It’s such a magnificent image which perfectly reflects the story within its pages. This book is a Afrofuturistic YA set in a dystopian New York that has been ravaged by climate change. The rich get to live Up High and continue to thrive while those left on the ground have to fight to survive. Working extremely hard to perhaps one day have the opportunity to join them for a better way of life. This is a powerful read that weaves important issues so relevant in society today into its fantasy coming of age story. Climate change, class issues, racism, drug use and poverty are just some of the hard hitting subject matters. As the protagonists discover they have emerging extra-ordinary powers it makes them question why and how best they should use them. They discover more about their ancestral past in the hope it will empower them to fight for their futures. HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY TO NUBIA: THE RECKONING !!

We finished reading Nubia: The Reckoning, the sequel to Nubia: The Awakening, last night!! We are soooooo excited to have Omar Epps and Clarence A Haynes return to Sistah Scifi Wine Down Wednesday this week!

We think the NUBIA Series reads as a perfect blend of Marvel's Black Panther and Marvel's X-Men.

Like Wakanda, Nubia is a hidden African utopia rich in resources and magical technology. There is Prof X/Magneto ; T'Challa/Killamonger dynamic between Uzochi and Lencho. In Nubia: The Awakening and Nubia: The Reckoning super powers are the result of Nubian ancestry and the descendent's connection to the kinetic which is awakened in adolescence versus genetic modifications from the Weapon X program as is the case in the X-Men.

If you loved the powerful relationship between Dr. Jean Grey (Dark Phoenix) and Scott Summers (Cyclops), you will swoon for the love story between Uzochi and Zuberi.

Oh, there is something for Octavia E Butler fans too! In the Nubia: The Reckoning there is a two thousand year old malevolent soul that can jump from body to body that will do anything for power. Raise your hand if that reminds you of Doro from Octavia E Butler's The Patternist Series!
