Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake. *spoilers*
It feels *good* to be back. Good, good, good. Because for the many, many who have mourned the loss of #adventure time since it wrapped up in 2018 (or 2021: take your pick), we mark a very happy return to that particularly charming, childlike universe with Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake. And genders/species are there to be swapped, with Finn the Human now Fionna the Human, a young woman languishing in mundanity, and Jake the Dog now Cake the Cat, a kitty cat who is quite rightly enjoying the endlessly regal perks of being a kitty cat. Questions abound, not least the prospective appearance of the original duo in this new spin-off. But questions can wait, quite frankly, because truth be told we are simply ~beside ourselves~ to be back in this world with these beloved characters.
Naturally, the dashboard is delighted to be back in the Land of Ooo universe. And so we invite you to peruse #adventure time for discourse and fanart to enrich the soul of any fan of this beloved cult series.

This has been updated. See the new version here:
Part 1
Part 2
Really rough timeline from Xavier's perspective:
(Spoilers for main story, anecdotes, and character myths. I haven't finished the myths yet, so some things could change)
Xavier is born on Philos. Clearly someone important, as he is constantly under guard. Life is connected to the core of Philos, making him and most people on Philos immortal while the planet remains.
Xavier went to school with MC in year 214, which is 214 years after the destruction of earth. MC has a fatal heart condition.
MC gives him the star charm and dies in his arms. Xavier promises to seek her out in her future lives.
(Rafayel and Zayne's myths on Philos?)
Xavier meets MC again at a Philos Academy as knights in training, sometime near the end of Philos’ life as a planet. Jeremiah goes to the Academy too. Xavier is now a prince (was he from the start?), though he rejects the role. He has a trial in the forest that changes his attitude/demeanor noticeably.
The king dies, and Xavier disappears for about 200 years. MC and Xavier meet up again while investigating the suspicious forest full of Wanderers. Jeremiah is part of MC’s squad.
At some point MC becomes Queen and Xavier her knight.
Xavier leaves MC’s service, and she fakes his death, claiming he died with honors.
Timejump to the past.
1834 Xavier, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Noah, and others stranded on Earth (Part of a team called the Backtrackers? Were on a Backtrack mission when something went wrong in the Deepsace tunnel.)
2018 Xavier checks out a book in the library that MC will check out 30 years later.
2021 Zayne born Sept 5th.
2024 Rafayel born March 6th.
2026 MC born.
At some point in MC and Rafayel's childhood, she saves him and they makes a vow. Also, Rafayel is tricked and his people, the Lemurians, are slaughtered. Some few survivors go into hiding living on land among humans, including his Aunt Talia.
2032 Xavier joins Arthur's police team.
2033 That winter, Noah contacts Xavier for information to make a new identity. Noah mentions wanting to be an ordinary person in this timeline and that he fell in love. Xavier fakes his death as a police officer and encounters a lost little girl. Fights Isaiah in Linkon city in a fight that makes the whole city go dark.
2034 Deepspace tunnel appears and Chronorift Catastrophe (timespace anomaly in Linkon city). Lemurian ruins discovered. MC is 8, taken in by Grandma. Caleb is also adopted by Grandma. MC has protocore shards in her heart. Her first heart doctor is Dr. Noah. 12 year old Zayne loses control of his Evol at the end of summer and has a nightmare about the Grim Reaper for the first time.
Zayne spends 8 years in med school program (about 2037 (age 16?) to 2045 (age 24?)
2045 Xavier meets Arthur at his tombstone. (Zayne’s (age 24?) mission to the Arctic?)
Rafayel seeking revenge overseas, not painting. He then moves to Linkon city and resumes painting again.
Rafayel becomes a lecturer at Linkon University where MC is attending.
Thomas becomes Rafayel’s agent.
Zayne begins working at Akon hospital, eventually as MC’s doctor.
2048 Story begins. MC is about 22. Rafayel says he is 24. Zayne is 27. Xavier claims to be 23.
Thoughts? What am I missing? What did I get wrong? It's a lot to process.

"I've lived and I've loved, I've drank bitter and cold coffee, and I've drunk it warm and sweet too. Lately the world lost its color, and with it the respite of love went away. Maybe it's still there, in the way I still cook, make coffee, load the laundry, buy takeout, and more; everything for two. I keep forgetting I'm going to wake up in an empty, cold bed, that my towels won't ever be warm again when I get out of the shower; sometimes I speak waiting for a response, but what answers me is the silence of a hollow house. I keep saying 'I'm home!' with a smile every once in a while, but then again, hollowness is all I get back. Sometimes I wonder if things could be different, if we could have had an eternity of warm embraces and late sunday mornings. Wondering is futile, you taught me that, what matters is the present, the now. There's days where I buy myself a flower bouquet and put it in your favorite vase, the one that I think is boring and dull, and other days I treat myself to a dinner date, always pouring something for you too; I hope you're enjoying that. Don't worry about me, I'm doing good, it seems I was prepared to live without you, it's so hard, but I'm doing good. Though I loathe the day your clothes stop having your smell, I keep spraying your cologne in your pillow, hoping that the smell brands itself in my brain. I've had no luck yet, maybe if I try harder I will achieve it. I hope you forgive me, but I made one of your ties my lucky charm that I tied to my bag, and I had to cut it in half, with the rest I made a bracelet which I use almost every day, hoping to have a piece of you with me always, at least physically. Maybe I will adopt that little kitten, the one you insisted I should stop feeding. His mama vanished, and he's doing relatively good by itself. But I have all this love inside me that is for you, overflowing and drowning me; it seems to like the charm made out of your tie because they always play with it when I put my bag down. Even when you're not around you still are a magnet of strays. …I am making this longer than I planned, maybe I will write you another letter next week, or when I feel ready. I hope you don't mind the ink a little smudged because I'm crying. With love, always and forever, until we meet in another life, Kento."
You carefully folded the letter, chest full of sobs and tears completely clouding your vision. Nestling the pen you just used against your chest carefully, it's weight heavy in your hands, is Nanami's favorite.
After calming down enough to move, you take the folded paper and move it next to the plain cream vase that now holds half wilted flowers, leaving it there, with the pen over it as a weight.
Grabbing your bag as you take a tissue from beside the door, you put on your shoes. The keys on the door jingle, a solitary keychain with now no pair dances. Closing the door, your next destination is the pet store, the kitten is going to need a lot of new things… absentmindedly you wonder what name would suit them as the sounds of the city engulf you.

Where Have You Seen Loki Season 2's X-5 Actor Before?
This post contains spoilers for the season premiere of "Loki."
"Loki" is back this week, and along with the return of Norse trickster god Loki (Tom Hiddleston), agent Mobius (Owen Wilson), and the rest of the Time Variance Authority, the show's premiere also sees the introduction of a few new key characters. Among them? Ke Huy Quan's helpful, tech-savvy Ouroboros (or O.B.) and X-5, a mysterious new TVA agent played by Rafael Casal. And it's the latter who is particularly intriguing.
So far, we haven't seen X-5 do much besides question whether jet skis are part of the sacred timeline, but the character already seems to be an agitating force within the organization. He's also quite possibly poised to become a recognizable Marvel villain. After all, a featurette for the second season had a couple bits of footage from behind the scenes that showed him in a TVA jumpsuit, as if he was being held prisoner. So that should be interesting to watch play out. But there's more.
As /Film's Sandy Schaefer pointed out back in July, the trailer for "Loki" includes a poster for a movie called "Zaniac!" which fans have tied to Casal's character via leaks and speculation. Zaniac is a noteworthy character in Marvel Comics, though he bears little resemblance to X-5. The character was an evil entity that possessed the man who would become Jack the Ripper, and later took over slasher actor Brad Wolfe.
Ahead of the show's premiere, Casal has been credited by several outlets as Brad Wolfe, not X-5, so it seems likely that he could play out some form of the Zaniac plot this season. Regardless of Casal's true role in the show, though, he's an excellent multi-hyphenate artist whose past works deserve attention.
If X-5 looks familiar, it's likely you recognize Casal from "Blindspotting," a fantastic 2018 musical comedy-drama that he co-wrote with longtime creative partner Daveed Diggs (yes, of "Hamilton" fame). "Blindspotting" was a labor of love for Casal and Diggs, who also produced the film about two best friends living in Oakland, California whose lives are disrupted by the broken policing system. As serious as that sounds, "Blindspotting" is also laugh-out-loud funny, and Casal is a totally charming standout as hot-headed Miles.
The performer reprised the role for Starz's "Blindspotting" TV show, which ran for two seasons and was recently canceled. A criminally underseen hidden gem of a series, "Blindspotting" takes place after the film and puts the focus on Miles' girlfriend, Ashley Rose (Jasmine Cephas Jones), as she parents the pair's young mixed-race son in a racist world, all while Miles is behind bars. Despite his character's incarceration, Casal still appears in the show frequently and his hilarious, soulful character is a fan favorite. If you're looking for a thoughtful, entertaining, dynamic watch – or just want to see what Casal's made of – you can't do much better than either iteration of "Blindspotting."
The performer has also made a name for himself in other projects, including several collaborations with Diggs. A poet and rapper in addition to his acting creds, Casal appeared on three seasons of "Def Poetry Jam" on HBO, released a mixtape with Diggs in 2010, and contributed to the soundtracks for "Blindspotting," including in the catchy (and foulmouthed, fair warning) song "Easy Come, Easy Go." He reunited with Diggs in the acclaimed 2020 miniseries "The Good Lord Bird," a wild historical fiction series led by a fiery Ethan Hawke. Casal and Diggs even started a public theater project called Bars Medley, which remixed classic literature into musical performances.
Other on-screen works of Casal's include a supporting role in the 2019 Hugh Jackman flick "Bad Education" (he played the love interest of Jackman's closeted character) and a multi-episode turn in the "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" revival. Casal played a ringmaster named Mr. Tophat in the reboot of the classic, kid-friendly horror series. Next up, Casal is appearing in "Wildcat," a biography of Southern Gothic author Flannery O'Connor that's directed and co-written by Hawke. The X-5 actor plays a character in one of O'Connor's short stories in the movie, which premiered at Telluride but hasn't been released to the public yet.
Whether X-5 is a frustrated TVA employee, a secret evil entity, a movie actor, or something else entirely, it's exciting to see an artist as talented and versatile as Casal take the stage in a major Marvel series. You can catch his next moves on Disney+, where new episodes of "Loki" stream Thursdays at 9pm ET.

TTNBD BLOG: PART ONE
I'm doing something different with this story. I always have much to say in the notes of my fanfiction and I'm usually bursting to talk about behind the scenes/commentary stuff, so I've decided to do blog posts to correspond with the updates of this story. I don't know if I'll do one for every single chapter, some of them may be grouped, but I hope people will find them interesting just the same! This post is to cover the first update, that being the prologue and the first chapter. Obviously, spoilers for those if you haven't read them yet.
INTRODUCTION
My writing process for a fic usually starts with the nagging vision of a single scene. It might be an ending, a beginning or a middle, but if it burns in my mind long enough that I have to write it down, that usually means that it will continue to stick around until I've done something about it.
Such was the case with To the End of Everything. In the late summer of 2014 (August I believe), I was on the bus, going to work, day dreaming (I can't read or watch videos in a moving vehicle, I'm very prone to motion sickness). I had recently been re-reading the first few arcs of the Kuroshitsuji manga and had finally gotten around to season two of the anime. Seeing Ciel as a demon gave me about six hundred thousand emotions, and so it was on my mind at the time.
Suddenly, a scene started to play out in my brain, and it was genuinely like watching a movie. I could see it all clear as day. It was Sebastian and Ciel, both demons, in twenty-first century London, standing at the grave of Ciel himself, on Ciel's one-hundredth-and-something birthday. Sebastian was holding a giant bouquet of roses and Ciel was rolling his eyes and pretending not to be totally charmed by the gesture.
This, of course, is the epilogue of TTEOE. That one scene dug its claws into me so completely that I spent the next four years writing an entire novel to explain how it was that the two of them ended up in that situation in the first place.
Fast-forward to the fall of 2018. It's almost Halloween, and I'm finally, finally, putting the finishing touches on the final chapter of TTEOE. Ciel and Sebastian are standing in the ruins of Phantomhive manor, which has been destroyed (again). The man who killed Ciel's parents has been defeated. The great evil has been vanquished. The contract between Ciel and Sebastian has come to fruition, but instead of Sebastian consuming Ciel's soul, he has transformed it. Ciel has been transformed into a demon, and he and Sebastian are even more irrevocably bonded than they already were (more on that later).
There were, however, still a few loose ends. No ending is ever truly clean, not in real life. And sure, this was fiction, but I like to leave room for my readers to imagine what might happen next for themselves, and also give myself a little bit of breathing room as an author, in case I ever do decide to write a sequel. But when I wrote the lines about Sir Arthur's followers still being out there, I didn't have any concrete plans to do anything about it.
Until about ten months later.
August, 2019. What is it with me and August? Well, whatever it was, it got me again. The same cemetery, the same grave. Only this time, it wasn't the twenty-first century. Ciel's death was still fairly recent in the grand scheme of things. And instead of Ciel standing in front of his own tombstone on his own birthday, it was Lizzy, bundled up in the cold, carrying out her grieving ritual, even still, visiting Ciel in order to wish him a happy birthday and to tell him she hoped he was in a better place.
And then an immediate hard cut to Ciel and Sebastian in Paris having wild sex. Here, let me quote my own outline document, which is the first thing I write for any fic, the place where I messily scribble down everything I want to happen in order to then break it down into scenes and fully write it later. I wrote this back in 2019.
"Lizzy visits Ciel’s grave. She tells him about her latest life update, how med school is going, how her friend Sybil has invited her to go to Paris for the holiday, and how excited she is that her parents said yes, on the condition that she take the servants with her to keep her safe. They've become super extra protective ever since the business of Ciel’s death and all that. Lizzy seems to be doing better, as the last time she visited Ciel’s grave was months ago, and we are led to believe she used to come here all the time. She ends the visit by telling Ciel that she might not be back for some time, and that she truly hopes he’s in a better place.
Cut to Ciel, who is indeed in a much better place- namely Paris, in some ridiculously lavish bed in a ridiculously lavish apartment, getting his ass eaten and his back blown out. It’s his birthday after all, and Sebastian won’t let him forget it, even if Ciel thinks birthdays are a foolish thing for demons to celebrate. It’s also their anniversary though, of the day they made the Bond, and Ciel doesn’t mind celebrating that one so much."
So, yes. I've been sitting on this sequel for some time.
The problem this time, unlike with TTEOE, was that I had no idea what to do with these two scenes. They were obviously the beginning of something, but the beginning of what, I had no idea. With TTEOE, I had elements from canon to draw upon, and an obvious goal- tell the story of how Ciel got his revenge and became a demon.
But here, any conclusion I might have was more vague. The cult was still out there, so maybe something happens that brings Ciel and Sebastian back to London? But to what end? Ciel is supposed to be dead, so it's not like he can just re-enter his old life.
I knew for sure I wanted the story to focus on Lizzy as well, to give her a narrative arc of her own, and maybe a romance (a sapphic one, obviously, because that's how we do things in my house). Would she know Ciel was still alive? Would she be a victim? And who would be the villain? Who had taken over in Sir Arthur's stead, and what was their even worse, even bigger plan that the gang would have to foil?
Obviously, I now have answers to all of these questions. But of course, those answers are for me to know, and for you to find out.
So, over the course of the last few years, I've been coming back to this story, adding random pieces in by bursts of inspiration, building a Frankenstein's monster of sorts. Trying to create life. And then a year ago in December of 2022, I decided I was ready to flip the switch, summon the lightning, and actually sit down and write this son of a bitch.
I really did intend to have it done a lot sooner than this. I was, in retrospect, a bit premature in announcing my intentions. However, one of an author's biggest motivations is their audience, so I think it was good that I knew people were waiting for me to do it, even if it did cause me to stress myself out more than a few times. But that;s completely on me, not on you, the reader.
I won't get too much into my personal life, but a number of things happened this that contributed to creative drought and periods of business that prevented me from writing. But I had encouragement from you guys, and I'll always be grateful for that, because it got us all here!
PROLOGUE: COUP DE FOUDRE
TTEOE had an epilogue; TTNBD has a prologue. There are several through-lines in this story (and oh boy has that been a BITCH to plot out, I hope it will be worth it) and a couple of those through-lines start years and years before the rest of the story, so I sectioned them off like this. Also, having a prologue makes me feel a little fancy.
Original characters are a touchy subject in fanficiton for some people. I personally don't read a lot of fic with OCs, which is wild because I'm currently writing one. But whenn they're executed well, some of the best fics I've read have had OCs play a major role. Of course, self-insert OCs are their own sub-genre, but that's not what is happening here. There were holes in the story I wanted to tell that needed characters to fill them, and none of the existing characters could reasonably be stretched to fill those holes. So original characters it was!
There are three original characters in this story; Sybil, who plays the most major role, who you met as a baby in this chapter and who you'll see as an adult in the next one. Then there's her father Simeon, who you've met as well, and another character who I won't mention by name yet because they're going to be introduced in next week's instalment! Both Simeon and this other person play lesser parts in the story, but they're important. I will be doing drawings of them this week, so you'll get to see what I picture them like alongside their descriptions.
EDIT: December 19/2023. I realised a couple more things I forgot to mention when I was chatting with my translaor van_Dort, for whose work I could not be more grateful! Simeon's name comes from the Bible, specifically the Simeon spoken about in the New Testament book of Luke, in Chapter 2, during the story of the birth of Jesus.
In Luke CH.2, Simeon was an old man living in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus's birth; he had been told by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he saw the Messiah. When Jesus was brought as a baby to the Temple in Jerusalem to be blessed, Simeon got to hold him, thus fulfilling his life's purpose.
The parallels between this Simeon and mine aren't meant to be super direct, but in TTNBD, Simeon's purpose was to father Sybil, and in holding her when she's born, he sees that purpose fulfilled. Also, as Van_Dort said, having a demon with a biblical name is just pretty cheeky and fun :>
Alois and Claude are here too! Season two of the anime is so juicy, with so many good elements to it, I just couldn't resist bringing these characters out to play. I can't wait to get into Alois's absolutely busted head and his wicked toxic dynamic with Claude. I feel like their relationship is a great foil for Ciel and Sebastian's, especially in this fic with the tone I'm going to take. I'm excited for you to see my representation of some of the events of the anime's second season.
CHAPTER ONE: A FAR, FAR BETTER REST
Ten or more years ago, when I was very, very involved in this fandom, much more than I am now (I'm like, here lurking but I wouldn't call myself active) I came across a piece of fanart of an older Ciel and Sebastian, and Ciel had this long hair, and it was so beautiful, and it changed my brain chemistry forever. I've never forgotten it, but I've also never been able to find it again, much to my chagrin. Maybe I'll try to recreate it now that I have the will and the skill to do so.
NEVERMIND! I just took a break from writing this to go search for it one more time and I actually found it! This is a repost on DeviantArt, The notes on the post say it was taken from 4chan but I can't seem to find the original source which sucks but I found it! I've been thinking about this picture for years!
Tumblr media
So yes, this specific picture is 99% of the reason why Ciel has long hair in TTNBD. If anyone by some miracle knows the original source, please do share. That and growing out one's hair is symbolic of starting over or time passing or whatever thing you learned in your high school language studies/literature class. Also I think it looks pretty. This is exactly how I imagine him, I've been trying to capture this hairstyle in my drawings, I need to tweak his bangs a little I think.
Also, kudos to those of you who noticed that Ciel's fake name- Gespenst- is German for phantom! I couldn't resist the fun little reference, both to the name Phantomhive and to the fact that Ciel, for all intents and purposes, is a dead man. Also it sounds cool! Bonus!
ANYHOW, onto other stuff. Namely, let's talk about the telepathy thing.
My guilty pleasure is those middling to badly written romance fantasy novels where a nineteen or twenty year old girl gets taken away into a fae realm and falls in love with some hot strapped fae prince or whatever and then finds out that he's her Mate *gasp* and they're *bonded*. If you're reading this and thinking about A Court of Thorns and Roses, then you're thinking of the exact series I was obsessed with when I was writing the end of TTEOE.
In ACOTAR, Feyre and Rhysand have a mating bond that includes a telepathic link. I already knew I wanted the ritual that turned Ciel into a demon to form a tangible bond of some kind between him and Sebastian, and I was reading those books at the time and it just struck me upside the head. Mating bond! Duh! It plays perfectly with the possessiveness that's already inherent in their relationship and the fact that they're supernatural beings with supernatural abilities- and I also happen think it's pretty ~hot~ oop.
To be fair, it's not just ACOTAR's fault: I've been big into Star Trek since I was a teenager and if you know what T'hy'la means and the absolutely legendary fandom mythology that surrounds it, you know where all of my obsession with mates and bonds and stuff really comes from.
I hope I've done a good job of laying out sort of how it works between Ciel and Sebastian, but just to be clear- I don't see it as being like, the ability to read/hear every single one of each other's thoughts. it's more like a link that they can use to sort of "speak" directly to each other, or if one of them is thinking about something very intensely, they can pick up on it.
To me, the vibe of these two has always been "power couple in a crowded room at a party, having a silent conversation with their eyes about how they're better and prettier than everyone else here" and I guess I wanted to make that a reality.
Also it's a great trick to be able to use during sex scenes.
Which brings me to my next point: as you will see, there are a lot more sex scenes in this fic than there were in TTEOE! And they're a lot more... how do I put this... graphic? That's Partially because Ciel and Sebastian's relationship is established, and they're demons, so they're just horny most of the time- and partially because it's been so many years since I wrote TTEOE! I'm just more comfortable with this stuff now and I know my way around it better from a writing perspective.
I wasn't even twenty years old yet in 2014 and now I'm staring down the barrel at thirty, so I've just grown up a lot and developed more as a person, as well as a writer. I feel like I've gotten better at writing in a lot of ways and one of those is definitely my ability to write porn. Not to brag or anything. I know it's a weird skill to be proud of, but in fandom it's a skill that's kind of worth its weight in gold.
Speaking of writing improvement, the honest-to-God biggest challenge for me this time around has been matching the cadence and tone of the writing in TTEOE. Having taken such a long break, and my writing voice having shifted like it has, I have to be deliberate about keeping it all coherent. I hope I'm doing an okay job.
Last but not least, Abberline's back! It's everyone's (my) favourite oblivious detective! I love outsider POVs and so I had a hoot and a half writing him in TTEOE, so of course he's back to investigate crimes and always be about one or two steps behind until the truth turns around and backhands him in the face! What will he do, where will he go, who will he see? Who knows! It's always an adventure!
Like Lizzy, Abberline has had his own response to what happened to Ciel. He's changed in his own ways and his place in life has changed as well. You'll be seeing more of him soon, along with everyone else.
Okay! I think that's all for now! Thanks for reading this... very long post! Feel free to ask questions, I'll be camping out near my inbox, and I'll see you again next week!

How A League of Their Own Is Changing the Game for Queer and Black Women
Stars Abbi Jacobson and Chanté Adams and original player Maybelle Blair chat with The Advocate for our digital cover story about making the gayest, most inclusive League yet.
By Tracy E. Gilchrist, August 12 2022
Partway into the pilot of the hotly anticipated Prime Video series A League of Their Own, Max Chapman — a ringer of a pitcher — arrives at the field where tryouts for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League are under way. On that Midwestern field in the 1940s, the women are literally hitting it out of the park, sliding into home, and catching pop-up balls behind their backs with ease. There’s a sense of joy among them, some housewives, others young women just out of school, for whom ballplaying was purely avocational, something they couldn’t take seriously if there were a meal to cook, laundry to fold, dishes to wash — that is, until the major leagues were gutted during World War II. With the male players off to war, they finally got their chance.
While players like Abbi Jacobson’s Carson and D’Arcy Carden’s Greta revel in the hope of becoming among the first women to play ball professionally, Max is turned away without a shot because she’s Black. Before exiting without a tryout, she fires a ball a few hundred yards over the heads of the women, umpires, and executives trying to make a buck off “girls’ baseball.” (“Who was that?” Carson exclaims.)
It’s the first scene in the series from creators Jacobson and Will Graham and queer executive producers Desta Tedros Reff and Jamie Babbit (who also directs) that signals to the audience that this is not your mother’s A League of Their Own. The 1992 Penny Marshall film that starred Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Rosie O’Donnell, and Madonna is a beloved piece of nostalgia that did much to tell the story of the forgotten women who played professional ball for a time. But the series goes deeper than that slice of all-American apple pie and hands back narratives to Black women who were barred from the AAGPBL, Latinx women who were a part of the league but not amplified, and queer women who found an abiding community with one another, whose stories were just under the surface in the film (O’Donnell confirmed to The Advocate in 2020 that she considered her character Doris to be gay, even if it wasn’t explicitly said).
Light spoilers ahead...
“I haven’t put anything out into the world that felt like I put so much of myself into it in a number of years. I’m feeling all the things and very excited because I feel really proud of it,” says Jacobson, whose married Carson falls for Greta while her husband is away at war. Jacobson — perhaps best known as one half of the hilarious, charming duo of best friends in Broad City (along with Ilana Glazer) who smoked weed, got into shenanigans, and loved each other deeply above all — says she’s nervous about League dropping because she cares so much about the show that’s been in the works since before the pandemic.
“This one is about a lot of big, important things — stories [that are] inspired by real people. And there’s a responsibility behind that,” she says.
“It’s also, you know, a reimagining of people’s favorite movie,” she adds with a knowing laugh.
For Jacobson, who first spoke publicly about being bisexual in 2018, the queer series is personal. It features queer femmes, butches, Black queer characters, trans folks, and several characters on a gender spectrum like the players and friends Jess (Kelly MacCormack) and Lupe (Vida and Fun Home’s Roberta Colindrez), one character representing Latinx players denied their stories.
Jacobson was just a kid when the film came out, but she remembers it fondly. It was the first time she felt validated in movies or TV as a girl who was into sports. For fans of the movie who may have trepidation about a “remake,” Jacobson assures the series isn’t that and it’s so much more.
“This movie does not need to be remade, but the stories of this generation of women who not only dreamed of playing baseball but were fucking good at it were not fully told in the film, right? The real estate of a two-hour film versus [that] of a television show to really show those marginalized stories and the stories that the film overlooked [makes a difference],” Jacobson says. “Some of the aspects of that league that were overlooked in the film, we thought were really important. I don’t think of it as a remake…the movie will be right over here whenever you want to watch it. And ours, hopefully, can exist right next to it. [The series] is expanding the lens a little bit to show more stories of athletes at the time.”
For Chanté Adams, who plays Max, a church-raised young woman who works at her mother’s hair salon while dreaming of the big leagues (and has a fling with the preacher’s wife on the side), A League of Their Own is part of her mission to share untold stories.
“When I envision my perfect career, this is the type of work that I want to continue to keep on doing,” Adams says about playing a character who pays homage to three Black women ballplayers in the Negro Leagues who never got their due — Toni Stone, Connie Morgan, and Mamie “Peanut” Johnson.
“Through this story, I feel like I’m honoring my family. I feel like I’m honoring my ancestors. I’m from Detroit. I’m a Midwestern girl. My dad is a historian, our family historian, and so [our story] involves the great migration and moving up from the South to find a better life in these factories,” Adams says.
Max is also queer and later discovers that her mother’s sibling was ostracized by the family for being trans — a story that resonates with Adams.
“When we [Adams, Jacobson, Graham] sat down and talked, I told them about…an uncle that was estranged from the family because he was gay. And he was Black. And it was the ’40s,” Adams says. “He ended up moving to San Francisco. I don’t know much about him; all I know [is] that his name was accurate. And I’ve been trying to research and find as much information on him as I can these past couple of years. [The creators] so graciously allowed the father of my character to be named Edgar in honor of my uncle, who passed away back in the ’80s.”
Max’s uncle represents an LGBTQ+ person of a silent generation making their own community, while the queer women of the central team, the Rockford Peaches, discover one another through friendship and romance. The love story that unfolds between Carson and Greta is sure to become a fan favorite. A queer femme, Greta, along with a friend and chosen family member, team slugger Jo (Melanie Field), has found a code to survive in a time when being queer could land a person in jail and ostracized from society. But others are queer too, including Lupe and Jess. And O’Donnell turns up halfway through the series playing someone who is queer and finally gets to say it, unlike her 1992 character.
Adams, who starred in the Laverne Cox vehicle Bad Hair, isn’t surprised by the nuanced storytelling, given the care taken behind the scenes to ensure as many voices as possible were represented. She recalls meeting the folks in the writers’ room over Zoom. “I got choked up…. There were Black women, queer people, trans people. It was exactly how it should be when doing a show of this caliber and in doing a show that is going to be representing so many different groups of people,” she says, adding that the makeup of the writers’ room is also reflected across the set.
“I’ve never been on a show that had this many queer people and this many people of color,” she adds.
If the fact that several Peaches in the series and many women from the other teams are queer (many of whom Lupe and Jess get to know intimately) seems like an outsized number, AAGPBL player Maybelle Blair, who came out publicly at 95 at a screening of the series at Tribeca in June, begs to differ.
“Out of 650 [players], I bet you 400 was gay,” Blair, who was dubbed “all the way May” for her prowess on the diamond, said at a panel for the series at the Frameline Film Festival a week after coming out.
“It was wonderful.… So many of the girls came in from the farms and they came in from all over the United States. And a lot of them thought they were alone too. And we had quite a time. There were so many gays in the league. It was amazing. Oh, but you know…let’s face it, we’re good athletes,” she said.
The series leans into a lot of joy — of playing ball, of finding love, and friendship. But it’s not naïve about the real threat of being found out as a queer person, a line that the charismatic and flirty Greta cautiously straddles.
“Those days…you wouldn’t dare be caught being gay. You have no idea how fearful it was. A lot of the girls that were in the service would come and visit us as our friends,” Blair says in a phone interview. “I had a lot of friends [who were] kicked out of the service on account of being gay. We had to be very careful.”
A League of Their Own has been in the works for about five years, and Jacobson met Blair in 2018. Between the time Blair came on board as a consultant — she’s now an integral part of the show’s press and screening tour — the documentary A Secret Love, about AAGPBL player Terry Donahue and her wife, Pat Henschel, wowed viewers on Netflix. Donahue, who died in 2019, was a friend of Blair’s. The relationship that developed between Blair and the show’s creative team became a critical piece of the series and a living example of the power of storytelling.
“We were developing the show and we sort of told her about our own lives. And she shared with us. It was important because she had not come out publicly until Tribeca,” Jacobson says. “I felt so privileged that she did that with us and felt that trust between us.”
While the series touches on difficult issues of race, gender presentation, queerness, and women’s rights, she sees it ultimately as one of joy in our current times when conservative politicians are seeking to shove queer people back into the shadows with anti-LGBTQ+ laws.
“I feel honored to tell those stories that were kept a secret,” Jacobson says. “And hope that that they might inspire people to feel like they’re not alone, wherever they are, if it is a place that is not accepting.”

Okay okay sooo this is going to be a rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles (or rottmnt 2018) kind of tickle rant post /pos because I got lots to say and no where/one to say it too! You can ignore this if you want to but I promise my next post we will be back to our regularly scheduled program of the glorious Dreamsmp!
Sorta spoilers ahead I guess! I just detailed some scenes and gave the episode it's from!
Also they are brothers everything is platonic thank you and enjoy!
My boysssss!! Ahh!
Tumblr media
Where do I even start!!
Okay okay! I am going to start off with my boy!!!
Leoo!!:
Tumblr media
-Mr Primetime!
-I love him wayyyy to much!
-When I started watching the show a few days ago and I saw him I said "oh no, here we go again another blue character with a great sense of humor, charm and a playful attitude, my one weakness!" And I was RIGHT! He is fantastic! /pos /hj /lh
-IM SO MAD WE GET NO LER!LEO we got Lee!Leo in the show cannon, so I'm not complaining but STILLL the lee in me wants something! A few crumbs is all /hj /pos /nsrs
-He's such a bratty switch I swear! I can never tell what side he's leaning more towards by the end of it, he's just smack dab in the middle and I love it!
-HE IS SUCH A TEASE I- ASDFJKNXNLXML
-I headcannon that he loves making people laugh and hearing them laugh because of one of his one liners or something he did just makes him all warm and happy inside, although he would never admit that, so tickling is a perfect win in his books especially when it comes to his brothers/the people he cares about the most
-Leo is absolutely 1000% the type to not only tickle someone just for the fun of it but he is also GREAT at cheer up tickles!
-He is everyone's personal hype man! So his cheer up tickles, most of the time, he can adapt lol, are a one way train ticket to compliment ville! Woop woop! All aboard people! Captain Leo coming through! /lh /pos
-He's a squirmy lee as we've seen in the 'Mystic Library' Season 1 episode 20, his giggles are all over the place and just so amazing! He quite literally loses all control of his body so tickle him with caution! And he will always get revenge so be prepared to run! And good luck!
-Whenever he does get tickled it's most of the time Donnie being the ler. Or Raph but yeah, With the siblings bond they share it's bound to be him most of the time if not all of the time! Donnie gets some much needed Revenge time and Leo gets tickled, It's a win win regardless!
-He will always provoke, never EVER will he ask for it, unless raph tells him to say it or else he won't get tickled, but other than that he refuses to admit it! Especially not to Donnie!
-Have I mentioned how teasy he is! I can't stress that enough!
-Also he 100000% uses puns/jokes in his tickling as a part of his teasing and or provoking but yeah it's simply Leo!
-He also has/can do that teasy voice where a person can soften/lower their voice and drag out syllables and just AH! (Okay okay I'll stop I just ahhh leoo!!! *clears throat* anyway! /lh /pos)
-OH one last thing! He absolutely uses his portals to tickle people, he's used it to scratch his own back the possibilities are endless, he has definitely tickled people that way!
Donnie!!:
Tumblr media
-Bootyyyshaker9000!!
-I have A LOT! to say about Donnie so strap in people!!! Here we go!
-Imma start off with Ler!Donnie because I haven't seen many talks/thoughts on it! And I have a lott! to say!
-SO! Starting off with what we know, Donnie is the tech man of course but in the one tickle scene from 'Many Unhappy Returns' Season 2 episode 2! HE HAS A TICKLE MECHINE JUST ON DECK TOO! Sorta its a feather attached to his bo staff but he just HAS IT UMM HELLO! /pos That was so awesome! He's so a ler lean! Like ah! Amazing!
-this is the other thing on my mind BUT! In Season 1 episode 5 when splinter steals the tank and he goes "Oh Papa if you surrender now! There Shan't be any consequences!" THAT FELT SO LER CODED! like that whole scene gave me such ler vibes/energy!! You can't tell me after hearing that that the bros have hid from him before and he's tickled them out of it! Also Splinter saying "I am not taking the fall for this, purple is a monster!" Uh yeah a huge tickle monster who should never be messed with, do not underestimate bootyyyshaker9000 that's the lesson of the day!
-Mikey is his favorite to tickle, you would think it would be Leo But it's really Mikey! I could talk for hours about the bond those two share but I'll keep it down for now!
-He absolutely (other than the one we saw) Absolutely has invented more tickle tech things! Honestly an adorable thought to go with this headcannon is that he's made something like that for Mikey, like a peice of amor that only activates when Mikeys being silly or something (Like the Donnies gifts episode) and it just tickles him before he even understands what's happening
-He's a genius! You mix a smart guy and a ler in one! Boom Tickle Tech!
-He absolutely made more too after that battle seeing as how effective it was against the enemy, he keeps it in his battle shell now cause' you never know when you might need to use it!
-He will absolutely use tickles to cheat in video games too! Anything to be #1!
-Also his Nicknames for everyone!
-Donnie is just so amazing!
-Now Lee!Donnie! I've seen a lot and I agree with most of it! So here's what I'm adding! He's Lee moods are rare but the only person he feels comfortable with going too when a lee mood does set in is Mikey! Little by little He's slowly warming up to everybody but it's just perfect!
-Lee!Donnie to me, what I picture at least is just giggle city! He doesn't squirm much/at all but he's just full of giggles! If you hit the jackpot though it's loud, genuine and amazing! Go Donnie!
-PLEASE DO ME A FAVOR AND SAY YOU'RE PROUD OF HIM! Compliment him! Especially in the middle of tickling him he will GLOW!
-He absolutely has a ticklish shell
-I feel like he wouldn't want it touched/isn't comfortable with that but he gives you the go ahead I think that is the jackpot
-He's so amazing!
Raph!!:
Tumblr media
-HE'S LIKE A BIG OL' TEDDY BEAR!
-Deserves more attention I swear!
-This man cannonically has Autophobia (The fear of being alone) and I think that just adds an extra layer to him but also lee!Raph
-With this being Cannon I feel like one of the ways the boys would snap him out of his crazy state is to tickle him and remind him that they are here and that they are never going anywhere and that he's not alone and I just think it's so cute!
-Another thing with this to me is if they are ever playing hide and seek (with or without the tickle twist) he has to hide with someone every time if he's not seeking
-Because of his oldest brother role and overall strength he doesn't get tickled as often he's normally the one doing the tickling but I really feel like he enjoys tickles, give him some, He deserves them! He's doing great!
-Random thought but I feel like the spikes he can grow on his shell are really ticklish!
-His brothers have all absolutely tickled him to calm his emotions when things start getting out of control
-OH and Donnie has absolutely tickled him until he actually came up with a plan, Donnie said it was "training" it technically was but he also used it as an excuse to tickle him
-Now Ler!Raph! Oooo boy!
-He has absolutely used his mystic forms hands to tickle people! (Like Leo and his portals!) I think he did in the 'Many Unhappy Returns' tickle scene I don't remember but still!
-He's so gentle when he tickles most people (Leo is the exception, and bad guys of course!) He doesn't want to accidentally hurt anyone but he's also just a more gentle guy! We love him so much!
-His tickles are a bit all over the place too as well as his teases because he's not good with plan making and teases in general but he'll always leave you giggling and sometimes your face reder than his bandanna
-He just loves making people happy so tickling people is just a total win in his books!
-Such a sweetheart AH! Just don't make him mad! Haha!
-
Last but not least!!!
Tumblr media
Mikey!!:
-Dr Delicate Touch
-Starting off with that! "Dr Delicate Touch" as we know, there is nothing Delicate about it! Haha! But as my Segway he ABSOLUTELY has used that name before tickling others It's their equivalent of the "Tickle monster" Like to his brothers (*Cough* Donnie *Cough*) He would say something like "Uh ohhh I think someone needs a visit from Dr Delicate Touch" and then proceeds to tickle them
-A lot of people see him as a lee! And I agree! He is very Lee coded being the youngest and everything, just by the way he acts! But I see him more as a Lee-Lean rather than just a full Lee
-My reason for this is because in the "Many Unhappy Returns" episode when the tickle scene happened he was the first one to call it out the whole "We found a tickle spot!" Bit and he seemed really happy about it so I think he does enjoy being ler but because of the way he is he's more of a lee
-Mikey is so fun as a Ler! His tickles are fast and all over the place but in an organized way if that makes any sense at all
-He's the type to point out little things the lee is doing and tease like that but in different voices
-He'll play different characters or put on new voices when he's tickling someone just to keep it interesting and upbeat
-Oh and he's absolutely used a paintbrush to tickle someone, art is his thing! He's gotta have done it once!
-Very vocal teases
-Now as a Lee! Ohoho boy!
-He has been targeted by everyone so there is no set Ler for him but he would argue that it's Donnie!
-He's got the loudest laugh out of them all, Leo is a close second, but his laugh is also all over the place when he's tickled, he can go from big loud laughs to sweet honey giggles! Either way he is a walking tickle spot!
-He gets tickled for everything, Here's how the list goes, When he's doing something reckless and someone needs to stop him it's Raph on the case! He outright just provokes Leo and For Donnie it's for comfort
-He absolutely has hidden in his shell to make the tickles stop or to just get his ler mad but either way it's always a giggle fest when that happens and it takes every ounce of teasing in the Ler's arsenal to get him out of his shell
-We've all collectively agreed that his death spot is his underarms right? Fantastic yes! /pos
-He got a taste of his own medicine once with being tickled by a paint brush and he absolutely lost it he can't handle his own medicine!
-Physical teases get him the most though, stuff like stopping mid way through and then starting up again or those fake attacks where they look like they're going to tickle you and then stop just inches before they reach your tickle spots, and just slower tickles in general he can't handle that!
-He's so great!
---------------------------------------------------
I LOVE THEM SO MUCH! I just wanted to share my thoughts so I hope you enjoy! :]
-K :]

Please yell about Return of the Obra Dinn
OKAY
Obra Dinn is a 2018 mystery game, which for me was very much a case of "third time's a charm" because I gave up the first two times I tried to beat it. I finally finished it a few days ago and I'm so happy I did, and I've been thinking about it pretty much nonstop since.
It's super unique - you play as an insurance investigator sent to investigate the Obra Dinn, a ship that suddenly appeared with no-one on board. You have a pocket watch, which you use to travel back in time and view scenes from life on board, and a book in which you have to determine each of the 60 people on board's identity and fate. It's hard at times, but extremely satisfying to figure out.
The game's graphics are also fascinating:
Tumblr media
(via the game's official site)
I'm gonna put yelling containing spoilers under a read more, but before that I think I'll share an idea I've had for a while now? Basically I love hanging out with people while playing games, and I thought I could make a Twitch account and link it here, and maybe play some games there. I'm curious if anyone would be interested 👀
Anyway, warning cause the game is pretty brutal.
I think my favorite thing the game does is that at the very beginning it doesn't reveal the full scope of what you're going to be dealing with. You go through the first few scenes and the deaths are pretty mundane, but then all of a sudden you jump into a different scene from a different scene and KRAKEN is just there. And sure, while determining the fates of the people in the first few scenes you might have noticed causes of death such as "torn apart" or "spiked", and "beast" is a possible culprit, but the Kraken scene makea you realize exactly what you're going to be dealing with.
I thought I wouldn't grow attached to the characters, because you mostly look at still scenes and only get some bits of dialogue, but boy was I wrong. There are moments when you witness the characters in normal circumstances, just living their lives on the Obra Dinn, you see what they do in their time off, who they hang out with, and that makes the more tragic fates so much more painful later on. I'm still emotional over a couple of characters in particular, like the three midshipmen.
Now some smaller things:
- a few characters can only be recognized by their footwear. Holy shit.
- the only Polish character was voiced by Piotr Adamczyk, a very popular Polish actor who's mostly known for playing in shitty rom-coms and also playing the Pope. I find it hilarious.
- took me until I started browsing the game's wiki to learn that one of the characters died on the toilet. Poor guy.
- you can choose the captain as the culprit in every single fate to get the achievement "the captain did it".
- even the reveal of how Obra Dinn, well, returned, was shocking - as was the reveal that the being responsible for it was still around.
- so many people disappeared in "THE DOOM" that it's become an inside joke between me and my sister. If there was a character I couldn't remember the fate of, they probably disappeared in "THE DOOM".
- the introduction of the "SOLDIERS OF THE SEA" chapter is incredible, and the chapter's track makes it even better.
I think that's it? Thanks for giving me the opportunity to yell :D I can't recommend the game enough.

Sociopath Profile: the Doll Woman
Tumblr media
From the manga series Chainsaw Man (2018-present*) *Valid as of early March 2023*
[SPOILERS BELOW]
Santa Claus is the one behind the German assassin old man coming after Denji. Someone almost as cruel as Makima with even less lofty ideals to fall back on. While Makima claims to be doing everything for the betterment of mankind, Santa has no delusions about her selfish desires.
Her lack of empathy comes out from the fact that she is willing to throw away lives without hesitating. Her contract with the Doll Devil allows her to transform random people into her dolls to assimilate into her hive mind. Her "Santa" body can touch people and turn them and at that point, they become mindless drones and are effectively dead, despite the fact that she can control time to pretend to be alive. In addition, her devil contract involves her sacrificing three children. The old man asks for "one for pleasure," but what that one is for is so she can groom them to be a perfect doll, one that is indistinguishable from a person. This is the case of the old man and what she plans to do with her assistant Tolka.
This also leads to her manipulative tendencies. Santa uses her charms to charm Tolka into serving her completely. All to the point of being her next perfect doll. She raised him with the express purpose of basically killing him. In addition, when Public Safety is fighting with her other dolls, she messes with them by making them seem like her victims are still conscious while fighting them. This gives some people, even Denji, trouble since they were convinced the dolls were already husks.
Her arrogance shows through how she believes she'll be able to beat Makima and gain infinite knowledge. That's why she decides to make a contract with the Darkness Devil to send her and Public Safety to Hell to get a piece of its flesh. She displays an even more prideful attitude once she gets it, boasting about the knowledge she has gained to be above everyone else. When defeated, she is angered by someone she sees as worthless as Denji was able to best her. Then she threatens to be sure that he is threatened by all of her dolls around the world, making sure he never knows who is who even when her main body is being destroyed.
However, despite all of her long-term planning and skills with manipulation, Santa's goals are not very well thought out. For one, there's never been an explanation for why she wants power other than to improve her weak frail body, but the rampage she goes on shows she just wants power for the sake of it. And her goal of infinite knowledge is also one she didn't consider when Cosmo shows her how out of her depth she really is even with her expanded understanding. Once Cosmo gives her the knowledge, Santa is rendered effectively catatonic since human minds were not built for such information. The same goes for those dolls that she threatened Denji with.

I watched the Mark Oshiro interview and noted down the rrverse-relevant passages for y'all
(I would rec watching the vid in its entirety if you have time to kill; Mark is super charming and thoughtful, just like I remembered them from their "Mark Watches" days, and says a lot of interesting stuff abt writing and the publishing industry in general)
– Rick had the full outline ready: major arcs & themes figured out already
– there’s stuff in the outline Rick had been planning for years, he had it sitting for a while
– Rick sought Mark out specifically, then Mark was asked to “audition” by writing the first 3 chapters that would be later seen by various ppl including some of the Disney publishing ppl. Mark decided to tweak/change some stuff. Kept 90% of the outline changed a 10%. They felt they needed to figure out/visualize things that weren’t in Rick’s outline, that were left unspecified there (the way Mark talks abt it, it feels like it’s mainly worldbuilding/lore stuff they are talking abt). Mark says Becky Riordan was very helpful with this, she knows the canon deets better than Rick.
– Rick wanted Mark to write first draft bc even tho the story is Rick’s, he wanted it to be told through an authentically queer perspective, with the nuance and sensibility that he as a straight man doesn’t feel capable of understanding/conveying.
– There’s things in the final draft that Oshiro decided to leave to Rick bc they felt Rick knew the characters better
– Oshiro talks abt the reactions of the ppl who have read the quasi final drafts and how one of the Disney editors said the book was for rrverse fans “like Spiderman No Way Home was for spiderman fans”, meaning this is a book that respects the identity these characters have built through the prev books and the history they have while still managing to take them somewhere new, which is exactly what Mark was trying to accomplish, and which they say “Rick is deeply thoughtful about. He cares a lot.” – Mark wanted to give these characters their due and also (said in a lighthearted but also clearly committed & passionate manner) make the gayest Percy Jackson book ever published
– talks a bit about an upcoming horror YA book of theirs and calls it “the fist dual pov book I’ve written”. The book comes out march 2023, it seems likely Mark’s started working on this before the solangelo book so… probably means nothing re: whose pov solangelo is told from?
– Mark thinks Rick has the ability to inject levity in extremely dark moments without lowering the intensity/stakes, which is essential when writing for middle graders while still wanting to take the story to emotionally challenging places, but very few authors can do it as well and as effectively (I AGREE)
– there’s a scene in the solangelo book where Mark kinda wrote themselves into a corner bc it was too scary and they realized it might not fly for the intended readership “and then I thought of the silliest way to deflate the terror” and they are very proud of that bc they feel they captured the quintessential Riordan tone. Bc the PJO books are great and complex and telling important stories etc but quote: “they’re fucking weird as hell” too.
– Mark actually only started reading the saga in 2018. Read them all in a week and was like the Lady Gaga meme. At the time they feel like they were only missing TON (if this was 2018 they were missing TTT too so either they are misremembering the year they read them in, or that they were missing TTT too). They reread them all when TON came out, and twice again last year.
– “the best time to start reading Percy Jackson is always.”
– They know it’s cheesy but their fave char from the moment he was introduced was Nico, and there’s a big reason for it that Mark can’t talk about bc it’s stuff that is in the solangelo book. It’s plot spoilers. Mark will be free to say it when the press tour for the book starts. (This seems contradictory tbh but it is how Mark explains it)
– They like Annabeth and Grover a lot
– “My favorite surprise character that at the beginning I was like ‘ehhhhh’ and at the end I was like ‘I would die for him’ was Apollo.”
– after reading series 1 Mark was like how are there 10 more of these where can this story possibly go, and then Rick did “a thing” (no spoilers) in series 2 that made the narrative world bigger, and then he did “another thing” in series 3 that concerns the character of Apollo, “and Apollo grew on me so much”, he goes “from the most annoying character on the face of the planet who judges everyone around to ‘all of these demigods are my children and I will murder for them’, it’s just incredible to watch that whole thing happen. Which means I also love Meg, and I love Meg’s growth too”
– there’s another character too that Mark loves and feels deserved the spotlight so they put them in the new book. “We don’t talk abt them enough” (Mark’s kinda joking as they say this, tho the love feels sincere)
– Mark’s godly parent would be Hades whom they liked in the PJ books but also always liked in general and share an aesthetic with

reviewing everything starring mads mikkelsen (ongoing)
Mild spoilers warning - I am vague but I do describe endings and progression as negative/positive, so if you don't like knowing what happens at all, beware.
Bleeder (1999)
Tumblr media
His character in this is quite endearing. A young movie fanatic, a bit reserved and awkward. The other characters' stories are much more chaotic, so in comparison, watching his perspective feels more safe or peaceful. The ending was a pleasant payoff. Awkward, but sweet in a special way. I guess you could say this movie may have a message about testing your comfort zone in hopes of meeting better people to surround yourself with.
The Door (2009)
Tumblr media
The first half of this movie is the better half, and the second half felt a bit absurd or boring for me. I enjoyed that he is a painter, and wish that was revisited more often. I really felt his fall into depression, and I enjoyed the motif of water and repetition of trauma. And then of course, the door is an interesting mechanic. My favorite part of this movie is when he meets himself. Horrific, shocking, amusing, and dramatic. Those were very memorable scenes.
The Hunt (2012)
Tumblr media
The scenes involving other characters were hard to sit through, but I felt the discomfort was somewhat justifiably necessary for enforcing realism; it's not meant to be theatric or entertaining. The longer the movie goes on and the more the situation develops, the more it matures like wine, and his' turmoil grips you. All the action he takes are so enthralling. I love the convenience store scene and the church scene (picture above). The conclusion may be beautiful, but the ending is dreadful. I looked up the meaning/interpretation of it, and that rounded my appreciation for this film. It's sociological commentary. Very true message, whether you like it or not: Once trust is betrayed in a community, it can never be completely earned back. There will always be someone who remembers that rumor, and will try to exile you from society. I believe the title only makes sense after the film is over. You could see the rumor as a scar left on him, like a wounded animal, while other people notice it, and like wolves, they will freely decide to exclude him from their pack, leaving him to die alone.
A Royal Affair (2012)
Tumblr media
You'll really watch this waiting for his character, and be thankful when he arrives. He ultimately influenced the world and people around him for the better. The development is very interesting, and the pacing feels full. You will suspect specific twists of drama or betrayal to happen, and everything that does happens is very realistic- since it is based on a true story- yet still just as interesting as if it were a fictional thriller. At the scene where the priest fidgets with this cross, I arrived to the same quiet realization soon after he did. The priest is praying for forgiveness in his heart, as well as the cross foreshadowing a crucifixion. I felt heavy even until the credits, though the last scene was fulfilling. I don't know anything about Denmark, but this was a great introduction to the 'most dramatic event' in its history.
Men and Chicken (2015)
Tumblr media
This character is very unexpectedly different from his other roles. Regardless of whether the comedy fails my humor, seeing him acting like this is humorous in of itself. I'll write a review after I've finished it.
Doctor Strange (2016)
Tumblr media
There's not a mountain of Mads content or his signature charm here, but it's very interesting to see him as a flat antagonist with not much depth at all. His darkness is sickness, like it makes you feel hopeless for him. Dark, as if he has surrendered himself to the drug of black magic. It kind of scared me. Also, the magic distorting and fracturing architecture is beautiful.
Arctic (2018)
Tumblr media
This movie amazes me, despite its simplicity. It's pure survival. It's morbidly dreary, but then you see he has it figured out. His system of survival sets you up to believe in him and assume a vicarious spectatorship that is held and tested for a long duration. You're never sure if they'll make it, but you don't want them to give up. There is a lot of energy expended just to survive, which radiates a warmth, a sense of self-fulfilling purpose, with the risk of the cold biting it away into hopelessness and death. I really felt the twists and turns, the decisions and mistakes, all the way through.
Polar (2019)
Tumblr media
It's simply satisfying to watch him do what he does, a classic toughguy trope. This is an adaptation of a comic, (which I haven't read) and I enjoy how the style is adapted. The female deuteragonist is precious. It feels as though the movie is split into two sides; a double life, blood versus quiet. Both of the characters can be found in this duality of mental states, trauma and seeking peace for it. They may be similar, yet they are almost polar opposites. I love them. I really enjoyed the twist, a bomb drop after all that painstaking effort to survive, and the conclusion tempts me to know what happens next in the comics (if there is more, that is...).
Death Stranding (2019)
Tumblr media
It's been a while since I've sat down and watched through a playthrough, but with that being said, I love this game... because I treat it like a movie. I will say, I like stories that play with mortality and perception. It was very interesting to meet Cliff as a father figure in claustrophobic recordings, and then meet him again as an antagonist with immaculate symbolism and aesthetics. He is trapped in the battlefield, like a dead soldier, and/or a traumatized man. Stasis, incompleteness, and sacrifice would appear to be themes. I really love the nonlinear storytelling. I really enjoyed the twist/reveal. It probably gave me goosebumps when I first saw it.
Another Round (2020)
Tumblr media
This is probably one of my favorites. I appreciate a story that serves a thesis to life. I can't say much of my thoughts because I literally just watched it, but I think it executed the idea well. There's a lot of moments of amazing payoff, but you know how much of it may become bad, yet the dread of knowledge doesn't nullify any of what you experience along the way. It also feels rare to see other characters surrounding his character to have such a bond and impact to him. The ending felt so out of key in the perfect way. It's a profound (philosophical) party movie.
Hannibal (2013-2015)
Tumblr media
A few years ago, I had watched the first two seasons, and had basically zoned out halfway through S3, then stopped... for some reason that I've now forgotten, after experiencing the finale. It's stuck with me and may for some time. 3rd season is proper good, and gave clarity to the character of Hannibal, and conclusion to Will's relationship with him. It's as though on your first watch you are as blinded as Will, despite knowing as a viewer that Hannibal Lecter is obviously (or very likely) the 'Chesapeake Ripper' in the show. The veil is lifted from his eyes once, but there are still layers yet to peek through, the nebulosity of darkness shrouding the relationship, (for Hannibal intrinsically has a 'dark' mind; seemingly insane by all humane reason) and yet onward do they get to know each other... like any other relationship. Rewatching is very enjoyable, because you can now assume Hannibal's perspective after learning his patterns and values, stripping away the mystery and watching the characters trying to arrive to where you are in understanding. Plenty moments where all Mads gives is a seemingly empty glance, but after obtaining objective knowledge, there is infinite texture to it. Very humanizing, Hannibal almost becoming a bit more alike Mads' other roles, (that of which being protagonists) yet still an antagonist.
