Michael Loew is known today as an Abstract Expressionist painter, a compatriot and friend of De Kooning, but he arrived at his mature style at the end of a journey that would see him work through other genres and bring with him something of each. In and around 1951, he completed a series of cubist-inspired nudes, such as these, after have big studied post-Cubism with Hans Hofmann. One critic writes: “(H)is fluidity of line was characteristic of Matisse, and the dissolution of form and space acknowledged Picasso’s influence.” We have several examples of this work available. They would make a beautiful installation. At the end of last year I was working at a hospital a couple of hours away for a few weeks. It was a Friday and I’d just finished a huge day and week and came outside to find my motorbike smashed in the carpark. Which meant I was isolated with no money and now no transport. - But everything just worked out and I’m so grateful. Just in: a rare and fabulous work in the Synthetic Cubist style by German artist Rudolf Ausleger, c.1925. Ausleger was branded a “degenerate “ artist by the Nazis and much of his work was destroyed during the war.
