Cajun food isn't the same without crawfish! Thanks to donations, The Barn Group Land Trust now owns 2 operating crawfish farms in Lousiana. Referred to as mudbugs, crawfish farming adds an estimated $300 million yearly to Louisiana's economy. Crawfish farms also provide habitat for hundreds of species of birds that migrate from as far north Canada. This is a Georgia Red-backed Salamander—Plethodon serratus. It had to be red in Georgia, right? The Barn Group found it under an old woodpile in Brooks, Georgia. Georgia has had lots of rain and the Red-backed Salamander likes moisture. They can be found beneath logs and in leaf litter, especially in winter. Another property to protect biodiversity in North Georgia, The Barn Group hopes to conserve this year! A rocky headwater stream with a mature hardwood forested buffer runs through it. Headwater streams are critical to biodiversity. The Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) states the maintenance of forested buffers to reduce light infiltration, sedimentation, and nutrient loading is necessary to maximize compatibility of working lands and biodiversity. While out hiking, I saw these pottery shards from the First People of the area. They lived long ago. They used and loved the land. Luckily this spot of their land has not been developed. We don’t know what the future brings but it will likely include more people needing more space. The Barn at Rock Fence Ice Addiction fishing events have opened our eyes to the needs of veterans. We have been blessed to partner with American Military Families. On Saturday we saw how they responded with deep concern and immediate action to a veteran in need 5 hours from the tournament. They received a call and they went swiftly despite the distance and inconvenience. Watching them in action made us want to help them and veterans even more.
