I saw your appreciation post for Jews who change their names to make them pronounceable for goyim, and I was wondering if you have any advice for how to correctly pronounce Hebrew names for people who aren’t used to them?

I guess the first place I would start is the vowels. Hebrew doesn't have all the vowels that English has, and has some that English doesn't. The pronunciation varies by region, but a general Ashkenazi style follows:

Patach (common English transliteration: ah) (IPA: ä)

Kamatz (common English transliteration: uh or o) (IPA: ɔ)

Chirik (common English transliteration: ee) (IPA: i)

Segol (common English transliteration: eh) (IPA: ɛ)

Shva (common English transliteration: ih) (IPA: ɪ)

Tzere (common English transliteration: ey) (IPA: eɪ)

Shuruk (common English transliteration: oo) (IPA: u)

Cholam (common English transliteration: oh) (IPA: oʊ)

(there are more vowels but we don't need to get into them rn)

The other thing is that each vowel is pronounced individually (the only diphthongs are eye (IPA: aɪ) and ooy (IPA: uɪ), but the second is not used commonly in names). So Eliezer is eh-lee-eh-zehr, not eh-lie-zur. Occasionally names will have an apostrophe to separate vowels to make this easier, like Ya'akov (yah-ah-kohv) or Me'ira (meh-ee-rah).

Hebrew also has some consonants that can be hard for goyim, most notably tzaddi and khaf/khet. Tzaddi makes a ts sound like at the end of quartz, but will often come at the beginning of a name like Tzipporah (tzih-poh-rah, not tizz-pour-uh). Khet and khaf make the sound ch as in loch (they're technically two different sounds but I don't want to complicate things). Think of the sound you make when you have a hair stuck in your throat and you're close. I believe the proper way to write this sound in English is kh, but it's usually written ch in names. So Chaim is khah-yim, not chaym or haym, and Yechezkel is yeh-khez-kel, not ye-chez-kul. If you can't make the sound substituting it with an aspirate (the h sound) is okay.

And that should be enough for a basic run-down. I don't want to get too deep in the weeds and if you do want to actually learn Hebrew there are much better resources. But there ya go

Qui sont les "tafioles de merde" ? - Une certaine conception du débat public

Ils le font le signent et se le mettent de le cul profond. Cette bande de tafioles de merde.

Qui sont ces "tafioles de merde" ? Et qu'ont-elles fait pour se faire traiter ainsi ?

Il y a la question de l'insulte, de la grossièreté et de l'homophobie.

Mais j'aimerais aussi vous faire réfléchir à la conception du débat public qu'il y a derrière cette anecdote.

Reprenons depuis le début.

Nous apprenons donc que "Complément d'enquête" consacre leur prochaine émission à Sophia Chikirou, actuellement députée pour La France Insoumise, et qui avait dirigé "Le Média" une webTV proche de son parti.

En 2018, des journalistes de Le Média avaient voulu publier un mea culpa suite à l'affaire du blessé de Tolbiac, une histoire de violences policières diffusée par la webTV qui s'était avérée être 100% bidon.

Et l'on apprend donc que celle qui était directrice avait réagit à l'époque en qualifiant ces journalistes (ses subalternes donc) de "bande de tafioles de merde".

Ce qui suscite certaines remous.

J'ai vu passer sur l'ex-Oiseau Bleu ce magnifique tweet d'un élu du même parti que Sophia Chirikou, dont je vous laisse apprécier la pertinence (précision : j'ironise).

Donc, bien-sûr qu'il y a de l'homophobie là-derrière. Même si ça ne visait pas spécifiquement des personnes LGBT.

Et en fait, surtout parce que ça ne vise pas des personnes LGBT.

Parce qu'ici, le mot "tafioles" sert à qualifier les personnes visées de faibles, de lâches, de veules, de nuls. L'assimilation à des personnes LGBT est ici utilisée pour dénigrer, rabaisser des gens. La question a été parfois traitée dans des médias, et je ne vais pas développer ici.

Sophie Chikirou regrette peut-être ses paroles tenues il y a 5 ans. Peut-être même qu'elle s'en est excusée depuis. Je ne sais pas. Par contre les arguments utilisés par certains pour la défendre aujourd'hui, là, c'est assez difficile à excuser.

Je vous renvoie au tweet cité plus haut, impressionnant de mauvaise foi.

Et je ne peux pas ne pas vous montrer aussi ce tweet-ci, de J-L Mélenchon, qui cite S Chikirou parmi d'autres femmes connues et engagées en politiques :

Pour trop de journalistes, les femmes engagées sont toujours des sorcières, des marionnettes ou des manipulatrices.

Ah...

Sûr.

C'est parce que c'est une femme.

C'est juste une attaque masculiniste.

Circulez, y'a rien à voir.

L'idée que certaines personnes devraient peut-être parfois se remettre en cause et songer à s'excuser, c'est inenvisageable.

Je précise qu'il n'y a pas que cette histoire de messages insultants qui pose problème ici. Et de loin pas.

Mais je voulais vous parler d'une certaine conception du débat public.

Revenons au départ. Qu'ont fait les journalistes visés pour s'attirer ainsi les foudres de leur directrice et se faire qualifier de "tafioles de merde" ?

Des journalistes ont voulu publier un mea culpa. Parce le média pour lequel ils travaillaient avait totalement merdé, avec un faux scoop.

J'avais consacré un article de blog à cette histoire. Et à ce que ça nous disait d'un certain rapport à la vérité. Et par là, ce que ça implique sur le débat public.

Le Média avait fini par rétropédaler. Enfin. Pas trop quand-même. Pour dire qu'ils avaient quand-même bien fait.

Vous voyez ce que je veux dire ? On a un gros scoop. Publié par une web TV qui se présente comme une alternative aux gros médias mainstream. Gros scoop qui ne colle pas avec les infos que recueillent les journalistes qui enquêtent sérieusement. Au point que ça devient évident : tout était bidon.

Et on a certains journalistes qui semblent avoir un problème avec leur déontologie, qui se disent qu'ils ont merdé et qu'ils faut de vraies excuses.

Et cette idée de s'excuser, vraiment, de faire un vrai mea culpa, c'est assimilé à une marque de faiblesse. Et ces journalistes se font traiter de "tafioles de merde" pour ça.

Parce que, oui, pour certains, et pour certaines, s'excuser lorsqu'on a publiquement dit une grosse connerie, c'est de la faiblesse, de la lâcheté, de la veulerie, de la nullité.

Il n'y aurait pas de place pour ça dans le débat public.

Reconnaître qu'on a merdé, ce serait un truc de tafioles.

Remarque :

L'auteur de ces lignes a lui aussi dans sa vie utilisé des termes de ce genre en tant qu'insulte. Oui, il m'est arrivé de m'exclamer "mais quel enculé celui-là" pour dire qu'un gars me semblait détestable. Ou de dire "ça c'est pas pour les tafioles" en décrivant un tord-boyaux artisanal qui brûlait le gosier.

Ouais.

Je dois l'avouer. J'en suis pas fier.

Je me permets d'implorer votre indulgence, en précisant que c'était il y a longtemps et que j'étais jeune.

Et j'ai de la peine à comparer des paroles prononcées par un ado ou un jeune adulte au siècle passé, avec un message écrit par une directrice d'un média, une personnalité publique affichant des valeurs bien à gauche, une professionnelle de la communication, parlant de certains de ses subalternes, dans un cadre professionnel, en 2018.

Magic

Magic is a strange, peculiar force. Not everyone can harness it, and certain races have a stronger affinity for certain magic types, or even magic as a whole.

Magic is generally contained to the 6 elements of the world. Earth, Ocean, Sky, Tectonic, Life and Death. Each of those magic types is used in certain ways, and has it’s own rules.

Earth magic is strong, stubborn and difficult to control. Young Earth magic users are especially prone to injury, as they haven’t yet learnt how to work with the stubbornness. This magic focuses on earthly materials such as dirt, rocks, metals and ores. Earth magic is typically used in herbalism, smelting and mining. Excellent Earth mages can detect precious metals and minerals that would otherwise have gone overlooked. Norfolk are very adept at this magic, and Aevery are the worst.

Ocean magic is flowing. This is the easiest to control, and is often underestimated, considered a beginner’s element. However, masterful Ocean mages could make the strongest of any element quake in their boots. This magic focuses on anything water-related. From puddles and rain to massive icebergs. This magic, when combined with Life magic, is great for healing. Merfolk are the best at this.

Sky magic is graceful and ethereal. This is the magic of the air and wind. Combined with Ocean magic, it can create thunderous tempests and storms. Sky magic requires a lot of concentration to learn, and many give up along the way, but once learnt it can be mastered in months, even weeks. This magic is favoured by performers, who use it to their advantage. Chirichs and Aevery are the best at this, with Dragons coming in close. It is very rare for a Norfolk or Merfolk to learn this magic at all, let alone be much good at it.

Tectonic is the magic of fire and lava and spewing volcanoes. While not difficult to learn, even a seasoned master can have trouble controlling it’s unpredictable nature. This magic is at it’s strongest when combined with Earth magic, and the two complement each other well. Dragons are the masters of this, far above any others.

Life magic is that of the plants, the animals, and all that breathes and lives. This magic is rare but highly revered for it’s healing ability. Life mages are often dragged into wars, healing the injured for little in return. More frequently Life mages help in famine and poverty, helping entire farms return from the brink of death. Unlike the four major elements Life (and Death) magic is not learnt, but one is born with it. And unlike the elemental magic, every race has an equal affinity and chance to be born with it.

Death magic is the rarest, and has a nasty reputation. It is the magic of decay, illness, poison and death. This is the magic most desired by cults and assassins for various nefarious means. However, being born with Death magic is not a sentence to a life of evil. Death magic is just as useful as Life magic in healing. Life mages can only heal what they know is there. Death mages have the unique ability to detect hidden illnesses, cancers and other secret ailments before their symptoms reveal themselves. For many, this is what saves them. Most folk are only likely to ever meet a Death mage a few times in their life, and usually only in hospitals and care centers.

There is a game for little kids: "chik-chirik I'm inside the house". Saying this, children cover their heads with hands folded in the shape of a roof. This is a universal defensive gesture in this game, which protects against any disaster.

But will this child's gesture protect from the maniac with an ax? Children believe that yes, but we know, that there is no chance...

In front and behind the Drama Theater in Mariupol, someone wrote in capital letters the word "CHILDREN" in the language of the occupier. Folding arms in the shape of a roof over a head. They had a strong belief in the magic of this gesture, in the magic of the word "children". After all, during the war you have to hold on to something. Why not hold on to the imaginary humanity of the occupier?

The word "Children" became the target of an air strike. Russia is terrorizing Ukrainian people to force Ukraine to lose its subjectivity. Because for us the value of human life is paramount. That is why their method is to kill children to achieve imperial goals.

Remember, these deaths of civilians, of children have no other purpose - just to restore the USSR, with no Ukraine as a sovereign country. Children's blood is in the hands of the russians because they want to reanimate the monster of the past - Soviet Union.

1500 people were in that shelter inside the Drama theatre.

Researchers advance new route to chemically recyclable plastics

As the planet's burden of rubber and plastic trash rises unabated, scientists increasingly look to the promise of closed-loop recycling to reduce waste. A team of researchers at Princeton's Department of Chemistry announces the discovery of a new polybutadiene molecule—from a material known for over a century and used to make common products like tires and shoes—that could one day advance this goal through depolymerization.

The Chirik lab reports in Nature Chemistry that during polymerization the molecule, named (1,n'-divinyl)oligocyclobutane, enchains in a repeating sequence of squares, a previously unrealized microstructure that enables the process to go backwards, or depolymerize, under certain conditions.

In other words, the butadiene can be "zipped up" to make a new polymer; that polymer can then be unzipped back to a pristine monomer to be re-used.

The research is still at an early stage and the material's performance attributes have yet to be thoroughly explored. But the Chirik lab has provided a conceptual precedent for a chemical transformation not generally thought practical for certain commodity materials.
