So which vegan cheese toastie reigns supreme? Violife Original Block 🧀 Neutral, creamy taste with no coconut aftertaste. Could be overwhelmed when paired with stronger flavours. Applewood Vegan Smoky Cheese 🧀 Pleasant smoky taste, melts really well, best used when you're after a really strong woody cheese. Vitalite Dairy Free Block Cheese 🧀 Most ‘cheesy’ flavour, 10/10 meltability factor (technical term). My personal favourite has to be @vitalite for the best overall flavour and texture. While we love experimenting with our #artisanalspreadsformorethanjustbreads ®️ and hearing all the amazing ways our faithful #jamfam uses them, some times there is nothing like a good old #classicsandwich! 🥜 🍇 🍞 James’ lunch today was a brown bag time machine to my own childhood, crafted with @purplecarrotbread country wheat bread, @qsnuts peanut butter, and our #ConcordGrapeJelly made from @autumnhillsorchard Concord Grapes. And though he turns little down (with a pallet like his dad 🙌) it’s always a win to get a seal of approval from our quality control department. 😋 The perfect nostalgic lunch while we read old books and play our family tree game (just cause he can see them, doesn’t mean he can’t learn all about both sides of his #famdamily). 😂 Basic as it might be, this is still and likely to be one of those ingrained comfort foods I’ll always mix into my days. On tonight’s episode of the Coronavirus Cooking Diaries I present you the with what I consider to be the king of sandwiches, the delicious BLT! The Bacon Lettuce and Tomato sandwich is an All-American classic. I happen to prefer mine with cheese. Where and how the BLT originated is a bit of a mystery but John Mariani hypothesizes the BLT evolved from diner/lunchroom slang: "Lunch counters have provided etymologists and linguists with one of the richest sources of American slang, cant, and jargon, usually based on a form of verbal shorthand bandied back and forth between waiters and cooks. Some terms have entered familiar language of most Americans--"BLT" (a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich)...and others--but most remain part of a bewildering and colorful language specific to the workers in such establishments." ---The Encyclopedia of American Food & Drink, John F. Mariani [Lebhar Freidman:New York] 1999 (p. 190) Barry Popik, an etymologist expert, provides us with his take on the creation of the classic “The BLT sandwich (bacon, lettuce, tomato) possibly cane from Chicago and was named after its famed Chicago Tribune writer BLT, or Bert L. Taylor. The "BLT" is first cited in print in 1941." This sounds highly coincidental. Colorful columnist Bert Leston Taylor (AKA "BLT") passed away in 1921. References to "BLT" sandwiches appear in 1950’s but really gained popularity in the early 1960s. I don’t really know or care how and where the sandwich came from.
