far too old to care about fandom opinions i am an adult with a *sees a take* hm. never mind actually. i am in fact so blessed to have a huge brain and correct inconsequential opinions on fictional characters. there but for the grace of god go i
someone: hey I noticed this thing you did in your writing!
me, kicking my feet up flirtatiously: oh??? do you want to hear my thoughts on why I did that? do you want a play-by-play of the language choices in every related sentence? do you want an exhaustive breakdown of The Themes???
22 - do I know how my fic will end before I start? Usually only roughly; sometimes, not at all, and the fic is done when the fic says so.
29 - I don't really have any of those somehow, but I CAN grab something from my A Little Annihilation sandbox WIP doc that's probably going to be published after some SERIOUS restructuring! (Or not! Who knows!)
“Hey, now. Just ‘cause I never met my father doesn’t mean none of him made it along for the ride. Anyway, moving on - he comes back into the scene and immediately picks up where he left off. And now!” Jay’s long since set down whatever tool he was spinning in his hand - his hammer or his crowbar, he’s no longer quite sure - and finds his hands blurring in the air like turbines as he speaks alongside them. “The guy builds a flying steampunk pirate empire. Unlimited resources! Untold power! Tragic backstory! He’s got all his friends back! Everything is awesome, it’s all set up to go just great, he’s living a life just primed for whimsy - and then what does he do with it?”
“Hmmm… you tell me.” Nya’s laid out flat on her side of their shared crate now, one leg kicked up and the other dangling over the edge. The shadow of her boot swings, a little leathery jungle vine, and casts sharp shadows in the beating sun as she plays along. “What does he do?”
“He fuckin’ wastes it.”
Nya’s sun-blocking salute drops for a second - just so she can use that hand to stifle an exaggerated stage gasp. “No way!”
“Yes way. Yes all the way. Like, that’s the kind of high fantasy fever dream people can only make movies about, but he took one look at it and said, nah, you know what? I’m gonna be a sad sack about it.”
13 - how much planning do I do before writing? Fully depends on what the project is, honestly, although my usual is a rough outline/dump doc and maybe some notes along the way (that's for more comprehensive stuff like OSSAS). When I can get away with it, though, it's a ton of fun to completely wing it.
14 - if I could see one of my fics adapted into a visual medium, which one would it be? You probably saw this coming, but I'd go for OSSAS, specifically IICT(OSC) (although Coughing Up Feathers would be INSANELY fun also!). The greatest praise I ever got on that was a handful of people saying it would be great animated/as an actual part of the show, which... OUGHH.
I've got another ask with 14 in it, so 21 and 23 for you!
21 - have I ever deleted an entire fic scene after hours of work, and if so, why? This happens for pretty much every fic I work on if it happens to start in what I call a sandbox doc, which is where I just start messing around to get a sense of what I'm aiming for. The only specific instance I can recall right now is scrapping a whole scene from If I Can Think (Of Something Clever) where Nya finds out (via eavesdropping on guard gossip) that Nadakhan is explicitly terrified of her. I never actually wrote the gossip parts, to be fair - I only made it as far as Nya dragging a chair over to better listen in and then notes for what she'd hear - but I do still have that document somewhere. It's got some good lines I might have to recycle in other works...
23 - How do I I choose where to end a chapter? I usually don't - it just kind of happens. I can plan all I want for a certain ending, but then I'll arrive at some better place and just go, yeah, that looks good.
7 - how many ideas do I have for fics right now? None besides loose planning for whatever the OSSAS capstone this December is. I'm not counting my two WIPs in this, because once it gets even partially published, it graduates from idea to WIP for me.
15 - how do I come up with my titles? Song lyrics. Except for that one Seabound poem I've got, it's pretty much always song lyrics, just because they're fun and I'm usually listening to music when I write. An Evening With Operation: Cortado is a half-exception - that one was named as an homage to the 2018-19 Fleetwood Mac tour I was lucky enough to attend. I just swapped the group names.
