US ban on TikTok “not fair” – China’s Foreign Ministry

A Chinese foreign ministry official criticised a US bill to force the sale or ban TikTok, arguing on Thursday that there was “no fairness to speak of” in citing national security to reduce other countries’ competitive advantage.

A bill passed overwhelmingly by the US House of Representatives on Wednesday would give Chinese TikTok owner, ByteDance, around six months to sell the app’s US assets or face a ban.

Wang Wenbin, a ministry spokesman, responded to the US move as follows:

“The US House of Representatives passing this bill lets the United States stand on the opposite side of the principles of fair competition and international trade rules. If so-called national security reasons can be used to wilfully suppress other countries’ superior companies, there would be no fairness to speak of.”

China persistently argued that the US was overemphasising the concept of national security, with Wang saying its actions were disrupting the normal international trade order and would eventually have unpleasant consequences.

The US increasing the (serious) handling of this matter lets the world see clearly whether the United States’ so-called rules-based competition is beneficial to the world or is only self-serving.

Ya there was a big wave of pan african sentiment in the 90's big push happening, Spike Lee movies were playing a part in that, specifically Malcolm X, as well as musical acts like The Fugees, Lauren Hill of The Fugees, DeLa Soul, Tribe Called Quest, many others who's names slip my mind, as opposed to now most of that that I can recall was about embracing yourself and your history but not a lot of anger towards others, well the Malcolm X movie got some angries but for the most part.....

I have to wonder who the world would hate for being self centered and arrogant about everything if it weren't for the US, honestly though not a 'oh it'd be France or the UK' thing, who has the cultural and economic clout to manage that level of arrogance, probably China.

UK was the first major world power to outlaw slavery and they use the PaxBritanica to try to enforce it globally, at least on the seas since they were the world police before the US got the job post WW1, they sank their economy into the toilet to purchase the freedom of a whole lot of people in the process too.

Reparations were paid when the equivalent of billions of pounds to purchase the freedom for those people, didn't finish paying it off till like 2015, then they incurred even more expenses to stop more people from being sold, meanwhile certain African kingdoms were raking in the cash selling people.

Be why the 'my brother in Christ we already paid you for them' line when some African countries started in on the reparations train was so funny.

There are general elections happening in my country(Brasil) and one of the candidates suggested building an algorithm to predict crimes and stop them from happening and I was just like "Where have I seen that?" And then I remembered where I have seen that and I was like "Oh shit".

I have to say one of the main reasons CATWS really resonated with me (before I ever shipped Stucky or even liked Steve and Bucky much) was that particular theme.

The Chinese communist party has been trying to do this for years. Surveillance of citizens is baked into the party’s DNA from the Cultural Revolution in the 60s, where people were encouraged to monitor each other’s behaviours and report on anything “anti-revolutionary”. Unsurprisingly it led to many spiteful private disagreements turning into public spectacles of humiliation, ostracisation and executions. But from a CCP point of view, the deaths were a small price for “security” and "stability" (oh gee…that’s sounds familiar).

Technology has made this easier in so many aspects. The tools are widespread and unexpected. For example, a lot of the Chinese apps I have on my phone will load data from other apps. A lot of them also demand your hand over your real identity. For example, the JJWXC app (which I haven’t used in a while) is simply for a site that hosts a lot of original fiction (a bit like AO3), including lots of danmei, but asks that you verify your account with a real phone number. It also does this strange thing where if I open it up, iPhone will give me a notification that the app has pasted something from another app I had recently open, usually Facebook or Safari or some other social media site, even when I have NOT copied anything to clipboard. Why would a site that for all intents and purpose function like (a heavily censored) AO3 do this? Or several of the other game apps? And it only happens for Chinese apps. I don't use Tik Tok, but there's been significant concerns about what that app is collecting in terms of user data.

Phone apps give the CCP tremendous amount of data about your location (and where you stop for longer periods of the day, which allows tech companies to accurately pinpoint where your home and work/school is), which users you interact more with, how frequently or freely (and where) you spend your cash, which allows them to rapidly profile your demographic and your preferences as well as your network of people who are important to you (READ: for blackmail or extortion). Depending on the app (e.g. if you use Weibo or Wechat) there's a high chance that specific word combinations will trigger a ban, and your chat history is probably going to be stored remotely for someone to comb through. Overseas Chinese speakers famously use a string of banned words to get rid of spammers social media apps, because as soon as "sensitive words" like "64" (referring to the June 4th massacres) or "Tibetan/Taiwan/HK independence", they get kicked off the internet by their servers.

But phone apps are only the tip of the iceberg. The CCP has set up an extensive CCTV network with the technology to collect facial recognition data (I get the sense a lot of countries are quietly setting this up though) that is able to profile people into age groups and races, as well as matching them to known criminals...which might sound like a useful thing until you remember that you can very much be a political criminal by simply not agreeing with the CCP.

There's been plenty of cases where Chinese diaspora's families inside China get detained by the police for them being vocal on the international front about human rights or other political issues going on inside China. A Chinese person with a strong moral principle would not be shut down by threats to their lives, but a Chinese person whose elderly parents or vulnerable nieces and nephews are threatened may not be able to stand up against the thousands of years of filial duty and say they're still willing to step out there in the public, at the risk of damaging their family's careers or even lives.

So yes...when I say CATWS was probably the bravest the MCU has ever been...this is what I'm referring to. But the CCP wouldn't be the only government pouring resources into something like this.

My Thoughts On Former Twitter Employee Getting Sentenced To 3 Years In Prison By The Biden Administration For Spying For Saudi Arabia : an article by Alfred

A former twitter employee sentenced to 3 years for spying is very funny to me.

Remember when believing and saying that social media companies is the government spying on us led to you being labeled a conspiracy theorist. You were called an Alex Jones.

Yet, here we see governments accusing apps & tech not made in their country of spying on its people and arresting their employees.

Funny enough there are those who would always not want to see the serious problem and security risk that this phenomen poses.

It has gone beyond a security risk at this point.

America & China has more details and better records of the citizens of almost every other country in the world than their own governments do.

Russia is kinda far behind put it is tagging along in this new game of spying on other nations.

Using apps and smart phones to spy on people is not the future of intelligence gathering for intelligence agencies. It is the here and has and been this way for along time.

Note that nations are in completion with nations. War aside even on a financial side; every nation wants to outdo the other nations economy so they can be number one.

Imagine owning a company and trying to outdo another company that has access to all your records, data, employees data, etc. How can you win?

Imagine being a country going to war with a country that has been studying every single citizen in your country and has every little detail about them from their fingerprint or facial recognition for smartphone logins to what time they went to bed for the past ten years to their heart beat activity thanks to their smart watch or exercise app.

How can you go to war or compete with a company that has that kind of information on your citizens and expect to win? You can't.

Trump banned Til Tok saying that the Chinese was using it to spy on Americans.

Well America uses Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc to spy on the rest of the world.

A lot of Americans were against Trump banning Tik Tok and Biden unbanned it as soon as he got into office. However now he has banned Tik Tok on all government devices which means that he knows that there is something wrong with Tik Tok. He knows Tik Tok is spying on people and even recording every keystroke made on any device that has Tik Tok installed.

However because of democrat party politics and the fact that democrats condemned Trump for banning Tik Tok, Biden doesn't want to ban Tik Tok but allow Americans use what he knows is bad for America.

Sad!

Africa however gets exploited by everybody and their information is open game for the so called developed world.

SOLUTION:

- Countries need to build their own apps

- App source code from foreign countries should not only be open source but apps should be able to be deconstructed in devices and broken down into code so people can look and see if it has some compromising code or bug within an update to slip through the cracks (a technology that does not yet exist for mobile phones).

Thinking about consumerism, for me, tik tok has been more and more a stimulator of that. Their users are everytime bombarded with trends like bulkhall or products that you can’t live without, being invited to buy some things that you wouldn't buy if you haven’t seen. We have some trends that consist of buying things just by the memes about funny, useless, and very cheap things that we can buy mainly from China. But not only that. Videos showing clothes, makeup, shoes, school supplies, and many other things, from varieated stores, are very popular too. Many times these videos are made by creators promoted by brands or stores. Tik tok has become an important tool of publicity, and it has been made using famous influencers to promote their products. So I guess many people are influenced to make videos showing their purchases or making reviews not only because this type of content is very attractive and popular, but hoping one day being paid by some brand. It occurred on many other social medias, but on tik tok everything we see is very fast and intensive, the videos are very short, so we consume a larger quantity of content in less time than on youtube, for example. I don’t judge who produces these videos following these trends or even being paid to do this. But I guess these type of content are problematic by many factors, mainly because we don’t need a society more consumerist than it already is. The excess of consumption generates a lot of trash, because many of things that are easily discarded, the most part aren’t recycled, and even if it were, the pollution occurs since the production and transport. I believe people should be a little bit more conscious not only about what we consume, but also about the kind of thing that we encourage on the internet. But we know the big brands and stores will not care about these questions, because have people buying a lot of their products is good for them.
