Adult Byler Teacher Headcanons
They both teach at the same school, maybe even same district.
Will teaches art, namely Drawing & Painting I & II, as well as AP Art & Honors Drawing for Production & Design. (He also was dragged into making props for the school musical, and started/runs the school’s GSA. Mans is SWAMPED)
Mike teaches AP Language & Comp, Creative Writing, Honors English 9, and English 11. He also runs the school’s Literary Magazine, Newspaper, and Yearbook clubs. (Mans is similarly swamped)
(They’re both considering starting up an AV club & a D&D club, but where they’ll find the money or the time, they got no clue)
Will was the reason Mike first explored teaching. Mike had taken his dad’s advice & become a business major, because it can be applied to lots of jobs & is a good way to get a job quick, but… yeah, he fucking hated it.
He ended up taking one of the education courses Will was taking, trying to fulfill some credits & figuring having a class with Will would make it bearable… and then he fell headfirst into teaching
They were hired at the same time. They student taught together, too. A wave of retirees meant most of their colleagues were new blood, like them, and… well, there was A Lot of relationship drama among the staff. It was like a freakin’ soap opera. (Did my high school have a lot of interpersonal staff relationship drama? Yes, why do you ask?)
Will & Mike came out when they got married, because Will wanted to change his last name. By this point, Will was already running the school’s GSA. They hadn’t been very public about their relationship, having been there for The Sanders Affair Of 2006 (and the subsequent divorces, marriages, and affairs that came from said affair) & making the mutual decision to keep their personal lives private… but as their district became less conservative, they hadn’t exactly hidden it, either.
Their friends on the staff all know, & some are close enough friends to get invites
Will had gone by “Mr. William” for the vast majority of his career, so it wasn’t a huge shift for his students or anything.
Mike’s nickname is just “Wheeler,” a similar sign of affection—at least, to his face.
(His students call him “Hot Wheels” behind his back)
(Will is well aware of this, & endlessly amused)
Will’s hair has gone entirely grey. (Lonnie’s genetics, rip). Post-covid, he uses blue light glasses… unlike mike, who needs glasses full-time. (Will teases him about this quite frequently)
Mike finishes growing his hair out, but ditched the bangs. He’s one of those teachers who always has his hair in a severe ponytail (he likes manbuns, too, but you wont often see him with one bc We’re At Work, Will, I Must Be Professional)
They Do Not Talk About The Mullet Era
Or The Bowl Cut For The Entirety Of The Childhoods
They have matching rings, customized replicas of the One Ring bc they’re both geeks. They’re engraved to say “crazy together” in elvish. Technically these were their engagement rings… and also the rings they used when they got a domestic partnership, and also the rings they used in their wedding ceremony. For a long time, they wore them like necklaces tucked under their shirts (bc the Mike in the Math department & Sydney from Social Studies are MASSIVE gossips, and also bc LoTR is iconic & these two are cheesey af),
They started wearing them openly when Will changed his last name, though.
Will & Mike are the teachers who let students eat lunch in their classrooms. The ones who invite them in during free periods. The ones who hear about the shitty chem teacher, the asshole ex, the awful divorce, the toxic friend group, the impending move. They’re the ones who collect & display dozens of senior photos, whose hands cramp from writing yearbook messages, and the ones whose students will remember years later. They’re the ones who keep in touch—they get wedding invites and scattered letters and life updates.
Because they’re the ones who remember what it’s like to be 14, 15, and feeling like the world was about to end. They remember the bullies. They remember the isolation. They remember how awful it feels to grow apart from the people you used to hold dear, and how much they hated high school.
It’s why they love being teachers, exhausting as it is. They’re the adults they didn’t get in high school, despite their parents’ best efforts—they get to be the support they desperately needed. They get to watch their kids grow, and its so, so satisfying to know they’re giving the kids better than what they had.
But most importantly? They’re happy.

you know what, fuck self control, what kinda English majors they'd be based on my time as an English major
Alex struggles a bit with sussing out deeper themes sometimes but damn are they good at discussing the aesthetics of the works.
Anxious Guard never clearly makes their point in argumentative essays. Takes creative writing classes but never commits to the degree itself, worries about it being a "useless" degree.
Avery is more cold and analitical in their analysis of the text than most people are. Often points out flawed relationships and acts as if one character is getting taken advantage of, it's that character's fault becuase the problems are "obvious."
Bailey gripes about the price of textbooks (don't we all?) and starts buying and selling textbooks themself as a way to make a quick buck and undercut the University. Middle of the road essays. Doesn't give a shit, just make their passing grade and moves on. Fucker is selling essays that get top marks. Has some blackmail on some of the professors.
Briar propositions the professors for better grades. Half the time doesn't even need better grades, they just want to make the professors squirm. Does the same with their fellow students, exchanging sexual favors for essays and test questions. Always focuses on the sexual aspect of any works they have to analyze.
Darryl works so hard, bless them. Often uses the University provided services to help with their essays. Studies poetry but hardly ever writes their own.
Again, Doren is in English education but they also take loads of poetry and drama classes. Works in the tutoring center. Worked for the essay revision service for a bit but didn't stay on for personal reasons.
Eden in Victorian lit, Eden in Vioctorian lit, Eden in Victorian lit!!!! It just feels right to them. Struggles with other classes but Victorian lit comes to them easy.
Harper always praises the moraly dubious and/or unreliable narriators. Just, how they're written. Not their actions, no, they would never. Don't believe them. Likes medical settings and anything thats a bit of a trippy read.
Kylar is a lil poetry major. Always writes the most sappy love poems. Turns every assignment into a love poem, somehow. All their poems have an underlying theme of obsession, and they're the only one who doesn't pick up on it.
Landry is very middle of the road. Doesn't stand out. Midling grades. 100% lifting the test answers from the professor's offices. Hangs around th campus coffee shops. Gothic lit enthusiast.
Leighton likes all those "taboo" classics and loves driving group conversations to those topics. "Helps" freshmen who have to take their English 101. Works for the university helping people write essays. Actually good at their job, even if there have been some complaintes about them acting a little inapropriately, all rumors that get brushed aside.
Niki is so fucking good with imagry, it's a little scary.
Quinn doesn't even try. They just costs by, and still make solid grades. Has been known to dominate group discussions. Often wins debates.
Relaxed Guard plays devil's advociate all the goddamn time. Doesn't even believe half the shit they say and write, just does it to see if they can pull it off.
Remy is cut and dry. Often pointedly ignores symbolism. Often hangs around the library, but it's unkown what they fuck they're doing there because they're never studying or looking for books or any of that, really.
Robin focuses on children's lit. Very good student, works hard, always starts on essays right when they get them.
Sydney is doing too much. Creative writing degree, focuses on religious symbolism and works. Works in the library. Goes to office hours. Takes on extra assignements. Regular at all campus coffee shops.
Vet Guard is that one person who always focuses on battles and wars. Picks their side on debates and will not change their opinian for anything.
Whitney bullshits their way through essays and class discussions and it fucking works. Hardly ever shows up to classes. Somehow still passing.
Wren bounces around. Mostly in the creative writing department. Chooses classes based on what they find interesting insted of focusing on getting a degree. Loves the poetry classes, tares Kylar's poems appart in group crituqe. Works in the coffee shop in the library, scribbles lil one off poems on napkins. Also writes tiny poems on the paper cups along with their number, handing them off to customers with a wink.

my two cents.
I finished the second season of The Bear. Here are my big thoughts.
I'm really glad a lot of the older cast got to thrive, like Tina and Richie. It's a perfect example of how it's never too late. Which I think is needed in a society that puts a lot of stock into succeeding while you're young.
The new restaurant is fine. Lovely. I'm glad they have a sandwich window to keep the OG stuff, but I will miss the rizz, as the kids say, of The Beef. It had personality, history. I feel like I would be able to go into The Beef and feel completely at home. The Bear? I'm not sure. The word "gentrification" bounced around in my head a lot, and I don't know how to feel about it. Maybe they'll touch on that in later seasons?
WATCHING TINA KILL IT ALL SEASON WAS LIKE WINNING THE LOTTERY. SHE FOUND HER GROOVE, BABY.
Richie was the season for me. Tina was great, of course, but the growth that Richie went through, the fact that he found something to care about, and he was good at it. Ugh. A+ all around. "Forks" was my favorite episode of the whole season.
I wrote a post about the Christmas episode. Wow. Stellar. Gut-wrenching. Hard to fucking watch. I was screaming, "Everyone needs therapy!" the entire time. Definitely one of the best TV episodes of all time. Emmy winner for sure. I'd bet my life on it.
The Richie/Sugar mended relationship arc was all I needed.
The Richie/Sydney mended relationship arc was all I needed.
I just really loved Richie this season, okay? My boy is learning how to respect women and not say the R-word. We love to see it.
I don't eat omelets usually. I've eaten two in the past 12 hours.
The Carmy x Claire arc, for me, was annoying. Not because I didn't like Claire – I didn't love her, but I did like her, especially her relationship with the family – but because it was just so...not needed? Of course, you don't start a brand-new relationship when you're trying to open a restaurant. CARMY KNOWS THAT SHIT. WHY? WHY? Being a chef is one of the hardest jobs to have a work/life balance with. Even I know that, and I'm nowhere near the hospitality industry! I feel like the team could've come up with more creative emotional obstacles for Carm, is all I'm saying.
I knew they were gonna do something with Marcus and Sydney. I knew it, and I couldn't watch my babies go through that. I love their friendship, and I think they'd be cute, but if that's the way the story's going, I'm going to need a little more convincing.
Favorite cameos: Bernthal (obvi), Colman, and Poulter.
The Donna/Pete scene in the last episode was...so good. So, so good. I love Pete.
And finally:
I am surprised to say this, but I am completely neutral about the Syd x Carmy situation. I can see it going either way, and I'd be fine with it either way. As a recovering Tedbecca fan, I thought if I didn't see it, I'd just be protecting myself from another cruel showrunner (I am actually very mad at Sudeikis for the obvious trolling), but I was just neutral. I'm not going to say I don't see it, I totally do. The Chef Kiss (cute ship name!) fans have some valid points, and I hate that the antis make them feel bad. It's unnecessary. And I hate that romance is seen as Less Than in movies and TV shows nowadays, and I will write my thoughts on that later. Because I have a lot of them.

The Bear and the daily struggle of leadership
Look, we all know it, there are tons and tons of things to love about The Bear. The sharply drawn characters, the way it deals about trauma and addiction and what makes family and community.
For me personally though, the thing that makes it the most special is the way it portrays the difficulty of leadership and building a good work place.
I seem to have watched very few tv shows or movies that aren’t about the military that actually takes a long, hard look at this, and that’s usually through an ultimately heroic lens. Though of course, one could say that working in the food service industry is a lot like doing battle, but that’s another discussion. Fact of the matter is that a lot more of us are gonna to go through a kitchen than active duty.
I’ve been a union rep and am still active in the politics at my place of work – and I also write a lot about leadership and management in my current job – so this shit is important to me, and the Bear does it so fucking well y’all. Like so fucking well.
In the Bear we’re shown three different sort of leaders. Mikey, Carmy and Carmy’s former boss in New York. Or what I’d for the purposes of this will call leading through friendship, leading through respect and leading through fear.
Mikey makes confidants of his employees, just like he makes best friends with everybody. That inspires loyalty for sure, but he also does not help them grow, in fact more than once he causes them to demean themselves. Carmy’s former boss pushes his employees to offer their absolute best, becoming the best that they can be, but he also bullies them so terribly that they leave his kitchen traumatized, and gives Carmy the desire to do things differently. Not put others through that.
Honestly, it's amazing how much leadership skills get undervalued considering how many of us have tried what it feels like being at the mercy of a bad leader. Just because you’re good at your job, does not automatically mean you’ll be a great leader of people. A common misconception, one that I see a lot of in my current industry, and other high pressure and/or creative industries.
But in the Bear, Carmy does actually does make a decent go at it. He proves himself to his employees, teaches them new skills - from his second in command Sydney to the fresher Marcus, delegates responsibility, lifts them up when they fuck up, but he is also willing to assert his position in the hierarchy. He really does so much right, shows that he does seem to have the aptitude for it.
And he also fails. Fails hard.
Because leading is fucking difficult. And that really is the trick here. I always wanna tear my hair out when people act like whipping an organization or a company back into shape is just about instituting a few new codes of conduct and get rid of one bad apple in the basket.
Sure, those things will help, they’re good first steps, but leadership is putting in effort every day. It’s consciously making the right choice all the time. Because falling back into known patterns is so easy when things get tough.
When Carmy gets put under real, serious pressure, when shit hits the fan, he falls back into what he’s seen before. Screaming, berating, bullying. Because that’s easier. Because he’s human, and even the most well-intentioned people fuck up.
Carmy’s lucky that he has put in effort before that happens. He’s given his employees a taste of what kind of leader he can actually be. Given enough that they’re willing to come back.
And fuck, I can’t wait to watch the next season to see what kind of leader he’ll be now with that vote of confidence.
Hopefully his journey can inspire others like him.

Making Your DJ Playlist for the Party: Party Arrangements
Organizing a party is a difficult task. Numerous elements need to be taken into account, from selecting the ideal theme to forming the guest list. It's the music, though, that has the power to really make or ruin your gathering. Hence, employing a pro DJ becomes necessary! Whether you're planning a classy corporate event or a crazy birthday party, having a talented DJ on hand will guarantee that your guests have an unforgettable evening. This blog post will cover party planning in detail and walk you through the process of making a playlist that will be talked about at your next gathering. With Party DJ Hire Sydney, let's get set to dance the night away!
Draw out a guest list.
The first thing to do while organizing a party is to invite people. This important job helps you decide on everything from venue size to food and drink numbers and lays the groundwork for your entire event. Think about the kind of party you want to throw and the guests you wish to invite first. Could it be a small party with close friends or a big celebration? Start writing down names as soon as you have an idea.
Also take into account your space constraints. When choosing your guest list, keep in mind if your venue can only hold a specific amount of people comfortably. Any unique needs or preferences that your guests may have, like as food restrictions, dietary requirements, or even musical tastes, should also be taken into account.
In order to allow visitors to RSVP and give you enough time to make the appropriate arrangements, make sure you send out invites well in advance. If digital invites better fit your event's style, you can still go conventional and send paper ones.
Select an event theme.
Your party's overall atmosphere can be established by your choice of theme. Your guests will be talking about it long after the event has ended because it brings a fun and exciting element. Think about your visitors' interests and preferences when choosing a theme. Would they rather have a more current look or are they liking nostalgic vibes? After you have an idea in mind, explore as many different ways as you can to make that topic come to life.
Make sure your decorations match your selected theme, as they are essential to creating the mood of any party. Everything, even the table settings and lighting fixtures, should accentuate the mood you wish to achieve. Consider using vibrant leis and decorations resembling palm trees for your beach party theme if it's a tropical one. Neon lights and cassette tape decorations are great for a 1980s throwback party.
Arrange and embellish
Party décor is a fun and creative way to create the ambience and mood for your guests. Your choice of décor may really make a difference, whether you're throwing a sophisticated cocktail party or an exciting dance party.
First, decide on a theme for your party. This will influence the decor you choose and help you achieve a unified design. For instance, to create the illusion of an island paradise in your area when holding a tropical luau, use vivid colors, tiki torches, and inflatable palm trees.
Subsequently, consider the many aspects of your location. Use striking decorations to create focal points, including balloon arches or bold centerpieces. For a cozy and inviting outdoor atmosphere, hang paper lanterns or fairy lights.
Don't overlook the table settings! Select dinnerware, napkins, plates, and linens to go with your theme. Include unique elements to make each visitor feel unique, such as personalized place cards or themed drink stirrers.
Organize your efforts.
Choosing the appropriate activities is essential to keeping your guests entertained and involved throughout the evening, whether you're throwing a lavish event or a laid-back backyard get-together.
First things first, think about your guest list's demographics. Do the majority of them enjoy dancing young adults? Or maybe parents who need to find some kid-friendly entertainment? Being aware of your audience will enable you to adjust the activities to suit their tastes.
Consider scheduling a brief dancing session with a qualified instructor for an enthusiastic group of people. Depending on the mood of your party, this might be anything from hip-hop to salsa. This is a great way to start a conversation and will also get folks moving and grooving.
Set up lawn games like giant Jenga or cornhole if you have an outdoor area accessible. These timeless games never fail to ignite everyone's competitive spirit and offer hours of entertainment to adults and children alike.
Provide spaces set out for card or board games so that visitors can congregate and mingle if they're looking for a more low-key affair. This enables people to take part in friendly competition and have lighthearted talks.
Remember to include activities that involve music! Get a karaoke machine or make your own DIY photo booth and decorate it with themed decorations. Over the course of the evening, these interactive features will keep guests engaged and provide them with photo opportunities.
Tumblr media
Decide on a song.
Consider your guest list after that. Across what age range are they? Which music genres do they prefer? Selecting music that will captivate all listeners and keep them dancing all night long is crucial.
Don't be scared to change things around! Mix up your playlist with songs from different eras and genres. This will ensure that there is something for everyone and satisfy a variety of tastes.
If you're not sure where to begin, think about working with a professional DJ that caters to events just like yours. The ability to read a crowd allows a DJ Hire to pick music that will keep everyone dancing.
It's important to remember to make seamless song transitions. Without any abrupt tempo shifts or startling transitions between songs, you want your playlist to flow naturally.
assemble drinks and food
It's time to make sure your visitors are nourished and watered after you have handled all the party's logistical details. A well-stocked bar and a delectable food buffet are necessities for every successful celebration.
Think about the party's theme when selecting the meal. Grilled vegetables, hot dogs, burgers, and cool salads would be ideal for a laid-back backyard BBQ. Consider serving classy canapes or perhaps hiring caterers to handle the food for a more formal event.
Remember the beverages in addition to the delicious meal selections! Make sure you stock a variety of alcoholic beverages to suit a range of palates, including wine, beer, and spirits. Offer non-alcoholic alternatives as well, such as delectable mocktails or reviving water with fruit extract.
Make sure you have enough glasses and cutlery for everyone who will be there as part of your preparations. To ensure that guests' drinks stay cold during the event, it's also critical to supply an ample supply of ice buckets or coolers.

Random but do you know why actors pay their lawyers a set percentage of their earnings? I thought lawyers were paid by the hour and this seems to be a strange outlier in the legal industry that very much benefits lawyers but not necessarily actors...i saw sydney sweeney saying she pays her lawyer 5% of all her take home pay.
and why do so many actors, including non A list ones, have business managers? it just seems a bit redundant if youre not Zendaya and another drain on earnings
Oh! Honestly, I didn't know they did. That's interesting, and sounds more like what an agent would do than a lawyer (although agents usually do [and should imo] have legal backgrounds themselves). Entertainment lawyers are generally handling negotiations, contracts and managing taxes for clients, but they can do more than that too like connect clients to each other or to different projects.
My mum's an indie producer, which I've talked about a couple of times on here, and two of her current projects were actually ones that her lawyer (who she's had for about 20 years) linked her to. He was / is the IP lawyer for those projects and when the creatives were looking for a producer, he thought my mum would be a good fit and so rang her to connect them. With those projects now he gets a percentage fee because the deals went ahead (he also linked her to one that didn't go ahead a few years ago, which he took no fee for), but it's only for those two projects and not for the rest of her production slate (he just gets his regular flat fee for those).
If Sydney Sweeny's lawyer's getting 5% of all her take home pay, I'd imagine it's probably a situation like that where they've connected her to either other clients or projects that have been important in moving her career forwards. It's hard to say though, I could be wrong.
As for business managers, I think they're pretty valuable for anyone in the creative industries and I'd lowkey kill for one, haha. Just speaking personally, y'know, I'm an author with one book out and about twenty short stories and a few optioned scripts, and even I've already got a team with an agent and an accountant.
I manage my own schedule though, as well as most of my contracts (my agent only reads high value ones aka book and screenplay contracts; all my short stories, freelance writing, workshop teaching, reading events and festival appearance contracts I manage myself), event negotiations and liaising, and income/outcome spreadsheets before I send them to my accountant. It's a lot of work, even at my low level of doing it, and it'd be way more intense as even a jobbing actor when you add in balancing multiple production schedules (even if they're only doing a couple of episodes of a few different shows - managing that schedule and script changes and fittings can get messy fast!) and partnerships and social media to the mix. I don't fault any of them for having a business manager at all. In some ways they're probably more valuable than a few other roles an actor might have on their team.

[ Tom Sturridge, male, he/him ] whatever you think you know about FORREST TURNER, the 32 year old, DEMISEXUAL, NEW COMER, it is likely time for you to start reconsidering. the rumored HELLHOUND is often described as SELF-ASSURED + PERSONABLE, but don’t let them fool you; they can also be MELODRAMATIC + HEADSTRONG, which often has them regarded as the WAYWARD. they are a EMT at NEW HOPE HEALTH CENTER, but it’s also said they are a N/A within the N/A. whatever you hear, you can’t deny there’s more to them that meets the eye, and it’s time we start uncovering the truth.
(tw for dead animals - specifically roadkill and taxidermy, near death experiences, and vague descriptions of major injury)
Name: Forrest Ashley Turner Nickname(s): n/a Age: 32 Title: The Wayward DOB: November 15th Gender Identity: Cismale Sexual Orientation: Demisexual Relationship Status: Single Occupation: EMT (Paramedic)
& Appearance
Height: 5′9″ Hair Color: Black/Brown Eye Color: Blue Distinguishing features: typically wears all or mostly black in what could be referred to as a gothic style Tattoos/Piercings: he has his ears pierced but he never wears any jewelry in them anymore
& Personality
Negative Personality Traits: melodramatic, headstrong, opportunistic, indecisive, short-tempered Positive Personality Traits: self-assured, personable, passionate, creative, independent MBTI: ESTP Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
& Background
Forrest had never lived in one place for more than a few years, constantly moving around the country even as a child. His mother went through places and people and jobs as easily as most people went through paper towels or clean laundry. Home was never a place for him, he felt no deep connection to anywhere he moved save for a few years in Arizona when he was in middle school, and when his mom died the year after he graduated high school it was as if he’d been set adrift in a vast ocean with only a few tethers to cling to.
One of those tethers was a long-time friend and “pen-pal” he’d be writing to - first on paper and then via email since it was easier than constantly updating addresses - since the age of thirteen. Their name was Sydney and miraculously he had managed to keep their contact constant even until adulthood, catching snippets of their life through hasty emails and the occasional card.  Besides his mother, they were the only person they’d known longer than two years up until her death had turned everything on its head.
His life continued in limbo for the next six months, unsure where or even how to settle down after a lifetime of jumping place to place. He stayed put in Seattle where his mother had died for a while, taking up odd jobs and trudging through life like a zombie until he saw an advert for a summer EMT course and decided to take it. As the first thing that had peaked his interest since he’d entered his free-floating limbo, it seemed worth a shot and Sydney wholeheartedly agreed when he mentioned it to them in passing.
The course sparked a new impulse - a drive to do something more than float. It was a new era in Forrest’s life and, much like his mother, he felt the need for a change of scenery. Moving to North Carolina to room with Sydney and finish the schooling needed to become an EMT was the best decision he’d ever made. A new tether formed to keep him ashore for the time being.
When Syd started getting serious with their boyfriend, he moved out and got another place with a friend from work. It was a good arrangement, they both kept the same weird hours and often worked the same shifts so they were able to discuss the more bizarre cases they encountered with no preamble.
Forrest’s roommate became another tether to keep him in North Carolina and then, he became an even stronger tether as their relationship became romantic. It was an odd sort of thing for Forrest considering he’d never really had too many romantic feelings for people previously, but he didn’t let that stop him. He was happy and content and home was a place and a person instead of some vague idea.
(tw for dead animals, near death experiences, vague descriptions of major injury) He had been fascinated by death and the aftermath from a young age. Sure, he loved helping to keep people out of the ground most days, but the thought of dying had never been particularly terrifying. Graveyards were gorgeous memorials to what came before and he had a very similar mentality toward taxidermy. Which he picked up as a hobby in his late teens and hasn’t stopped doing since.
He started practicing on roadkill (that he chose selectively, bc rotting animals is a no go), which was ironic considering he got hit by a car in his late twenties. For all intents and purposes he should’ve died bleeding and broken out on the side of the road, but he woke up a week later at home with barely a scratch on him and a concerned supervisor - and an even more concerned boyfriend - wondering where the hell he’d been.  (end tw)
That was only the beginning of the weirdness, however, as he began to lose chunks of time every few days and was told by friends and neighbors that he’d been seen places he didn’t remember going. It was beyond upsetting, but he kept it to himself, not wanting to lose his job or the stability he’d held onto for the first time in his life.
It snapped his carefully cultivated tethers and sent him free-floating all over again, only this time he couldn’t mourn the loss.
The hellhound - the entity he’d eventually come to understand was the only reason he was still alive - stayed undetectable for almost six months while Forrest tried and failed to keep himself together. His partner was worried and he was barely hanging onto the job he loved so much and when it all came crashing down, the hellhound revealed itself. At first, he was sure he’d finally lost it completely, but there were some things too real and yet too fantastical for explanation.
Forrest moved to Creation Peaks feeling so very much like the person his mother had been - adrift, changing lives whenever things didn’t go to plan, alone. He didn’t know why, exactly, he chose that location but he had a feeling the hellhound had something to do with it. Even still, that didn’t deter him. A fresh start was a fresh start and if it meant he kept his body’s cohabitant happy, maybe that would be to his advantage. His bond with the beast wasn’t strong - the grief he felt over the life he lost too intense to allow anything but anger and disbelief, but his knowledge of it had soothed some of the wounds in his psyche. Enough he was slowly returning to some semblance of normalcy.
& Random Headcanons
He has a cat named Sundae. Her acquisition was not intentional but he doesn’t have the heart to tell her she’s not supposed to live in his apartment. Forrest has never had a pet before.
A lot of his taxidermy consists of restoration of old pieces and adding a bit of whimsy to them because he thinks it’s a real shame to let them rot away in a box. He sometimes does them as commission items as well for friends or for a bit of supplemental income, but he doesn’t want to do any more than that lest his fun hobby become a chore thanks to capitalism.
He doesn’t kill any animals for his taxidermy nor does he approve of the practice. It’s more a way to give their physical form new life and purpose once they’re no longer using it. Natural causes only.
His mom’s ashes are in a little necklace urn he wears around because she wanted to never stop traveling. He doesn’t wear it as much as he used to.
He cycles between having many personal items and purging them to the kind of minimalism he grew up with moving so frequently.
& Wanted Connections

ill add more later, pls feel free to dm if you wanna come up with something together too!

2.05 - The Indicator
This is a perfect display of Alias by-the-numbers back in the S1/S2 era. Definitely more of a season 2 era type of filler. So many things to uncover and do properly, but it seems to me they have a hard time focusing and the drama/action/suspense/great entertainment value mix does not quite add up excellently very often. The story isn't intriguing actually. This time, Sydney, among other things, discovers that she might have been programmed to be a spy at an early age. Sloane, on the other hand, is doing a remarkable job at fooling everyone around him in order to truly make them keep believing Emily truly is dead. Although, looking at it now, Ron Rifkin's performance makes the most of the job effortlessly, since in reality, The Alliance is not everyone and can't be fooled by Sloane that easily. It's a bit of a stretch and naive.
The fact that he's being closely monitored by them and even for someone as sharp, emotionally focused and ... well... cold and quite sociopathic, makes it kinda cheap. But they do this kind of thing all the time. Brilliance and downright ridiculousness are always playing a tug of war in this show. Moments between Sydney and Jack are, yet again, tiresome with all the ups and downs and deceit that needs to be cleared out of the way, rebonding and then pulling apart again... yawn. They really test my patience. I pushed for it a lot since it was always one of my favourite tv shows, since elementary school. Will was in the episode and basically had nothing relevant to say. Good having him around, but he seems to be too chill for a smart guy who was presented as a dynamic reporter in a kinda hectic environment and after digging deep into the SD-6 storyline and having his life completely destroyed in order to actually keep his head, now sitting in the park with Syd behaving like it's all a chit-chat thing. And most of the time he's like that when he's with her.
Sydney takes up a lot of space in the show which is just fine, but the lack of focus and stories that intertwine, or better yet, get in the way that don't add much to the actual character-driven atmosphere they should be aiming at leaves a lot of the characters being seemingly flat and terribly under-written. Besides Sloane and Jack, which both perfectly capture every moment they're in, as well as being interestingly conceptualised, written, played out to the finest detail. Vaugh is always problematic since he fits the role perfectly well, but the character, even with everything that could be used to reinforce his role in the show crumbles under the weight of Vartan doing an actually great job at trying his best not to be bad at acting and keeping up with the rest of the cast. But that leaves us with a major romantic interest/later a romantic partner as well that appears dull, terribly understated at times and even the two of them will later make for a boring couple. Dixon was never given a true chance to be seen as a relevant character, so any time they would focus on him turned out to be an unnecessary route, so they kept it very, very low-key, learning from that mistake. Francie is as good to have in the show as Syd's friend as she's equally redundant most of the time.
Some storylines seem as if they were envisioned very early on - the Muller device and everything. But this all just seems so overwrought, pre-calculated in the most offending kind of a way with cheap shots at drama & sweetness and unnecessary action-packed (sometimes more, sometimes less) minutes chunking off pieces of every episode, one after another. The titles are almost insignificant most of the time, because Alias is just as poorly creatively focused and panned out and set into motion as is my trainwreck rambling and writing, journaling, whatever... Actually, what pisses me off is that it is filled with potential and incredibly well-executed moments and episodes but the filler is all over the place since so much of it feels like something that does not concern me as a viewer and to make matters worse, just gets me all whiny and bitchy since they kill my mood most of the time I watch it with their messed up pace. And that's 90 % of the time.
When they keep it down a bit, imagine the horror! It's even more tiresome. So much of season 4 really got me into a cringe-fest mode. They don't know how to handle the storyline in its entirety since its conception and on top of it, they have trouble writing an episode in a wholesome, focused way. It ends up trying everything and anything, using its charms to get away with too much as it is, and has no depth whatsoever. What truly displays the strength of Alias is the strength of the entire cast, how driven everyone working on it can seemingly be, with episodes that are a blast truly being a blast (still waiting for those to watch them, any time soon). Ranting and rambling. I can't focus because this is truly starting to irritate me as shit. And I don't feel like getting back into anything else right now. Simply because I have difficulty expressing myself and I'm not articulate enough... blah blah blah... now I gotta watch a very emotional scene between Syd and Jack. Wow... never happened before.
They really get on my nerves. I don't know if this episode is a 5, a 5.5 or a 6 since I can't even remember anything that happened so far. Oh, Irina's facing trial - death penalty. I know how that went, but it's... and she wasn't even cleverly written at the beginning. People tend to forget that. They're aiming at "observing, creepy and filled with subtle meanness (whatever that's supposed to mean in my book - I wouldn't say subliminal audacity!). Things are getting very boring in Aliastown. And Vaughn being part-time missed in season 5 is also due to the changes that the show underwent that turned it into a silly, grotesque version of what it's (or their misjudgment of was)  supposed to be. No, the finale really didn't cut it. Just like Chosen it’s criminally overrated.
The episode will end up as a low 6. It is just not written well. Considering the season, the plot, the characters involved, everything they had at their disposal, it was really not a good time to get complacent. It all just seems too familiar. Not in a sense of having seen it all several times throughout the years, but as a rewatching experience, it does leave a lot to be desired whereas on the other hand, I really understand all the people with their negative first reactions. Come to think of it, why did everyone have such a strong negative reaction to season three? I recall it being more focused, it didn't slip as much, can actually be taken for what it is and it really felt enjoyable. The part that actually kills the mood is way too much dialogue that does not serve the series well. This episode was not a perfect display of that at least. But most of the time, they go back and forth with overlapping scenes, describing the mission that most of the time no one cares about to begin with and the plot is made out of so many scattered bits and pieces throughout all the episodes that pile up so that you can't really know what purpose it’s serving and what's mere filler. Frequently they expect you to care about so much of what is taking place that they fail to realise you are not actually invested in these "minor" aspects that they centre the action around (and in 90% of the cases, it's either for the fun of little action, playing dress up, great score and soundtrack choices but it also seriously damages the show as time goes by because they shouldn't rely on it as much since I believe many of us aren't interested in what has to be done, obtained/retrieved, how things work, how to bypass it all, the tricks, the schematics, techops and whatever they keep throwing around... seriously, I have no idea what they're talking about and by the time we're on the spot and things start are set into motion, I almost don't feel like I'm watching the same show!). Something needs to be done right, most of the time Syd does it right, sometimes she ends up getting caught, sometimes it's kinda serious, things work out just fine and any complications that occur are handled in a naive, way too convenient way. That's bad, considering how resourceful Sydney is.
Cliffhangers on missions are also a bad idea when they keep forcing that crap on you, since there really isn't any actual danger you can imagine considering it's the LEAD CHARACTER it's all happening to - and might as well be the entire episode running out of time to wrap things up properly. It happens very often in season one. Iit also displays a major setback for a show that truly shines when it uses its strengths with everybody behind the scenes being concentrated on really making it work, putting aside the elements of the show that get overstretched and get cheaper by the episode, more focus and investment from everyone involved... Great pacing that is aligned with storytelling, polished to set aside all the cacophony of explanations, "terms for this and that" about how something works and so forth... I keep repeating it since I wonder if anyone who also loves Alias pays attention at all to anything being said regarding mission description. I can't even explain missions myself and I'm a longtime fan.
What ever happened in Badenweiler? Syd had to disarm a bomb, but Dixon had another way of ravishing the entire building by doing the ka-boom. Okay. CIA operatives died. Okay. And Sydney was --- ? Retrieving inhalers? For what? The doppelganger guy was necessary to Sloane and only wanted to talk to Sloane because being in hiding all these years, knowing the laws and what he wants in exchange, he didn't have proper contacts and couldn't have found out what SD-6 and Arvin Sloane are actually about? I don't even want to get started with how ridiculous Sydney's lying is in season one. Jack's as well. Sloane knew, but for how long?. Also, Sydney and Vaughn having most of their discussions when he was her handler took place at a secluded location, something like a dim storage facility whereas other conversations are all over LA and even Syd mentioned on a couple occasions that SD-6 has people that are specifically tasked to track their operatives’ movements and interactions when they’re out in the open and report any suspicious activity. Michael Vaughn, a CIA agent being seen, all casual and friendly with an SD-6 agent throughout season one - not careless at all?!? I love it how the inconsistent (meaning: bad) writing really exposed itself with Sydney being stunned in season four at the “revelation” that Jack talked openly about his work for the CIA to and in front of Irina/Laura when it was made clear in various scenes in season one that all of that was known and even addressed for what it actually was! Balance is a huge problem for Alias.
Lots of respect for trying and proving that it can quite often be pulled off, but this is seriously a tv show that gets lost in its own world in a really bad way and it's not always enjoyable to watch and be a big fan of (I should know!). Unique and endearing, but quite irritating as well. With a myriad of useless moments, they really sunk too low without a chance to resurface and accomplish anything exceptionally worthy in the end. Clumsy investment in both plot and characters, intertwining arcs, far-fetched concepts, missed opportunities ended up selling a very, very fine show too short. It ends up flirting with ridiculousness too frequently for its own good and it has always deserved better.

Virtual Assistance Career
Thursday, March 14th, 2024
I used to have low self esteem as I was bullied when I was in Grade 2. But this has changed ever since I began my career as a virtual assistant.
I started from scratch. With only my vast educational history and my previous employment as the assistant manager of our family owned business, I was very lucky enough that clients hired me on Elance. That was in January 2008. Only after a month of job searching, I got hired by a client based in New Zealand for a data entry project. I believe after two months, I got hired as a Support Coordinator for an IT Consulting Company based in Cranberra, Australia and as a Marketing and Distribution Representative by documentary film directors based in Sydney, Australia. I believe my clients who hired me when I was just a newbie in the freelancing world saw the potential in me and believed that I will be a valuable asset to their companies.
In January 2013, I applied for virtual assistance certification with a virtual assistance certification company based in Surrey, Vancouver, B.C. CANADA (VAcertified) and my application was approved in August 2013. I was granted the title VAcertified. I have been working as a virtual assistant for 16 1/2 years.
To those who want to be a part of the virtual assistance world, may I suggest that you take up a virtual assistance course and decide which niche you would like to specialize in.
I specialize in Administrative Support and Customer Service, however, I can also do Data Entry (this is my forte), Lead Generation, Market Research, Real Estate Virtual Assistance, Content and Creative Writing, and Social Media Advertising. I’m a “Jill of All Trades”. What more can you ask for? I plan to study Amazon Product Researcher, Bookkeeping, and Accounting. I have a never ending love for learning!
If you’re interested in hiring me, send me an email at [email protected] and I will respond within one business day.
Thank you in advance for your interest in hiring me and have an amazing afternoon!

Multi-instrumentalist, moving around too much didn’t give her the chance to really make friends and instead she relied of music which gave her the change to become a talented musician, by the time she was eighteen she had already signed a recording deal and touring.
Going through a hard time, throughout her adulthood she had one long time partner, although she knew they weren’t good for each other she held onto them until their bond was broken beyond repair, now as an adult, and as a retired musician she is hoping to find new friends and make new music.
Present: After spending most of her adult years touring with her band and meeting some not very astonishing fame, they decided to split. Rogue began composing and writing songs for other artists, which has become her financial support, it's not bad but it's not what she loves. Recently she ended things with her long time partner, it was mutual, but that doesn't mean it wasn't hard for her. She decided to move to Anchorage to get away from everything, to find some inspiration and hoping she can make her own music again.

Hey! My name is Kate Beemer, (she/her/hers) I go to Rutgers University-New Brunswick, and I grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey. I am so grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to get started as an intern at Girlie Action!
What do you hope to gain from this experience?
I am a Journalism and Media Studies major, with a double minor in German, and Gender & Media. I am an active member at WRSU, the official radio station at Rutgers, and a writer for the Daily Targum, the official student-run newspaper at the University. Through my involvement at the Targum and WRSU, I am lucky to have gained many opportunities to practice journalistic writing, press coverage, artist interviews, and more. I am passionate about music, media production, and learning more about the world of PR and Media, especially in the realm of the music industry. I am still very new to this field though, and I have a lot to learn. Through this experience, I hope to continue to explore my passion in these areas and continue learning about PR, promotions, media production, etc. I’m really excited to connect with people that are knowledgeable and experienced in this area, and I am eager to pick up any new skills and knowledge that I can while interning. I am thrilled to be a part of Girlie Action this summer!
What is the best concert you’ve been to?
Hearing live music is probably my favorite thing to do, whether that's at a concert or a house show or even just my younger sister practicing guitar. I feel like I see live music so frequently that this answer changes all the time. But right now, the best concert that comes to mind is when I recently saw the band The Beths play at Union Transfer in Philadelphia, with Sydney Gish as their opener. I got to go with a peer from WRSU, and we were able to get photo passes and photograph both acts from the photo pit during their first two songs. This was an incredibly special experience on its own, as I had never gone to a show with a photo pass. But aside from that, The Beths and Sydney Gish are both extremely talented artists whose music I love. They sounded incredible live and it was an amazing show. It’s awesome to see artists you love in concert when they sound just as good (if not better) in person as they do in their recordings. Again, it is not easy to pick just one concert because I’ve seen so many talented people perform- but the Beths and Sydney Gish are definitely some of my favorite artists that I’ve seen live so far.
What else do you love besides music?
I love to read and write, and I’m really enjoying practicing writing in different forms and styles as a journalism student vs in my own independent writing. I love to travel and learn about new cultures and history. I minor in German and plan to study in Berlin for my junior year at Rutgers. Learning new languages is a major challenge but I do enjoy trying. I love meeting new people and seeking out new experiences. I love to spend time with my family and friends, especially my two younger sisters. I also love clothes and going thrifting. I enjoy water coloring and drawing for fun although I am not good at either. I love spending time outside, swimming, hiking, walking my dog etc.
What’s your dream job?
I’m not sure what exactly my dream job is, but I hope it will be something that allows me to travel, and be creative. I could definitely see myself working in journalism or the media world in some way, especially internationally. I would hope that I could continue my work with broadcast media production, as that is something I have found that I really love. If I had to say a specific job right now, I would say that my dream job is to be an international reporter / radio host. I am inspired by people who have created their own investigative podcasts, or who work in music media production/broadcasting, etc. I’m hoping to find a more clear answer to this through more professional experiences, for example interning here at Girlie Action!

CREATIVE CULTURES & CONTEXTS 237230 ⋆  WEEK 3 ⋆ Isms and Ists Et. al
This week’s class centered on the cultural movements in the world of art and design that have dipped in and out over the past century, with the first activity being, as a group, to develop an understanding of these ‘isms’ as quickly as possible.
Each of the colleagues at my table were to choose something out of the following list:
Indigenous &/or Maori Renaissance/Māori Modernism
Modernism and Modernity
Post Modernism and Postmodernity
Post Structuralism
Post Humanism
Post Feminism
Post Colonialism
I chose Poststructuralism, as I essentially knew nothing about it - making it the perfect topic for the following exercise.
We were given 20 minutes to learn and note as much as we possibly could on our chosen topic, with no regard as to sources, validity, or citations. This would be a surface level understanding gained from surface level research.
I wrote the following based on what I could find in that time.
A further development and contention to structuralism, being the system of cultural patterns/repetitions, poststructuralism disassembles defined order and understanding and opposes a static visual interpretation, which connects it to semiotics. It is also closely tied into postmodernism, itself allowing unwritten voices to define a text.
Poststructuralism is mainly applied to literary theory/textual analysis and involves the reading process where the text is decentralized from its author, placing the power of inquiry with the reader. Perception is everything and intent is futile.
The centerpiece of the following image exemplifies this subjectivity, presenting a fancy cake to some, and as phallic imagery to another.
Tumblr media
Vivi Bach. ORF, n.d.
Linearity in a source is rejected. The purpose of the text is entirely malleable, subject to interpretation and redefinition by each individual reader.
To achieve this understanding, I typed in “poststructuralism” on google images and let the search engine take it from there, spending the rest of the 20 minutes scrolling, reading, and saving what I found.
These were definitions we shaped from the accessible and low hanging, and in the next logical step, our class then used an Artificial Intelligence to generate a definition of our chosen topic. Chat GPT, a generalized, text-based engine, was utilized; and all I had to do was type a question to see a detailed answer materialize in front of me. My query: “Define post-structuralism, with related sources.” This is what the AI responded with:
Tumblr media
Chat GPT features wide list of complex capabilities, its comprehension accelerating to the point where Massey University itself has put systems in place to prevent students from handing in AI-generated texts. From the results seen when asked to provide a cited definition on poststructuralism, it is deadly effective, and somewhat demoralizing. There is no denying the convenience that the introduction of such systems into the public sphere propose, but with these massive leaps in technology come an accompanying ethical unease.
Following this exercise, we continued our class by watching a student panel -filmed just a week before - from Sydney University on the ramifications of the use of ChatGPT in their studies. In the recording, there were four points raised that caught my interest.
One student brought up the very important benefit of efficiency, especially regarding the process of finding sources for one’s writing. Chat GPT makes the searching process much easier as it can quickly curate related sources at a whim, saving time from what would otherwise be a prolonged aspect of the study process. The time saved from this can then be used elsewhere - “…we can really use that time in our actual thinking and our actual learning...” (15:39-16:29)
For those close to graduation, there are rising fears that the services offered by ChatGPT may keep them out of entry level jobs, especially in the fields of software engineering and coding. As well as these fears of job divides, the same student also mentions how, in recognizing the costs that go behind running the ChatGPT software. The fears are that “…some people will have access to it and other might miss out, and it’s an advantage…” (18:08-19:04)
In what could be considered a summary of the whole ordeal, another student put it bluntly - “…it’s not going away, you can’t take it down, it’s not going to stop being a part of our lives…”. ChatGPT, with all its bells, whistles, and revolutionary features, is just going to have to be something we’ll have to deal with from here on out. (22:05-22:18)
Massey themselves are not banning ChatGPT but acknowledge this is new and rapidly developing technology and that it should follow citation rules. Quite simply, if you source anything from ChatGPT - or any AI for that matter - then you’d better make it clear.
As a conclusive exercise, the following is an evaluation of four different types of online sources, and their respective validity.
Tumblr media
The next phase of this week’s studies saw us ‘curating’ a little something of our own; being a museum ‘catalogue’ featuring a selection of art that exemplifies our chosen topic, along with being an opportunity to flex one’s design muscle. I chose four varied artistic examples for this work, being Gary Larson’s infamous “Cow tools”, an AI generated photo from 2019, a commercial pin art-wall, and as a local example, the antique rock art found at Maerewhenua. All these examples share the commonality of a removal from constructed meaning, leaving discussions to be made solely with the viewers – intentional or not.
Tumblr media
RESPONSE
Like it or not, the newest era of digital technology has brought with it a redefinition of how we source our information from here onwards. With notions of vast swathes of knowledge available at one’s fingertips now old news, the next logical step in an ever-upward motion of the resources at our disposal sees them curate the information for us with no independent intention other than to provide what we ask for, immediately. This goes beyond the functions of search engines, these resources now collect themselves, write, conclude, and cite themselves – it is a level of convenience so suddenly apparent that it warrants restrictions in academic situations. ChatGPT, now in its fourth iteration, promises to deliver on more functionality than ever before, in a continuously accelerating growth that has contributed to a common – and justified – sour taste in the mouths of those here to witness it.
In what can only be considered plain irony, a machine designed to efficiently solve queries has generated more questions than answers. In the academic sphere – with Massey University being an anecdotal example of this – measures have been put in place to both detect and single out unwarranted usage of generative AI services as a means of cheating. Further ethical consequences are looming over the job market, with numerous office roles at imminent risk of total replacement. Indeed, we are facing the reality that modern world’s tight reliance on structure amid all its facets is a defined, predictable for society that a computer can – and will – fully grasp.
Given its philosophical opposition against the calculated and solid, I wondered as to the present-day applications of the likes of Poststructuralism, a system developed decades before the household adoption of computer technology. By inception (avoiding the term ‘design’) however, Poststructuralism does not adhere to a specific time-period, and easily covers phenomena of past, present and future. What once could describe a natural world only interpreted and made sense of by us, now describes what may very well be a counter-thought to the structure of the urban and digital.
As a philosophy, poststructuralism reads very similar to postmodernism, with both relishing in the uncertainty of what we see, and with the observation of everything but the canvas. In art, we see these ideas appear in the depiction of the unseen, the implied centerpiece, a natural process of the audience finding meaning in the meaningless. The short period of research, skimmed from the very surface of the internet’s archives on the subject, has brought me these skeletal understandings of something complex enough to warrant 60 years of continuous philosophical discussion. The motions of relation between these glances at poststructuralism and the surrounding discourse on sources have been cyclical, and the resulting conclusions – inconsequential. It can be easy to see the postmodern and poststructural alike as frivolous, merely existing to counter what is with what is not. But it is along these lines that the respective value shines through – especially in artistic context – with allowing one to look beyond what is set in stone, and layer critique in a manner that may redefine, recontextualize and further appreciation of the visual world through the un-visual.
REFLECTION
Tumblr media
Putting aside my somewhat sensationalized depiction of my experience with this week’s subjects, looking into Poststructuralism was a rewarding venture. While there has always been a general expectation to leave room for interpretation in one’s work, especially with my studies so far at Massey University, to have a specific philosophy to explain and unravel these actions is quite helpful.
That aside, I also enjoyed being able to design a catalogue, especially with the whole aspect of formatting and finding images – it’s quite therapeutic. The discussions on ChatGPT that were brought up did leave me a little shaken however; times are uncertain for many professions – including mine – and there is little we can do except go with the flow.
