It’s the First Day of Spring
Spring Vibrations Today is officially the first day of spring for 2024. Here in central Florida signs of spring started about a month ago with some early blooming wildflowers and the occasional clouded sulfur butterfly. By now our iconic spring flowers, the Drummond’s phlox (Phlox drummondii), are popping up everywhere that there is open ground and plenty of sun. It always makes me happy to see…

Today I saw a liverwort for the first time!
I stood and watched a little heron perched on a tree and saw the most brilliant, jewel-like metallic blue and green dragonfly with wings the velvety black of the night sky.
The ironweed is blooming in rich royal purple, jewelweed in vivid orange, wingstem in bright sunny yellow, and cardinal flower in unbelievably vivid scarlet. Yellow goldenrod, magenta phlox, white Virginia clematis. Meadows and streambanks along the hiking trails are rainbowed with wildflowers. I appreciate wildflowers individually, but placed together their bright colors are a whole other tier or beauty.
There's a spot with a little meadow full of milkweed and the monarch butterflies have a breathless majesty that never goes away no matter how often I see one.
Walking home I heard a chorus of frogs and stopped for a while to listen to them.
Somehow I'm most excited by far about the liverwort.

You Call It Madness But I Call It Love
Chapter 3: The Summer Has to End Someday
Tumblr media
Pairing: Soldier Boy x f!reader, Reader POV
Summary: When the reader left Payback 40 years ago after a falling out with her childhood best friend she never looked back, but when two men show up to her apartment and start asking her questions about the past, the reader begins to think those things can’t stay hidden and starts to question what’s real and what’s fantasy.  This is a re-telling of The Boys Season 3, where the reader is a supe who's known Soldier Boy since 1927. The chapters will fluctuate between past and present. This is chapter three of my "You Call It Madness But I Call It Love" series. (I'm so bad at summaries please forgive me!)
Word Count: 2.9K
Warnings: References to sex, Cursing (once or twice), Drinking, Soldier Boy might be, is, really, absolutely, a little OOC,
Note: This is told from Reader's perspective. Any references to the reader is made using you or your. There is minimal use of y/n. I tried my best to proofread, but nobody's perfect.  Reader is occasionally described as "curvy." If you don’t like, don’t read, but if you do like, you’re my favorite!

Chapter 1
Chapter 2
*********************
Philadelphia 1935
"Sit still." You say, dipping your brush gently in the small pot of water at your knee, before stroking it through your paints and placing it against the pad of watercolor paper in your lap.
It was a beautiful day at Fairmount Park. Children ran across the grassy fields flying kites and avoiding the outstretched hands of their mothers, while couples lounged on blankets with picnic baskets overflowing with sandwiches and champagne. The sun was sending gilded light across the pond that gently rippled with the breeze that brushed through your hair, pulling it across your rosy cheeks that blushed under Ben's gaze.
It was your 16th birthday and despite your mother's insistence to take you shopping in the busy stores that lined the streets downtown, you had refused, choosing rather to come to the park and prepare your mind for the party that would follow this evening. You had already glimpsed the abomination of purple tulle that your mother expected you to wear and you hoped that a quiet afternoon in the park would wipe the monstrosity from your memory.
At least before you were squeezed into said dress later that evening.
"I’m bored." Ben stated, leaning back on his elbows where he was sprawled next to you in the lush grass that was no doubt staining the light blue dress that clung to your body. One you had chosen for yourself that accentuated the way you looked, rather than hid it as the other dresses your mother bought for you. However, when Ben came to pick you up this morning your mother had insisted you bring a coat, despite it being the middle of summer. You hadn't missed the flash of anger in Ben's eyes when she wrapped the coat around your shoulders to hide your curves. The same coat that Ben immediately removed when you walked out the door and threw over the wrought iron fence that surrounded the front of your home, before looping his arm in his to direct you toward the park.
"It was you who said you wanted me to paint you." You sigh, looking up at your friend.
Ben's navy suit jacket was open, the buttons of his matching vest and white shirt underneath strained as his muscular shoulders pulled against them and made your breath catch as your eyes traced them. There was a pale pink phlox flower in his front jacket pocket, one you stuffed there earlier despite the roll of his eyes. You had wanted some contrast between his suit and the color of the flower, and despite Ben's annoyance, he obliged you as he always did.
"I was hoping there would be less clothing involved." Ben grins at you.
"You know, no other gentleman speaks to me the way you do."
"I didn't know you considered me a gentleman y/n. I thought that you knew me better than that." His grin quickly shifts into a mischievous smirk that makes you bite the inside of your cheek and turn back to the page.
A year had passed since Ben got you watercolor paints and ignited a unquenchable passion for painting. Something about the way the colors ran together soothed you, the gentle stroke of the brush against the page calming the usual frustrations of your life.
One of which was sitting beside you, looking entirely too attractive for someone who'd just rolled out of bed and was wearing the exact outfit he had been wearing when he snuck through your window last night. This morning he had crawled out the window and rang the doorbell at the front of your home, acting as if he'd been up for hours.
You pause at the thought of last night. Ben was leaving for boarding school number seven at the end of the week, but the way he looked when he showed up the night before, rumpled and smelling of cheap whiskey, meant that he and his father had another disagreement. Despite his inability to talk about what happened, if it was your burden to bear, to always be there for him, you welcomed it.
"Hey." Ben's hand comes down on your arm to draw your attention back to him.
You look back up at him. "Hmm?"
"What's going on in that pretty little head of yours?" He turns his head to the side to examine you.
"Thinking about the party."
"Oh right. Should be fun. Can't believe I received an invitation. I thought your mother would have burned it-"
"She tried." You smirk. "I snatched it from the fireplace just for you."
"How thoughtful."
“Selfish really. There’s no way I’m going through one of those parties without you again.” You snort, catching his emerald gaze.
“The Christmas party was not that bad-“
“Says the guy who got drunk on eggnog and then preceded to flirt with a potted plant!”
“That potted plant was more interesting than that idiot How-“ Ben’s next words are cut off.
"Y/n!" You hear someone shout from behind you.
Howard Stine struts towards the two of you across the sidewalk, where a few other boys stand in a tight group. He’s wearing a sand colored suit and vest, with the chain of his golden pocket watch catching in the warm sunlight with each stride forward. At Howard’s appearance, Ben sits up from his relaxed position, leaning towards you.
“Speak of the devil.” You hear him mutter.
Ben nods his head towards the group of boys, who nod back in greeting. Ben was more popular than you. Your own circle of friends was reduced to Ben, your housekeeper, the gardener, and a handful of girls your own age that only wished to talk about how close you and Ben were and once they realized you were just friends, they then proceeded to ask you if you could set them up.
As if you would ever set them up with him, you were still trying to set yourself up with him.
A few of the group of boys you recognize as the sons of your father's friends and others boys you'd seen Ben stumble around with on the streets after a night at the bar around the corner. You watch Ben's left hand go to the flower in his front jacket pocket and crunch it in his fist before the others can see it.
The action made you smile to yourself, because despite Ben not wanting them to see him with the flower, he had still allowed you to place it there.
Howard blocks the rays of sun above you so that you don't have to squint up at him. He wasn't terrible looking. Howard was your height, with reddish brown hair that was slicked back over his head and he had a dusting of cinnamon colored freckles on his cheeks, but he was nowhere near as tall or broad as Ben. Where Ben was muscular, Howard was lanky, his hands small and sweaty. Ben moved with a grace and elegance that you couldn't comprehend, while Howard plodded along, stumbling on solid ground. Howard's pointed chin was nothing like the strong jaw of Ben's rugged face. Something that you studied whenever Ben was with you and you spent several nights devoted to capturing in your sketchbook.
"Hi Howard. How are you?" You smile at him, brushing back your hair from your face with your free hand.
Howard's eyes move from Ben to you, taking in your close proximity. Ben's hand was still touching your arm, and the tip of your knee an inch away from the outer edge of Ben's thigh. In fact, Ben had leaned towards you so close when Howard came over that his breath rustled through your hair.
"Good. What are you doing?” Howard moves a hand through his hair to tousle the reddish waves.
“Ben is obliging me. It’s a beautiful day and I wished to capture it.” You wave the brush in your right hand for emphasis.
“Ah.” Howard squints at the watercolor paper. “Well it’s certainly interesting. I didn’t know you liked to paint.”
“She likes all kind of things Howie.” Ben responds with a smirk, his voice dripping with suggestion.
Your eyes flash a warning to where Ben sits. He’s withdrawn his hand, but he’s still leaning close enough to you that you can smell the spicy scent of his shampoo and cologne.
It reminds you of this morning when you woke up and realized that Ben had pulled your back into his chest while he was sleeping. When his arm was curled around your waist as he buried his head in your hair and muttered something in his sleep that you couldn’t understand. The thought makes you flush bright red, remembering how wonderful and intimate it felt to be there.
Howard ignores him. “We're all going to go to Wallman's on the corner for shakes, I was wondering if you wanted to come?" He doesn't acknowledge Ben.
“Well-“ You begin to say, taking in the beauty of the pond and your paint stained hands.
The truth was you didn’t want to go, you wanted to sit there in the grass forever with Ben, where you couldn’t tell if you were warm because you were under the golden light of the sun or under Ben's gaze.
“She’s busy.” Ben says before you can finish your sentence.
Howard’s smile becomes tight. “I think I was asking her.”
Ben shrugs. “And I think I just gave you an answer.”
"Why don't you just-" Howard begins, but Ben is already up off the ground, pressing his chest against Howard's, his green eyes blazing in the light of the sun.
"Why don't I just what Howie?" Ben's voice is low, the deep rumble stirring something in the pit of your stomach.
You loved a lot of things about Ben, but his temper was not one of them. Ben rarely lost his temper with you, yes you did annoy him and he would lose his patience, but he often turned that anger into teasing.
"Ben." You stand, leaving your watercolor pad on the ground, so you can place your hand on Ben's shoulder. It was supposed to be a gentle reminder. Ben knew that you were more than capable of making your own decisions, but you couldn't help but wonder why Ben had responded the way he did.
Is he jealous?
Ben looks down at you with a frown, but finally he sighs and takes a step back.
Howard's eyes are narrowed at where Ben now stands to your right, Ben's arms crossed over his muscular chest, but Howard's gaze shifts back to you expectantly.
"Howard that's really sweet, but it's getting late and I have to get ready for the party tonight." You force a giggle to ease the tension in Howard's shoulders. "You are coming right?"
"Of course." He smiles. "I was hoping that you'd save a dance for me."
"She-" Ben begins to say, but you elbow him in the side, hard.
"Of course I will."
“Great. I guess I’ll see you tonight.” He frowns one more time at Ben before turning back to the group of boys on the sidewalk and leaving with them.
Ben stands there for a minute watching him go.
"You should try to be nicer to him." You say, tugging on the sleeve of Ben’s jacket to grab his attention.
"Why?" Ben snorts.
"Because-" You shrug. "He's sweet and he’s interested in me. I’d hope that you two would get along.”
Ben rolls his eyes. "You could do better."
"Last time I checked the suitors aren't exactly lining up. Not to mention you tend to scare them all off." You wave a hand around you for emphasis. "And I'm not getting any younger."
"Neither am I, but you don’t see me settling for Howard Stine.”
"I didn't realize he was your type." You snort rolling your eyes at him as you sit back down in the grass and pick up your painting again. "I haven't seen you courting anyone recently."
You try to keep the happiness from your voice at the thought. Ben hadn't been trying to chase after as many girls in the past few months as he had previously. And you wondered if his father was trying to arrange him with anyone. If Ben’s mother had still been alive you knew that she would have found someone suitable for Ben, but you’d heard your father say something to your mother behind a closed door that Ben’s father had asked about one of the daughters of his work colleagues.
The thought makes something in your chest tighten to the point of snapping. You hated the idea of watching Ben court someone else, watching someone else kiss him, run their fingers through his hair, and hated the thought that Ben would spend the night with someone else other than you.
Of course when he spent the night with you, all you did was talk, but it was possible that Ben might find that sense of companionship with a lover rather than you.
And then where would you be? Alone.
Ben reclines back as he did before, shaking his hair out behind him, and closing his eyes. It's lighter in the sun, more of a honeyed brown than the usual oak. "I leave in a week."
"Hasn't stopped you in the past." You mutter more to yourself than him.
"Maybe nothing has caught my eye." He opens one eye to study you.
"Hmm."
“Or perhaps I’d much rather spend my last days of freedom with you.” He flirts with a wide smile.
“Last days of freedom?” You laugh, ignoring his tease. “We both know you’ll probably be back within the month.”
Instead of laughing, Ben’s smile fades into a frown and you wonder if he’s thinking of his father.
“Ben I’m sorry I didn’t mean-“
Ben shrugs it off and pulls out a silver flask from his jacket pocket. As soon as he opens it, the sour smell of whiskey floats through the air before he takes a swig. He holds it out to you, but you wave it away, focusing back on your paper.
"So if he's the one, why didn't you go with him to Wallman's? You made up a bullshit excuse that you had to go home." Ben takes another pull from the flask, but you can't shake the shift in his tone.
"I wanted to finish painting." You say to avoid the truth, that you didn’t want to leave him, because you could tell he was still upset over whatever he and his father talked about last night. “But I do need to go home. Mother is no doubt waiting with a horde of maids to make me presentable.”
You frown to yourself imagining next few hours where you would be slathered in creams, your hair tugged and swept up over your head, your body scrubbed almost painfully, and finally the corset that would cut off your circulation and make it impossible to breathe.
You wondered if any other girls your age were subject to such torture.
“Just admit it y/n, you find Howard as boring as a sack of flour.”
“He’s from a good family, he’s a gentleman. My mother would be pleased-“ You start to say, defending Howard even though you didn’t like him as much as you liked Ben.
“Your mother would be pleased with a cactus as long as it meant getting you out of her sight.” Ben snaps back.
His sharp words sting against your skin and you drop your eyes to the paper again, welcoming the silence that follows. Because he was right.
Your mother thought you were a disappointment. She had started comparing you to your sister-in-law who was flawless, effortlessly beautiful and graceful. Your mother voiced her disapproval many ways with disapproving looks, snide comments on what you wore, how you looked... It wasn’t for lack of trying. You did whatever she asked but each time it was never good enough for her. You weren’t enough. And it was something you kept close to your heart. Ben knew that better than anyone.
That’s why his words hurt so much.
“Sweetheart I’m sorry-“
“It’s okay.” The tears that burn in your eyes smear the image of the page in your lap.
“Y/n please look at me.”
You don’t raise your head. “I should go. She’ll be mad if I’m late-“ You begin to put away your things.
Ben’s fingertips come to your chin, tilting it back to look at him once more.  He looks sorry. His green eyes are paler now, like clover, wide and open, his mouth pulled down into an apologetic frown.
“Please don’t go. I’m sorry. Just stay a little longer.”
You sit there for a moment, his hand cupping your cheek and as a tear falls Ben brushes it away with his thumb. The gesture is gentle and surprising. Ben tolerated the occasional hug, but this was more intimate. It made your breath catch.
“Okay.” You whisper.
Ben relaxes and drops his hand from your face, but he’s still watching you. You know he’s trying to think of something to say to make you feel better, but when he can’t come up with anything, he reaches over and plucks another flower from the bush on his left, before stuffing it in his front jacket pocket.
It enough to make you smile and this time he returns it, understanding that he's been forgiven. You allow the warmth of his gaze seep into your skin and you bask in the warm glow of his smile.

April’s full Moon often corresponded with the early springtime blooms of a certain wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata—commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox—which also went by the name “moss pink.” Thanks to this seasonal association, this full Moon came to be called the “Pink” Moon.
Other celebrations:
• Walpurgis Night - April 30th
Also known as: May Eve
The origins of the holiday date back to pagan celebrations of fertility rites & the coming of spring. After the Norse were Christianized, the pagan celebration became combined with the legend of St. Walburga, an English-born nun who lived at Heidenheim monastery in Germany & later became the abbess there. Saint Walpurga was hailed by the Christians of Germany for battling "pest, rabies, & whooping cough as well as against witchcraft". Christians prayed to God through the intercession of Saint Walpurga in order to protect themselves from witchcraft, as Saint Walpurga was successful in converting the local populace to Christianity. Although it is likely that the date of her canonization is purely coincidental to the date of the pagan celebrations of spring, people were able to celebrate both events under church law without fear of reprisal.
Walpurgis Night is still a traditional holiday celebrated on April 30th in northern Europe & Scandinavia. In Sweden typical holiday activities include the singing of traditional spring folk songs & the lighting of bonfires. In Germany the holiday is celebrated by dressing in costumes, playing pranks on people & creating loud noises meant to keep evil at bay. Many people also hang blessed sprigs of foliage from houses & barns to ward off evil spirits, or they leave pieces of bread spread with butter & honey, called ankenschnitt, as offerings for phantom hounds.

Denoiser wisdom
Since a lot of people showed interest in my workflow of using SD like a renderer for existing sketches, I'll be sharing the little tricks I find while exploring the capabilities of SD with Neuroslug. Read the inpainting post to understand this one. When inpainting, the model takes into consideration what is already in the area it regenerates and in the areas around it. How exactly it'll follow these guidelines is determined by denoising strength. At low values it'll stick closely to the areas of color it sees and won't create anything radically different from the base. At high denoising strength it'll gladly insert colors, shapes and silhouettes that weren't there originally. Basically the more you trust your sketch the smaller your denoising strength should be. It doesn't mean you won't need the high denoising at some point. Let me explain it using yesterday's artwork. It all starts with a rough sketch.
Tumblr media
Since I have a particular composition in mind and want it to be maintained, I'll be using a low denoising strength to fully regenerate this image.
It means that the algorithm won't have enough freedom to fix my large-scale mistakes, it's simply not allowed to change the areas of color too dramatically. So if you want to do this yourself make sure to set the image to black and white first and check that your values are working and contrast is good.
To make sure the result isn't too cartoony and flat I used brushes with strong color jitter and threw a rather aggressive noise texture over the whole thing. This'll give the denoiser a little wiggle room to sprout details out of thin air.
Tumblr media
It kept the composition, the suggested lighting and the majority of flowers kept their intended colors too. This was denoising strength 0f 0.4. To contrast that, same base image with denoising at 0.7:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's pretty, but it's neither the style nor composition I wanted. Let's refine the newly redrawn base to include the details that were lost in transition. These were intended to be roses.
Tumblr media
It's here where I learned a little trick. You can mix and match different models to achieve the look you desire. Neuroslug is good at detailed moths and painterly environments. It's not good at spitting out really detailed flowers, they end up looking very impressionist which is not what I want in foreground. So, I switched to an anime focused model and let it run wild on this bush with high (0.7) denoising strength.
Tumblr media
Nice definition, but it looks too smooth and isn't in line with what I want. Switching back to Neuroslug with denoising at 0.5 and letting it work over these roses.
Tumblr media
This way, I get both the silhouette and contrast of the anime model (counterfeitV30) and the matching style of Neuroslug. It's also useful in cases where the model doesn't know a particular flower. You can generate an abstract flower cluster with the anime model and use the base model to remind the AI that what you want is in fact a phlox specifically. So I did this to basically every flower cluster on the image to arrive at this:
Tumblr media
It's still a bit of a mess but it has taken me about 80% of the way there, the rest I'll be fixing up myself.
Tumblr media
My "Lazy Foliage" brush set was really helpful for this. I'll release that one once it accumulates enough brushes to be really versatile. Now we block in the character.
Tumblr media
Yes, I left the hands wonky since I intend to be drawing them manually later, same about the foot. There's so much opportunity for the AI to mess them up that I'd rather have all the control on these details.
Tumblr media
When it renders the face it can really mess up everything, so I do it with low (0.45) denoising strength to discourage new eyes popping up in inappropriate places. Take note that I kept the antennae out of the mask. AI is easily confused when one subject overlaps the other.
Tumblr media
Good, good. Wait. Why are your eyes hairy? Now, mask out the eyes, remove all mention of fur from the prompt and
Tumblr media
That's about right. Since the eyes are all one color block I can afford to raise the denoising strength for more wild results. Same for areas of just fluff on the entire body, it's all one texture and having the denoiser at 0.6-0.75 is beneficial because it's going to add locks, stray hairs and other fluffy goodness. Just make sure to not make the mask too tight to the silhouette, it needs some space to add hairs sticking out.
Tumblr media
With the skirt it was back to really low denoising. The folds I blocked in make sense with the position oh her legs under it, so I didn't want it to be lost.
Tumblr media
Lastly, I drew in a flower that she's planting and ran over it with moderately high denoising to make it match the surrounding style. Ignore the biblically accurate roots there, I'll fix them by hand.
Tumblr media
One last pass over the whole thing in Procreate. I draw the hands and add details such as the round pseudopupils, face ridges and wing markings to keep the character consistent with the previous image of her. And a bit of focal blur for a feeling of depth. Phew, even with generous use of AI this whole thing took an entire day of work. In the end what determines quality isn't the tool you use but the attention you choose to pay to finding inconsistencies and fixing them.

I Love You- Wait, What?
Tumblr media
|Pairing|: Wednesday Addams x gender neutral reader
|Warnings|: THIS IS CRACK, Ooc! Wednesday Addams, author kind of gave up on writing after the third perspective shift, honestly this fic is just a joke at this point, potion works weirdly here, stupid love confessions, panicked but low-key high! Wednesday Addams.
|Summary|: You ruin everything for Wednesday Addams, be it sleeping peacefully or good potion-making.
|A/n|: This might as well be titled "I Gave Up on Quality" with the pairing of Wednesday x @vorsdany . I am really sorry but also not really. I promise I write better fics than this.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
A moron.
That's what you are.
"No, I'm pretty sure I put in the right stuff. Snake fangs and then lavender, right?" You scratched at your back while stretching your sore body as carefully as possible.
With the cauldron, textbooks, parchments, and various ingredients scattered across Wednesday's dorm room floor, you're pretty sure the girl will smack your head if you spill the potion in the making the second time.
Wednesday pointed at the procedure text in hand; you sighed as you leaned forward to read. Okay. Great. So you managed to mess up not only the order but also the name of the ingredients.
"Snake tail? Well- You know what? I can't help you make this mystery potion if you don't tell me what it's for."
"You were the one who insisted on being a nuisance, might I remind you," Wednesday scoffed as she crossed her arms, brows coming together at the disaster liquid filling the pot.
The potion glows a wine color, its light casting a shadow on the ravenette's tired face; the dark bags underneath her eyes compliment her overall corpse-like look. You wouldn't worry because somehow this appearance works a charm for her, except her behaviors have also resembled the living dead.
"Well, it's because you look like you can use some help-"
"I do not need help, especially not from you."
Wednesday didn't even look up as she said it, nose buried deep in whatever book she was reading. Why do you even bother to put up with her at this point?
"Fine! I'm leaving, then." No response.
If she is going to act like you don't exist, you might as well sabotage her top-secret project. Hands swiftly switching the marked lids of two flower jars—white periwinkle and phlox—you stand up and make your way across the room, heading for the door.
"Good luck, Wens." You throw her an open smirk you know she won't see before exiting the room.
You can't wait to see her fail.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
Wednesday lets her body slump as soon as the sound of your footsteps recedes to nothing. The past week has been... restless. And she meant that quite literally. For some reason, her past vision invades her mind when she tries to subdue her consciousness.
With her eyes closed, the picture was as blinding as it is irritating, like daylight to her pitch-black heart.
It always started with a smile—that annoying smug one—plastered on a face she knew too well for her own liking. And then, echoes of laughter would haunt her, taunt her.
She hasn't let it go farther than that. She couldn't. If Wednesday is going insane, it'll be from the intense torture she befalls upon herself. Not from such unwelcomed twisted imageries that plague her mind.
"Descendamus somno sempiterno, donec corpus e carcere reviviscat." Wednesday speaks in her best Latin, fingers trembling as they throw the right ingredients into the cauldron.
She watches the liquid turn colorless—a telltale sign that it's successful—and sighs in relief.
Finally, her sleeping potion is ready.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
You turn your head to the sound of a familiar booming voice calling your name across the cafeteria. Enid, the werewolf, approaches you with a daunting look on her face. How unusual.
"No bone-crushing hugs today?"
No response. Why is everybody ignoring your words?
"Something is really wrong with Wednesday."
You huff at her while you take a seat. "Really? Because I'm pretty sure she just kicked me out of your room half an hour ago." You grab a brownie from your plate and take a bite out of it. "That seemed pretty normal to me."
Enid raises her eyebrow at you knowingly. "Well, what did you do?"
"Nothing!"
A couple of heads turn both your ways. Suddenly, the ceiling looks very interesting. You can see Enid waving dismissively at the crowd from your peripherals. Face contorting in an apologetic look, you take another bite from your brownie.
"Anyway, she told me my sweater looks like a lunatic splattered their guts on it."
The piece of cake dropped off your mouth. "That means she's into your sweater," Enid raised her eyebrows speculatively as she handed you a tissue, "Did she just give you a compliment?"
"As a matter of fact, yes I did."
You and Enid jump at the chilling voice from behind you.
"Dude! You scared the heck out of me," you turn your head to see Wednesday holding a glass of red liquid. She looked drowsy—subdued almost.
"First of all, never call me 'dude' ever again," the ravenette seated beside you groggily, "and second of all, I thought I made a point that fear feeds my entertainment needs."
"Oh yeah, I forgot you do that-"
You take a pause. Enid immediately notices the look on your face.
"What? What's wrong?" The werewolf asked you in a hushed tone. The raven watches as she takes a sip of her drink.
"Did you just- Did she just-" You pull away from Wednesday in disbelief, "reply to the things I say?"
The girl in question only raises her eyebrow at you, the glass of pomegranate juice resting on her now red-stained lips. Then her brows slowly meet in the middle again, perfectly mirroring her look from earlier.
The glass produces a thud as Wednesday puts it down on the table. You and Enid share a look with each other. A concerned look. One of you has got to say something right now, and you aren't going to be the one to do it.
The sentiment is shared apparently because the blonde also has her mouth trapped shut.
Clankings of dishes. Chatter comes from the crowds. The room was far from silent, but for some reason, it was as if everybody was waiting for Wednesday's response. The tension thickens in the air as the girl turns to look at you, despair etched in her features.
"I need your help."
You take the last bite out of your brownie. The sweetness resembles something of a victory.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
There must be something wrong with the potion; Wednesday figured out as much. She expected that after the drowsiness took over and her heartbeat slowed, she'd finally be able to shut her mind and get some much-needed rest.
But it was the opposite; while her muscles may have relaxed, the images flashed through her brain with newfound intensity.
The smug smile, the laughter that resembled screeching metal chains, the mischievous twinkle in those eyes- Oh, how those eyes dragged her feet through the corridors of Ophelia hall.
Nothing made sense anymore; Wednesday needed to find the source of her madness and stop whatever is happening at the very core.
She needs to stop you.
But not before throwing Enid a merry compliment along the way and giving Eugene a preposterous nickname.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
"Bee Man? That's what you came up with?" You're almost rolling on Wednesday's dorm room floor, hands coming to clutch your contracting stomach; if Wednesday doesn't kill you now, the laughter certainly will.
"Yes, but can we please focus on the task at hand?" The ravenette clenched her jaw, "You're supposed to be helping me find the problem with the potion-"
Boisterous cackles cut through Wednesday's words, and you swear you can see fumes coming out of her ears. "-not to laugh at a genuine, original nickname."
"Yes, but he asked you to give him a nickname and BEE MAN-" you wheeze uncontrollably, eyes tearing up at the absurdity of it.
If you knew changing one ingredient would've given you a very talkative and silly Wednesday Addams, you would've done so during potion class ages ago.
"Okay, okay, I'll tell you what I did," you take a deep breath, hands coming to pick up one of the vials containing water-like liquid; eyes scanning the mystery messed up serum.
"But, only if you answer my questions first."
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
Wednesday was ready to whip out a dagger to your neck and make a new potion from scratch, but without identifying the real problem, she'd risk committing the same mistake again.
After all, she'd been meticulous in following the instructions. So it couldn't have been a mistake on her part.
Begrudgingly, she nods, bracing herself for whatever question you may throw her.
You flashed her a teasing smirk, and Wednesday could've sworn it was almost identical to the ones that haunted her every time she so much closed her eyes. A mere coincidence. That's all that is.
"All right, question number one," you cleared your throat before resuming, "Pineapple on pizza, yes or no?"
This threw Wednesday off. And as if you could read her mind, you added a quick, "and no, there's no significance to these questions. Just answer them as is."
Recalling the intense debate Enid has dragged her in with Yoko in the past, she thanked her roommate internally for the fact that the werewolf has basically force-fed her the food.
A simple 'yes' slides out Wednesday's mouth, and you move on to the second question—still with that annoying smirk plastered on your face.
"The second question. Mint chocolate ice cream for dessert, yay or nay?"
"Yes."
"Beep-boop, that's not the proper answer to my question. You have two more chances of getting this correct!"
Wednesday feels her face scrunch in exasperation, "I thought you said there's no signi-"
"One more chance until you're disqualified! Please choose your words carefully," you wiggled your eyebrows at her, and it took everything in Wednesday not to smash the spare potion vial at your face.
"Yay. The answer is yay."
"Yay, indeed!" you make a grand gesture by lifting your hands in the air, "Onto the next question. Which one do you put in first; cereal or milk-"
"Milk. It's milk. Next question please."
"Ohoho, eager are we?" you stand up and grab the textbook Wednesday had used earlier for the potion-making instruction. Now Wednesday has all her attention on you, eyes narrowing in laser focus as anticipation for your upcoming words.
"Finally! The most important question of this compatibility test, and no matter your answer, I'll tell you what you desire to hear most!"
Your fingers tap and dance on the book's cover—imitating the sound of drumrolls—and Wednesday almost mauled you then and there if not for your question;
"You, Wednesday Friday Addams, have a crush on me, yes or no?"
The ravenette surprisingly sinks in an internal debate at this.
Just say no. It wouldn't matter. You'll know why the sleeping potion doesn't work after this. Just say no. What is stopping you? It's so easy. The answer is no. Just say-
"Yes, I do."
What?
No, no, no, no. This can't be. Correct yourself. Say-
"I do have a crush on you."
The book you're holding dropped to the floor. Wednesday looks up to see your mouth gaping, eyes darting all over her face as if you're looking for a sign of her joking.
But there was none. There was just a surprised look shared between the two of you.
Wednesday quickly grabs her book and flips through the pages hurriedly.
The slip-ups, compliments, and the awful nickname. The love confession. Could it really be?
Wednesday's fingers slowed down as she reached a designated page, her eyes scanning the room to see two almost identical flower jars at the foot of her bed, only differentiated by a label stuck on the lid.
And when Wednesday caught your guilty face looking at it like her, she knew.
White Periwinkle and Phlox. The two kinds of flower that are similar in appearance but differ significantly as ingredients of a potion.
"A truth potion," You both breathed out into the room.
And you look at Wednesday; she's looking at you.
"So it's true then?" The shakiness in your voice surprised the two of you, forcing you to clear your throat for the second time in her room.
"It is what it is," Wednesday tears her gaze away from yours to the book in hand, covering her flushed face with the extent of her bangs.
"Unless we managed to mess up the truth potion too, then maybe-"
"No, no, no, no, because," you drop to the ground and kneel at the space in front of her, hands hurriedly opening the vial containing the liquid that had started it all. Wednesday panically looks at you now, and you smile at her before chugging the whole thing down.
"I have a crush on you, too."
And there it is in all your glory; bright smug smile, childish laughter, and mischievous eyes. It finally clicked for Wednesday that you—yes, you—are her eternal living nightmare. She'll make sure you pay the price for all her sleepless nights.
And it's not gonna be cheap.

Pink Moon - April 6 2023
Prepare for the blooming season and make sure you take those allergy meds - it's time for the Pink Moon!
Pink Moon
Named for the appearance of spring flowers, in particular the early springtide ground phlox, the Pink Moon often coincides with the first bloom of the season, with trees and fields in flower and a profusion of color returning to the world after the long bleak greyness of winter. Despite the name, the moon itself does not turn pink to match.
The April full moon is also sometimes known as the Paschal Moon, being the first full moon after the spring equinox. The Christian Easter holiday, which has a floating date, occurs on the first Sunday after the Paschal Moon. Alternate European names for the Pink Moon include Egg Moon and Budding Moon, and some modern pagan traditions call it the Awakening Moon. Indigenous names for this moon include Breaking Ice Moon (Algonquin), Budding Moon of Plants and Shrubs (Tlingit), Moon When The Ducks Come Back (Lakota), Planting Moon (Tunica), and Frog Moon (Cree).
Farmer's Proverb: A full Moon in April brings frost. If the full Moon rises pale, expect rain.
What Does It Mean For Witches?
The Pink Moon is a time for reconnecting with yourself and the world around you. The world is giving a good yawn and stretch after a long winter's sleep and so can we! Get outside if you can and get some fresh air. Explore your area, especially if there's something or someplace new you've been meaning to try. Revisit old haunts and discover what's changed since the last time you were out and about.
Take a moment to assess your current goals and mark your progress. Celebrate your growth and learn from your setbacks. Assess your boundaries as well. Are you making enough time for yourself? Are you letting things or tasks or people intrude where they shouldn't? Is there anywhere that you should be standing firm but aren't? Balance dedication to your work with playtime and relaxation. Remember that you are not required to set yourself on fire to keep others warm. Take time to care for your own needs and address those "I'm Sure It's Nothing" health concerns you've been putting off.
What Witchy Things Can We Do?
By the time the Pink Moon comes around, there's either one more cold spell working its' way through or the first true warmth of spring beginning to appear. If the temperatures are rising to sunny pleasantry in your area, it's the perfect time to start planting your garden.
Whether you have a few pots on a patio or a fully-planned plot or just some well-beloved houseplants, get your fingers into the dirt and transfer those seeds and sprouts to a nice fertile home. You can work various kinds of magic as you do, for growth, fertility, prosperity, tenacity, resilience, protection, whatever seems needful. If you grow your own plants for your magical practice, you can also bless them for their intended purposes. If you don't garden (and not all of us do), you can grab your field guide and pruning scissors and go foraging.
For a fun and easy full-moon spell, set out some gallon jugs of potable water to make Pink Moon Water. This will be excellent for watering your garden...and yourself! (Rainwater isn't safe to drink these days, and water collected from wild sources is dicey even if you boil it, but drinking water works just fine.) You can also cast spells for creativity, change, fertility, happiness, adaptability, and growth. Use whatever methods resonate with you and remember that the most important component of any spell is the witch who casts it.
The earth is blooming, so let's bloom with it!
Happy Pink Moon, witches! 🌕🌸

The First Beautiful Phlox Flowers are Here
First Phlox of Spring The last two days have been miserably rainy and kind of cold, keeping me pretty much confined to the house. Days like that always make me feel tired and blah, so I was very happy to see the sun shining this morning when I woke up. When I headed into town to complete some errands, I was also very happy to see a few little Drummond’s phlox flowers (Phlox drummondii) blooming…

The Full Moon in Scorpio April 23, 2024
The pink moon is named after the phlox subulata flower, also known as moss pink or moss phlox, which blooms in North America during the springtime. Scientifically, the moon can sometimes appear to have a pinkish hue because of the particles floating in space that filter out certain colors, altering its appearance on Earth. The full moon will be visible to stargazers after sunset, on the eastern horizon, as it rises and reaches potency on April 23 at 7:49 p.m. ET.
This full moon is a powerful time for change, as Scorpio is a transformational sign. It pushes our limits, deepens our sentiments, exposes our fears, heightens our intuition, and allows us to understand ourselves on a deep level. The water sign is co-ruled by action planet Mars and evolutionary Pluto, which will bring out a lot of intensity, emotion, and desire. The Scorpio full moon is about transcendence and growth. However, we will feel the tug between passion and practicality, due to its opposition to the Taurus sun. What we want may differ from what we need, but that won’t stop us from moving forward.
This lunation squares Pluto in Aquarius, making it an event that will push us to think differently and break free from the past. We’ll be able to let go of old ways of being, thinking, and loving in order to embrace a radical perspective that aligns with our current values. Situations and emotions buried in our subconsciousness may also come out at this time. Pluto will stir up past matters and make us confront them and deal with things head-on. We may decide that the best way to handle this is to look at our shadow self and hug it, enriching our souls with unconditional love and confidence.
The Scorpio full moon presents an opportunity for new beginnings. It’s a time to reflect on our deepest desires and take action towards realizing them. Self-awareness and passion are key ingredients in manifesting our goals. It’s important to have faith in ourselves and trust that the universe will support us on our journey. With the Lyrid meteor shower in effect, we should make a wish on a shooting star to ensure our dreams come true.

Update on the native wildflower shade garden . . .
Since my last post about the sharp-lobed hepatica several weeks ago, the wildflowers in the shade garden have made a significant push. All of the live plants I put in the ground last fall have made it through the winter, and many of the seeds I planted have germinated and sprouted. Quick survey:
Top: the spreading Jacob's ladder (Polemonium reptans) is mounding beautifully and positively dripping with violet-blue, bell-shaped flowers. The plant lures many pollinators, including bees, flies, butterflies, moths, and beetles. And that foliage is so lush and green . . .
Next one: woodland stonecrop (Sedum ternatum) has established itself in the nooks and crannies of one of my rock features and is getting ready to bloom.
Next two: although the sharp-lobed hepatica (Hepatica acutiloba) has nearly finished blooming, the real joy starts for me when the leathery, thrice-lobed leaves with their often deeply-variegated patterns begin to unfold. This is flat-out one of the most unique and gorgeous wildflowers of North America.
Next one: creeping woodland phlox (Phlox stolonifera) makes for an enchanting ground cover and will spread quite rapidly in the right conditions. I have strong feelings for all the native phlox species, but this one has stolen my heart. It's native to a narrow strip of the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Pennsylvania. In the spring around here, it absolutely lights up streambanks with its dainty pink to rose-colored flowers.
Next one: dwarf-crested iris (Iris cristata) is another lovely groundcover but beware - it spreads like wildfire. The lavender and yellow to orange-crested flowers are a treasure to behold from late April to early May. And its arrow-like foliage provides much-needed contrast in the garden.
Next: among the seeds I planted, the yellow pimpernel (Taenidia integerrima) is making the strongest push. The plant produces yellow-flowered umbels similar to golden Alexanders and is a high-value nectar source for many pollinators. It's also the host plant for the black swallowtail and Ozark swallowtail butterflies.
Next two: anyone who visits this Tumblr regularly needs no introduction to heartleaf foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia), my unofficial poster child for Appalachian spring. I simply would not have a native wildflower garden without it. One of my foamflowers is a hybrid (sugar and spice) cultivated for its deeply dissected leaves and intense variegation.
Last (but not least): my eastern red columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) pretty much takes cares of itself - it's one of the best starter wildflowers for beginner gardeners, hardy and undemanding. But man, does it produce loads of beautiful red and yellow, bell-shaped flowers.

Yesterday, I sought assistance in identifying the flowers adorning Jaskier's shirt in the season three trailer.
Tumblr media
I express my gratitude to all those who provided assistance in my quest to unravel the symbolism behind the flowers. Although arriving at a definitive answer proved challenging, I have compiled a comprehensive list of the various interpretations associated with each flower. By examining these interpretations, I hope to glean valuable insights and uncover any hidden messages they may hold.
Once again, thank you to everyone who contributed their knowledge

Pale Wood violet.
Tumblr media
Let's begin with the pale wood violet. This delicate flower holds the symbolic meanings of "Modesty" and "Humility," and it is often regarded as a representation of innocence. Traditionally, bunches of violets were exchanged as gifts for newlyweds, symbolizing their pure and humble love. Violets carry deeper symbolic associations, including faith, mystical awareness, inspiration, spiritual passion, abundance, and sovereignty. In ancient Roman culture, the violet flower was interpreted in a somber light. The deep color of the flower was seen as a reflection of spilt blood, while its soothing fragrance added a peaceful ambiance to various occasions.
Wood Phlox
Tumblr media
Moving on to the wood phlox flowers, they are also able to carry deep symbolic meanings as well. As a symbol of unification of hearts and souls, these delightful blossoms are meant to foster harmony, unanimity, and a spirit of partnership through the blossoming process. Their significance lies in the fact that they symbolize compatibility and are associated with sweet dreams. A close clustering of the flowers in the elegant head of the plant lends the symbolism of unity and unanimity to the flower. In addition to this, there is some evidence to suggest that phlox flowers possess magical properties, particularly in the realm of friendships and relationships. It is believed to possess magical powers capable of enhancing bonds and casting spells of friendship and love. Moving on to the wood phlox flowers, they carry profound symbolic meanings. Forget me not
Tumblr media
Now let's delve into Forget-Me-Not flowers. These delicate blooms carry a multitude of meaningful messages. Primarily, they serve as a poignant symbol of remembrance, whether in times of parting or after the passing of a loved one. Additionally, Forget-Me-Nots represent enduring connections that transcend challenges and the passage of time. This could be in the form of steadfast friendships or any other kind of unwavering loyalty one may possess. These flowers also hold the power to evoke cherished memories shared with someone special, serving as a gentle reminder of those precious moments. Moreover, Forget-Me-Nots are often bestowed upon individuals dedicated to caring for the underprivileged or disabled, further emphasizing their association with compassion and empathy.
The Thistle
Tumblr media
Lastly is The Thistle, commonly known as the Scottish thistle and the national emblem of Scotland, holds various interpretations and legends. Although often linked to negative symbolism, it represents resilience, endurance, and the ability to overcome adversity. It symbolizes the idea that success requires overcoming obstacles, as conveyed by the Spanish proverb "He that has a good harvest must be content with some thistles." The thistle also signifies self-defense and protection, reflecting its prickly nature and cautioning against unwanted meddling. However, the thistle also embodies positive qualities such as bravery, independence, and the fierce spirit of Scotland. Its sharp prickles serve as a reminder that strength and beauty can coexist, highlighting the Scottish people's resilience and determination.

𝐃𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 (𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐞'𝐬 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐡𝐥𝐨𝐱) Colored pencil, watercolor, and acrylic paint on paper. 17 x 12 3/4 in
Dame's rocket and phlox have an interesting relationship. Both are often confused for the other, you can tell them apart by the number of petals their flowers have. Phlox = 5 and dame's rocket = 4. But dame's rocket is invasive, while phlox is technically native. However, the phlox you might find in your garden center isn't necessarily native to your region and may hop the fence and push out other locally native phlox species. And as far as monarchs go, they'll get nectar from either happily. What's invasive versus native isn't always clear cut.
