Alright, alright, and now for the aftershow.....

Episode Digest:

Lots of things I expected this episode. Lots of things I didn’t.

Caleb and Essek turning time to get everyone a long rest - I wonder if that was a quick narrative twist on Matt’s part, because they only let Fjord (who arguably needs long rests the least) went into the Rejuvinator when they found it? Perhaps he thought they’d utilize it more, but when they didn’t, he decided to have Essek keep a crystal and find means of using it later? Without it, they’d have been going into that fight tapped.

Regardless of what went on behind the screen, that was awesome. Essek chose the best moment to roll a d20. I can’t wait to find out what horrible ways that could have gone wrong if both of them biffed it. Now, the wizards are bound in the holy matrimony of Messing With The Timeline, and I, for one, think that’s beautiful. (Is it an official spell? Is it something that Matt released? Or is it a one-off? I can see it being a 9th level spell.)

As for Lucien.

Lucien, Lucien, Lucien... his absolute descent into madness, his evil monologue - the DRAMA. The most frustrating thing is... I can see hints of Molly. It’s the same goddamn blueprint. It’s the same incredible gall, the character, the urge, the confidence... and yet it’s inverted, a mirror you cannot believe in.

What has he done? He wanted to take the place of the Somnovum - but are they not the ones who gave him immunity to psychic damage? Would it not follow that they would also be immune to it? What has he done to the city? Has he actually accomplished anything? And what, if anything, is his ultimate goal? Just to rule?

I keep going back to Molly’s story, the one he told Beau, not too shortly before he passed - how he convinced a whole town or city that he was royalty. He’d tricked them all. To make it a better place.

And you know what? I feel like eating our words is a theme this campaign.

This man didn’t just create a small tear in time to help his friends get the rest they needed

Oh no no no.

This man broke reality in a contained radius to help the Mighty Nein, specifically with the help of Caleb

Now I’m not saying there’s Shadowgast content to be seen... but i HIGHLY doubt Essek is just trying to regain their trust.

Why?

Because there’s only one other NPC i can think of who’d break every ounce of logic and moral and forgo any potential risks for those they cared for.
