Love and Redemption Rewatch: ep. 1

I genuinely love and adore this show but with how little content there is for L&R, I had to made some for myself.

Beware of SPOILERS for the whole story! Seriously...

I'm so excited!!! The opening song is still so good and still so full of spoilers. Like really, Si Feng with the wings??? The creators were not afraid... it was a choice.

Who do we have here? Yep, they have shown our bird and our monkey right off the bat.

The whole opening monologue is such a great misdirection! They even say it - one comes after the other! But the viewer expects two players, so this very suspicious setup is completely disregarded.

Wow, they really show everyone, don't they? :)

The concept of soul AND primordial spirit was very hard for me to grasp the first time, but rewatch makes it quite clear.

I swear I have seen this guy somewhere...

Yep, it's this guy from The Journey of Chong Zi.

This is ANOTHER great misdirect because we know that God of War and Star of Mosha are going to be reincarnated at the same time and OF COURSE Si Feng is here... so who could he possibly be, am I right? :)

And another great thing? The demons genuinely don't have the most important information either. :D

I almost forgot that they need Rahu Ketu's weapon to unseal the cup... all these macguffins to keep track of.

And this ist how the story tells us that Xuan Ji and Ling Long are twins... pretty easy to miss.

Ten months?? That's quite post-term!

Ling Long is amazing from the start. Protective older sister is something I need more of... and Ling Long is fierce!

The introduction of Min Yan is also on point: the only one who can keep up with Ling Long and never leaves her, but at the same time is always backed into some corner by her.

He is regretting it already... :D

Ling Long is talking about all these "handsome men" she gets to meet and Min Yan is not amused...

I have questions! Are all of these golden winged birds?? If so, do they really cast out so many potential warriors? To fend for themselves in hostile world without their powers?? That's rough AND wasteful...

I can't decide which picture sums up the Master of Li Ze Palace (does he have a name???) better, but I love him and his terrifying claws.

The bird lantern! There truly is foreshadowing for everything, if you know what to look for!

Yuan Lang's and Wu Zhi Qi's "friendship" is so interesting to me, because sometimes Yuan Lang almost looks like he means it... but the powerplay always comes first.

Wu Tong goes from awestruck to smirking in 0,2 seconds and then proceeds to bully the sister of the girl he likes... it's actually quite realistic.

I honestly can't remember when Si Feng stops stammering... I will have to look out for that.

Ling Long isn't afraid to say it. :D

Min Yan still isn't enjoying the whole "let's look for handsome mysterious guys" vibe, but Ling Long has him figured out.

The relationship between these two is extremely enjoyable right from the start. :)

I think this is the scene that made me definitely fall in love with Ling Long. She is determined, driven, protective and smart, and she is not afraid to use tactics like this - the crying and evocation of their mother is extremely well done and the way she immediately cuts her crying once she gets what she wants is hilarious. No one can mess with her sister, not even their own father!

This is a very specific morning routine. It can't be easy to make your tea from dewdrops fallen from a plum tree... just saying.

This relationship is off to a very bad start.

I already forgot how hostile Si Feng was at the beginning. I would feel bad for Xuan Ji, but she doesn't mind...

Si Feng is repressed and Chuan Ji is absolutely clueless about everything and it's very entertaining to watch. :)

The candle dragon sounds are genuinely scary.

This is a very impulsive decision on Chuan Ji's part and one she should have thought out better. She knows the rules, knows that the mask is important. What is she hoping to achieve by taking it off? It frustrates me a little, this lack of forethought, but the story needs it to get moving.

And here is another clue... wow, that's quite a lot for episode 1.

One episode was enough to rekindle my love for most of these characters... this rewatch could get quite annoying unfortunately . :)

I know it is sad to see that xuanji didn't completely trust si feng in crucial times but I don't know why I can't get myself to be angry about it. she didn't trust him and that led to si feng getting so hurt. This is incredibly devastating to si feng, audience and even to xuan ji. But there are other factors at play. I think my sympathy for her rises from the fact that there is so much emotional manipulation happening to her. It is very sad to see she is always, always in the dark about so many things even in heaven and the mortal realm. like her decisions were always made by others. So much abuse in all those lives. And even when si feng didn't tell her about her true identity and did all that, I just wanted her to know the truth. I know si feng is protecting her from the world but I just wanted her to be aware of the truths of her origin and life and make a decision for herself and by herself whatever the future may be. But God seeing si feng get hurt is so devastating. He gets utterly heartbroken and still cares and protects her.

Latest on Anle:

1. By now I dislike every character in this mess. LMX is a manipulative user. Han Ye is a gratuitous masochist. Anle is morose and dreary enough I am confused as to how either man is obsessed with her unless it’s purely for looks (there is a way to make a dark and revenge driven and damaged woman who puts her goals ahead of love and ain’t got time for fluff interesting - see Dowager in Bloody Heart or Shu Qi’s FL in Red Dust or Ha Ji Won’s FL in Empress Ki) but Anle ain’t it.

2. I confess I laughed when Han Ye volunteered to do public penance barefoot. Surely you forgot your flagellation tools, young man?

3. It’s pretty clear that LMX and Anle are drinking as much of HY’s blood as they can because they can’t go after the real guilty party, the emperor, and are just projecting on a target that is not only available but is literally hanging a “kick me” sign on himself. That makes me think less of all three of them.

4. It’s a tough competition but Anning wins Idiot of the Drama award. That actress has no aura of the general, not even a cosplay one, but the atrocious script is doing her no favors by saddling her with the brain power of a toddler.

5. Why Han Ye hasn’t yet informed Anle WS is her brother is beyond me. “Because drama!!!” Is not a good answer.

6. I keep fantasizing about importing Sima Yi from The Advisors Alliance or Cao Cao from Three Kingdoms 2010 or hell, even Li Chu from Glory of Tang Dynasty or (to use a current drama), Cousin Cang Xuan from LYF into this world and having them take over this kingdom of morons in two days.

6a. Han Ye is a sweet person but in any real world situation that dynasty is doomed when someone like him comes to the throne unless his advisors are somehow an improbable combination of madly loyal and utter sharks. I wouldn’t trust that man to run a trading caravan ruthlessly, smartly and efficiently enough.

7. On plus side, all three mains are very pretty and the acting is fine in light of what they’ve been given. Still, if you want to watch Dilraba do a lady with agenda role, you are best off watching The King’s Woman or even The Long Ballad (and god and my mutuals know I am no fan of the latter.) If you want to watch Gong Jun be brilliant in a period setting, Word of Honor is that way. And if you want to watch Liu Yuning as an ambitious tragic schemer, go check out Heroes (go check out Heroes anyway, actually!)

To conclude: if color beige was given a drama form, it would be this drama.

li zi wei / huang yu xuan, someday or one day. taiwanese drama.

boy meets girl. boy dies. girl time travels about 20 years into the past and meets boy's doppelganger, except he's older than he should be in 1998. turns out boy is ALSO a time traveler, and he waited years to be reunited with the girl in her original timeline after meeting her in 1998 😭. boy still dies. girl goes to correct the timeline again. in order for the boy and the girl's friends to survive, they have to erase the timeline where they meet, and all their memories together, and they choose to do so. it's implied the boy will still meet the girl someday, one day 😭😭😭. a follow up movie (with the same cast!) is going to be released soon, but the original drama is perfect on its own and their story hits all the best bittersweet notes.

this story is like someone took all my favorite fanfics from when i was 14 and injected it straight into my veins!! xiao lanhua is an unimportant orchid fairy who accidentally frees the leader of the moon tribe (the fairies' #1 enemy), certified big bad and girlboss dongfang qingcang, who has sealed away his emotions for a power boost. over time, the two of them grow closer and understand one another better and if you're someone who likes "i'll burn the world down for 1 person" with notes of devil/jesus or hades/persephone this is 100% absolutely your ship.

idek where to begin with these two, but ugh. ugh!! ugh!!!! the way they killed me over 16 episodes! definitely an unconventional couple, do hyun soo is a suspected serial killer who's been on the run for over 15 years, and cha ji won is his wife and also a detective recently assigned to hunt him down. their story is just such a raw and lovely look at trauma's effects on people and they're so ride or die for one another and their daughter. it's wonderful to see a love story about a long-term couple, as well.

THE ship for you if you like inverted gender dynamics, masochism tangos, and 10 lifetimes' worth of pining and star-crossed lovers. thousands of years ago, there was a god of war who was punished to live 10 lifetimes on earth so she could unlearn her hatred at heaven. chu xuanji is her 10th and final mortal incarnation, a girl who can't understand the 6 senses and lives with her father's martial arts sect, although she can't practice martial arts or cultivation herself. sifeng is a member of a rival sect, a sect that forbids love, marriage, or children from its members. it's revealed that sifeng has loved and followed xuanji through 9 previous lifetimes that all ended violently for him, and this is their last chance to break the cycle/get their happily ever after /;3;/

what i love most about this one is that it flips the script on gender dynamics-- sifeng is a martyr for love and xuanji is the overpowered one who struggles to understand her feelings. here's one of my favorite scenes where xuanji reveals her hidden powers to save sifeng from being whipped to death

sung deok sun/choi taek, reply 1988. korean drama.

the other love stories on this list are all fantasy-based or have extraordinary circumstances, so i figured for this last one i would pick a love story that's just so wonderfully normal and grounded. a lot of people got second-lead syndrome from this series, but i am empathetically not one of them!!

deok sun and taek are childhood friends and neighbors who grew up together. it's evident early on in the series that taek loves deok sun, and he's always honest about his feelings, but it takes deok sun a little longer to realize she's in love with taek. what i love about this ship is that it's really quiet-- we see them fall in love with small moments and through their actions/behaviors vs. large, grand confessions (although we get a great confessional moment near the end of the drama too!!). there's also such a great balance between birds of a feather and being complimentary toward one another.

Top 5 Danmei canon couples only (to make it harder? 👀)

canon couples? canon couples? anon who do you think I am, someone who gets really attached to canon pairings

(also are we qualifying as "canon" here "specifically they actually get together on page" or like... "heavily subtextually implied"." I'm going to assume you meant the first one, but boy is it tempting.)

(I'm not wholly serious but I am wondering if I can get to five with this, considering a number of the ones I've read only really have one explicitly canon pairing...and I haven't read all that many, and I don't like listing things by, like, default. I want to actually have strong feelings.)

1. Hua Cheng/Xie Lian. Hands down my favorite of the three MXTX novels and definitely of all time. They're just. I love them. I love them both as characters and their dynamic is so good. Astonishingly not fucked up for a pairing I have such good feelings about but somehow it works.

2. Mo Ran/Chu Wanning. On the other hand! Very fucked up, at least sort of. Less so later. But also still. But woof what a pairing. I have vol. 2 of the published translation sitting on my shelf and might just read that this weekend now that I'm thinking about them again. I will say that I am unfortunately particularly fond of Taxian-jun/Chu Wanning specifically (surprising no one) but all versions are good.

3. Qiyan Agula/Nangong Jingnu. I really need to reread JWQS and it's because of these two cause like. what a mess! what a mess!!! it's enemies to lovers and betrayal and all that delicious crunchy shit and they're both women. how often do I get that, almost never. once I finally get around to learning book binding I feel like this might be the one I want to do first. 🤔

4. Sheng Lingyuan/Xuan Ji. It feels a little weird to put a pairing from a book I haven't finished yet on here (two, actually) but it's...really good so I'm going with it. I'm only ~70 chapters in and they've got me. The already emerging parallel themes of dehumanization and weaponization alone. Chef's kiss. perching here just waiting for the rest.

5 Xiao Chiye/Shen Zechuan. The other pairing from a book I haven't technically finished yet, but look, look, you've seen me posting their banter and I feel like for this alone:

Love and Redemption Rewatch: ep. 2

This rewatch could take a little longer than I expected with how time consuming it is, but here we go...

And so we get our first shred of the Mirror... which really should have been better hidden, if they ever hoped thing such as this not to happen.... The Secret Ground isn't all that secure.

From the start, Bai Lin is extremely determined that some things just Must Not Happen!

This whole "we are deciding Xuan Ji's punishment" situation shows very nicely the priorities and motivations of several characters. Ling Long shows up as soon as the whole berating starts, ready to intervene but biding her time. When the punishment is announced, Min Yan reacts immediately and pleads for leniency (on his knees and all). He doesn't think about it at all. I believe his main motivation is (as always) Ling Long, who, he knows, is extremely unhappy by this development and wants to protect her sister. Additionally, Xuan Ji is his friend and he wants to help her, but his main objective is to make Ling Long happy. Ling Long tries her classic crying act but is immediately silenced and quickly realizes that the situation is too dire to save her sister like this (still she tries one more trick - to appeal to aunt Hong - but this also fails). Xuan Ji doesn't fear the cave because she has no point of reference for pain or discomfort (beeing pampered her whole life) and is by far the most chill with the situation. But she also doesn't have any real regard for the rules of her sect and doesn't get the severity of her transgression. And that isn't because of her non-existent emotions, that is herself. She isn't concerned with rules or great ideals, she lives in the moment. Her biggest concern at the moment is Si Feng's wellbeing as she feels a connection with him. (Lets face it - Si Feng is guilty for trespassing in another sect's Secret Ground just because he needed to find his spiritual beast - Xuan Ji isn't protecting an innocent, she protects the boy she had connected with).

Chu Lei's speech to Yuan Lang has strong "who allowed you to go into my bedroom, the door were closed, bitch!" vibe.

So, this happened 16 years ago, approximately when Xuan Ji was born... but what about in her previous lifes, was the Jade Cup always sealed somewhere nearby? Did I just forget this detail?

Such a clever little misdirection and at the same time a hint...

And another clever misdirection: the show keeps showing us Yuan Lang during Xuan Ji's visions (and sometimes even Wu Zhi Qi) giving audience the impression that THIS is Star of Mosha thatwe are battling. My friend was even confused that there seemed to be more of them as the face and the mask keeps changing! Good job confusing the audience! :)

The "Ling Long tries to teach her sister how to cry" scene is very funny... and adorable... I love Ling Long.

The chilli powder plan is genius... :D In my country we use onion - works every time!

Si Feng is getting flogged as a punishment and the justification is that losing the mask puts everyone from Lize palace in danger... and this is probably not untrue...

Also, Si Feng stammers only in the presence of Xuan Ji.

Bai Lin is here for ten (largely uneventful) years already... he must miss his bed...

It's very sweet how sincerely Min Yan cares about Xuan Ji (even if it is a fertile ground for future misconceptions). Actually Xuan Ji is very loved by her sect brothers and sisters...

Is there some hidden meaning to the fact that taste has been the first sense to be recovered?

As expected, Ling Long's cooking is terrible. And as expected, Min Yan eats it all anyway, because she doesn't want her to be sad. I love these two, but Min Yan is the one who truly treasures his beloved person.

Min Yan's reaction to Ling Long's bitching is priceless...

... OR they want to save their own mask (and skin). One of those options. (Just saying. Si Feng isn't motivated by personal feelings just yet.)

Min Yan can be quite sneaky... and his plan actually worked! Good job, even worth Ling Long's slight disappointment.

And... he isn't stammering anymore, yep... That was quick - must have been the shock in the first place.

When you have the luxury of knowing, this is truly heartbreaking... I must look out for the first tears.

chu wanning: he'll feel an obligation to contribute, probably by investigating on his own. i don't think he'd want to work with anyone else, because he doesn't want them to get potentially hurt, but that motive probably would not come across well and instead he will most likely come off like a loner asshole, rip

My thoughts on this drama :

Xianxia is my thing. It is by far my favourite genre. And so, when I saw that one, I knew I had to watch it. And I liked it, a lot! I had watched Immortal Samsara just before, and needed a new dose of Cheng Yi, he's just THAT good.

I loved it, but the lead actress? I wanted to strangle her so much. That voice... damn it, that childish, whiny voice!!! I know it's not her fault (dubbing choice), but it ruined a lot of scenes for me. And by the end of the show, my ears were bleeding and the two words "Si Feng" were giving me goosebumps.

I think 40 episodes would however have been enough to tell this story. Chemistry-wise, the main couple was pretty insane. Not the best I've seen, but they gave their all, that's for sure.
