〆 for a childhood story:
Jessica isn’t excited about goddamn Disney Land.
She’s fourteen, she’d rather spend spring break stowed away in her bedroom, listening to music too loudly and hoarding all the good snacks so Phil doesn’t eat them all. But her dad’s boss gave him free tickets, and no, she’s not allowed to stay alone for a week, so she packs a stupid suitcase.
Phil spends the entire week before buzzing and jumping off the damn walls about it. He’s ten, he’s over the damn moon about Epcot and the Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain. It’s all he talks about, no matter how many times she kicks him under the table and tells him to shut up.
“Don’t kick your brother, Jessica,” her mother says, placing the mac and cheese on the table. It’s the night before they have to leave. Jessica should be allowed to stay up late and do whatever the hell she wants since there’s no school tomorrow, but no, they’ve gotta be up at the crack of freakin’ dawn to leave.
“He deserved it,” she says simply, picking at her food instead of eating it. It’s her favorite, but she doesn’t care. She’s pissed off.
Her mother frowns. “No one deserves to be hurt, Jessie,” she says, in that cool, calming tone of hers, the one that gets right under Jessica’s skin.
“What are you so pissy about? It’s not like you have friends to hang out with,” Phil taunts, reaching for his glass.
“Shut up, slimeball.”
“Stop,” their dad grumbles through a mouthful of food. “Or I swear, I will give the tickets to the Johnsons next door.”
“Give it to them, I honestly don’t care,” Jessica shrugs.
“Oh, come on, Jessie,” her mother hugs her shoulders, Jessica pushes her off. “It’ll be fun. We haven’t had a family vacation since you two were babies.”
“Since he was a baby,” Jessica says smugly. “I was six. I remember goddamn Niagra Falls.”
“Language, young lady,” her dad says, shooting her a look.
Jessica glares right back. “I’m not a lady.”
Her dad just chuckles. “Clearly. Despite your mother’s best efforts.” He shares a smile with his wife, reaches for her hand.
“Jessie isn’t a lady,” Phil says, mac and cheese tumbling from his mouth. “She’s an alien freakazoid.”
“At least I know how to eat my food,” Jessica snaps, kicking him again.
“Mom! She kicked me again!”
Her dad raises his hands. “Enough,” he says sternly. “From both of you.”
The table falls quiet, the only sound is clinking silverware and chewing.
“Phil,” their mother says after a moment. “Don’t forget to put new batteries in your gameboy.”
“Why?” he asks, spilling milk onto the table as he grabs his glass.
“For the car ride, stupid,” Jessica mutters. Her dad hears anyway.
“You’re excused, Jess,” he says.
“Fine by me.” Jessica throws down her fork, pushes away from the table.
“If you stop kicking me,” Phil calls as she leaves. “I’ll share with you!”
“Bet I can beat your high score,” Jessica says, smirking before heading to her room, blissfully alone.

“Honey, I’m home!” The young woman toes off her high heels, sighing as he feet lay flat on the floor for the first time in hours. She drops her keys and her purse on the table she keeps in the hallway by the door.
Her roommate floats out of the kitchen, and if he was alive, Liz is sure that he’d be scowling. “You’re late,” the ghost accuses her, and Liz shrugs her shoulders.
“Have you been tracking down another murderer? I didn’t think so. Jeeze, I know it’s a big city and all, but how the hell do we still have such a dense population? It feels like I’m going after a new person every other week.”
Andrew sniffs and shakes his head. “Well, your supper is cold now,” he remarks, turning his back and floating away.
“Thanks, Andy,” she says. It’s nothing for her to put the plate in the microwave and watch it go around for two minutes. “I’m halfway starved.”
“But did you catch the perpetrator?” he asks. Andrew never could resist drama; Liz thinks it’s why he’s stuck around with her as long as he has.
“I did. Police have him locked right up, and I transcribed his girlfriend’s report. I almost wish there were more people who could see ghosts in this town, they should really start hiring them so I don’t have to do it all.”
“Didn’t they offer you a job, though? Several times?”
The microwave dings. “Shut up, Andrew.”

As Ariel gets scooped up she lets out a small squeak. Somehow getting picked up was more startling than the creature. Or maybe it would have happened anyway, given another moment. But in any case she bursts into flames.
“Sorry!” She mentally braces herself for getting dropped. “I really didn’t mean to do that.”
