Yugioh OC Week Day 3: Deck - Part 1

This is a continuation from Renee’s introduction

"I'll take you on!" Luke pointed an accusing finger at Renee.

"No, I can handle it!" Romin chimed in, stepping in front of him.

"I volunteered first!" Luke pushed back, sending both of them into an argument.

"I literally don't care," Renee said, unamused at their bickering, "How about you, purple boy?" She looked at Gakuto.

"I'll take you on," He agreed to which a wide smile spread across the girl's face.

"You don't want to duel me?" Yuga pointed at himself.

"I'm sure Neil would rather have you duel him so I'll leave you alone." Renee hooked her duel disk and so did Gakuto.

"Rush Duel!" Romin and Luke settled down upon hearing the two start and focused their attention on the duel.

"I'll start this off by summoning Starlit Leo, La Luna, and Sirius the Stellar Wolf," Renee began, "Then, I send La Luna to the Graveyard to Tribute Summon Nova Knight! I set a card and end my turn."

"I draw!" Gakuto started, "I summon Crying Moon Rabbit, Ancient Turtle Protector, and Masaki the Legendary Samurai. Now, I tribute Crying Moon Rabbit and Ancient Turtle Protector! Come forth, Kimeruler the Dark Raider!"

"Very impressive," Renee mused.

"It will be once Kimeruler attacks. I set a card and then Kimeruler will take out your Nova Knight!"

Renee: 3300

"And then Masaki attacks Starlit Leo!" Renee winced as her monster got destroyed.

Renee: 2800

"I end my turn."

"My turn then," Renee drew her cards, "First, I'll summon Starlight Spirit and Pyxis, Heaven's Compass. Pyxis' effect activates when I have three Light monsters on my field. I draw one card." She presented the card to Gakuto: the spell Constellation Barrage.

"Since I drew a spell card, I'm allowed to draw another card." Looking at her new card, a slight smile crossed her face and something lit up in her eyes. "Okay, I send Pyxis and Starlight Spirit to the Graveyard for a Tribute Summon! Weave and dance under the night sky and cast a truly illuminating spell! Starmight Sorciere!" The four kids stared up at her ace monster, a slender sorceress dressed in robes that resembled the night sky. Her white hair emitted a faint glow from under a large witch's hat and she waved a silver scepter through the air in one hand.

"Then, I also summon Astronomer's Apprentice. Next, I use the spell card Constellation Barrage. All Light monsters on my field gain 300 ATK and you take 300 damage for each Light monster on my field as well."

Gakuto: 3100

"I set a card facedown and then activate Starmight Sorciere's effect. I send the Level 5 Nova Knight in my hand to the Graveyard and then Starmight Sorciere gains 200 ATK times that monster's level. Plus, your Kimeruler will lose the same amount of ATK. Stellar Surge!" A shining aura enveloped the two monsters, boosting Renee's and draining Gakuto's.

"With 3300 ATK, Starmight Sorciere attacks Kimeruler! Dancing Constellation!" A matrix of stars shot from the sorceress' staff, entangling Gakuto's monster.

"I use a trap!" The boy countered, "Lucky Mask of Omens gives Kimeruler ATK equal to 100 times his level."

Gakuto: 2100

"Sirius the Stellar Wolf goes after Masaki the Legendary Samurai but they both have 1500 ATK so they're both destroyed."

"Why would you do that?" Gakuto asked after the simultaneous destruction.

"To do this," Renee replied, "Astronomer's Apprentice attacks directly!"

Gakuto: 1300

"I end my turn," Renee grumbled.

"Disappointed?" Gakuto noticed, "I draw! I summon two Nandes the Fire Awakeners. Then, I tribute both of them! Yamiruler the Dark Delayer!" The commanding warrior stood tall over the battlefield.

"I use Yamiruler's effect and change him to defense position so that you can't tribute summon any Level 7 or higher monsters next turn."

"That's quite the effect," Renee responded but didn't appear too phased by the situation.

"Then, since I have Yamiruler on my field, I can Special Summon this monster from my hand. Yamiluna the Dark Supporter!" Renee did pause at the appearance of another Level 8 monster.

"Yamiluna's effect changes Yamiruler back to attack position and he gains 500 ATK. I set a card and then Yamiruler attacks Starmight Sorciere!"

"I use a trap," Renee reacted, "Starmight Unite gives my monsters 500 ATK for each monster on your field." Yamiruler's attack was deflected by Starmight Sorciere's staff before she shot a beam of light at him.

Gakuto: 1000

"Yamiluna can still attack Astronomer's Apprentice though."

Renee: 2100

"I end my turn." Renee saw him grit his teeth as she began her turn. This would be over soon.

"I'll start by activating the spell Five-Point Beam. I send a Light monster in my hand to the Graveyard to destroy your set card." A star-shaped beam pierced the facedown.

"Then, I use Starmight Sorciere's effect again by sending Level 8 Starmight Asteroid Queen to the Graveyard. Stellar Surge! My monster will gain 1600 ATK while Yamiluna loses 1600 ATK." Renee met Gakuto's eyes, both of them with the realization that it was over. "Starmight Sorciere, attack Yamiluna the Dark Supporter!" A bright light filled the tunnel.

Gakuto: 0

"You did good, I will admit." Renee stood victorious as a penalty was inflicted on Yuga and his friends. "We should do it again sometime." Just as quickly as she had emerged before them, she skipped off, leaving the four alone in the Garden of Providence.

Brave Command Dagwon and how it reignited my interest in Super Robots.

I have a bit of a confession. I was a bit of a Super Robot fan before being a Gundam fan. The shows I was exposed with back in the day were things like Daimos, the original Aquarion, and RahXephon. Let's just say 2010-2012 me was once into anime, largely due to having cable back in the day, and one of the channels we had was Hero TV.

Fast forward to the present day, and these days I'm more of a Tokusatsu fan than an Anime fan, other than Gundam at least. What kicked my fascination with the Brave series was the release of the RG GaoGaiGar, and said release led me into a rabbit hole of Brave content.

And then, out of sheer boredom, I decided to watch one of the various entries of the Brave series, that being The Brave Command Dagwon, and I ended up liking it.

The first thing that caught my eye when watching this was how much it felt like a Super Sentai series (hence why I think of this as a Sentai-like show, much like with the Chouseishin & Tomica Hero series). Not only that, much like it's successor, GaoGaiGar, the humans become giant robots.

The Dagwon cast were someone I ended up growing to love, even the supporting cast such Maria, Gaku, and Luna. The mechs in the series were awesome, my personal favorite would end up being Super Fire Dagwon. And that final arc was *chef's kiss*.

I would wholeheartedly recommend for those who are fans of Sentai, as well as those getting into the Brave series.

with grief and desperation pressing down on her, clarke allows hope to bleed into the quiet timbre of her voice. she watches the hesitation shift across luna's visage with bated breath, hands held clenched at her sides ( ears peeled for any hint of guards on alert ) ― when the delinquent's expression softens to resolve, the relief that washes over her is so thick she could cry. ( there's a lot of that running around today, unfortunately. )

swallowing the anxiety lodged in her throat, the blonde fishes for a tremulous smile and takes the girl's hands, pressing a walkie into them. “ it's already tuned to mine. i . . . i need you to keep me informed of what's happening here. what our people choose. ” there's an apologetic crook of her lips, gaze faltering briefly. the others she trusts are already on pike's radar, she can't risk them any further. A lot has happened since my last post!

Firstly, the second game of the Calthradia Crusade has concluded! This time the mission was much more narratively skewed and, uh, much more unbalanced. I’ll have a battle report up on my YouTube someday™.

The third game will be my Thunderbearers(!!!) defending against an incoming Ork horde. I’m excited to see how that goes, and I’m more excited to finally put some Marines in the Crusade.

Secondly, I finished assembling the ten man Intercessor squad for my Order of Battle, which I’ve named Strike Force Starglaive. With the assembly of Squad Arctos, the army is pretty damn close to being fully assembled. Once I finish making a cool Primaris Lieutenant for our HQ choice, Starglaive will finally be finished.

These dudes are the backbone of the Crusade, so I wanted to keep them pretty uniform & standard. That being said, there’s just enough model variety for each Astartes to look like an individual with their own personal accolades and experiences.

And speaking of variety…

As I fall deeper into the kitbashing rabbit hole, I inevitably spend more money on shit that I don’t need to spend money on. So, when I saw the Chaos Space Marine kit, some of the bolter designs really caught my eye. The belt feed shit has always been what the Thunderbearers are all about. So, like a total genius, I bought a whole fuckin’ CSM kit just so I could axe two guns from it.

Was it worth the money? Absolutely not. Do the models look sick? Oh hell yeah they do.

Here’s Sergeant Arctos, himself. He’s pretty simple looking, especially compared to Sergeant Cambarn and especially Sergeant Taranis, but that’s on purpose. Arctos is a fledgling Sergeant with minimal experience, much like many of the other Primaris Astartes being sent to Calthradia. While he’s a gifted and disciplined soldier, Arctos is still struggling to find his voice of command despite his talents, whether due to his lack of experience or his mild nature. As such, his promotion to the rank of Sergeant for the Crusade is more a test of him than his men. Will the campaign fan the flames of greatness within Sergeant Arctos, or will it be snuffed by the pressure of the war?

And on the topic of both war and Chaos Space Marines, let me introduce you to the Luna Reavers.

I had a lot of Chaos Marine bits lying around. Well, not really bits, it was more of, uh, an entire unbuilt kit, so I decided to put them together for fun. The Luna Reavers are an enigmatic Chaos Undivided Warband that plague Calthradia I. They really like plasma weaponry and they don’t talk a whole lot.

I’m particularly proud of the weathering. This was my first time ever attempting paint chipping and scratching, and I think it came out really good. He looks grimy and old and Chaos-y, and he’s maybe one of my favorite models.

But the Luna Reavers aren’t the only Chaos goons coming to Calthradia!

Accompanying them is a lot of very miscolored Bloodletters. My friend says they’re wearing stockings due to the leg coloration, and to that I say: if he wants to serve, let him serve.

This certainly isn’t my best model, but it isn’t anywhere near my worst, either. It’s solid. I dry brushed the gross back pimples black so as to make them pop (no pun intended) and I slathered him in Nuln Oil because, frankly, that’s the only way I know how to make my models look nice. But hey, it kinda worked, and now our Luna Reaver has a gay little Chaos buddy.

Other than all this, I’m chipping away at painting the remainder of my army. Next post will probably be Squad Taranis in its finished state. Stay tuned for Astartes shenanigans.

floukru ;; notable mentions

there are anywhere from 50 to 75 members of floukru at any given time, so i thought i would make a post to list some that luna may reference in threads with others.

notable members acknowledged on this blog are as follows. [ like bring me floukru people and you have our hearts ]

luna. - formerly trikru, leader of the boat people. luna fled her conclave at the age of thirteen and upon her arrival at the rig, was looked up to first as a natblida and then for her beliefs, caring for children as a child herself, caring for her people.

cap. - formerly delphikru. cap is floukru highest ranked scout. he is the eldest of those luna calls ‘the brothers’ (cap, thatcher, lincoln) cap handles all shoreline signal fires and containment upon arrival at the rig.

thatcher. - formerly delphi, thatcher was cast out for being mute, hearing impaired, following a blast by the mountain men that destroyed his home. he is luna’s personal scout. sign language was taught by thatcher from the moment he arrived and met luna, formed between the two, and then luna taught it to the children on his behalf from there on. he is the closest to luna at all times and in ways is her body guard and big brother. thatcher is luna’s most tenderly close friend and confidant, protector.

lincoln. - formerly trikru. nuff said. lincoln’s home is the rig, more than it is anywhere else.

adria. - formerly louwoda kliron. adria is luna’s second for intents and purposes, raised as her daughter to lead floukru in the event that luna should pass.

koda. - formerly azgeda. two years of age or older verse depending.

river. - formerly ingranronakru. infirmary. the head floukru healer.

shay. - formerly louwoda kliron and like a sister to luna, shay teaches lessons with the children when luna is not and is known as a floukru seda alongside luna.

derrick. - formerly trikru. mostly works fishing and netting and i don’t really talk much about him here bc he just doesn’t vibe well with me, with how he comes off around luna sooo…if you know me you know a fair bit about how i feel about derrick. [ i’ll keep that abusive mess in other past posts where it belongs. feel free to just ask. ]

arthur. - rig-born. luna’s ambassador in polis. given that it is the floukru ambassador who first stands to call for a coup, luna had heard plenty to be unhappy with lexa as commander and challenged her from afar. with hearing about the azgeda ambassador being kicked from the tower just prior, luna gave orders to her ambassador to voice her displeasure with lexa. arthur is great basically and is the grandfather within the clan, don’t fuck with arthur he will tattle to luna and you’ll end up with a coup de grâce. just hug him and braid shells into his beard.

animals on the rig. floukru harbors dozens of chickens as a second source of protein to the sea life pulled in with nets. three dozen are laying hens, and two dozen are there to hatch chicks. their numbers are closely monitored to keep a balance between meat and eggs. aside from the chickens all other animals found on the rig are companions and there are not many. a rabbit calls the rig home and goes where it likes.

Nox. - dire hybrid. as a pup nox was found and cared for by lincoln, but upon lincoln aiding luna in fleeing to floukru at the age of thirteen, the female wolf pup was left in luna’s care as a comfort as she adjusted to her new home. nox has grown at luna’s side and though mellow in demeanor, is known to snap at those who invade luna’s space, should luna feel threatened or uneasy. nox submits to luna when the command is given for her to lay down at luna’s side, but if luna does not give this command and is made to feel uncomfortable nox will defend her. derrick is the only person among floukru to have been scarred by the wolf’s bite.

HoloServer Quarterly Report

Usada Constructions - Buy

To understand the current position of UsaKen, we must look to its history. At first, UsaKen was a joke, a riff on Majima Constructions, a potemkin company only existing to serve the whims of the founder and CEO. Pekora’s project was sophisticated and massive, her pranks simply legendary. But out of the blue, Moona enters. The mutual awkwardness worked in their favor, in fact this will be a prevailing theme, what might seem like a highly dysfunctional group, actually turns the whole thing into strength.

The Rabbit and Moon theme didn’t hurt them either, and the idea of Usada Construction as an actual entity enters the public consciousness, especially as a point of comparison to the fledgling Akukin Constructions… although it could be said that Akukin was the remnant of Hololive Resistance in some sense. This led to the initial expansion with the hiring of Coco and Kiara… but again this was more of a joke, a fleeting thought before UsaKen was about to come on its own.

It was the Akukin Relay that really set the ball rolling. Not only did we have the fortuitous event of Kanata accepting a position in UsaKen before finding out she did get a callback from Akukin, it spurred Pekora into focusing on Minecraft, especially her gaming plans were dirtied by corporate pressure. Pekora started small, with her misbehaving cannon and putting out her petty anger onto Noel, but soon Pekora unveiled her grand plan, Pekoland, and immediately set out to organize the company as a whole.

By now, the company was fairly-sized. It added Botan and eventually Towa into the mix, although Botan is still technically an affiliate and Towa first came with revenge, before using the company as an opportunity to learn how to be evil. Now the company measured seven strong, although they were quite disparate, having members from all three branches and across three generations. This was quickly noticed and a discord server was made in response, which led to another group project immediately after Pekoland, which was already a pretty big project. Combined with Coco’s final innovation, the Summer Festival became an even bigger project in the end.

And it would be odd to think this would end soon. There’s an actual structure to things now, people can communicate and build on ideas and the whole thing seems pretty democratic, even with its autocratic start. And Summer Festival brought UsaKen into the center of Hololive narrative. UsaKen is now the de facto face of HoloServer, and perhaps even Hololive itself. People look at the former loner as the master organizer. Things only look up from here, which is worrisome, but there’s enough in UsaKen that I’m less worried than usual. UsaKen will always come out stronger in the end.

Akukin Constructions - Buy

Meanwhile, Akukin completely collapsed. It felt like Aqua would return from her Apex marathon, but it turns out prior and prep for the solo concert meant a month break is what she needed, therefore Akukin was without a leader for one more month.

Lamy and Nene managed with their own projects, but the rest kind of fell apart. But the Summer Festival changed all that. Just as Akukin Relay signalled Pekora a restructuring was needed, Summer Festival meant Akukin had to show up. So, the skit continued. During the Akukin Relay arc, the mysterious yet feisty boss with two second-in-command who actually runs the thing scheming and fretting was a hit, with a hint of blackness in its blasted scaffoldings. Now, the blackness is very much apparent. Aqua cannot let the failing company go, and has become vicious. Considering Marine's past, this works to their favor. Lamy and Nene would be their own thing. Roboco and Mel would pop in now and again. As for Iofi and Aki… well, I’m not sure.

Choco, which I deemed the liaison for Shiranui, which has a contractual relationship with Akukin, now liaisons for Oozora Group as well. Choco might be the next important person just because of that connection factor. Akukin might be a contracting company now, although Aqua would not be happy about where they stand now.

Oozora Group - Hold

I know that Oozora Constructions, now Oozora Group, is not a publicly traded company anymore, but I still suggest holding onto that now-worthless piece of paper. The problem with Oozora Constructions was that its story went nowhere. Korone’s house was interesting, but it rarely had an ending, since it required Korone to cooperate and that’s usually an awkward thing at best. Her other projects were half-baked, and most importantly Subaru never really had that recognition. She wanted to build a company but others laughed at the prospect. So Rushia lost faith and moved to UsaKen. Oozora was tanking before it started to fly. But Matsuri took grace and joined Oozora, at which point it became a group. It’s not like Matsuri and Luna, the other employee, haven’t been together, and Subaru was called Matsuri by Sora, so why not?

In the last report, I said Matsuri is more like a government employee than a free agent, and indeed it seems Oozora Group now acts like a governmental organization, with building a police station being the first undertaking after restructuring. This is actually not bad. Public utilities are dearly needed in HoloServer anyways, and Subaru acting as a public servant removes the desperation in her actions that would make interactions much more friendly and interesting. By falling, Subaru might have turned a corner.

Tangent - Using an extended analogy, when the age of giant reptiles was wiped out by a meteorite, there were small survivors, which we now know as birds. So, it looks like Coco’s legacy would also be held by birds, holotoris to be exact. To explain why, let’s look at the current functional part of Coco. Coco is the bridge that connects East to the West, not just in terms of language, but also in culture and mores. In that way, holotoris nicely distributes this responsibility. Subaru might be the best JP member after Haachama in terms of English comprehension, and she is quite cognizant of recent foreign perspectives as well… so she could be a good future ambassador. For Reine, her Indonesian teaching stream reminds me of Coco’s early streams. And Kiara’s Holotalk has been the counterweight to Coco’s meme review since it started… Not to mention, these three are the most extroverted of their respective branches.

Shiranui-Elite Conglomerate - Hold

SEC is an organization of my own creation, but it’s a useful one, because it fits the current situation well. To sum up, Elite Construction was starting to fall apart as Minecraft activities waned, one of the replacements was GTA V, and the three major players were Miko, Flare and Suisei. Their collab together was probably the highlight of the last quarter and gave us a bright spot during a time of troubles.

As Minecraft activities increased, due to PekoLand and HoloID mall and Mel and Roboco popping in and out, the connection before was starting to bore out in Minecraft. Shiranui was originally a contracting company, working with Akukin for example. Therefore it had a family business type, indeed the only other employee was an honorary one given to Flare’s wife, Noel. But a series of interactions with Polka and Choco led to this master and apprentice relationship, which was a major hit.

Flare, pardon the pun, was always the black sheep of the Hololive Fantasy. While the other four have something to stand out and something to back the flash (Pekora draws with her laughter and manic behavior which is backed up by her earnest shyness, Rushia draws from her yandere metal screams which backed up by her sincerity and fragility, Noel draws with her upper assets and ASMR which is backed up by her erogaki silliness and her charming singing, and Marine draws from her horny nature which is backed up by her wit and almost motherly wiseness), Flare never really landed a character. Indeed, Flare is a straight man through and through. Not quite a tsukkomi like Subaru or Kanata at times, since there is not that retorting arrogance the two can exhibit, as people call, Flare was your comfy older sister...

But the Western audience and this Polka relationship changed that. In the West, the fatherly figure has more of a distinct and prominent role, and Flare can emulate this pretty well. A dad is grounded and serious, but can be silly and childish at times. But the silly and childishness does not undercut his serious nature… and that goes well with Flare (perhaps even more so than Calli, who is on a goofier side of things). Therefore Flare could finally breathe and express herself. And the introduction of Miko and Suisei brings the crew into full focus. They are reminiscent of early UsaKen, except while UsaKen was disparate, SEC most closely resembles… well, a D&D party. With your typical silly arguments and trials leading to growth and so on.

Adding Marine or even Nene might disturb this. Flare is fine with the size and I am too. It’s not like there are any real pickings left anyway. Shiranui-Elite conglomeration have a long journey ahead of them, but a brighter future that goes along with it too.

Haachama Construction - Sell (but buy Watasheep)

It was inevitable. Haachama/Haato thing was not going to be settled soon. Haato barely finished the Coexist arc, getting the Anno disease in the process. It was pretty clear that the Haato/Haachama thing became overblown and unfitting to what Hololive was now.

But this leaves us with Watame, and Watame is in an interesting position. Watame is between a lot of companies now. With Shiranui-Elite, she is part of the four heavenly lords, and as Watasheep, she does the delivery of Menya Botan and KFP, both part of UsaKen, who inadvertently cornered the fast-food business. And she is part of the 4th Gen, who has come much closer due to the departure of Coco.

Watame has always made the safe choice, she revolutionized the server with her excellent Janken machine, but it was Kanata who became the seller. Watame might choose to leave herself out, since her Minecraft streams are kind of meant to be relaxing. The reason she deliberately chose to level her field, instead of building the sign outwards like the rest of the signs. So, perhaps nothing comes of this…

OkaKoro Constructions & Shirakami Forestry - Buy

This wave of HoloServer was so large that even the rarer visitors felt a need to visit. Flare has reached out to Okayu, who has pointed out the reason for her absence was the loss of her basement and Korone has followed interest in the server as well.

Fubuki returned to finish her massive sakura tree, of course she acts alone, but she has been increasingly open to hiring people, but it’s not sure if this will become reality. Perhaps if Akukin finally dissolves, there would be enough workforce…

Kureiji Constructions - Buy

Ollie had a roller coaster of three months… Like a burnt fuse, Ollie has had several physical problems… that didn’t stop her from doing math streams (there are precedents Yashiro and Gwelu being good examples) and returning recently with late contributions to the Summer Festival. Reine has been helping on the side as well…

Free Agents - Sell

There is not much of this category anymore. Anya is the One who does not play Minecraft, in fact her demeanor is quite different from anyone else. Ayame not only has been gone from Minecraft, she has been gone, period. She really just returned to streaming after about three weeks? Risu is the only one remotely available, but she has the gene of OkaKoro, which does not induce work ethics in Minecraft, no matter how skilled she is. (Her roller coaster MLG is still one of my favorite clips)

Overall, 2021 Q2 was the best of times and the worst of times. There was a lot of big progress and a lot of setbacks as well. It’s a deeply uncomfortable but adventurous position, as it always has been for HoloServer and HoloPro as a whole. Next quarter will be further accomplishments and further challenges, and the company and the personalities and the audience will bear it through it all, as they always have.

Usagi shoved Leonardo down. With his hands bound, Leonardo wasn’t able to catch himself and landed face-first into the rough wood, Usagi and Nuriyuki falling alongside him. The space where their heads had once been was slashed by a flash of metal as a saw blade whizzed past and slammed into a nearby tree, embedding deep into the trunk.

“Stay down.” Usagi whispered quickly to Nuriyuki, who had taken to hiding under the thin sheets that would have otherwise acted as a blanket. “Don’t move.”

Usagi pulled both of his katana free and jumped from the cart and ran swiftly to meet their attackers. From his position, Leonardo couldn’t see who the attackers were, and so he forced himself into an upright position despite Usagi’s warning.

It was hard to see through the night and the fog, and with the figures moving as fast as they were. He couldn’t tell which one was Usagi; not for certain. They all looked the same! They were rabbits, all rabbits. Rabbits with weapons that, though Leonardo could hardly see the detail, recognized. There were many such weapons in his home!

Finally, Leonardo deduced which one of the figures would have been Usagi. The one with dual katana, holding his own as best as he could against what, at Leonardo’s count, was three other rabbits. Weapons flashing. Powerful hind legs kicking out, sharpened claws ripping into flesh and sending fur flying.

Usagi was tossed to the ground but, before the offending rabbit could bring their blade down upon the struggling creature, Usagi’s feet met their stomach and dislodged them. He tried to scramble to his feet, but was pinned once more by a larger rabbit who planted a foot on his head.

Leonardo felt helpless. His arms couldn’t be freed no matter how he fought, only managing to dig the rope deeper into the thick skin. The pain wasn’t very much, but it was enough to make Leonardo stop his struggle and try to think of a different escape. He let himself fall backward so his carapace would take the brunt of the fall, and then followed the command of his slopped shell to slide onto his plastron.

“Hey— hey kid!” Leonardo called in a half whisper.

Nuriyuki poked his muzzle out of the sheet, his nose twitching, eyes watery and spilling tears down his cheeks. “I’m not supposed to talk to you…”

“Hey— that’s okay— that’s okay. You don’t have to talk, just listen.” Leonardo spoke quickly, some of his words seeming to blur together. “You can trust me, okay?”

Nuriyuki didn't respond, laying as flat as his fat little body allowed and bringing his paws up to wipe the tears from his eyes, though the spiraling terror still remained in the dark pools.

“I— I need you to get me my odachi and to untie me.” Leonardo said, “S-so I can help your friend!”

Nuriyuki started to pull deeper into the protection of the sheets.

“Hey— no no no no, listen! The only other thing that happens here is your friend getting torn apart by those baddies. I can help him! You just have to trust me.”

Nuriyuki looked up. His eyes met Leonardo’s and they shared a silent connection. Nuriyuki sucked in several deep, strained breaths before scampering out from his shelter and grabbing a hold of the ropes restraining Leonardo, undoing them with surprising expertise. When Leonardo felt the ropes go slack, he jumped up and grabbed his odachi from Nuriyuki. In the same motion, he threw himself over the wall of the cart and charged to join the battle.

The offending rabbit currently pinning Usagi heard Leonardo coming. Before Leonardo’s sword could touch base, another blade crossed his in a disarming attempt. Leonardo held strong, falling and swiping at the rabbits feet. The rabbit jumped back with just enough time to avoid the attack, and just enough time for Usagi to scramble to his feet and join Leonardo with their backs pressed together so no one could sneak up on them.

“How’d you get free?” Usagi whispered.

“I’m very persuasive.” Leonardo snickered in response.

The attackers seemed hesitant to continue to fight now that the playing field was almost even. They had pulled back, gathered into a small huddle as they eyed Usagi and Leonardo with glowing eyes. Leonardo knew that look. He smiled and stomped his foot, making the rabbits startle and scatter off into the night.

Usagi gave it a few moments before he dropped his blade, and Leonardo followed suit.

“Thank you.” Usagi breathed softly, his ears still erect as if he expected the enemy to return at any time. He turned and gave a bow to Leonardo, which the mutant was quick to return.

“What did those guys want with you?” Leonardo asked, sliding his odachi back into its place on his shell. “Seemed personal.”

“They were just bandits.” Usagi quickly brushed past Leonardo’s question. “Nothing more.”

Usagi moved past Leonardo, eyes dwelling on the mutant for as long as he deemed necessary before jumping into the cart with a powerful bound. Nuriyuki immediately ran to meet Usagi, hugging the rabbit though his pathetically arms couldn’t quite reach fully around. Usagi’s paws went to carefully cup around Nuriyuki’s back and hold him close, though Leonardo wouldn’t count such as a hug.

“Are you alright?” Usagi asked, his paws going from the badger’s back to his shoulders, carefully squeezing him.

“I’m fine Usagi.” Nuriyuki squeaked. “Are you hurt?”

Usagi fluffed out his ruffled fur; it was stained brown with the mud that lay under the frosted snow, but there was no blood that Leonardo could see.

“I am fine as well.”

“Those bandits were really big!” Nuriyuki frowned, his ears lying flat.

Usagi tweaked the badger’s nose before leaning down to pick up the box of berries he had forsaken. He then turned to Leonardo.

“We have to pack up and keep moving. Those bandits will be back with more friends.” He shoved the box of berries into Leonardo’s arms. “You need to keep your strength. And don’t manipulate my ward again.” The rabbit’s eyes and teeth flashed a threatening warning to the turtle.

Leonardo looked down at the assortment of dried fruit, then back up at Usagi with the slightest bow of his head. They started to clean up their camp and were long gone within the hour.

Winter Passing | Chapter 6

Summary: After car accident leaves him at the base of a mountain with no sign of civilization for miles, a breakup is the least of Henry’s problems. Just as death’s icy fingers begin to coil around him, salvation presents itself in the form of an old cabin in a clearing. Despite years of being told fairy tales and ghost stories that warn against such things, he uses his last of his strength to reach the cottage. Tiago had never been the most graceful of birds. A parrot by technicality of his species alone, the fact that he could fly at all was something of an affront to nature. With cartoonish eyes that got comically wide whenever he was indignant (which was often), and a plump, squat body that was too heavy to be aerodynamic in any way, he defied all odds as he tumbled through the wind currents, simply happy to be away from his home and made truly useful yet again.

“But have you heard the story of the rabbit in the moon? Or the cow that hopped the planets while straddling a spoon or she, who leapt up mountains, while whistling up a tune and swapped her songs with swallows while riding on a broom?” He sang to himself as he played in the trade winds, looping and curling and sometimes falling a little too close to the water for his own liking.

When he reached Cuba, Tiago allowed himself to be ping-ponged violently from the Trades into the Westerlies, shivering as the colder currents tossed him up the Atlantic coast towards the woman who lived in the clearing at the bottom of the mountain.

“‘Take the message to the woman with the sad eyes,’ they said. ‘It’ll be fun,’ they said.” He mocked his keepers in his usual aristocratic squawk. As he spoke, Tiago’s head plunged into the frigid water that hemmed New Jersey, a screech replacing his dignified words as he shook the quickly-forming icicles off his neon green feathers.

“THEY NEVER SAID I WAS FLYING INTO THE WITCH’S TIT ON THE SHADY SIDE OF THE ICEBERG!” He hollered, flapping his short wings frantically to try and get over the worst of the air stream, hoping that hot air truly did rise and that he could gain some of that warm balmy feeling once more before having to plummet back down to earth.

Though it was only mildly warmer above the current, Tiago found himself worn out from his exertions, only managing to float above the cold air for half of New York before plunging back down and riding the frozen spiral of wind towards his destination.

“‘Where the earth meets the water, that’s where you shall find her. Where once was blood now only tears. Behind the White Mountain, reside your peers.’” Tiago recited, his keen yellow eyes quickly finding the spot, wings tucking in close to his body as he went into a free fall towards the small cottage.

The sound of his body cutting clumsily through the air caught Dyster’s attention, and despite enjoying a leisurely snack of leftover rabbit innards, his sleek black wings lifted him up like a bullet piercing the air. The two birds collided mid-flight, squawks and screeches like sirens in the otherwise-silent clearing.

“UNHAND ME, YOU SAVAGE! I COME ON THE ORDER OF THEOFINA!”

“Theo-who? Get off my land, you overgrown avocado!”

“Avo-Avocado! How dare you! Where is your mis--LET GO!--mistress?!?”

Spinning mid-air in a ball of green and black feathers, the two birds made such a ruckus that it woke Gunnar out of a dead sleep. Looking out the back door, he began to bark, knowing Olivia would want to see what was happening.

The racket woke both Olivia and Henry, and while the latter quickly rolled over and went back to sleep, Olivia knew Gunnar’s warning bark when she heard it. Putting on a sheer robe, she flew down the stairs, sliding to a stop next to the husky and following his gaze out to the stone circle.

“What in the…” she mused, Olivia slipping into her boots and stepping outside without a thought for the cold.

“Dyster! What are you doing? Let go of it!”

Hearing his mistress’ voice, Dyster unceremoniously dropped Tiago right into Gunnar’s open mouth, the husky holding the parrot gently in his maw.

“Oh, the torment! This is how I perish, at the hands of brutes! Mercy, mistress, I beg of you!” Tiago lamented dramatically, Gunnar rolling his eyes and giving Tiago a test squeeze before letting him fall to the snow with a wet plop. Olivia bent down and quickly picked up the parrot, brushing the snow off him and checking to make sure neither raven nor husky did any permanent damage.

“Thank you, fair maiden. I come on command of Theofina of the Order Athanato Fengari-” “Order of the Immortal Moon, I know. What does she want?” Olivia rolled her eyes at Tiago’s pageantry, already knowing her answer to whatever command Theofina had for her.

“My mistress requests your presence at the Order’s Imbolc festivities. Says she has important business to discuss with you regarding the past and your future.”

Olivia took in the words, remembering what the tea leaves had shown earlier; Good direction, a warning, travel, and the masculine. It was more than coincidence that an invitation to Rome should come not even a full day after the leaves had signaled travel. Already, they’d been right about the masculine and with a quick look over her shoulder at Henry’s window, Olivia was more and more certain that the leaves were, yet again, correct in their prophecy.

Tiago eyed Olivia warily as he waited for her answer, keen to get back to warmer skies and even warmer land.

“Don’t rush her, you useless sack of cabbage. She’ll answer when she’s good and ready.” Dyster cut in before the parrot could speak, landing gracefully on Olivia’s arm before pecking at Tiago as though testing his doneness.

“Dyster, be good. He’s an emissary, not dinner.”

“Shame. He’d make for good barbecue,” Gunnar replied before Dyster could, licking his chops as he growled quietly at Tiago, both he and Dyster ready to end the intruder should he step out of line.

“No one’s getting eaten!” Olivia said, her voice a little louder than she intended. With an exasperated sigh, she looked down at Tiago. “Tell your mistress she’ll have an answer after the new year.”

“But, she’ll make me-”

“New Year, Tiago. No discussion.” She cut him off, reading his name on the tag around his neck, one Tiago clearly forgot he had on by the look of shock on his face.

“So it’s true! Once again my mistress proves her superiority in all things, including secret knowledge. I shall fly home at once and pass along your remarks! Good day, my lady of sadness.”

The trio watched as Tiago took flight, their heads all crooked to the right as they each tried to figure out how such a hefty creature could defy gravity.

“It’s a spell, right?” Gunnar asked, eyes unmoving as they watched Tiago fumble his way higher and higher.

“Gotta be.” Dystra answered, fighting the urge to fly up after Tiago for just a little more fun.

“Who knows. Pompous little creature...” Olivia shook her head, turning to go back inside once Tiago was out of sight.

“Offensive too. Should’ve let me eat him....” Gunnar added, following her in as Dyster flew back to his perch.

To her chagrin, Henry’s laugh, coupled with his words, made her feel things she’d not felt in some time, and it only made getting upstairs all the more imperative.
