DRAGONS RISING PART TWO CLIP SPOILERS! IT'S ABOUT THE RAS THING KINDA
Here's my take on the whole Chima confirmation thing.
One: I love it. Hands down. I didn't particularly enjoy the original show (the voice work and writing haunt me but the music and animation were DIVINE), but I still watched it and all the fandom conflict that went with it. It's a pretty important little slice of Ninjago history and I'm glad they're elevating it past the Possession finale cameo and the Beaver Portal.
Two: Just like how LEGO Dimensions is Portal 3, I think DRS2 is Chima season 4. I think that final shot, where they pull the camera back to show everything beneath what we THOUGHT was all of Chima, happens SECONDS pre-Merge, which is why we never got a proper season 4. I have very shaky evidence for this (in short: based on the cameo's placement in both series (at the tail end of Ns5 and somewhere in the last quarter of Cs1 based on the characters present on the hill) we can infer that one season of Chima takes approximately five Ninjago seasons, which is why Chima ends with three seasons and Ninjago's first run ends with 15 before they Merge. Obviously this doesn't take anything like starting timelines into account, but they probably don't operate on the same timeline anyway?). Evidence aside, I'm mostly just believing it because it's funny.
Anyway: top tier move from the writers. I'm excited to see how far they take it. Funny how a two-word name-drop can do so much for worldbuilding...

I am not exactly very interested in the sidestorys I currently have... but I think I should still watch them. So... uh... lets get this over with ^^’
Tumblr media
I honestly don’t know if I find it cool, amusing or weird that basically no book ever in the Trails-Series was based on fiction ^^’ I mean, obviously there was a lot of Liberty taken with most of the books, but all in all they are all based on true storys and true people. Heck, sometimes they even use the actual names.
But I would say they sometimes go too far with it. We would know nothing right now about Swin and Nadias past without the 3 and 9 books.
Tumblr media
In case you haven’t read 3 and 9 yet... here is a little spoiler for the ending: They do not end up like that in the book, this is pure wishful thinking on Nadias part XD (For now, that is!)
Tumblr media
You know that these days I love Shirley, but uh... this hos thing with Ilya still leave a bitter taste in my mouth. I mean yes, on the long run it served Shirleys first step into being more human definitely well... but if we look at it this way, we might as well say that Crow being a Terrorist served his character-development well or that George placing the bombs inside the Couragous helped his development well on the long run - and neither of this is per se really wrong, but that can not make one forgive them what they did. Ilya almost died, because Shirley wanted to provoke Rixia and that is not something that can or should be forgiven that easily. I mean, in the end I am a Trails-Child by heart and will likely end up somewhat forgiving them all one way or another, because that is what Trails-Children do, but I will never forget it or pretend it didn’t happen.
Tumblr media
I guess live will always be hard if you have been practically raised to be an assassin from a young age, forced to murder people when you are still somewhat a child put into an organisation were betraying your partner can save your life... these kids have been brainwashed and programmed and escaping that with so less experience in living a normal and happy life must be a true challenge. Thank good Nadia is not alone.
Tumblr media
They would be so darn cute as a ship but he... yes, you guessed it, is practically sisterzoning her ^^’ What else is new? But if you look at Kuro 2, I think we are making progress with their relationship. Not only in a good way, but who said growing up is easy?
Tumblr media
I think we found some common-ground here ^^’
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
Oh my... but I can not blame her, after everything that happened, after all the time he has been gone, he should have told her that he would be going back for a little while longe rmuch sooner. I can totally understand that she is angry and hurt right now. After all, she just finally got him back.
Tumblr media
And now we are back at the main plot. Its C-Time now.
Tumblr media
But he really didn’t mean it. His questions and intentions made absolute sense. Tho I guess he was not expecting her to have emotions like that and... you know... man do tend to have a... uh... you know... less empathic understanding of how to treat other people the right way ^^’ But once again, I am sure he did not have any bad intentions.
Tumblr media
Rufus always was good with words, empty promises and fooling people... I can not blame Lapis for immediately falling for him... uh... his words... or... him? Well, you get what I mean. In CS1 I would have never thought he was a bad guy, a traitor in the truest sense. Heck, I liked his character and I thought he was on our side and would protect Jusis and his friends and then in CS2, even when he was with the bad guys I wanted to trust him, I thought there must be some good reason behind him doing what he was doing... and then he revealed to be an Ironblood... This man is really a master if fooling people and I am sure - even tho this will change eventually - at the moment, all he wants is to use Lapis. Like he has always just used people.
Tumblr media
Gotta love this girl.
Tumblr media
He just escaped prison and “ran” from a death sentence, even the name and title that comes with being and Albarea and the former Governor of Crossbell shouldn’t exactly give him much money under his belt, given they I doubt he needed it in prison and I also doubt he has much access to any of his former bank accounts. So... were does he get the money from? Or is this too just an empty promise?

ALSO. Spoilers for cs1
I know it's more common to complain that Crow gets forgiven too easily but like. Fuck Osborne. Crow did nothing wrong in terms of shooting his imperialist ass. Hard to really feel like he’s an EVIL VILLAIN over just that.
Like yeah the ILF attack on the trade conference was pretty bad but I literally just replayed this game and I already forget if there was ever any credibility to that threat or if they were just flexing on the imperial government (and I think it was the latter) so... yeah IDK dude kinda hard not to take his side a little

I think Lloyd is older than Estelle and Joshua but theyre his like, seniors in the sense that theyve been in the business longer. Rean is a bright eyed teenager at the start of cs1 and loses all that optimism and happiness like, within cs2 and by reverie hes still barely older than his students. Van is like, an old man but i cannot explain what i like about him in that context or the plot with him because thats a spoiler

Unorganised thoughts on Trails of Cold Steel II:
they still haven’t told me why it’s Class VII
So I liked this WAY more than CS1, thumbs up
I am annoyed that the only new location was Ymir (WHAT A COINCIDENCE that all the important places in the war were specifically ones Rean had been to already)
I just really wanna go to Parm idk
Bless Anton for showing up right at the end and giving me just enough AP to make A0
(fav Anton and Ricky subplot yet, god I love those guys)
I LOVED how tactile all the reunions were! I love it when fictional characters hug it makes me happy
I found it extremely funny that the final boss straight up tells the characters ‘hey, there’s literally no point to fighting me, you’ll gain nothing except closure I guess’ like that’s VERY on the nose and meta for a final boss
The game does have some real ending fatigue though, I don’t think we needed the epilogue
I did like the final boss though - up until that point, I had become so good at using my Dream Team of Rean, Elliot, Machias and Jusis (or Nuke-sis, as I call him, for his insane levels of arts damage output) that everything had got kinda dull for me. But final boss was actually a challenge, I had to think rather than just using the strategy that had worked on everything else
Which was Rean delays, Elliot heals/deals arts damage, Jusis drops arts nukes, and Machias does miscellaneous support/uses his link ability to keep Jusis’s EP topped up
Oh yeah I had them linked through pretty much the whole game and they hated it and it was super funny
So OH MAN, in their linked victory battle ending screen thing, Jusis goes ‘not bad, you actually held your own for once’
And it’s a little muffled, so the first time I heard it I swear I thought Machias responded with ‘you know what you can hold? Your damn top!’ and I dropped my controller. Had to go out of my way to win another battle with a link attack because no, no way-
He
Um
He said ‘tongue’
Anyway, characters!
Rean: Immediately upon starting up the game I found Ride Along Estelle in my DLC inventory and equipped it in the hopes that it would inspire Rean to be a better protagonist. It... kinda worked? I don’t hate him anymore, and I was pretty hyped to learn he was Osbourne’s son
And then Lloyd showed up immediately afterwards and I was like ‘oh wait here’s a protagonist I actually LOVE, nvm bye Rean lol’
Alisa: I literally never use Alisa unless the game makes me lol she was there and I don’t hate her but also I cannot remember a single interesting thing she did. Even during her one bit of plot relevance she was overshadowed by Angelica it’s hilarious that the marketing makes her out to be the deteuragonist
Elliot: A GOOD BOY who served me incredibly well with his off the charts healing crafts, I can’t believe I started CS1 not liking him much and thinking him useless. I love the little dance he does in his idle animation
Laura: I still like Laura, I wish she was more plot relevant. I don’t feel strongly about her, but she’s always a welcome addition to any scene
Machias: Unpopular opinion probably but I really like him, even if his outfit in this game was awful. So are his alt outfits. Fashion disaster. I bought him contact lenses from a shady highway business man because he looks better without glasses. I made him ludicrously bulky, if he’d just had some kind of taunt craft to protect Jusis (squishy mage) with he’d be a perfect tank
I’m a fan of him in a ‘this is my trash son’ kind of way lol
Emma: Uhhh kinda boring which is impressive since she’s actually important and pseudo-related to Vita and all. Btw I guessed she was a witch in chapter goddamn three of CS1 after reading the folklore book, and I find it extremely wild that it’s either a dragged out, foregone conclusion if you have read the book, OR witches even existing is completely out of nowhere if you haven’t
Jusis: My favourite, because I’m basic. But like, he’s seriously the most interesting of the guys, and I made him Rean’s best friend (only one I got to rank 7 with lol). And his bonding event in Bareahard was so gooood!
I find it incredibly funny that he insists he and Machias aren’t friends because 1. Yes you are and 2. Do you even have any other non-Rean friends, guy? You literally never hang out with anyone else unless it’s plot related
Still low key ship it. Enjoy that Rean does too, apparently. Still reeling over their Trial Chest’s quote
His second S-Craft is ridiculous looking
Fie: Most interesting girl, love how she just doesn’t get flustered ever, funniest character, best girl in the game, what the HELL was that outfit
Gaius: I keep forgetting Gaius exists lol. I don’t dislike him, but he’s not very interesting to me. He’s Zin, or Noel
Millium: Man do I want to know more about Millium. Her whole thing about learning to cry... so sad and SO fascinating. What is the deal with her and Altina?!?
Sara: I hated Sara at the start of CS1. Now I adore her. God she’s just the best. Please let her interact with Schera please please please Falcom
Towa: Cutest! She’s so cute and I still love her and I did her final event even though she is TOO GOOD for Rean! She got to be a captain! I love her!
As for more minor characters - still think Angie’s great, just wish she wasn’t kinda creepy about her love of girls, deeply dislike that the game ship teases her and GEORGE, who I still otherwise find inoffensive but also, you know, male, Alfin is great, Toval is great too and I still can’t get over him being Toby, stop teasing Claire with Rean let there be one woman who isn’t into him please, oh good Sharon’s here and they don’t do that with her and she’s awesome also can’t believe I used to not like her, more Olivier always please, same with Mueller, Celine is Morgana from P5 except better in every conceivable way, Crow :(, all the Ouroboros lot are great as always, and Elise is easily my least favourite character in this franchise and can get in the sun for all I care
I read a transcript of the drama CD and hey Rean’s dad can also get in the sun for saying that his adopted son isn’t good enough to marry his biological daughter like where do you even start-
I love that I’ve gone from reacting to Ouroboros appearances like ‘oh shit oh no’ to going ‘oh shit it’s these fucking clowns (affectionate) again’
Still love Beryl. Also love Lambert
When they mentioned ‘Mueller’s friend’ I thought it would be Julia and I was so excited and then so disappointed that it was Neithardt who I still don’t like
Elliot’s dad looks ridiculous riding on top of that tank
I loved riding the bike around SO MUCH, even if it took me a while to get a hang of the controls
Aurelia Le Guin is just Edelgard Fire Emblem, right? And Bardias is Claude? Except I guess this game came first, so like, other way around
Man I loved flying around on the Courageous. Also I FINALLY got a map, all I wanted in CS1 was to see a map of the country
However, Act 1 was definitely my favourite part - the sequence where the kids have to sneak through the railway lines under the bridge to get to Garrelia is one of my favourite parts of this entire series. I kind of wanted the whole game to just be this group of teenagers trying to lay low and survive a civil war while also travelling and helping out from place to place
I uh... I want JRPG Life is Strange 2
Why is there a snowboarding minigame. I mean, I loved it, but... why is it there?
I still really miss the old battle orbment designs from Sky. The ARCUSs just aren’t as cool :(
I watched the secret Black Records scene on YouTube and I am so happy to finally have an explanation for Rosine, it was really bothering me that she seemed so out of place at a military academy
I’m very very hype to play CS3 based on the spoilers I have for who will be making appearances...
:D
Seriously why is everything in these games azure though just say blue-

What were your thoughts on all the other Trails Of games (summarised real quick if you want)?
Ok so Disclaimer: I am playing through these games in what I describe as an Ass Backwards Order: I started with CS1, then did CS2, then did Zero, then Ao, and now I’m playing Sky 1, which will be paused because CS3 is happening in 10 HOURS. That said, let me bequeath upon you...
DRIMITO’S THOUGHTS ON TRAILS OF:
Cold Steel 1: The game that introduced me to the franchise and to Falcom, to be honest. Now, I knew of Falcom’s existence, that they’ve been around for a while, that they did Ys and the old Dragon Slayer, stuff like that, but I didn’t know A THING about Trails Of. I bought Cold Steel 1 on a whim: I liked the description on the Steam page, liked the designs enough, and said “YOU KNOW WHAT, I DON’T ENJOY JRPGs ANYMORE BUT MAYBE... ONCE IN A WHILE, IT’S FINE, LET’S SEE” and frankly I didn’t have any expectations, if anything, I was going to make fun of it it if it was bad enough. What I found instead was one of my favorite games ever. The nuance of the world building, the dynamics between characters, the music, the battle system, it all was incredibly wonderful, I fell in love with the game and the characters. I’m a sucker for slow burn, too, so it felt so, so good and yet TENSE that this game was taking its sweet time introducing the world to me without any seemingly urgent plot... When suddenly, the plot arrived. It was then that this game went from Good to Favorite. The ending absolutely spilled my pulled pork all over the fucking floor and I IMMEDIATELY bought CS2 because NO WAY YOU END IT THERE.
Cold Steel 2: HOLY SHIT DUDE NO YEAH THIS GOES HAM. I don’t wanna say A THING about it because everything is a Spoiler with a capital SADISTIC, only that if 1 is a favorite, 2 is an Absolute Favorite. Holy HELL whenever you think this game cannot go any harder, it somehow outdoes itself.
Zero no Kiseki: When the Great Wait For CS3 began, I started pursuing other entries. The one that caught my attention the most was Zero: The cast and the setting looked right up my alley. I was absolutely fucking correct, and let me remind you, I don’t play JRPGs anymore, I don’t enjoy them anymore, yet, I was coming back home day after day for more, more, and more Trails Of. It was double so with Zero than it was with Cold Steel! It’s incredible, and I hope they bring it to the West officially one day because it’s a masterpiece you need to play, but Zero is to Ao what CS1 is to CS2, that is, the preparation, the orientatation so you can begin...
Ao no Kiseki: My top absolute genuine jumbo double cheese favorite Trails Of game and also one of my all time favorites. Ao is outright unreasonable in how good a game can be. All the details, all the offhand comments, all the preparation from the first game, including things you may merely dismiss, take shape here. It’s just too damn good, it made me feel every emotion in the spectrum, it made me discover a few emotions we have no names for, and, when it was all over, I cried into the arms of a shaman behind a waterfall because I would NEVER be able to experience Ao no Kiseki for the first time again. The updates to the combat system, the conclusion to the characters’ arcs, the way the plot handles its pacing, it’s all too damn good.
I’M STILL PLAYING SKY 1 AND WHILE I CAN SAY IT IS COMFY AS FUCK, I AIN’T DONE WITH IT YET, SO NO OPINIONS YET.
but yeah, play Cold Steel (and Zero/Ao), it’s good for you.

My thoughts on The Legend of Heroes games.
I love them. Sky SC and The 3rd are probably some of my favorite games of all time. After playing through every game (minus Cold Steel 4) in the span of 2 and a half months, I feel compelled to tell every I know that likes JRPGs that they have to play these games. Buuuut that doesn’t mean I think these games are flawless. There are some things I really hate about this series. And I want to talk about the things I love and hate about the series.
Let’s start off with the positives.
1.) First and foremost, this series has a world that feels like it is alive and will continue to live even if the protagonists do nothing. My favorite way this was portrayed was in the Crossbell and Cold Steel arcs. Events in Cold Steel 1/Cold Steel 2 and Ao no Kiseki happen simultaneously. In Cold Steel 2 you get to see what’s happening in Crossbell from Erebonia and vice versa, albeit a bit weaker in Ao until the very end.
Another one of the ways it does this is by having in game readings of news articles, fiction, non-fiction, and reports. I love reading. This game is meant for people who like reading. It doesn’t matter what you like to read, but just know that if you play these games, ya gonna have to read. These readings paint the picture of a much broader world than the area you inhabit.
The world also feels alive is on a smaller scale. And that’s how towns have npcs that don’t even matter that still have their own little arcs and lives to live. Sometimes these characters will have a sidequest that will be the culmination of their arc but if the player doesn’t interact with them, the payoff won’t be there. This felt strongest in the Cold Steel arc, especially since CS1/3 takes place in a military academy, so you get to experience the stories of other students.
2.) This series is great for what it is when it comes to things like imperialism, class struggle, and war. The politics of this series is insane. Things that happen in game have happened or are happening in real life. I don’t want to spoil anything so I (and this pains me) won’t explain in further detail. Please just play them to find out.
3.) As a game, the combat is really fun. I’m a sucker for turn based fights and I love turn based combat even more when it shows the turn order. Also there are no random encounters so you’re mostly in complete control when determining when you want to fight.
4.) While on the topic of it being a game, it has something that I think should be standard for most games and definitely all JRPGs. It has a fucking fast forward mode! I love that. Going back and forth between areas isn’t a hassle, easy fights end in literal seconds, and you can fast forward through camera pans.
5.) Most of the characters are really cool! And there are a lot of them. The protagonists are dope. The antagonists are dope. It’s great. Of course there were a few I didn’t quite care for (sorry Millium) but there were also some characters I cared a little bit too much for, like Renne. So when I got to Star Door 15 in The 3rd lemme tell you I was literally sobbing.
I think the Crossbell arc was great with characters because unlike the other games, the main 4 party members you have are the ones you keep.
My favorite characters in the series are Kevin Graham, Randy Orlando, Estelle Bright, Wazy Hemisphere, and Crow Armbrust. If you have any intentions of playing this series don’t google anyone, and honestly, just don’t look at the wiki at all. Even if you think you’re safe because you’re not.
6.) Journey before destination. I got spoiled on so many things yet it was never ruined for me. Honestly they make it pretty obvious too with some things too that I want to believe that they’re just messing with us, because even if we’re spoiled or if something is predictable, it’s still a great journey. That being said, I know I mentioned that I didn’t want to spoil some things in #2, I just don’t wanna be the one to do it to you. I just believe that this series is best enjoyed blind. If you’re curious and accidentally learn something however, that’s still fine.
EDIT:
7.) The music!! How could I forget the music! Falcom’s music team puts out some absolute bangers. Here’s one of my favorite battle themes they put out.
Bonus.) I just want to give a special shout out to Trails in the Sky FC. It’s the very first game that starts off this grand interconnected story and I’m so happy that the main character is Estelle. I think it’s huge because for a JRPG that came out in 2004, Falcom made their main character a loud, brash, rude, and strong ass young woman that grows into an incredible person (that is still loud, brash, and rude). I just love them for that. Estelle’s the best...elle.
And now about some of the things I hate. For some of these I understand that there are cultural and ideological differences, but they still made me, ah, uncomfortable.
1.) Homophobia. Right off the bat. While it’s never direct with its homophobia, LGBT characters’ sexuality is often responded to with a 😅 from all the characters. But that’s not the main issue. The issue is that two out of the (potential) three LGBT characters, (If there are more I’m sorry but I only caught the outright stated) Olivier and Angelica, are constantly portrayed as predatory and I think that’s just a bad look honestly.
I do have to give props however for their portrayal of some characters’ gender. It’s not outright stated but from context clues I was able to assume that a certain main character in Crossbell was non binary. Being non binary myself that could be me projecting but idk it seemed pretty clear.
2.) In the Cold Steel arc it feels like a lot of the women there are supposed to be part of the Rean’s harem. They’re all wonderfully written within their personal storyline but when it comes to romance it’s just kinda cringe. Especially when in CS3 where Rean is an adult, a lot of them are minors. Hell, while we’re at it, while infrequent, there’s also sexualization of minors in general. It mostly comes down to some temporary outfit designs and I would say there’s nothing inherently sexual about most of them, but that’s if they were real people able to make their own choices...which they’re not. Someone designed those.
Finally I just have to mention why the hell do the characters act like if Tita and Agate were to date that’d be fine. He’s 28 and she’s 16 (CS3). They’re not together thankfully because only she has a crush on him, but like I said, characters think it would be ok and that’s an issue for me.
Now on to topics about the game/story itself instead of shitty things like these
3.) Within the first bit of CS1 there’s one of those “oops we fell and accidentally ended up in a unique position” things and I just hate those. Stop that. It’s treated as an interpersonal and a communication issue that lasts for hours of game time.
4.) In some story battles you’ll do great only to see the cutscene afterward show you losing, only to be saved by a stronger ally. It kind of made me feel like what I did was useless. Sometimes you also are supposed to lose a fight but you don’t know it.
5.) Sometimes you could get swept up in a wave of exposition that lasts for half an hour or more. You don’t know when this will happen. This was no issue for me but that’s because I was unemployed when I played them so I had a lot of free time. Your time should be respected.
6.) Crossbell games haven’t been officially localized so if you’re impatient like myself then you have to make do with translations that are just ok.
I’ll have a final point that’s kind of a spoiler so as for now I’ll rate the games and show the recommended playing order with an explanation. Even the last place rank is a good game though. I’ll post the final point at the very end so if you’re reading this and wary of spoilers you can finish after the conclusion.
Ranking:
Sky SC > Sky the 3rd > CS3 > (Ao = CS1) > (Sky FC = CS2) > Zero
Play Order:
Release Order: Sky FC, SC, 3rd, Zero, Ao, CS1, CS2, CS3
How I played them: CS1, CS2, All of Sky, All of Crossbell, CS3
How I would replay them: Sky, CS1, CS2, Crossbell, CS3
Since the first 2 CS and 2 Crossbell games are happening simultaneously there are many things that overlap. In my opinion I think that the Crossbell games give away more things about the Cold Steel games than the other way around.
If you read this, thank you for taking the time to do so. These games are really incredible and I highly recommend them to anyone that enjoys JRPGs. If you do decide to play, enjoy. Please talk to me about them.
7.)
Character deaths aren’t impactful because no one in this damn series stays dead. It gets really annoying after a while.

Okay... since I may or may not have lost my last ounce of self-control yesterday and may or may not couldn’t help but buy a PS5 with FF16 I may or may not have to make sure that I finish this games main story a bit faster. Not as in doing it in a rush, but as in, not watching those past-storylines that I don’t really care about until I feel like doing it. So... today we only watch the “Down the Rabbit Hole” - Storyline for absolutly non-shipper reasons of course XD (As this is the only chance aside from the final chapter to get Alisa and Rean together...) and then we watch “To your bledded Future” which is a boringisch but also very wholesome.
So lets get the party started!
Tumblr media
I love how we are here to get Lammy back. What would Millium be without Airgetlam? But that is also so typical Cold Steel. Instead of, you know having Millium adjust to a new combat shell or something like that, we just get an Airgetlam back that is... you know the Lammy we all know and love. Because bo even combatshells truly die in the Cold Steel Saga XD
Tumblr media
First try. Last time I played this I so damn desperately tried to get their link-event and I almost failed. This time... the first monster shows up and here we are XD Seriously, I have to admit I am still a bit unhappy about the downgrade from the CS4 link-event... but we got the usual high-five that not just is something those two have always done, but a lot of other ships actually have as their link event. Including Estelle and Joshua. I guess when it comes to this, we can say that Body-contact in some way, shape or form is the deciding factor. Although nothing can beat Millium and Jusis in that regard. They do not just have a double high-five, Millium is actually leaning her back against Jusis Torso and its just so... ♥ That aside, I think going for Alisa and Rean with a “Its like you can read my mind” themen for their Dialoge just eases into how their relationship is portrayed in this game. Which is as “No more word necessary” and that is more than enough for me.
Alright... lets get back to getting back Airgetlam.
Tumblr media
Is there still anyone out there who truly believes I like that sidestory for the plot? ^^’ (Its really not bad tho... its just... I have totally different Priorities XD)
Tumblr media
Reans Priority Ladys and Gentleman. Thats my boy.
Tumblr media
And here we have Jusis Priority Ladys and Gentleman.
After these two scenes following each other I will like singing: “I am sailing! I am sailing!” XD
Tumblr media
Gotta love Millium XD
Tumblr media
Aren't they adorable? I could kiss those two for their cuteness and shippiness ♥ And who would have seen this coming back in the day of CS1 and CS2?
Tumblr media
I am not crying! You are! *sniff*
Tumblr media
And here is the surprise guest for our reunion-party! A dead man sending us one last final message.
Tumblr media
*lol* Now that we have lightened the mood... XD we can tell Millium that we already have far too many girls with huge busting boobies... *breakt into laughter* You really gotta love that girl.
Tumblr media
And he loved him for it.
Tumblr media
One of the many reasons that the Trails-Series brings me so much joy and has the power to love so many amazing (and sometimes not so amazing XD) characters, is because of the fact that moving on to a new saga never erases the existence of the previous characters or what they did and who they are. And over the span of the years that pass us by in game while jumping from Saga to Saga, you have the wonderful opportunity to see those characters that you know and love or come to love eventually grow in every possible way. Physically, emotionally and also their relationships evolve over these times. It leaves me speechless to think, that Schera and Olivert actually truly fell in love with each other, came together and now got to be married and will soon (SPOILER!) add a new member to my dearly beloved Reise Arnor Family... after all we’ve been through and after the events of the Sky Saga. I mean, that is the same woman who once drunk Olivert under the table and now she is going to marry him. It... just makes me so happy to see my beloved characters get the happy ending their truly deserve after watching them grow *cries tears of joy*

It truly was not XD

Cold Steel Northern War plot trailer! If you're not familiar with the series but curious about this anime, this is a good one to watch. There are series spoilers present but they are tolerable (and you have to be partway through cs1/2 or zero to catch them anyway).

Character Analysis: Rean’s Opposite (CS1/2 spoilers)
Okay this gonna be super long and maybe pointless, but Trails is very big foreshadowing and catching people by surprise so I might as get my thoughts out there.
So lots of people talk about Crow and Rean’s differences and insinuate how they're opposites. It's an easy claim to make, but I'm going to argue that while Rean sure has an opposite, it's not Crow. If anything, Rean and Crow are two sides of the same coin.  While there's some opposing traits- they are fundamentally the same deep down. You could write an entire essay on this and their relationship, it’s a very important relationship. But I'm not here to talk about Crow. I'm here to talk about Rean's true opposite.
And that is Elliot Craig.
Tumblr media
There’s a lot of ways they differ in ways that had to be intentional, so I’ll just break it down into categories.
Battle Abilities
I’ll start with the most obvious one - Rean and Elliot are opposites in fights. Rean is a melee DPS/Tank while Elliot’s a Healer/Ranged DPS. In other words, Rean is a sword fighter while Elliot’s a mage.
Their crafts are also pretty opposing too. Both of them get their buff craft early on. Rean’s boosts Strength and gives a little CP (the power meter that goes up when you give or take damage), while Elliot’s boosts defense and heals HP. Rean favors going on the offense, while Elliot favors defense. Their other crafts don’t share much overlap either:
Rean: Physical attacks with an increased chance to unbalance enemies. Meant to lay on the hurt whether it be him hitting as many enemies as possible, causing burn status (which causes extra damage each turn), or even being extra enough to summon his robot friend to step on baddies. In CS2 he even gets a special form that increases his damage output.
Elliot: Only two attack crafts that can’t unbalance enemies. Instead of laying on the hurt, he puts enemies to sleep. His other crafts are a healing craft and one that scans enemy data - in CS2 this gets upgraded to one that will decrease the enemies attack strength when he scans - once again showing he’s favors defense. He’s also the only character with a healing S-Craft.
Even their elements are opposite. Rean’s elements are Fire and Time (aka darkness), while Elliot’s are Water and Space (aka light).
Backgrounds
Obviously with the reveal near the end of CS2 of Osborne being Rean’s dad, CS3 goes more into his past and gives more to say about this. But since that hasn’t been localized, I’ll just keep it to info we know from CS1/2 to spare people spoilers.
First, it’s easy to point out their social classes. Rean is an adopted noble from the countryside while Elliot’s a commoner that grew up in a big city - you couldn’t have more opposite upbringings. Sure, Rean is a commoner by birth, but his birth dad is none other than the most powerful and well known commoner in the country. Meanwhile while Elliot’s dad is a commoner with some status being a Lt. General - it’s much more limited, and only people involved with military are familiar with the name.
Both Rean and Elliot have one sister - Elise is younger while Fiona is older. That makes the relationship dynamic fundamentally different. Both Elise and Fiona really care for their brothers, but Rean is overprotective of Elise while Fiona is the one whose overprotective of Elliot. Even their personalities are pretty different- Elise is a Tsundere through and through. Meanwhile Fiona is sweet and cheerful- but is a force of nature when she wants something. If you talk to the Craigs during the 2nd day of the school festival, you find out even Craig the Red is intimidated by her.
Speaking of fathers, let’s talk about their relationships with their living parents. Elliot’s relationship with his dad is the focus of his character arc. When Elliot first talks about him, you get the impression that he’s an aloof and intimidating figure that’s trying to push Elliot to be like him. However when you actually meet him.......the stories don’t quite line up.
Tumblr media
While Olaf IS a pushy and intimidating figure, he’s also a very loving dad that openly affectionate and tries to be there for his kids. He even makes sure to attend Elliot’s concert at the school festival despite the worsening situation in Crossbell.
Even his pushiness has more noble reasons behind it. If you choose to spend time with Elliot during the bonfire, he says this about what he realized with his dad:
"He wasn't against me going to the music academy because he was against me pursuing a career in music. He didn't want me to lock myself into it. He wanted me to be able to decide for myself just what path I wanted to follow. And more importantly, he wanted me to have the strength to do so, even if people around me tried to stand in my way..."
While Elliot says he’s just speculating, CS2 shows that he’s not far off. After reuniting with his son and seeing how strong Elliot’s become, he tells Elliot he’ll support him in whatever path he chooses. Olaf Craig wants his kids to be independent and strong enough to fight for that independence - even if it means going against him.
Another important element of Olaf's parenting? Is his honesty with his kids even when it’s an ugly truth. One example is when Fiona gets captured, the Craig kids know that if their dad has to choose between his duty and their lives- he’ll choose his duty no matter how much it hurts. Imagine a dad as loving as Olaf having to admit that to his kids. Even if it’s questionable if there’s a point of being TOO honest with your kids (hearing how your dad would let you DIE if necessary couldn’t have helped Elliot’s self-esteem issues, I’m just saying), it’s clear he feels it’s better to be honest no matter what.
Rean’s parents, adopted and biological, are the opposite. Let’s start with the Schwarzers. They are a nice and loving folk when you meet them, not at all intimidating. But they actually have their own ambitions for him, revealed mostly in the Drama CD for the CS1 Ymir trip. Rean’s mom wants Rean and Elise to get married and take over his father’s lordship - even though Rean doesn’t want that. While their intentions aren’t necessarily bad ones (though wanting him to marry his adopted sister is worrying), they're planning to use Rean for their own dreams.
And then there’s the honesty thing. The Schwarzers aren’t honest with their kids. Elise didn’t find out Rean was adopted until she was 12, and as for Rean? They pretend they don’t know who Rean’s birth parents are, but you find out in CS2 they knew all along. This exchange in the drama CD sums up their stance on ugly truths:
Rean: The reason why I want to learn more about myself is because I want to become the real Rean Schwarzer. To be proud as a member of this important family, and at the same time, as a comrade for my friends. Therefore, I must find the truth no matter what it takes. Teo Schwarzer: ...No matter how cruel the truth may be?
This shows Teo Schwarzer’s willing to lie and hide things if he feels the truth is too cruel. His stance is a sympathetic one. He wants to shield their kids from the ugly truths as many parents are tempted to do. But in the end, it just ends up hurting their relationship with Rean more than anything else.
But at least the Schwarzer’s hearts are in the right place, unlike that asshole of a biological dad. Osborne isn’t even subtle about his willingness to use his own son for his ambitions. The moment the civil war ends, he throws his son into helping him conquer Crossbell. As for not being honest, well the fact he hid his identity as Rean’s father until Rean remembered something says it all. While Olaf is raising his kids to be independent adults with a full understanding of the world, Osborne sees his son as a tool that’s on a need-to-know basis.
Personality
It’s pretty easy to see where Elliot and Rean differ in personality. While Elliot’s timid, Rean’s outspoken. Rean enjoys fighting, Elliot would rather play music. Rean notices girls on several occasions, Elliot notices the guys more during swim class. Rean is regularly in the center of attention, Elliot is regularly overlooked both in game, and by fans. The list goes on about how their personalities differ, but there’s one major theme:
If there’s one thing everyone knows about Elliot it’s that he’s obsessive about music. He practices constantly, he’s a perfectionist, his room is full music stuff- literally he’s a stone throw away from being an Ace Attorney character his obsession is so strong. But if you look carefully, it isn’t so much about music as he’s someone who when he devotes himself to something, he does it at 200%. In the last dorm visit while most characters express something vague like “our paths will cross again” or agreements to meet up sometime if you pick them for their closest bond, Elliot says this:
Tumblr media
In other words, Elliot is the one character that REFUSES to break up or put his relationship on hold. He’s too devoted. Notably, you get his first S-Craft only after he decides he’s glad to be at Thors and becomes determined not fall behind everyone.
Rean on the other hand is a drifter that doesn’t commit. He studied 8 Leaves, but he stopped after beginner’s rank. He learned the lute, but he wasn’t serious about it and fell out of practice. He never joins a club (seriously Rean would’ve it killed you to join Fishing Club??). At the end of CS2 when it comes time for Class VII to separate so they can pursue their own goals -- Rean doesn’t really have one, so he stays at Thors, because it’s the only place he ever felt like he belonged.
Character Arcs
Let’s start with where Elliot and Rean were at the start of CS1
Elliot: Pressured to be in the military by his father. Not confident, and a bit at a loss at what his future would be.
Rean: Enrolling in Thors despite it putting his parents out. Fairly confident in pursuing his plan of easing his perceived family’s burden after graduation.
Now look at the end of CS2 where they were at:
Elliot: Enrolling in the Music Academy despite his father’s original wishes. Armed with confidence, he committed to a plan to find a way to use music to help the world.
Rean: Pressured to be in the military by his father. Confidence shaken, at a real loss about his future.
The situations are different obviously, but they basically switched places over the course of two games.  Generally speaking when stories do that, it’s intentional for some reason or another.
What does it all Mean?
Truthfully? It might mean nothing. Or it might not.
It’s impossible to say until CS3 and 4 get released and localized. Maybe Elliot will have an important role to play in the Erebonia arc, or maybe there was a plan and they scrapped it. Or maybe it’s a red herring. With the Trails series, it is hard to tell because they really do like to give hints along the way that you don’t pick up until later.
But I do believe it’s not all coincidental. For one, in the character line-ups Elliot is almost always listed right after Alisa (the designated main heroine) in terms of importance. And second?
Tumblr media
They outright say it in the game.
Thank you all 2 people that read this, this has been my TED talk.

Honestly the more I play Muv Luv Alternative, the more I want something like Trails of Cold Steel Alternative
(only with significantly less pain)
Like Rean post-CSII (*mumblemumbleCSIIIstuffmumblemumble*) suddenly waking up on the first day of school again only with all of the spoilers for the first two games (with some holes here and there - actually considering how muv luv worked and how CS has dating sim mechanics this can work...) and a strong desire to
a) not let Crow die again b) not let Osbourne win again c) prevent the civil war but still declaw the Noble faction
He is basically determined to make Team Olivert actually effective this time instead of that fledgling faction that the big guys acknowledge but don’t actually take all that seriously when it counts.
Except he’s also stuck in CS1 where his classmates aren’t exactly true companions, he can’t freely move about Erebonia, and Valimar’s trial has yet to be done. But maybe he can at least speed things along with the old schoolhouse (Heya there Celine~) and at the very least try to get in contact with Olivier asap and get him on his side (which probably isn’t too difficult except Mueller is more suspicious and of course the quickest way to get to Olivier would be to go through Elise and Alfin and Elise immediately knows that something is up with her brother). He would also probably need to make sure Crow, “Misty”, and later Millium  (and I guess also Thomas and Rosine?) don’t catch on that he knows their plans (or thinks he does anyway because I’m not sure post-CS2!Rean knows a lot of the grander scheme of things. I think he mainly knows Crow will die, Osbourne will not, and Crossbell’s pretty screwed.)
Honestly though with MLA I really liked how Takeru coming back from the future affected his relationships with his squad and how he completely skipped all of the events that made them grow close the first time around, but they still found a way to work through their issues and come together anyway (ironically, a civil war helped!), so I kinda just like picturing an older more mature Rean who’s already been through stuff having to unite his classmates again while already knowing all of their secrets and not really willing to patiently let it all work itself out again (though if nothing else he can at least fix that incident with Alisa).
That and one of the characters in MLA kinda looks and acts like Millium at times (and another like Altina) so that’s probably what inspired like 90% of this rambling ^^”
I am also just a fan of groundhog day loop plots ahaha
