Sweeney Todd has the major advantage of having a landlady that’s madly in love with him.

I first went down this rabbit hole of thought a few years ago. My updated version is that Nellie doesn’t make him pay rent. She just doesn’t care. She already wants him to live with her, so why make him pay?

Back when I first thought of this tho, my joke was that they’re both extremely broke, so she maybe tries to get him to pay rent a little bit, but he’s got, like, no money, so he’s just like, “Sorry, can’t.” And she just lets it slide, ‘cause what is she gonna do, evict the love of her life?

He gets away with this all the time.

The other joke I made is that he very easily could use this whole thing to his advantage. Not in a “toying with her feelings�� way, just in a “my landlady’s in love with me, what’s she gonna do” way. One day, he just buys her flowers and is like, “Do you except barters?” And of course she accepts because she loves flowers and she loves him, and even if it was to get out of paying rent, she thinks it’s sweet, and they both know deep down that she was never going to make him pay anyway.

“O-Oh,” Randall nodded as he set down his candle, allowing him to better see her as he grabbed the stool he’d left earlier, sitting on it so that they could see eye-to-eye.

For a moment, he was mesmerized by her eyeshine: He knew some creatures, such as alligators, had them (having seen the shine of a gator’s eyes a couple times in his life); Dorian once told him the scientific term, tapetum lucidum, a funny word he struggled to pronounce when he first saw it, and had long forgotten until he looked at her now, in the dimness of the bathroom. Her eyes had a sort of rose-gold glow to them that was haunting in its presentation (once again reminding him of an alligator lurking just barely on the surface, watching laxly from its place in the water), and yet beautiful in its own right. He felt as if he could look at that shine forever.

Snapping out of his reverie, he remembered himself, and so he stooped to pick up the little bowl; there was plenty in there. Shyly, Randall looked up at Emily, then to the bowl in his hands, and then back to her, asking softly, “D-Do you, u-um...d-do you want me to, um, p-put more o-on?” He repeated the rub action, well aware of how warm his cheeks were as he asked her this, absentmindedly fidgeting with the bowl all the while.

bens such a nice guy i stopped by the stage door for my matinee show the day before the anniversary and i reminded him that i gave him art in 2018 (first pic) and thanked him for liking my other painting of him and emilie the other day on twitter & he was like “oh is yours the one like this with the hand up? [does the pose] i have that up in my dressing room i love it! you know those are my favorite kinds of gifts bc theyre one of a kind theyre special you cant just get them from anywhere thank you for that” like alright alright now youre gonna make me feel all mushy man 😭 i said yeah it makes me happy every time it pops up in the back of your videos im glad you like it!! and then i said id see him the next day and at the stage door for the anniversary i was like “hiiii its me again the artist” and he was like “AH YEAH HI!!!” lmao hes just so chill love him

Listening to the new Musikaalimatkassa podcast ep by @fyeahfinnishmusicaltheatre, about musical ticket prices (it’s really good), and I’m just flabbergasted at how expensive it is to see shows in Finnish city theatres in comparison to other countries... :D Some thoughts in English (and my own experiences) under the cut.

So, shows I’ve seen this year and the prices I got tickets for are:

Cabaret at Theater Hof (Germany), small-ish municipal theatre production directed by (and starring) Uwe Kröger. One adult 'Orchestersitze’ (rows 1-5) ticket: 31 EUR. Balcony seats available for around 24 EUR (5 EUR on the same day).

Elisabeth at Festival Bruxellons (Belgium), fully staged summer open air theatre festival production. One adult premium ticket (middle seating with more room and the best visibility): 47,50 EUR, normal-price tickets were around 37,50 EUR if I recall correctly.

Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre (UK), commercial theatre that has been running the original West End production of the show for 16 years next week. Last minute rush tickets (fourth row on the dress circle/balcony): £30.

This autumn in my native Finland, tickets for productions of international shows I would consider seeing range from 46 EUR (category 4, limited visibility) to 85 EUR for Anastasia, 45 EUR for all adult tickets to Evita, 89 EUR for all tickets to Priscilla: Queen of the Desert (except those for seats with limited visibility). And many theatres (like the one doing Evita) don’t offer multiple categories of tickets - everything from front row to the very back is the same price!

Of course, it’s not like the state supported Finnish theatres are the most expensive place to see musicals in the world - premium tickets to big commercial theatre productions abroad can cost upwards of 100 euros which I did pay to see Tanz in Stuttgart last year because getting robbed by Stage Entertainment is a musical fan rite of passage I guess. And I could probably get student discounts for some of the Finnish shows, bringing down the price a bit, but not enough to make them more affordable than student tickets abroad (which are generally around 5-10 euros less than adult tickets). AND some of the Finnish shows probably have same day ticket options similar to what made it possible for me to see Wicked in London, but in general, the same day ticket system is not at all as well-developed here as it is in the West End.

But still, on average, the price range for these Finnish productions is considerably higher than what it is for many other European municipal theatres. If you add travel costs (I have to take the train in Finland for most productions, and they end so late that overnight accommodation might also have to be considered), it’s actually a relevant question for me to think about whether I want to see a musical I know I’ll like in Europe & do other tourist things in a new city vs. see a show I might enjoy in Finland with a much heftier ticket price and less choice in regards to where I’ll sit.
