Tokyo Day 2
I sweat, I did not forget about this blog. I have another solely for family and filling in that took a lot of time, apart from studying and doing everything else lol.
Anyway, let’s resume with my first travel before I arrived at school!
On my second day in Tokyo I didn’t meet any friend but ventured by myself. In the morning, after breakfast, I headed to Rikugien, a garden in northern Tokyo.
It was a nice day, sunshine and a few clouds. The garden itself was lovely, the cherry clossoms were still visible and the hidden paths were nice to explore.
After that I headed to Akihabara, to re-visit Kanda Myoujin, a shrine. Like the last time I’ve been there, the weather was crisp and clear, the cherry trees were blooming and the red of the shrine was marvellous. I think the shrine got even more popular, because there were lots of tourists. A lot more than expected. (Although, I did come from a garden that is not right in the very centre, so I guess that’s why? *shrugs*)
Once done, I felt my knee getting even worse. (Remember? Me climbing a mountain? Yeah... not good.) I took escalators and elevators whenever I could. Walking down stairs in the subway was already impossible.
I somehow managed to find my way to Asakusa, were I wanted to visit the smaller Asakusa Shrine! In Sensoji, there were... many people. Like, MANY people. It was hot and sticky and just annoying. I couldn’t walk well too, so after a while I walked along the side-paths, but there were also people. I somehow got to Asakusa Shrine in the end. Do not recommend, really.
Once I paid my visit to the gods and got a new Omamori, I walked towards the river and through the Sumida ward. It suddenly got very quiet once I left the premises of Sensoji, finally.
The river side was lovely, many cherry trees lined up along the water and many took the chance to sit there and have lunch. Me too, btw.
I watched the Sky Tree from the distance while eating (and evading the seats were all those seagulls and pigeons were lurking).
After lunch, I walked to the Sky Tree. My main aim was to go to the Jump Shop (for haikyuu!! merch), but ended up exploring some other shops. I also didn’t end up getting anything haikyuu related, but bought a sticker sheet from a science shop!
On my way back to the hotel, I stopped at Ginza, visited Itoya, a store with more than 8 stories specialised on stationary (I really recommend that! It has a lot, like: a LOT, and very lovely things), and went to the Kabuki theater while I was already in GInza.
Then I had some time left and thought to go to Ueno and the Tokugawa Shrine. Yet, once I went out and walked towards the Ueno Park, it became clear that I wouldn’t get far. My knee was about to collapse.
I walked back to the station and took a break in a konbini, where I found some stickers from the suica penguin!
Finally in the hotel, I rested my knee.

Microhistory
My Micro-history is based on the place, Puhoi, This is a small town in Northern Auckland where I spent most of my life. This place holds a lot of fond memories and emotions for me. I Have tied my little farm in Puhoi to the township with the connection of the river which runs through them both. When I was growing up i thought of this farm as an adventurous fantasy wonderland, and the town was always a quaint town that gave a strong sense of culture and community, this is what i have tried to portray through this series of images. I think this series of images represents small hidden wonders and beautiful things. Throughout the image taking process of the past few weeks I experimented with a couple different cameras, including my phone (used for walk in the neighbourhood exercise), a sony a100 which was about 15 years old (used for the township photos: cherry clossoms - church) and a Canon EOS 800D which is about 3 years old (farm photos).
In the first couple images I played around with focus and shutter speed mostly, trying to capture to flow of the water and then others where the focus was on the branches in the foreground. I liked how the water was reflecting the light from above. The picture of the Fence Posts was taken at golden hour and was warm toned, this post was significant to me as we did a lot of target shooting practice living on the farm, I shot my first can off of this post. The image of the greenhouse i have used to reflect the image coming later on of the church, trying to replicate the same structure of the building. My farm cat helped to tie in the idea of exploring and adventure, i think with the nature background and her green eyes it ties in well with these first couple images. The picture of the garage was also taken at golden hour, this has a now dead passion fruit vine off of it, we used to pick them with my mum and put them at the end of the driveway in a basket for anyone driving by to come and take when we’d grow too many, same with the vegetables from the now deserted green house.
The cherry blossom and river images are to tie the place of the township together with my farm, with this first photo i was focusing on the blossoms hanging down with the river in the background, whilst taking this photo i found part of a broken beehive. I wanted to include this photo because i loved the textures that it brought and how the light would shine through the thinner parts of the structure. The Puhoi Town library is one of the smallest in New Zealand and survived two great floods, it was commonly seen with its little chimney pumping firewood in winter with a lovely lady always around, people form the community would donate books to the library after the floods because of the damage. I thought this church was a good representation of the quaint community that we have in Puhoi. The general store image was one of the only 5 buildings in the town, our family would come here for fish and chips as kids and the adults would sneak off to the pub next door which was always filled with people and their Harleys as it was a common stop for motorcyclists travelling up north.  The Trading post shows a lot of the culture we have around the area, i was trying to capture the flag to the left blowing gently in the wind. The Church Images I was working a lot with light, it became quite bright as i took these so the clouds kept moving and the lighting kept changing, i was taking photos of the white parts of the building to begin with to test the white balance and lighting before taking this picture. This church has a strong sense of community and also reminds me of one of my favourite childhood movies “Bridge to Terabithia” which was filmed at This church and the surrounding forrest. The stained glass photo, i wasn't intentionally trying to black out the area around it, it was a test shot that turned into a happy accident photo which i really liked because it brought in the sunlight from outside and made the colours of the stained glass window very vibrant.
Over all my biggest hurdles was understanding what settings were best for the type of image I was trying to take and battling the constantly changing weather that kept moving from sunny to cloudy to rain and back to sunny again all within minutes of each other which impacted the outcome of many of my images due to the constant changes in lighting. My work was mostly inspired by Frans Lanting who created very bright and colourful nature images.

"My! My! What beautiful blossoms we have this year. But look, this one's late. But I'll bet, when it blooms, it will be the most beautiful of all." -Fa Zhou to Fa Mulan _______________________________________ There's a variety of cherry clossoms that grow in most asian countries. There's white, pink, 5-petaled 20-petaled, among others... depends on what's endemic in the area. (That's why in my recent portrait the cherry blossoms were pink while this one's white... also, it was taken in seoul while this shot is in the southern part of korea) At that time, there weren't a lot of cherry blossoms in bloom in the Southern area as it was already approaching summer. However my sister told me that if I travel north, it will gradually get even cooler so there are still some cherry blossoms in bloom until they too eould gradually cease to do so come summer and the rise of temperature. This info might help if you really are keen on experiencing the CB... Also, best to attend the Sakura Festival sometime mid March. 😊) . . Cherry blossoms at night!
Here, we are goingo to talk about the video of “Cherry clossoms at night” of the youtuber Japanagos, which is really interesting and surpising.
In this video the girl is talking about a very famous festival in Japan called “Meguro River Sakura Festival”, a lot of people go to see the cherry blossoms at nigth. The cherry blossoms are gigant trees with a lot of pink flowers, you can see them everywhere   Also, there you can find some snacks made of rice and petals of the cherry blossoms; there are two types of snack: the Kansai style and the Kanto style, the difference between this is that Kanto style is more soft and you can not see the rice.
In my opinion, I think that this kind of festivals are really amazing and special because it encourages you to come out and apreciate the beautiful nature, for me it´s really interesting this kind of festivals.

japan 2017
finally getting around to writing about this
OKAY so, i’ll try to go in chronological order
arrive at the airport, somehow find my way to the right station(shibuya). somehow actually find the apartment and run into zach/amy. we go to the airbnb, get settled in, and go out to get dinner at this 200yen place where everything costs 280 yen. pretty delicious. afterwards went home and went to sleep. yknow what man, i cant remember everything so i’m just going to document the important stuff.
amy:
SO ANNOYING. totally not my type of person. so emotionally weak and selfish.
zach:
doesn’t know what he’s doing with amy. i guess he’s new to this but he’s totally conforming himself to fit her, like way too much.
okay, japan:
akihabara <3 i feel like i only scratched the surface of akihabara. tokyo is TOO fucking big and crowded and complicated for my tastes. jesus. going to asakusa was pretty magical though. lanterns lit and that fortune i received with my birthday on it and then getting the private booth ramen. oh and the parks! the parks were so gorgeous and filled with happiness but I truly could not fully enjoy them because I was alone :( except for the one park where we went boating with the three high school girls. related to that, harajuku! but yes, the parks are so wonderful and magical and happy :) also, tsukiji fish market. when i went with zach/amy the food we got was pretty average, but when i went alone HNGH it was so good. the three tuna slices, the random other foods like that tamago on a stick, etcetc. shibuya’s crazy fucking crowds. that little hip city i went to with all the (expensive as fuck) vintage stores. shinjuku gyoen national garden, wow that park was especially gorgeous. walking through all of tokyo lost as fuck at first, took me forever to get anywhere. finding wifi wherever i could. browsing book stores hoping for english books. reading 5cm/second multiple times. drinking and doing karaoke alone. that first capsule hotel in ueno. that one hotel i found out in...somewhere. with the family playing badminton outside that made me feel so lonely. asking the lawson guy for directions to the station and him drawing me a nice little map. the meiji gingu shrine right by harajuku, like RIGHT BY IT. yoyogi park filled with cherry clossoms. my last and best akihabara trip where i scored all that konosuba stuff, got megumin from the gacha, got chauncey’s kanna, and then exchanged and used pretty much my last bit of money to get aqua from the gachapon. oh yeah, that day amy wanted alone time me and zach walking around the station and checking out the stores was really nice. omg and yoshinoya. yoshinoya in japan is so delicious and cheap, FUCK. walking around that meguro river where EVERY TREE WAS IN BLOOM. like eight hundred trees or something, jesus. oh yeah that khaosan hostel was really nice too, mainly amazingly well run.
southern japan:
kyoto’s temples, gion and ginkakuji and shit. navigating that bus system on the first day. philosopher’s walk was beautiful. amy always freaking out and zach always being a little bitch definitely ruined it a little though. what did we have for dinner that night? i think that was the night we went to dotonbori. that was the last day i spent together, i’m pretty sure. so yeah, that group from california we meet on the train. i loved them, they were so fun. wish i could have just traveled with them instead, fuck. getting drunk in public in dotonbori, smoking and listening to music and playing that drum game and getting okoyoaminoki and then doing crazy bad and loud and fun karaoke before retiring to my capsule hotel. next day, we go to the shrine with all the orange gates. oh yeah, the fucking your name soundtrack really lasted me through this trip. i love it. the bamboo forest, sea of voices while smoking at the top overlooking the city. then breaking off with zach/amy, going through the food stalls, waiting for them only for them to change their mind about me staying over, and then heading to kyoto to stay in a hostel. i forget which one though. oh yeah it was that nice one with a downstairs onsen. where i met that guy from australia, who mentioned renting bikes which was AMAZING. so yeah next day i rent a bike and venture around kyoto hitting up shrines and stuff. the imperial palace, toji temple or whatever, and that random little place by the river with the kids doing jump rope. that one little udon shop where you pick out tempura as you order. DELICIOUS and so cheap. just biking through kyoto felt wonderful. that night i stayed in....osaka i think? i think that’s when i stayed at ark hostel and had that wonderful ramen that was infused with pork. the really nice tall japanese guy at ark hostel and the girl that ran after me with my receipt. doing karaoke and getting too hammered and thinking violently of amy. going to nara and feeding the deer and renting a bike, wonderful. WONDERFUL I SAY. nara definitely was less crowded and felt more laid back. the parks were beautiful. many wedding couples taking pictures. that little meal i had in that open setting mmmmmmm so good. oh yeah, the sake tasting i did where the girl spoke in all japanese to me, only realizing at the end that i didnt understand a word which i really enjoyed. going back, trying the same ramen place but FUCKING UP and choosing a different one which turned out to be fish broth FUCK. going back, hanging out on the rooftop of ark hostel, hanging out with the people in the common room. oh wait, first day at ark hostel i watched rick and morty season 3 and then 5cm/second. wonderfulwonderfulwonderful. going to hakone! hakone was one of my greatest days forsure. getting there, dropping off my stuff at the hostel, going to lake ashi(talking to those two women from los angeles) and walking around before hopping on that cruise boat and then doing the gondola ride. honestly not too much to be said about this, although it was nice. then heading back, meeting that nice couple(the doctor and professor) and talking with them until i reached my destination. tenzen onsen. what a RELAXING experience. and then the EEL THE EEL. that eel was a sexual experience to eat. my god. the tenderness of it and flavor of it. just melting immediately as it hit your tongue. my god. of course, grilling the sardines(?) and reading 5cm/second while waiting for the eel was a great appetizer. but the eel, wow. then heading back to guesthouse azito, playing guitar and singing with the staff(AMAZING, one of my favorite experiences of the trip). then retreating to my comfy fucking bed and watching an episode of konosuba. that was like a perfect day. seriously. next day went back up to tokyo, holy shit fuck tokyo. exhausting as shit. dont really remember what i did tbh. or it’s also covered in the other part. but mainly, that last day was so great. i ran out of money so had to be really careful with my spending. woke up from my hostel in asakusa, got some rice balls(of course), and then explored akihabara for the day pretty much. everything worked out for me on that last day.
MAN, what a trip that was. two weeks. i would have enjoyed it so much more if for example austin and stephen had come with me instead of zach and amy. they honestly totally dicked the trip for me, although it’s not their fault. I think japan is a great place, at least from what i saw. the culture is amazing. oh yeah izakayas EVERYWHERE. so much drinking. mmmmmmmmmm i guess that’s it. i dont know, something about this trip left a bad taste in my mouth tbh. prob amy/zach and having to travel alone. but of course i don’t regret doing it, i just wish i could have done it with other people. my biggest regret is not being able to experience 1. izakaya hopping and 2. most significantly, drinking and hanging out with a group of people i like in a park during the cherry blossom season. but that’s okay :) i got to experience japan and that’s already amazing
