Quote
Traditionally, Republicans have viewed higher education as job training, so the metric for doing a good job is how much money graduates make. Democrats have tended to regard it as a place where students learn to think for themselves and criticize things they see as wrong. These views are not really compatible, and it is clear why college towns are hotbeds of anti-Republican politics and why the Republicans are unhappy about that.

I go to college in a college town, meaning the university is like half the city and everything is geared towards students. There’s a game store that my friends and I really love and they have a D&D club for kids ages like 8-14 or something and I was lying in bed thinking about it being mad because that’s a massive missed opportunity so I checked the website to make sure I wasn’t gaslighting myself and turns out you can apply to GM there which, y’know, I’m not going to do because I can barely handle 5e mechanics as a player but that’s hella cool

COLLEGE TOWNS: WHY I LOVE THEM
COLLEGE TOWNS: WHY I LOVE THEM
What is it about a college town? Quaint old buildings, beautiful trees, and a reminder of a simpler time in your life. I’ve always loved a college town, whether a small community or a larger sprawling campus. Some of my favorite college towns aren’t even college towns but are right in the middle of vibrant cities. My love of college towns It may be rooted in my love of books, libraries,…

Odense - Something to Strive For
Getting to Odense on Friday, we cycled on a rail trail for eleven miles and then transferred to a train. The rail-trail was a set of train tracks that were repurposed because it is an excellent site for a trail. This is because train tracks have to be on a relatively flat and straight path to run safely. While we cycled, I learned about how American government entities want to make trails that have to be a certain width to account for the potential of eventual usage increases. This is not intuitive because it sets the bar too high for certain projects to ever come to fruition. Nick mentioned that this requires paths that would not be able to be made to be 14 feet in width (approx), which is wider than most paving machines - meaning it doubles the cost. Also, train tracks usually sit on 10-foot width sections, which would then need to be increased…it seems like we just don’t want to make it feasible to make trails. Another thing about rail-trails that will be difficult in the US is that our rail companies have very strong control and command over their rails, even if they’re decommissioned. That means that if we wanted to create a trail like the one that I rode on, there would be several hoops to jump through. Anyways, it was a very pleasant ride, the weather was perfect, nice and cloudy, and we went at a nice pace to be able to chat about infrastructure. I wrote more about how the train station went in a previous post, so I won’t get into that here and I’ll just skip to Odense itself.

Odense is the third-largest city in Denmark, with a population size of about 180,000. The fact that a city of comparable size to Eugene (170,000) is one of the largest cities in the entire country is crazy. I wonder if working in Denmark means that you feel like you have a bigger impact with your work, due to the smaller size. Odense is also a university town like Eugene, meaning it has the same fluxes and flows of the population moving in and out of the city depending on the time of year. I think that this is an interesting case study to do since we’re studying transportation infrastructure to take back home. What amazes me is that Odense just opened its first light rail line throughout the city last month. I know light rail is not even on the table for Eugene currently from their feasibility studies. Why not? I asked Andrew about this at one point, and for one reason or another, it’s not on the table for Eugene. I would assume this is because we need to get more work done just on our buses and their usage to even begin to think about light rail. Overall, I really liked the feeling of Odense, maybe because it’s a university town with transportation, I don’t know. I think it’s been one of my favorite locations so far, and I’d probably visit again. A lot of my classmates complained about the city feeling empty or dead, but I didn’t mind all that much. I like the slower pace that summer gave it, just like how Eugene slows down during the summer term. It had beautiful parks, interesting architecture, and a great foundation in transportation infrastructure.

On Friday, after our rail-trail adventures, we arrived and went across the street from the hostel to a cafe where we sat and waited for our rooms to be available. I got a chai and found it to be too sweet, which confirmed my hypothesis that the Danish do not know how to make a good chai, and seem to think it’s a full dessert item. I was really tired by that point, so I almost passed out at the cafe since they had really comfortable pillows. Anisha was nice and let me have half her sandwich since it was going to be too much for her. Eventually, we were able to drop off our stuff real quick and see our rooms, which turned out to look like they were out of the Nickelodeon hotel from the mid-00s; interesting color decisions and all. We’re talking multiple purples and bright blues, and something nearing bowling carpet. After settling in for a few minutes, we all walked over to meet Connie, a transportation planner with the city, and had our tour with her, where she showed us some infrastructure around Odense, including a bike/ped bridge across train tracks, and traffic calming measures in front of an elementary school. There were polka dots on the street, which added to the school's playfulness but also made drivers slow down to process the different visuals. Later that day I went out with a group to Storms, a food hall near the harbor, where there are tons and tons of food options. I ended up getting an Indian chicken bowl, which was fine. It was a very fun place to go, and there was a party vibe with the Tour De France being televised in the entrance area.

The next day, Saturday, we had a professional panel in the park with Robert and Catherine, as they were leaving our class. The park was gorgeous and had a river running through it, and I really loved how big and natural it all felt, even in the center of a city. Later that night, Brendan, Nick, and I hung out in a park until it got dark after another dinner at Storms, to play some cribbage. I loved that I felt safe enough in Odense, a city that I had never been to, that I could hang out in the park that late without any fear.
On Sunday, I rode the light rail down to a laundromat with Anisha and Peyton, with my laundry in a big bag. It was simple- I paid with an app, got on, rode three or so stops, and then got off, probably all within ten or fifteen minutes tops, and there were trains running every ten minutes or so. It even had stops at good intervals. Convenient, fast, simple. Afterward, I went out on my own and got extremely good Thai food on my own before meeting up with Brendan and Tam at a pool hall. We played pool for a while and then walked back to the hostel in the rain for our evening meeting.
Overall, Odense felt like a city that Eugene could strive towards. It has beautiful green spaces, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and even light rail, all while being comparable. It was a city I felt safe in, and that ebbed and flowed with the time of year. This isn’t all to say that Odense is the perfect town- but that the things that the planners of Odense have accomplished are in fact possible for a city of its size and scale.

if you're wondering why bob is here it's bc in the original villareal story there was a very minor background detail that diego lobo and bob pancakes dated in college and broke up tragically and that's where the story peaked. so i included him it's still canon
thank you for these it was so fun!!!!!!!!!!!!
i did these in my this is the fall sim style so i'm thinking. if they exist in this universe what's all their opinions on the 'did jacques do it' situation. let's take a look
don: saw a photo of jacques's wife on the news during the investigation. said "whoa mama that's a hot babe!" like johnny bravo and did not read the headline. does not know anything about it still.
vlad: well he's psychic he could figure out the truth if he actually cared. and he has!
olive: obviously respects it. except for the getting investigated part, would never happen to her.
diego: does not think jacques did it but enjoys the tabloids. knows other rich people personally who he thinks have killed their spouses
morgyn: will post things like "friendly reminder that j*cques v*llareal literally killed his wife and is a billionaire so maybe don't go to one of their hotels" on tumblr and will then do a call out post about like a fanfic writer who wrote an unhealthy relationship with more severity
pascal: knows conspiracy theories and this one is bullshit. or maybe it just doesn't interest him as much as aliens and that's why he thinks that
jeb: has a very "well of course he did. them rich folk can do whatever they want. there ain't no hope for the rest of us" while kicking a can down the road approach
bob: thinks he did it. is very alarmed that it was brushed off. eliza's like bob book the hotel and he's like am i going crazy. does anyone hear me.

Jazz joins the Suicide Squad to save Danny
So! Danny got caught by the GIW. And it was Public too.
Jazz can see absolutely no way to save Danny. The GIW Base is heavily fortified, she has no help aside from Tucker and Sam, and public opinion is against Ghosts, so nobody would want to help her protest his Capture. Maybe a few teenagers from the high school, but absolutely none of the adults would help.
So she does the one thing she can. She contacts Amanda Waller.
Waller had previously approached her Parents about buying some of their tech off them, for her "Specializes Task Force" to use in case they ever came up against a Ghost.
From the short interaction Jazz had with Waller, she knew one thing.
That Woman would do ANYTHING, to protect the Government she worked for.
All Jazz needed to do, was offer her something that outweighed the value of capturing Danny. Information. The Infinite Realms, the True Biology of Ghosts, the Psychology of Ghosts, the Power Structure of the Realms, and so much more. Waller needed to know everything she could about the Realms to feel secure, to feel like her Country was safe. She needed Information.
And Jazz had that in spades.
As the daughter of the Leaders on Ectology, and a friend to multiple Saptient Ghosts, including the Kings and Queens of various Realms, she was uniquely qualified to provide all this information.
And Waller was impressed. But she still felt like she needed a little more, and seeing as Jazz was a highly trained Martial Artist due to her Mom, and had been taught enough about mechanical engineering by her Dad to constitute a Major in in, she saw potential.
She saw a Pawn. Perfect for placement on Task Force X. Her Suicide Squad had been missing an extra member recently, and Jazz was the perfect fit.
So they made a Deal.
Danny Fenton, also known as The Phantom, would he released from Government Detainment, alongside any other Sentient/Sapient Ghost in their possession. They would he protected from further Detainment until further Notice, and the Town of Amity Park would be left alone by the GIW Indefinitely.
In return, Jazzmine Fenton would be hired on as Amanda Wallers On-Call Consultant for anything related to Ghosts and the Realms. Additionally, she would be employed as a Part Time Member of Task Force X, answering the call of Duty whenever is is directed as her, No Questions Asked. (Or the deal would be null and void)
But she would Endure it. Because she and Waller had one thing in common.
She would do Anything, to protect her little brother.

some of the gayest things i did w my girl besties as a kid that haunt me daily even though i'm almost 25
laying on the hot cement of the playground watching the clouds, talking about which boys we'd date in class, and i look over at her and notice how the sun is turning her black hair slightly red in the sun and sigh and say "i wish i were a boy, 'cause then i'd date you"
made a new best friend a little after her who was a year younger than me and i wanted to live inside her skin, a little bit, and went over to her house constantly. i drew her silly art, those weird emo blobs from the mid aughts, and she hung it up on her door. we joked about being married a lot. when i had to move away across the country, one night i was staring up at the moon while listening to a love song and started sobbing wondering if she was also looking at the moon. i never texted her again.
when i was 12 i fell in love with a girl for the first time i knew about. i had just gotten over being weirded out by gay people & when the kids in class started whispering about us being dykes, my teacher called home about it. i cried my eyes out in a red pickup truck with my mom as i told her i was in love with her, but it was fine because she was straight. i was drinking a red slushie.
once with that same girl, we went on a field trip to a nearby science museum. it was within walking distance and she held my hand the whole way, even though we were too old for it. at some point i started swinging her hand and knocking into her and laughing and eventually she just picked me up, put me on her back, and carried me the rest of the way while we laughed. at the museum, she kept finding me and holding my hand again. i went home that night, so giddy, and just kept thinking about her hand in mine and didn't even care about what the rest of the kids were whispering
in february, before that, she'd asked me which girl i had a crush on in class because i'd posted about it on tumblr. it took me a half hour to finally tell her it was her, blushing to my ears as we walked around the perimeter of the playground (we were at a small private school with less than 100 students, so even the middle schoolers got to use the playground), refusing to look at her. she told me she didn't feel like that, but i was still her best friend and she wasn't mad at me or weirded out. if one of us were boys, she said, maybe it would've worked out. her mom moved her back to california at the end of the school year. i never saw her again and she wasn't allowed to talk to me. she messaged me once, years later on here, to tell me i was pretty in a prom dress i'd tried on. she blocked me later.
i wrote down a story about her, a year later, for 8th grade english class. in it, i imagined that she'd never left, and that she'd kissed me while we laid in the grass, mixing up my stories and my life. my teacher looked at me with such a soft sadness and told me it was very beautifully written. she wanted me to submit it to a contest. it won.

i kinda hate the eric s6/7 storyline. he was so committed to leave and then suddenly he's a loser with no future. i also never understood why he had to give up college in the first place. where i am from it is normal to go to college in your home town, why was that not an option for eric? you can stay home and take care of your family while going to college in town like there's no reason to stop going to college altogether

There is something deeply funny to me about the fact that, of people who pray the rosary (at least in the United States); the Catholics tend to be super conservative, and the Episcopalians/Anglicans tend to be gay.
