Lester Bowie (October 11, 1941 – November 8, 1999) was a jazz trumpet player and composer. He was a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and co-founded the Art Ensemble of Chicago. At the age of five, he started studying the trumpet with his father, a professional musician. He played with blues musicians such as Little Milton and Albert King, and rhythm and blues stars such as Solomon Burke, Joe Tex, and Rufus Thomas. He became Fontella Bass's musical director and husband. He was a co-founder of the Black Artists Group in St Louis. He moved to Chicago, where he worked as a studio musician, met Muhal Richard Abrams and Roscoe Mitchell, and became a member of the AACM. In 1968, he founded the Art Ensemble of Chicago with Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, and Malachi Favors. He remained a member of this group for the rest of his life and was also a member of Jack DeJohnette's New Directions quartet. He lived and worked in Jamaica and Africa, and played and recorded with Fela Kuti. onstage appearance, in a white lab coat, with his goatee waxed into two points, was an important part of the Art Ensemble's stage show. He formed Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, a brass nonet in which he demonstrated jazz's links to other forms of popular music, a decidedly more populist approach than that of the Art Ensemble. With this group, he recorded songs previously associated with Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and Marilyn Manson, along with other material. His New York Organ Ensemble featured James Carter and Amina Claudine Myers. He was part of the jazz supergroup The Leaders. Featuring tenor saxophonist Chico Freeman, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe, drummer Famoudou Don Moye, pianist Kirk Lightsey, and bassist Cecil McBee. ON THE ALL-STAR JAZZ BAND

COUCH TOUR: THE HEAVY HITTERS (Mike LeDonne, Eric Alexander, Jeremy Pelt, Jim Snidero, Alexander Claffy, and Kenny Washington!), SMOKE JAZZ CLUB, 19 AUGUST 2022, 2nd Set

Let’s start with The Greatest Jazz Concert Ever by THE Quintet (Charlie Parker, his worthy constituent Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach) at Toronto’s Massey Hall in 1953. Quite a band with plenty of overlaps in NYC clubs and recordings, but pulled together for the occasion with a quintessential bebop set that makes a good stab at living up to its name.

But jazz, with its standard book and sessions, seems so well suited to the format that you could say that the Verve, Prestige, and especially Blue Note albums of the 1950s and 1960s were all-star bands—Dexter Gordon and Freddie Hubbard with Butch Warren and Billy Higgins on Takin’ Off where, arguably the leader, Herbie Hancock, was the only non-all star even if he brought in tunes like Watermelon Man and Alone and I. But those albums had leaders who brought in the tunes even if Rudy Van Gelder, Alfred Lion, and Norman Granz helped figure out who was on the session.

No, I think what I’m discussion here is the deliberately formed band, that whatever leadership structure, is designed to put and, as importantly, keep a core of players working together.

In the 1980s, a more avant-garde group of players including Chico Freeman, Don Cherry then Lester Bowie, Arthur Blythe, Don Pullen to Hector Ruiz to Kirk Lightsey, Cecil McBee, and Don Moye then Billy Hart were The Leaders. They were during my hiatus so I don’t know their albums. Then McBee and Hart are in the occasionally still active The Cookers with Eddie Henderson, Billy Harper, George Cables and the organizer David Weiss. I’ve like their recordings but I can’t say they are more than the sum of their parts.

Let’s see if Artemis can bounce back after lockdown, but their parts—Renee Rosnes, Allison Miller, Anat Cohen, Ingrid Jensen, Nicole Glover replacing Melissa Aldana, and Noriko Ueda—are formidable. Their album and Jazz St Louis show were appealing, but I’m happy to see Anat Cohen and Allison Miller’s Boom Tic Boom this coming season. I don’t miss Aldana or Glover when they show up on the streams. But are they or any of these ensembles a team or just all-stars?

I’d spent the week listening to lots of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, so sextets and retrospective all-stars. But those were his bands with 35 years of consistent vision even as the music directors shifted from Benny Golson to Wayne Shorter to Wynton Marsalis and beyond.

Comes now The Heavy Hitters, with Mike LeDonne and Eric Alexander as leaders, as a recent addition to the format. These musicians are solid regulars I know from Small’s Live. Kenny Washington is the out and out all-star among them, but seeing him with horns is a treat. Indeed, such ensembles, often sextets, are an identifying feature of the format as clubs, on a night to night basis are trios or one horn and rhythm section with the occasional quintet. Jeremy Pelt is probably next in this pantheon for some very tasty trumpet work, but I also tend to underrate and undervalue the bench of trumpet players. I’ve liked Alexander of late for a nice middle tone and linear solos and Alexander Claffy is a welcome name on any gig for his reliability. It is LeDonne who is sometimes heavy handed, but not here. Indeed he steps out here with the bulk of the tunes and some solid not overly fussy soloing. Pelt was his reliable self with fine tone and thoughtful solo work. The most appealing horn was Jim Snidero’s alto and he’s the one who isn’t quite the streaming regular. But again the treat was to hear Kenny Washington have a horn section to whip into shape with his taste, elegance, and velvet glove power.

I thought I would get a Small’s Archive show from 2018 from the Black Art Jazz Collective but instead I found a 2017 gig on YouTube from Dizzy’s in Lincoln Center. The Small’s gig rhythm section was Victor Gould whom I’d heard in a recent trio gig, Rashaan Carter, and Johnathan Blake who would have been fun to hear with horns after lots of trio work. Instead, the Wayne Escoffery, Jeremy Pelt, and James Burton III frontline had Xavier Davis, Vincente Archer, and Darrell Green backing them up. Everybody got some space, but yes with six pieces the rhythm section made their marks with strong accompaniment. And they did. Archer is surprisingly forceful behind his thick spectacles and Darrell Green is solid. I did not know Xavier Davis but he shone in his couple of solos but even more in some very sympathetic fills and comping. I catch Escoffery often and he is, as he was here, solid and rich, but as the tenor player he wailed a bit. It was Pelt who was consistently tasteful, though he could growl. Burton was rich and patient in his soloing. The tunes were originals but thematically about the Black experience and so evoked WEB DuBois and Sojourner Truth as well as the plaint When Will We Learn.

BAJC, like Artemis and all of these ensembles, may be an occasional ensemble. I won’t wait for either of them or the Cookers or the Heavy Hitters to hear their members when they go out on their own gigs. But the all-star band has the advantage of, well, having all-stars.

Casi década y media después analizó sobre los nuevos talentos: "Estos chicos llegan ahora con 20, 21 años y ya son superestrellas. Es increíble ver a Elly de La Cruz, o a Ronald (Acuña, Jr.) cuando debutó. Corbin Carroll, quiero decir, ¿cómo? Simplemente me desconcierta. Parece como si estuvieran listos para el estrellato mucho antes. Hay un gran cambio", añadió en declaraciones tomadas de The Ahtletic. Los jugadores jóvenes están remodelando el juego. La proliferación de jóvenes jugadores de impacto es el resultado de una confluencia de acontecimientos: La explosión de datos de vanguardia y métodos de entrenamiento, junto con un cambio de mentalidad entre muchas oficinas delanteras sobre el desarrollo de jugadores de las Mayores; el Acuerdo de Negociación Colectiva de 2022, que desincentiva la manipulación del tiempo de servicio además de la era de tanking y reconstrucción, que significa usar jugadores más jóvenes, más baratos. Por otra parte, cuando los Piratas de Pittsburgh sopesaban si el infielder Ke'Bryan Hayes entraría en su róster de arranque,

el gerente general, Ben Cherington, dijo que parte de la discusión sobre el jugador, que debutó con 23 años durante la temporada 2020, era que necesitaba estar enel Big Show para acelerar su crecimiento. Siempre hay un periodo de adaptación, por mucho talento que tenga un jugador. El nuevo sistema, que forma parte del acuerdo laboral establecido en 2022, recompensa ahora a los equipos con selecciones extra del draft si promocionan a sus mejores promesas en el Día Inaugural. Un jugador que reciba un año completo de tiempo de servicio y termine entre los 3 primeros en la votación de Novato del Año o entre los 5 primeros en la votación de MVP/Cy Young ganará para su equipo una elección extra en el draft después de la primera ronda. Otra variable de la ecuación es la mejora de las condiciones de las Ligas Menores, que fue una estipulación cuando MLB redujo el número de equipos en las granjas y se vio reforzada cuando los jugadores ligaminoristas se sindicaron, significa que incluso los chicos que no juegan en los mejores programas universitarios tienen acceso a más recursos que sus predecesores. Por último, en la era de la agencia libre, los equipos sólo disponen de un tiempo limitado para ganar con sus jugadores jóvenes. Si los chicos no van a permanecer en un elenco toda su carrera, ¿por qué no traerlos aquí y maximizar lo que tienen ahora, antes de que llegue la próxima oleada de jugadores jóvenes? Como vemos, el tema es bastante amplio, se pude abordar desde distintas perspectivas y en lo que respecta a esta primavera podríamos ver debutar en las Mayores al sensacional prospecto venezolano Jackson Chourio, quien antes de poner un pie en el máximo nivel recibió una extensión en su contrato por parte de los Cerveceros de Milwaukee, 80 millones de dólares por los siguientes 8 años, algo sin precedentes. Y no solo está él, por ahí vienen Jackson Holliday de los Orioles, Paul Skenes, de los Piratas, temporadas completas de los jóvenes Evan Carter en Rangers de Texas y Junior Caminero con Rays de Tampa Bay. La espera para ver a los mejores talentos jóvenes del beisbol ya no es tan larga como antes. Cine: Adam (2019)

La familia de Adam Freeman (Nicholas Alexander) cree que su hija mayor Casey (Margaret Qualley), que está afincada en Nueva York, está muy enamorada de su novio Mark, pero ésta es una fachada para ocultar que no siente ninguna atracción por los chicos, algo que su hermano ya sabía. Casey le a pasar el verano junto a ella y a sus compañeros de piso. Aventura en la que un mundo desconocido se abrirá ante él: el de la militancia y la vida nocturna LGBTQ.

Allí se encuentra con Gillian (Bobbi Menues), una bellísima chica lesbiana que acababa de separarse y encuentra en Adam a alguien divertido, ideal para iniciar una relación exitosa. Lo que le fascina es la idea de que el muchacho es transexual, por lo que está convencida de que le ofrecerá una experiencia que nunca antes había vivido. Ella terminará dándosela a Adam, que llega a investigar experiencias de chicos trans narradas en Internet para alimentar la confusión.

Lo queer pulula detrás y delante de la pantalla merced a la dirección de Rhys Erest, la autoría (del libro y del guión) de Ariel Schrag y un espectro que se completa en la actuación de Leo Sheng (Ethan, el nuevo amigo de Adam), Chloe Levine (June), Jari Jones (Schuyler), Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (Emma), Ana Gasteyer (la madre de Adam), Colton Ryan (Brad, al amigo del instituto de Adam), Dana Aliya Levinson (Hazel, ex novia de Casey Freeman), Alisha B. Woods (Jackie) y Rachel Burkhardt (Nadia). Un nombre destacable es el de James Schamus, productor del filme y de otras joyas como "Bareback Mountain" (2005), "El tigre y el dragón" (2000) o "Hulk" (2003). Además de lo que implica la estratagema de Adam, el filme presenta una mirada más íntima sobre el activismo moderno entre las nuevas generaciones, con sus luces y sombras, necesario.

Le prochain projet de DeJohnette, un groupe appelé "Special Edition", a été un succès incroyable

Ainsi, le premier album du groupe, sorti sous le même nom, a été nommé par le magazine 'Down Beat' 'Album de l'année'. Parmi les musiciens qui ont joué dans l'édition spéciale, il y avait David Murray (David Murray), Arthur Blythe (Arthur Blythe), Chico Freeman (Chico Freeman) et d'autres.

À partir de 1983, DeJohnette faisait partie du trio de son ancien coéquipier de Davis, Keith Jarrett.

period has my stomach monumentally fucked up #suffering took ibuprofen though so maybe it will help (??????!) i stayed the night at my grandpa’s and we watched a nova documentary then a morgan freeman narrated one on netflix and shared apple pie from miracle mile. then um yes we went ti sleep he chose couch i got the bed bc he’s not ready to sleep in the bed yet bc of my gramma. then this morning he made a tomato zucchini green onion omelette which we split in half and also split a slice of sourdough toasted with butter. we ate at eight! we ran some errands and i got a car wash and vacuum. woke up with my period. my mom and siblings came around 12 and cooked pancakes and made blueberry coulis to go with them. he asked for help going through my grammas stuff bc he isnt ready yet so i did and took a sleep shirt and chicos sweater and a silver bangle. she also had earrings i tookbut she didnt have ear piercings soi guess she got them for fun. i found a journal of hers and theres only 3 entries dated from 2006 and one of them is her writing about me as a toddler. it is horribly hot today 98 degrees sos!!! gonna collage with my bf and then swim and hopefully shower stretch breathe write and sleep. i may stay at grampa again tonight bc otherwise he will be alone
