Re: Em Friedman, I personally always got the impression that they're just a big fan is Aabria cuz I think Aabria was one of their first guests(?) in their TTRPG class
And that's why to me all the coverage about Acofaf, WBN and now Burrows End reads with kind of a biased perspective
Like, I love WBN but as you said, it's not really doing anything innovative per se, and the whole coverage and hype about the Bear episode in Burrows End really made it anti-climactic when the episode aired
Idk, maybe I'm wrong, but a lot of the Actual Play coverage from Polygon (not just Em) seems kind of like D20 and WBN circlejerk while they're more than happy to throw CR under the bus
Oh interesting. Like, I do get that Actual Play is not a particularly massive community and I could see how someone who interviews players regularly might end up becoming close to them and generally that maintaining distance and journalistic integrity is uniquely difficult, but also like. Here's the thing. I know Critical Role is The 800 lb Gorilla in the actual play space; no one else is selling out Wembley Arena. I don't mind if they're not getting the same boosts from publications, because they don't really need it and people love an underdog and all that. It's still not great, that this bias exists, but Critical Role is much harder to keep up with because it is at this point 8 years of content to fully know what's going on in Campaign 3, whereas you could have someone binge watch ACOFAF in a long weekend.
What gets me is that it's not just fawning and biased. It's ignorant of the actual play genre and claiming things that are flat out untrue. "Critical Role isn't as good as Dimension 20" is an opinion. I don't agree with it but it's a valid position for someone to have, and even journalists are entitled to preferences. But like, again: TAZ Balance started at level 1, with the party obtaining a legendary and dangerous artifact at a low level, and it started in late 2014. NADDPod campaign 1 also started at level 1 and ran up to level 20, and it began in early 2018.
Longform D&D/Pathfinder are also not new. Both of the examples above ran over 60 episodes; NADDPod's first campaign was an even 100. Rusty Quill Gaming ran an impressive 218 over 8 years, though they tended to stick to about an hour long per episodes so it's closer to NADDPod in actual hours of gameplay. Obviously Critical Role, while unedited and not a podcast primarily, has had 100+ episode campaigns. All of these were also set in homebrew worlds, though TAZ was extremely loosely based on Forgotten Realms to start, and RQG was essentially a divergent history of our world. So what, precisely, other than the Children's Adventure, makes WBN different? Like...I know fandoms struggle to understand this but it does not do anyone a single fucking favor to act like well-executed but traditional formats (or solid but par for the course work) is radical and innovative genius! It doesn't make me say "wow, WBN is clearly groundbreaking." It makes me go "wow, Polygon's coverage is written by a fucking idiot who's unfamiliar with the landscape of actual play."
What gets me about the bear episode is that it was also, in my opinion, very well-executed and an interesting battle, but it was not like, any different from another battle map except that the production team did a really good job making it slightly gorier than the norm. That's it. And as for the twist...look, again, I'm reserving final judgment, but I keep thinking about this (regrettably it is from Orson Scott Card, who is both a homophobic asshole, and also wrote "How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy" which was my introduction to Octavia Butler and genuinely informs my understanding of the genre to this day):
"If you are using a known foreign language, by the way, take the time and effort to get it right. Among your readers there will always be someone who speaks that language like a native. If you get it wrong, those readers lose faith in you - and rightly so. Wherever you can be truthful, you should be truthful; if your readers can see that you're acting by that credo, they'll trust you, and you'll deserve their trust. But if they catch you faking it, and doing it so carelessly that you can easily be caught, they'll figure that if the story wasn't worth much effort to you, it shouldn't be worth much to them, either. They may still like the story, but you have blunted the edge of their passion."
This is both what I'm worried might end up being true re: Burrow's End (except instead of a foreign language I speak like a native, it's How Radiation Works) but it's also true in that like...all of those longform campaigns? I've watched or listened to them in full. Acting like it's innovation to...do a thing that's been done by so many other prominent actual plays is not even reading to me as bias. It's reading to me as a combination of wildly misplaced priorities (genuinely I think between this and the ask meme I'm like "hmmm have we considered that we're asking a huge amount from a niche medium and acting like it is the responsibility of a bunch of actors with dice to constantly reinvent the artform in which they work and dismantle the kyriarchy and prevent us from getting into arguments with our friends, instead of, as WBN's own page says, play games to make stories out of sound?") and also just. Ignorance. This is a person who is talking about something they genuinely don't know about. Why should I listen? I mean the bias doesn't help, but really it's the ignorance that kills it.

Critical Role - Live Show - 25/10/2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wasn’t sure if I was going to make a post about this but here we are.
I still can’t really believe that I went to the CR live show.
(Somewhat personal) ramble under the cut:
I started watching Critical Role after the first season of the legend of vox machina came out.
I didn’t actually get that far into campaign one before tapping out, but then season 2 of tlovm was released and, after watching and loving it, I decided to give the campaign(s) another go.
This was earlier this year (around Jan/Feb - which is insane because it feels like CR has been a part of my life for so much longer than that), so it’s fair to say I’m a fairly new fan (at least in comparison to a lot of others).
But despite the daunting amount of content, I binged and managed to catch up (I watched all three campaigns as well as most of their other content in time to watch C3E64 live) and the show has become one of the greatest and most reliable sources of joy in my life (which I honestly did not expect but I am so thankful for).
I love this show. I love all three campaigns; all the different characters, the stories they’ve told, the journeys they’ve taken us on. I love this group of people, both on camera and off, who have done such an incredible thing with this show, that I truly did not understand the appeal of or effect of until I gave it a real chance.
Which brings me to the 25th of October. Just over a week before the date, I bought a resale ticket to the CR live show in wembley (for probably far too much money - but no regrets) on a bit of a whim.
It was in a location that worked for me, it was their first international live show, their first live show in so long, and it was at such an interesting and important time in the story for this whole main campaign universe. So everything was telling me to go for it despite never having done anything like this before (which is why I hadn’t even considered it when the tickets first came out).
And it was genuinely one of the best nights of my life. It still feels so surreal that I was there, and got to see them play live, and I got to feel the energy in that arena, because it was all absolutely incredible.
I don’t really know what the point of this post is; I just kinda wanted to get these thoughts and emotions out a little because I’m still thinking about it almost a week later. I am so grateful for this show, these people, these stories, these characters, everything. And I’m so glad I got to experience this at a point in my life when it really does mean so much to me.

World Cup Stadiums
Tumblr media
The World Cup is one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world, with millions of fans around the globe tuning in to watch their favorite teams compete on the world stage. A critical part of the World Cup experience is the stadiums that host the matches, which are often some of the most impressive and iconic structures in the world. Over the years, the World Cup has been hosted in many different countries, each of which has brought its own unique style and culture to the event. For example, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa featured several stunning stadiums, including the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, which was designed to resemble an African pot and had a seating capacity of over 94,000. Similarly, the 2018 World Cup in Russia featured several impressive stadiums, including the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, which had a seating capacity of over 81,000 and was the site of the final match of the tournament. The stadium had undergone a massive renovation in the years leading up to the World Cup, with a new roof, seating arrangement, and other upgrades designed to enhance the fan experience. Creating these massive stadiums is no small feat, and it often takes years of planning and construction to bring them to life. For example, the construction of the new Wembley Stadium in London, which was built to replace the iconic original stadium, took over four years and cost over £1 billion. The process of building a new World Cup stadium can be complex and challenging, requiring significant investment and coordination between multiple stakeholders. However, the end result is often a world-class facility that can serve as a symbol of national pride and a source of inspiration for fans around the world. In conclusion, World Cup stadiums are an essential part of the event's history and culture, representing the best in sports design and innovation. From the futuristic architecture of the Allianz Arena in Germany to the breathtaking natural scenery of the Estádio Nacional in Brazil, each World Cup stadium has its own unique story to tell and has played a critical role in shaping the tournament's legacy.

IPO - Now
Here’s the latest revision of my IPO for the second half of semester 2…
WHITI O REHUA - SCHOOL OF ART Independent Project Outline 213.341 Art Studio Research IPO template: Student Name: Anthony Fraser Student ID: 15221100 Amendment #: 3 Amendment date: 2/10/19 Rōpū Lecturers: Simon Morris & Jenny Gillham
Intent: (50-100 words):
To conduct an auto-ethnographic research-based inquiry into my own family situation, formulating responses that use whatever media seems appropriate. So far this has been photographic, but could use a variety of media. Some media that interest me and seem like they might be fitting of my purposes are print, sound and video. I feel that there is a natural progression from photography to these media, and I imagine that there could be a balance formed between archival material and work that I produce myself.
Background: (200-300 words):
Briefly describe what you did last semester, what you intend to develop from this work, and what (if anything) you are not going to continue to work with.
This past semester I’ve made photographic works that document and respond to aspects of my life that I consider to be quintessential parts of living in New Zealand. This work aimed to investigate aspects of New Zealand mainstream Pākehā culture, and to offer some kind of critique. I’m not sure entirely how successful this was, but as I learned more and developed more work, I became less interested in producing work that claimed any kind of finality in its assumptions, and less overtly critical. My more recent work was responding to everyday views from and within my domestic environment, and I’ve learned that questioning these more personal experiences seems more fulfilling, furtive and genuine than trying to critique larger cultural themes. My plan for the coming semester is to engage with matters that have personal emotional significance for me, and see what happens when I question them openly in a fine art context.
Method and resources: (100-200 words):
What do you intend to make (i.e., painting, sculpture, video, etc., etc.), and how (materials and processes). Do you need an individual studio space or can you use the shared space? What knowledge and skills do you need to gain, and what investigations do you plan to undertake?
I hope to produce photography, print media, and perhaps video and sound works to respond to lines of inquiry. I plan to investigate my own family history, recent and through further generations past, using the family archive and other archives if possible. Works responding to this research will hopefully come together in through an installation-based approach. There are still various avenues I intended to research that I haven’t yet had time for, such as a specific project researching my great-great grandfather’s job as a clown on National Radio. I’ll continue to use facilities all around CoCA, including the photography department, fine arts block, Te Ara Hihiko and perhaps more. I would like to develop my practice to being more installation-based and multi-media if I can find a way of combining these various media effectively. I need to continue my research into theories surrounding documentary, and other disciplines of art-making.
References:
Begin a list of a minimum of 6 references, four of which must be artists or artworks whose work is inspirational and whom you intend to continue to use to develop your own work, and two other references (text, music, film, other writing, etc.) Briefly describe how each reference is relevant to your own intended research.
Reference both texts and artwork images properly: you should use the system recommended for visual material on OWLL, which includes the artist’s name, the date of the artwork and a URL, book or exhibition note.
Edith Amituanai: #keeponkimiora
This book is very powerful. It is a documentary photographer getting to the heart of the politics of representation and taking an ethical approach to their field. Documentary photography has shady roots in New Zealand, and Amituanai is well aware of this. Furthermore, mainstream media organisations wield power when using various forms of representations (editorial, photographic, video), often to great harm. Amituanai is a voice singing another tune to the oft-negative representations of members of her community and communities like hers (non-Pākehā, low socio-economic, etc.). She provides positive images of people, often young people, in her community, gaining their trust, their consent, working with them to produce images they consider to be appropriate, together. She is an actively contributing to the decolonisation of New Zealand fine art spaces, and although this is not hat I intend my work to be about per se, role models like this are always in  my mind whilst I’m making work. I wonder what Sontag or for that matter Spivak would have to say about her work.
Phillip Andrew Lewis: SYNONYM
This body of work responds to Andrew Lewis’ time in a drug rehabilitation centre where in his teens he was forcibly held against his will for 2 years. The organisation that held him is no longer in operation in the USA, but Andrew Lewis returned to multiple sites it used to run rehabilitation centres. Combining found objects, photography, graphic elements and performance-based works based on personal experience, Andrew Lewis has formed a large body of work in response to this.
Andrew Lewis employs a diverse range of media in his practice, which is surrounded by so many contexts. He investigates these physical, social,  political contexts through various ways of making and curating. I plan to use a diverse range of media in my own work also.
Paul Pfeiffer: The Saints
Investigating British cultural identity through the emotionally charged arena of the football field, Pfeiffer manipulates scale in a highly effective manner. Playing recordings from the 2007 opening of Wembley Stadium of the crowd chanting various anthems throughout a largely empty gallery space, the viewer is immersed in the audio aspect of the work. There are some visual components, videos of football fans and matches from around the world, which add new layers of context. Pfeiffer’s careful process of selection will inform how I engage with the spaces I’m using, and which elements of works to include or edit out of installations.
Joanna Margaret Paul & Pascal Harris: Light on Things
This was an exhibition (and publication) of Joanna Margaret Paul’s work curated by her youngest son, Pascal Harris. It celebrates her work and life, yet is simultaneously drenched in the grief of a son for his mother. The exploration of these personal relationships though exhibition and printed matter has helped guide me through my own exploration of these matters in my work this semester.
Rachael Rakena: One man is an island
This and other works of Rachael Rakena have influenced what I’m making. The way she strips back the world that her subjects perform in, adding usually only one contextual element, gives her work a captivating presence. Keeping the strength of these aesthetics in mind, along with the personal nature of the content, will help to show me some direction when making work this semester. One can use personal stories to share ideas on larger narratives.
Amituanai, E. #keeponkimiora. Hastings: Hastings Art Gallery, 2018.
Andrew Lewis, Phillip. SYNONYM. Headlands Center For The Arts, San Francisco, 2017.
Harris, Pascal. Light On Things. Brett Mcdowell Gallery, 2016.
Pfeiffer, Paul. The Saints. The Junction, Engineers Way, Wembley, London, 2007.
Rakena, Rachael. One man is an island. Bartley + Company Art, Wellington, 2009.
In consultation with your lecturer, complete your IPO as following the template above.
Be mindful of the learning objectives for this course:
Students who successfully complete this paper should be able to:
• Outline, develop and undertake an independent project.
• Thoroughly investigate relationships between concepts, media and processes.
• Extend competence in self-directed inquiry and its application to the development of studio projects.
• Present their work for assessment in a considered and appropriate manner and contribute to critical discussion in relation to their own work and that of their peers.
Adhere to the recommended word lengths: your complete IPO should not exceed 500 words, plus references.
This is a document you will be asked to revisit, progress and develop numerous times this year, so always include your amendment iteration and date in the boxes above so you know which version it is.

Raheem Sterling has become a role model for his young England team-mates
The impact of Raheem Sterling was felt long before the start of Friday in Wembley on another night when his star shone brightly. These days it's more than just football.
Friday brought a second hat trick of the month, seeing his goal-scoring skill and ruthlessness in the stadium where he grew up and looking at rebuilt – but something else had been noticed in the tunnel.
At the back of England & # 39; s line waiting to go out was Sterling, animated chatting with two young men taking advantage of his experiences – good and bad. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Jadon Sancho were fooled with Manchester City, joking and giggling, talking about what might unfold against the Czech Republic.
The rise of Raheem Sterling has seen him as one of the best players in the English team. "

The teenagers are relaxed, comfortable in the company from Sterling. The couple, who left with memories in northern London – the promising first competitive international start for the Sancho and Hudson-Odoi debut – remain with Sterling & # 39; s word. That Sancho has never been far from Sterling & # 39; s side in St George & # 39; s Park in recent days has not gone unnoticed.
There is no doubt that Sterling has become a recognizable icon, although he still finds it surreal that he has such an impact on these young careers. Anyway, with 48 caps, he is the newest member of the & # 39; leading group & # 39; of Gareth Southgate and is said to have that role, although he offers wisdom to those who do not want it for him.
Sancho
Sterling, 24, even sent an encouraging text to Mason Greenwood, 17, to Manchester United after his breakthrough in training the first team with the city's rivals
Forget Sterling's goals and statistics for a minute; these are also real signs of their growth to a seasoned professional – someone who is not until December 25.

Sancho in particular may relate to the journey of Sterling. Both left disadvantaged parts of the capital during their teenage years.
With the increased duration, Sterling's figures have improved over the past year.
Another message he tells the children is to ignore bad luck or unjustified criticism.
Supporters shuddered Sterling & # 39; s indecision at Wembley against Slovenia a month later, October 2017, with moans from
The vitriol to Sterling became so intense, and he was noticeable on Premier League- grounds up and down the country that teammate Kevin De Bruyne jumped to his defense.

Sterling was affected by negativity
City and Pep Guardiola worked on his self-confidence and some of them reduced his time on social media.
Sterling used to break the criticism.
He uses his time wisely and only comes out occasionally. He was spotted at the Twenty Twenty Two underground table tennis bar in Manchester & # 39; s Northern Quarter. Sterling goes away from the crowds, and only with his sizes. He took it very seriously.

Sterling unveiled a T-shirt in the honor of Damary after scoring on Friday. & # 39; It was very, very moving and fitting, I know Damian touched his heart & # 39 ;, said his father Tony Dawkins.
Even more moving that it arrived at the new Wembley. Sterling is growing synonymous with the stadium and was even within the age of 12, for its first FA Cup final in 2007, when Chelsea defeated Manchester United. Guardiola & # 39; s side continues to hunt for four trophies.
His intelligence and movement of the ball have improved – partly to Guardiola, partly to Mikel Arteta's training sessions after closing time and partly to Sterling's mini-arena in his backyard. He no longer survives for his purpose.
& # 39; Catch me on the back pole & # 39 ;, could be his motto, with so many goals coming when he taps into low crosses.
Those words of wisdom that have been put into the tunnel from the English Pied Piper appear to be mutually beneficial
Raheem Sterling & # 39; s tribute to field to a youth player who died of leukemia was a & # 39; pleasant surprise & # 39; for the family, the boy's father said last night.
Damary Dawkins died last Sunday, despite having a stem cell transplant shortly before Christmas. The 13-year-old, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of nine, played on the Crystal Palace development team.
On Friday in Wembley, Sterling lifted up his sweater after scoring his score. second goal in the England game against the Czech Republic to reveal a photo of him and Damary.
Damary's father, Tony Dawkins, said: “It was a pleasant surprise. When Crystal Palace played Manchester City, Damary put on his training suit with the Crystal Palace and took a photo to send to Raheem.
Damary had chemotherapy after his diagnosis, but after a relapse in 2018, his family was advised that he needed a donor.
Tony Dawkins thanked the African Caribbean Leukemia Trust for supporting the family. The GoFundMe page set to help the family with funeral expenses has received more than £ 3000 after Sterling & # 39; s moving tribute. Donate to Damary & # 39; s GoFundMe Page Visit

The United States Supreme Court may have legalized sports betting across the country, but the debate over daily fantasy sports continues across the country on the state level. According to the Westchester Journal News, the viability of DFS in New York is up in question after acting state Supreme Court Justice Gerald Connolly recent ruled that such companies “violate the state constitution.” Connolly “ruled in favor of anti-gambling organizations that had challenged the state's 2016 law allowing and regulating DFS, deciding the games directly violate the gambling ban in the state constitution." The state is expected to appeal the ruling, which would allow companies such as FanDuel and DraftKings to remain operating in New York while the court proceedings are worked out. A DraftKings lawyer noted that the expected worst-case scenario for the DFS operator would “involve a referendum so that the state can regulate it.” While none of Tuesday’s elections directly impact the sports betting legislation, it’s a safe bet that in some states, newly-elected officials will play a vital role in implementing legal sports wagering in the next few years.
The Golden State Warriors are planning to move into their new home in downtown San Francisco but are still being ordered to pay $40 million for renovations to Oakland’s Oracle Arena. According to the Associated Press, authorities from Alameda County are in a battle with the Warriors over debt payments stemming from a $150 million bond that the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority took out in 1996 for basketball-centric renovations. The team “agreed to help finance” the bond with annual payments, contributing $7.5 million per year to date, but said that its debt obligations “end when they terminate their lease and leave Oakland for San Francisco and the new Chase Center at the end of the season.” The city and county still have to repay about $80 million in renovation costs at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum for the Oakland Raiders, who are not obligated to help repay the money, even when they move to Las Vegas. Next up on the Oakland pro sports agenda: the seemingly never-ending search for a new home for the MLB Oakland A’s.
Heading into the MLS Playoffs, let’s take a look back at the regular season. According to SportsBusiness Journal, the 2018 regular season finished with an average attendance of 21,873, coming as a 1.1% drop from last year’s number. This comes as the first year-over-year drop for the league in the last five years, though many teams had extremely strong years. Atlanta United FC dominated attendance figures for the second consecutive year, packing Mercedes-Benz Stadium with over 53,000 fans per home match, a 10% increase from last year’s recording-breaking season. The Columbus Crew finished at the bottom of the league in terms of overall attendance and year-over-year drop-off, bringing in only 12,447 fans per match, a nearly 20% slide from last season. Despite being “saved” from relocation to Austin, Texas, the club will need to make some significant changes if it wants to remain in the ever-expanding league; while MLS has no official relegation like European leagues, if it did, the Crew would be the first club in line for demotion.
ISM Raceway in Avondale, Arizona prepares to show off its $178 million facelift. ISM will publicly debut its renovations for its fall NASCAR race, the Can-AM 500, on November 11. According to raceway officials and tech leader ISM, the enhancements were focused on improving the fan experience, including updated areas around the garages and pit row to allow fans to get up close and personal with their favorite drivers and cars. ISM Raceway and longtime sponsor O’Reilly Auto Parts have also announced an expanded partnership that will give O’Reilly sponsorship of the track’s crescent near the new start/finish line. O’Reilly will debut its sponsored branding of the area as part of the track’s Opening Weekend, and host the O’Reilly Auto Parts Pre-Race Party in the crescent on Sunday, November 11 ahead of the Can-Am 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series semifinal playoff race. As the raceway says goodbye to longtime president Bryan Sperber, who spearheaded the renovations, naming rights holder ISM and the track’s other partners should know they are in good hands with new president Julie Giese, tabbed by International Speedway Corp. for the role.
The New York Islanders have announced a partnership with leading education technology company EVERFI that will bring a new digital course to Long Island schools. The Islanders are the first pro sports team to support the Honor Code leadership and anti-bullying initiative. This course takes a practical approach to bullying prevention, empowering students, and teaching leadership skills and ways to help create a positive school environment. "This partnership with EVERFI continues our effort to support innovative ways to educate children, not only on the sport of hockey, but on the essentials of education in the classroom," Islanders President and GM Lou Lamoriello said. "We have never tolerated any type of bullying so to have a program like Honor Code geared towards eliminating the issue directly, made the decision to partner with them an easy one." Honor Code is a digital course that teaches all students to create change, whether they're engaging in bullying, on the receiving end of it or witnessing it in their school. The program, which targets students in grades 8-10, will be available to schools at no cost in Nassau County and Queens. Nearly one in four students between age 12-18 report being bullied according to the National Center for Education Statistics – programs like Honor Code take an important step towards reducing these troubling numbers.
If it wasn’t confirmed before, it is now: London loves American football. According to SportsBusiness Journal, the NFL recently announced its plan to host four games in London next season after successfully hosting three sold-out games at iconic Wembley Stadium in the English capital. All of the 2019 teams have yet to be announced, but it has been confirmed that the Jacksonville Jaguars will be featured in one of those contests. The Jaguars, led by owner Shahid Khan, have made a London their second home, having played a game there in each of the past six seasons. “We’ve staged some mouth-watering matches here and hope to host even more in the years to come as we demonstrate that London is open,” said London Mayor Sadiq Khan. The three games played this season at Wembley averaged 85,031 fans, a very positive sign for the NFL and its International Series. Next year, two games will be held at Wembley and another two at Tottenham’s new White Hart Lane. To date, the Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers are the only teams to not cross the pond to play; we’ll see if that changes in 2019.
Caesars Entertainment is making a serious push into the sports sponsorship world, as seen by its decision to sign a multiyear agreement with Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment. According to SportsBusiness Journal, working with HBSE, the ownership entity of the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils, was a strategic choice for Caesars due to its visibility in the New Jersey marketplace. Caesars Entertainment Senior Vice President of Marketing and Chief Experience Officer Michael Marino noted that New Jersey is “clearly the focus” at this point; the company has plans to use the Devils deal “to drive users to its mobile sportsbook app and guests to its Atlantic City casinos.” Caesars will put its name on a 5,000-square-foot premium lounge in Prudential Center’s main concourse and will receive digital signage around the arena, including on its 4,800-square-foot outdoor LED board. Pennsylvania also presents an interesting opportunity for the casino operator. “Both buildings, both teams and both fan bases make a lot of sense to feed the assets we already have existing and the ones we’re building moving forward,” said Marino. “It just felt like the ideal partner for us." Especially if Pennsylvania legalizes sports betting in the near future.
The WNBA Players Association has notified league owners that it intends to exercise its right to opt-out of its current collective bargaining agreement at the completion of the 2019 season, two years early. According to JohnWallStreet, WNBA players are looking for “full” fiscal transparency, a larger share of league revenues (currently 20%, NBA players receive 50%), better working conditions including travel accommodations, and more marketing and promotion from the NBA (which owns 70% of the league). While the 2019 season won’t be affected, failure to come to terms could put the beginning of the 2020 season at risk. While the WNBPA seeks basic comparable treatment to their male counterparts, according to the WNBA negotiations are going to be “rooted in the financial realities of our business” (i.e. comparable treatment is unrealistic unless you generate comparable profits) and according to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, the reality is that the WNBA has "lost over $10 million every year we’ve operated." In comparison, the NBA generated $7.4 billion last year. If the players choose to walk out, it seems highly unlikely league owners are going to be motivated by an unprofitable business going dark.
FIFA will double the prize money available at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, with $30 million to be split between the 24 teams taking part in next year's tournament in France. FIFA president Gianni Infantino described the move as "a very important message for women’s football.” However, the implementations have been criticized by FIFPro, the global players’ union, as well as by individual players and national governing bodies, with the additional funding viewed as insufficient. Despite the $15 million increase from 2015, the disparity between the available prize money in FIFA’s flagship men’s and women’s tournaments has also seen a significant increase: the men’s edition has seen a 12% rise, taking the overall prize money to $400 million – a gender gap of $370 million. For example, France, the 2018 men’s winner, received $38 million from FIFA, while the winning nation of next year’s women’s competition will take home just $4 million. Despite these changes, it’s clear that on a global basis, soccer is far removed from the goal of equality for all World Cup players, men and women alike.
Tiger Woods’ $9 million clash with Phil Mickelson – labeled "The Match" – has secured Capital One as its title sponsor. The event, the first televised pay-per-view golf product in U.S. history, has a retail price tag of $19.99 as announced by producer Turner Sports. The head-to-head competition takes place November 23 at Las Vegas’ Shadow Creek course, and will be hosted by MGM Resorts International. "Capital One’s The Match," as the exhibition has been christened, will be available through Turner’s B/R Live OTT live-streaming service, and via California-based sister network DirecTV. HBO Sport’s “24/7” will also air shoulder content. Audi has been named the official automotive partner, while AT&T is the official wireless and data services partner. The winner of the event between the two iconic golfers, who hold 19 major titles between them, will receive $9 million, with an additional set of in-game challenges – such as a longest drive competition – raising money for charity. However, early polls indicate a low level of interest among golf fans – unless Woods and Mickelson reach for their own wallets during the round.
