, is 26 miles (42km) from Orlando, but if you’re worried about it being another tourist trap dominated by people who’ve come for the theme parks.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised should you choose to visit. The city, located in Osceola County, is designed to be different from the many locations nearby that serve the interests of big-city tourists. In St. Cloud, you’ll find more of a relaxed, small-town vibe that results from its initial origins as a retirement community for former servicemen and women. There’s still plenty for visitors to see and do here, and as you’ll see below, there’s something for everyone. Check out our review of the best things to do in St Cloud, Florida, and you can be sure of a fun holiday.

1. Go on a trail buggy adventure at Forever Florida

Florida is known for its theme parks, but if you’re not that interested in ducks and mice then you might find you enjoy a different type of animal-based attraction; you’ll find it at Forever Florida. A wildlife conservation area spanning more than 4700 acres (1902 hectares), this attraction features no fewer than nine separate ecosystems. Sitting on an open-air coach, you can see species as diverse as white-tailed deer and the native Florida panther, as well as hundreds of different species of bird. The trip takes you through a real ranch, where you can see another species native to the region, the Florida Cracker horse.

2. Take a horseback ride on the country trails

Still at Forever Florida, as a joyous alternative or addition to the open buggy, you could take an adventurous horseback ride through the delightful scenery while spotting some of the wildlife that hang out close to the trails. A truly magical wilderness experience, this ride was previously taken by the Native Americans as far back as the 16th Century. This eco-friendly trip gives you the chance to see spectacular sights and spend 90 minutes with your trusty steed as you look out for birds, alligators and more besides.

3. Try out bass fishing on East Lake Toho

East Lake Tohopekaliga, known more familiarly by the locals as Lake Toho, is a huge freshwater body, with St Cloud just one of a few cities that have sprung up on its banks. As part of your trip, you’d be well-advised to take the chance to head out onto its waters in a boat and enjoy some of the best fishing available in the region. Famous for its largemouth bass, as well as channel catfish, the lake is serenely beautiful, especially at sunset.

4. Tour the Reptile World Serpentarium

While everyone wants to swim with the dolphins, and coo over cute cubs in the zoo, it’s a shame that reptiles don’t get a bit more love. You can take the opportunity to change that with a visit to Reptile World, where you can see plenty of snakes including cobras and black mamba (and witness a fascinating and daring venom-milking display). The reptile world runs the gamut from the small - with adorable iguanas and bearded dragons - to the much larger, including alligators and crocodiles. It’s a true family trip, but one you certainly won’t regret making no matter how large or small your party.

5. Catch the big cats in action at Central Florida Animal Reserve

The magic of Central Florida Animal Reserve is that you get to see these majestic wild animals in their most relaxed environment. The phrase big cats is one that we use to talk about lions, tigers and other animals of that sort, but seeing them here, you’ll be amazed at just how familiar their behavior and demeanor is if you’ve got a pet or two yourself. All tours are guided - because these are, after all, still wild animals, as cute and well-behaved as they may be - and the non-profit reserve puts all proceeds into providing a contented life for the cats

6. Enjoy a picnic at Lake Runnymede Conservation Center

The natural beauty of the area surrounding St Cloud is something that lends itself to an endless list of sight-seeing opportunities. Lake Runnymede, an area of land bought by Osceola County as part of a conservation drive, is home to looming hardwood trees which provide an environment for native birds, squirrels and more creatures besides. Late afternoon walks allow you to enjoy some of the most incredible vistas as the sun comes through the trees, and it’s a perfect spot for a picnic.

7. Enjoy the bucolic splendor of Deseret Ranches

Set among citrus groves in Central Florida, the sprawling attraction that is Deseret Ranches will meet with approval from young and old members of the party alike. This is a traditional ranch which combines conservation, history and modern agriculture to provide an invaluable service to people in the region, and also offers visitors the chance to see the Floridian countryside at its best. Along with the ranch animals, there’s the chance to see Jug Island, an expansive wetland attraction that is home to a range of wading birds.

8. Pick perfect peaches at Premium Peach

If you’re visiting at the end of Spring, then you owe it to yourself to give this place some of your time! One of the highlights of St Cloud’s varied collection of agri-tourism attractions, Premium Peach is - as the name may suggest - a peach farm where guests are allowed to pick their own peaches. The humid, sub-tropical climate of the region is perfect for growing this succulent fruit, and when the fruit is in season, you can be sure of a colorful, delightful experience.

9. Soak up the sights (and smells) at Mick Farms

The joy of Mick Farms is that it truly is a feast for all the senses. Bright yellow sunflowers, juicy red strawberries and a plethora of freshly grown foods make this the perfect farm experience from a taste, sight and smell point of view. You can book some time for a photoshoot in the sunflower fields if you’re of an artistic frame of mind, or you can just enjoy the experience of a wander around the various fruit and veg patches, before taking some items home to enjoy as a meal or snack.

10. Hike through Peghorn Nature Park

St Cloud is, in many ways, ahead of its time, having been one of the first towns in all of America to address the importance of an ecological heritage. Peghorn Nature Park is one example of this approach - it’s a collection of hiking trails and curated areas that have been developed by the city’s Parks and Recreation department. The park gets its name from the cattle native to the area a century ago, whose horns grew in the shape of wooden pegs.
