Closed Position: Deconstructing Dieter Bravo

Closed Position Masterlist ||| Main Masterlist I did a Deconstructing Dieter Bravo series for Destiny & Deliverance, so I thought it might be fun to continue that tradition with Closed Position since this Dieter does have some interesting things going on that we can delve deeper into.

I had several people comment/dm me about two things after the first chapter that I think would be fun to discuss further. Those were of course, Dieter’s plant hobby and the fluffy menace hanging around his house.

To most, these two things may seem very random and unrelated. However, they really aren’t. They do serve a bigger purpose to the story…because of course they do. When do I ever not have deeper meaning behind something, right? 😏

Plant Dad Dieter

First, I have included some more Dieter aesthetic pictures above that I had saved. It's a whole ✨vibe✨. Second, I must thank @readingiskeepingmegoing for coming up with the new #PlantDadDieter hashtag… because it’s so on point. I’m totally going with it! 💜

On to the good stuff...what have we learned about Dieter after the first installment? I think we can safely identify three things: he spends a lot of time alone, he feels misunderstood, and he doesn’t appear to have any deep or meaningful relationships. This will be a theme that comes up a lot with him, especially starting in Week 2 when we open with him having a chat with his therapist.

How does this relate to plants, you ask? Let’s start with Dieter’s history…the man has never had a real relationship. He’s never connected with anyone, whether that be friend or significant other. He was a party boy that indulged in the physical pleasures of life while avoiding any real intimacy. Most of his relationships were based on sex and favors. We will worry about why he is this way later, but for now, just know that’s where he's at emotionally.

Dieter has never really had a bond with anyone or anything. Now that he is sober and realizing how alone he is, he’s seeking that connection any way he can and doesn’t even really realize it (yet).

Sure, being a plantsman does have perks as it is relaxing and can have a positive impact on one’s mental health. However, it’s causing Dieter to learn how to care about something - how to be selfless and nurturing with his time. He has to put in a lot of effort to keep everything alive and healthy and he quickly realizes that putting in that time and energy makes him happy. Also, the plants don't judge him or his past.

Now, for some fun stuff because some of you asked…

Does Dieter talk to his plants? He 100% talks to the plants. He doesn’t know if it actually does anything, but he figures it can’t hurt to try. It also helps him feel less alone as he does see them as living things. They do breathe, eat, and drink after all.

Does Dieter name his plants? I’m inclined to say that he names his favorites. All the others just have random nicknames that change based on their appearance. Like...the "thirsty dramatic bitch" that gets weepy and needs to be watered and turned in the sunlight daily.

So, I pulled a few pics from Pinterest of what I envision Dieter's furry little visitor looks like. I see it as an adorably fluffy young Maine Coon kitty.

Funny story, I did not know that fact before choosing this breed. It looks like it was mean-to-be for our loveable trash panda. 😂

Now, I am sure you're asking; how does the cat relate to the plants? The cat serves the same purpose when we think about Dieter's relationships...or lack thereof.

Again, Dieter is craving companionship. He is still reluctant, but this little nugget will eventually become a loving companion for him. It's another avenue for him to create an emotional connection with something. He will learn how to care for the kitty and build a bond. Though the little menace can be a bit sassy, like the plants, it also doesn't judge Dieter by his past. What do you think Dieter should name it? I'm taking suggestions in the comments. 😉

In an odd way, the plants and cat do help Dieter grow as a person. It's baby steps in his personal growth journey. Honestly, as Katrina gets to know Dieter on a more personal level, these are two things that she absolutely loves about him, mostly because it's two things that are unexpected and show what a sweetheart he really is. She sees the good in him even if he can't see it himself.

the idea that they’re writing the season as they go so they’re seeing the reaction the audience has and that it (even in the smallest way possible) could have an impact on what happens this season (and in future seasons) is so wild to me. not saying that they’re seeing our response and saying “oh that sounds good, totally writing that in,�� but it’s not impossible to say that they will see what the people want, realize the best way to generate buzz and excitement and increased viewership is to keep your fans happy, and then actually do something about it instead of killing characters/storylines just for kicks

neutral side to a workplace w/shop cats: i have heard each of my coworkers meow at least once, which is odd but neither good nor bad

downside to workplace w/shop cats: one is obsessed with knocking over cups, making water placement a delicate act. also he once knocked a glass bottle of hot-sauce onto one of the machines and i had to clean it all up while he just sat there and took in the free entertainment

Dieter Bravo x OFC (Katarina)

I haven't done any writing on Closed Position this week. I know! I'm sorry. There were a few details I was still thinking through that happen later on and I wanted to be sure I was on the right path to get us there. However, I have been working to nail down those details and fill in my outline with the important stuff. I think I have a pretty solid path set at this point, so I feel a little more confident going forward with writing.

Since I don't have any snippets to offer this week, I bring you a mood board of things to come. Each image represents an event that aligns with some part of the plot.

Behind the Scenes

In addition to working on my outline, I've also been doing A LOT of research, as I always do. That includes details on hotels and prep/filming schedules for tv shows to really nail down the 'behind the scenes' aspect of things. I'm even making song choices for Dieter & Kat’s performances based on the beat count required for each dance.

Believe it or not, these types of details do help form the plot of the story. Sometimes those small details will spark an idea for putting the characters in situations I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. While it does seem a little crazy to do, it does actually help me in writing...but it does make me a little slow sometimes. 😬

The Crown of Arsur was perfection itself.

She had an air of grace about her, her every movement as slow and deliberate as the waters lazily following along the river under the summer sun.

Her voice was light, pretty, like the jingling of siren flowers in the breeze.

And the way she looked at those around her, with a soft, golden glow that made the hearts around her skip a beat. It was a capitvating gaze, a gaze where one could easily find themselves becoming lost infor hours at a time.

One that you found yourself lost in.

The long awaited Crown of Arsur came from humble origins, the enchanting sight of her tending to her garden evidence of that. 

Even some in the nobility could never deny the beauty of Her Imperial Majesty, her carefully cultivated blossoms adorning her hair. 

Each part of her as carefully cultivated like the rest of her.

You however, knew the truth.

Kulîlk wasn’t perfect. She wasn’t infallible.

You knew of the days and nights Kulîlk spent perfecting her every movement, from the way she picked up items to the very way she took air in her lungs- all done honed to perfection.

You heard her voice beyond the doors to her chambers, drilling speeches and pulling at every vocal chord in her throat, all in an attempt to find the proper voice.

You’ve witnessed her different masks yourself, how quickly that brilliant smile fades from your Crown, just to appear once more when rounding the corner. The very same smile you’ve seen her practice over and over in the mirror. 

And while many enjoy seeing Kulîlk’s work when strolling the gardens, you instead see her hands, you see the cuts and callouses she tries her best to hide away from the world. All signs of her hard work, the many labors she’s had to endure to become the Crown she is today.

And they were beautiful. Every last one.

How could they not be? After all-

Sometimes I REALLY hate this game (aka. Fire emblem in general)

I've been going through all the training battles before I go onto the main thing for chapter 12. For completionism and also bc I fucking Need the training, holy shit

Anyways I got one for the rainy map from chapter 11. Aka where I was running my life. It was awful then, but WAY WAY WAY WORSE now. Bc they skattered my army across the entire map, some of whom are Very squishy, and gave us over twice as many enemies as I had units, almost all flying, and All of them advanced classes

It was a massacre. Unit after unit falling. Me desperately trying to get the survivors across the map so they could help each other survive. Hiding in the woods in hopes of them missing me, bc being out in the open is a death sentence.

One by one, my units fell. My Healers all fell. My Mages all fell. A few lingered through luck alone... but then it was down to 3. From an original 12.

Me, Alcryst, and Louis. I'd been trying to protect Alcryst bc he's my archer and there were SO. SO SO SO many fliers. I never did get him over to me. I sent Louis over to assist me bc my ass kept DYING & that gets a game over lol. So imagine a dragon princess just guzzling potions in the woods as her armor friend throws javelins over her shoulder. I made it work.

Poor fucking Alcryst though. Stuck in the woods alone, having watched the 3 around him all fall, clinging to his mini bow bc he was literally SURROUNDED and couldn't attack anything otherwise. Also guzzling potions. The literal only reason he didn't fucking die was luck alone. Those fucking woods, man. They made all the difference.

Not that it stopped me from dying like 4 times from like 13% chance hits :) I used that time reversal feature more in this battle than I have Ever before in this game.

#speculation nation #engage spoilers/ #genuinely surprised i won that bc i still had like 10 enemies left when it was down to just 3 #once the last healer went down i was Convinced i was gonna lose. but i kept going anyways bc im stubborn #see the problem is that positioning is everything in this game. especially on hard mode. #the squishies gotta go behind the higher defense units. healing the higher defense units so they can take all the hits #you have to be careful with your surroundings. pay attention to who can reach who. and account for it. #but this map? there was none of that. there was absolutely no hiding anywhere. bc the enemies were EVERYWHERE #and they could all FLY so they werent even impeded by the woods. it just made it harder for them to hit you. #so all the squishes died so quickly. i tried to protect them the best i could but they were gone Just Like That #Louis was the literal only one who was unbothered but that's bc he's got a Godly level of defense. i love armored units. #i felt so bad for Alcryst. the moment where he was surrounded on all four sides by enemies & below 25% health #i selected his unit and he made this miserably terrified noise. a resigned fear like he Knew he was going to die #that's the moment i switched him to the mini bow. had him down a vulnerary. and was like. Good Luck. #and he somehow managed to pull through!!!! it was very Very close. #like. man this entire battle was almost cinematic for how disastrous it was. yet how i still managed to pull through. #says smth about how good i am at this game maybe. hard mode will Not keep me down #also yea yea i know i dont Have to play hard mode. listen. i enjoy being forced to think extra hard about tactics #i love fire emblem For The Tactics. if it's too easy it's no fun! #i love a good challenge. unfortunately this time wasnt even that fun bc i didnt get anything good in the end :/ #just battle experience. for the handful that survived lmfao. #but you know what i made it through and that's what matters.

i am in such a weird place socially i love my friends and i’m so glad i’m getting closer with them but also everyone i know seems to hate each other and it is getting so exhausting. just be a good person why is it this hard

Different! #But - if we end up just buying takeout every dinner it could end up being So Boring. So quiet. #Or even worse: if he gets sick and I travel alone I'd have to rent a cottage ALONE from a complete stranger of a 'private renter' man #And that’s a risk factor if I've ever heard of one (not to mention I'd be bored out of my skull alone for five days) #On the other hand: #Hotel room would mean we get to sleep RIGHT. NEXT. TO EACH OTHER. FIVE NIGHTS IN A ROW #Not just completely alone but also super close and with potential for so many casual silences or intimate conversations and hgggggh #Unless he's a jogging in the morning person - We'd wake up and eat breakfast at the same time! Brush our teeth together in the bathroom! #Use it as an extra dressing room to solve the logistics of giving each other some privacy when changing in to and out of our pajamas! #Imagine how cute it could be to introduce some kind of knocking system to signal 'I'm ready!' and for him to respond 'Go on!' #Or 'Hang on a second!' to sync our dressing routine #Aaaaa~ #But but buttttt - what if he always finds a reason to stay outside of our room? #What if he prefers to go outside and network with other members in the evenings? #What if he manages to find another man willing to share a room with him and he just decides to leave ours for me to use? #There are so many ways where things could end up less interesting than I'd hoped or for him to decide to put space between us #'Just because' or because he wants to call his family or maybe because he doesn’t even realize I want to share my time with him #I'M JUST NOT SURE WHICH OPTION OFFERS THE MOST POSITIVES WITH THE FEWEST DRAWBACKS #I've even created Lists and I'm no closer to finding out which option I'd prefer #The cottage is a gamble but could offer the highest bonding reward while the hotel room is the safest option #With the most convenient location in terms of proximity to restaurants and city center but much further from the conference center #Gamers: I'm at a loss.
